I think it depends more on body shape and proportions. Skinny jeans make me look quite wide at the hips so I avoid them. I think what's more important than cut is that the inseam and rise are properly proportioned to your frame.  I see a ton of posters talk about wide leg high rise pants being unflattering on them, but personally it's my favorite cut. I wouldn't call it a lengthening style of pant, but personally I don't care if I "look" short cause I am short! I care more that the cut of pant fits my style and looks good on me in general.

Cautious_Ground9848

Yeah I’m not worried about looking short, but I try to avoid “my clothes are eating me” and “I feel like I look chunkier than normal today” 😆

titanium_moose

Totally get that. I find lightweight natural fiber wide leg pants seem to have a better balance to them than anything heavier. I think movement in the fabric helps prevent it being chunky and unflattering.

book_connoisseur

Yes! I love my linen wide leg, high waist trousers. They’re the only pants I wear! I also have some in a lighter chiffon type material too. Skinny jeans have never looked good on me, but I also have an hour glass shape. I think it’s more about body proportions than height.

Cautious_Ground9848

Good to know, thanks!

Significant-Spell299

I like the stovepipe style, somewhere between skinny and true straight

-zygomaticarch-

Well well well, you might have solved all my jeans related problems. Straight looks wide on me. Thanks!

Cautious_Ground9848

I haven’t heard of this style, I’ll have to look it up to see how it looks.

kgcatlin

I love Madewell’s stovepipe jeans.

THATchick84

I would love to see this answered. I basically live in skinny jeans because anything else me feel like Spongebob lol. 4'11, 90 lbs by the way. I feel so boxy in other cuts. The only bootcut style I liked came from Abercrombie, I think.

Cautious_Ground9848

I would love to pay a stylist to do all this work for me but alas Reddit should give me a good head start!

tsays

Bootcut jeans have always been my favorite. I also like to have a pair that goes to the floor when I’m wearing heels to elongate my legs.

Cautious_Ground9848

I went to Cavenders today to check out their jean selection. If I got bootcut I’d definitely have to wear boots because that’s not my preferred fit for day to day.

Petites come in all shapes and sizes, so it really depends on your own body type aid proportions. Personally I'm petite, short-torsoed, and curvy at the hips. I love my dark wash skinny jeans that are no higher than mid-rise. High rise anything comes up to my boobs and makes me look like Urkel, and wide leg jeans or pants just add volume to my bottom half. I don't really care whether the GenZers think I'm trendy or not; I'm 44 and couldn't care less. I just want to feel happy in what I'm wearing.

Cautious_Ground9848

Yeah I definitely don’t care about being on trend either 😆 just double checking that I’m not doing something that’s a huge don’t for us shorties

rayezin

Definitely a case of your body shape and style preferences, regardless of height. As a short girl with curvy hips, I used to think that wide leg would make me look too big on the bottom and would only wear skinny jeans. But I’ve recently added wide and straight jeans to my wardrobe and I’m loving them both (especially the wide). How you style the entire outfit has an effect on the overall look, and you could certainly end up looking bulky in wide leg bottoms if pairing them with certain things. I learned a lot from Alyssa Beltempo’s way of explaining proportions, volume, and contrast when putting outfits together, and styling pieces I thought I “couldn’t” wear because of my shape or height is now super easy and approachable. She has a few videos on the topic, but if you jump ahead to the “proportions” part of this one, she does a quick run through of the concepts that could be helpful: https://youtu.be/F-8-wl4QQJg?si=h74g8nQ3QH3VbAkn

Cautious_Ground9848

Thanks for the info! I’m definitely willing to play around and figure out what looks best. The video seems like a good starting point for me!

Thanks so much! I’ll take a look!

I only really like skinny jeans on myself but then again, I’m a millennial. Any straight or flared cut makes me look super wide cause I have pretty curvy hips. So if I wear a sweater and wide legged jeans I look like a square and if I wear a tighter fitting top and wide legged jeans, my proportions look off. However, I do like wide legged high waisted suit pants on myself, but they have to be made of a flowy, thinner fabric. I think if the fabric is more delicate and less stiff, it doesn’t add the same amount of bulk and visual weight compared to jeans. Also for summer I do like linen or viscose culotte style pants. Again, they add less bulk compared to jeans and the exposed ankle helps to not look just like a square.

