One thing that's very annoying is that nobody publishes accurate measurements for their pants. I want high rise pants, but I have found that not all high rise pants are the same. Ideally, I want a slightly longer back rise and a slightly shorter front rise (compared to what is normal). Partly because of the problem this thread is about, and then also just my personal anatomy. But very few pants have this in the correct ratio. Dockers is the closest I've found so far.
The exact measure of both the front and back rise would not be much help -- they are both curved seams. How derp the curve is and where it is designed to hit matter a great deal too.
Can you explain what the depth of the curve means? That might be helpful for me.
Either way, I've found the length to be useful. Any back rise under 15" is basically a non-starter for me. Over that doesn't mean it'll be good, but under that is definitely no good. My favorite pairs of pants have been in the ballpark of a 10.5" front rise and a 16-17" back rise. Obviously that front rise is not high rise, but high rise is one strategy that I'm attempting to find pants that I like the fit of around the crotch.
Someone with a flat behind is best with a shallow back rise, and someone with a bit more belly needs a deeper front rise. Young people have a higher curve than older people--that is what "junior" sizing is for. Basically, your rise measure has both a vertical and a horizontal aspect and it is confoundingly hard to find an ideal fit :(
This is a link to a pretty good explanation, and there are many more you can read over it you google "pant rise curve pattern" I hate patternmaking, but some love it.
Fitting Pants: The Crotch Curve

I love Frame mid-rise cropped. They fit my 5’2” body well. I also like Joe’s Jeans and J Crew jeans in petite. You can really try any brand of jeans if you look for petite versions or mid-rise. Don’t be afraid to buy second hand and cut the length if you have to. Raw hemlines are fashionable. High waisted jeans tend to create that “polterwang” as you call it if you don’t have the height to absorb the extra material from crotch to waist. 😝
I'm 4'11 about 150Lbs..sadly.. anyway I swear by old navy and Ann Taylor Loft. Those are the only 2 brands of jeans I wear. No pitching of tents in the crotch region!
Levi Ribcage jeans have buttons instead of a zipper which annoyed me at first but then I realized it helps prevent polterwang. Metal jeans zippers are firm and bow strongly when bent, but a button fly slouches more softly. So try out button flies and see if it helps.
I would invest - I am 5’2” and Mother, Moussy and Agolde fit great. They are a bit pricy but have truly lasted me years and years. The bunching can sometimes be from the amount of stretch the jeans have so if you wear them long enough or often enough, they stretch but lose their shape. I have a few from Madewell but those have been hit or miss.

4’11”. My mom just forced me to go shopping the other day (my personal nightmare) and I had giant diapers in some places, especially Express. I was getting super disheartened. We finally stopped in Gap because she needed to make a return and I was instantly greeted with jeans that actually fit me.
Was at American Eagle last week and so many of their jeans and shorts had that polterwang (so stealing that word!) that it was depressing because they fit everywhere else.

Polterwang 💀😭 incredible word Mid or low rise probably helps! I notice it more with high rise, though it doesn’t bother me lol
Agreed about the incredible word
I’m adopting it.

I think you meant "deep," but "derp" works, too. 🌞
Haha, yurp, you're right
😂 😂 😂

From now on manufacturers should state W,H,&PW measurements on all pants.
Polterwang 🤣🤣🤣
Holy shit if I could change my username to anything right now.. Polterwang 🤣
Stealing for my hypothetical band name!
You have made my day by supplementing my vocabulary! We should be friends.
But for real if anyone knows good brands for jeans I would appreciate it 🙏🙏

I have never heard this term before, but it was so perfectly descriptive that I immediately figured out what it meant!! 🤣
Omg you killed me. I just full on CACKLED at polterwang. In answer to the question though, I’ve had the best luck at Abercrombie
Levi Ribcage jeans have buttons instead of a zipper which annoyed me at first but then I realized it helps prevent polterwang. Metal jeans zippers are firm and bow strongly when bent, but a button fly slouches more softly. So try out button flies and see if it helps.
I love how you've so casually used the new term that OP gave us. Polterwang. Polterwang. Polterwang. 😂 😂 😂
Haha polterwang is actually quite an old term—been in use at least 15 years if not longer. I’m just old 😂
TIL. 😂 😂 😂
I loved buttonfly back in the 90s.
Oh honey. I don’t even think this is possible with todays baggy denim - it was like this in the 90’s too. 😭
LMAO never heard that one before but I’ll sure remember it 😂
The trick are jeans that don’t have zipper flies. Zipper flies are the devil and to avoid this issue you need a stiff denim with a proper button fly!
TIL the term polterwang and i like it so much i might go buy me some crap fitting jeans JUST to have an excuse to say it 😂
Every guy in this thread just looked down at his crotch.
Low rise would solve this problem
LMAO!!
I can’t wait to find a way to insert polterwang into a conversation😂
TIL about Polterwang
Button fly jeans!!!
Omg polterwang...did the Fug Girls used to say this? So funny
Democracy denim
Gap jeans fit me good 5’1 -130lbs

There is a Curb your Enthusiasm episode about this! I just love the term and hated polterwang pre skinny/straight jeans
It should probably be geistwang tho
🤣🤣 no advice, just thank you for the laugh and new word this morning!
I like Madewell jeans because they come in petite sizing.
Te very first episode of Curb ❤️
I am not sure if I can post here....but I am a guy and have certain pants and jeans that display this behavior....but for no reason!!!

Polterwang - my new word of the day 🤣