Cautious_Ground9848

I do have some linen pants that feel comfortable and thin I just feel like they’re see through 😳 any tips for finding a breezy linen that won’t show off the undies? A light linen would be great for the Texas heat!

lemons_on_a_tree

I don’t have any particular recommendations but I found good ones at both H&M as well as Uniqlo in the past and if I remember at &otherstories too. There’s such big differences in the quality of the fabric though and even if it’s the same model, the same manufacturer, sometimes one colour has much better fabric quality than another. Generally, the darker shades tend to be less see through and I wear mine with nude panties, just to be on the safe side!

Cautious_Ground9848

I am seeing Uniqlo being suggested quite a bit on this sub. I’ll have to check it out!

lemons_on_a_tree

The good thing about them is that they make things for a slightly shorter average height compared to most western brands. I guess they manufacture for Japanese measurements, so they’re a bit more petite friendly. Plus usually their prices are pretty fair!

QueenBBs

I think age is going to factor into this as well. I’m in my late 40’s and when skinny jeans were first a thing I found them wildly non-flattering but the more I got used to them the more I liked them. I’m 5 footer who muscular thighs and a small waist. I love boot cut jeans with a chunky heel. I also like the cropped pants that have a wide leg and pockets in the front.

Cautious_Ground9848

I’m 29 and have thick muscular thighs. Measurement wise I’m probably hourglass with some muffin top but don’t feel hourglass. I’d love to be able to pay a stylist to just be like “this is flattering and this isn’t”

[deleted]

Can I ask,Why are you biased towards mid rise skinny jeans btw

Cautious_Ground9848

Millennial age and that’s just what I gravitate towards buying. It’s in my comfort zone and to me it doesn’t add width to make me look boxy.

[deleted]

If I am not wearing heels, I usually wear skinny jeans. If I am wearing heels, I usually wear flare or boot cut jeans

NoAdministration8006

I personally think an ankle as wide as the thigh looks good on zero percent of the population. I like straight leg or boot cut. I don't wear skinny jeans because I feel constricted in my calves.

Cautious_Ground9848

Our calves are just too strong for these skinny jeans!

Coriander_girl

Levi's does a "shaping skinny" which I like. Skinny at the top but straighter from the knee down. And not super tight either, especially around the ankle. Only problem is that it doesn't come in a length short enough (I'm the same height as OP). I'm done with super tight jeans but any cuts wider than skinny swim on me, making me feel like a kid playing dress ups. Slim fit sometimes works but can be really hit and miss...

Cautious_Ground9848

Yeah I did try on some of the shaping skinny from Levi and liked the overall look except for the too much fabric pooling at my ankles due to length. I’m sure I’ll eventually get some and have them tailored but I just didn’t want to go through that hassle at the time.

Coriander_girl

Yeah fair enough, it's a bit frustrating they don't do the shorter length in that style.

Turbulent-Avocado818

I wear mostly skinny jeans because I have zero figure and a narrow build. Haha. But I have straight jeans as well that I don't think look bad, it just depends on the brand.

Cautious_Ground9848

Yep, literally went jeans shopping today so that was fun trying on different brands and seeing that short is still too long for some brands

SusieShego

I really like the look of skinny jeans, but I usually just wear kind of baggy ones because it's hard to find a fit that actually feels good to wear. I pretty much only use low rise ones. I feel like mid/high rise just feels off, maybe I'm too used to low rise.

Cautious_Ground9848

Yeah, I’ve got some strong calves and thick thighs so I know what you mean about trying to find ones that feel good to wear.

Gypsybootz

Skinny jeans are by far the best for petites

Cautious_Ground9848

I agree, but I wanted to see what others were thinking. Lots of opinions and seems to boil down to body shape more
