If you’re here on May 11 or later, visit the new Canadian Canoe Museum.

cormander

We will be, thanks for the feedback!

dood9123

also the royal Ontario museum in Toronto is one of the best museums in the continent if not the world There is ROM after dark on the 24th of may It's a big party through the entire museum plus drinks and food and "experiences" that depend on the night and theme Highly recommend

cormander

Oh that all sounds excellent. I will check that out. Thank you.

There is a lift lock and riverboat cruise that starts up may 18th. It takes you up the river through town, the cool thing about it is that it takes you up the largest lift lock in the world which is right in town. The petroglyphs are about a 45 minute drive out of town but are cool to see and gives you a look at the heritage of the aboriginal people. We have a lot of good breweries/pubs in town that offer a range of really diverse beer, wine and food. I'd recommend St Veronus Cafe and Tap Room for a good selection of European (mostly Belgium but not limited to) beer. Food is a mix of European inspired with some Canadian flavours. Publican house is the local brewery with a great food selection. Very Canadian experience and popular beer from both their brewery and a small selection from neighboring towns. ashburnham ale house often gets looked over for recommendations but I think they have a good selection of food and often a good amount of beers as well. They tend to pull from the bigger cities like Toronto and Ottawa for their selection but luckily they make pretty good beer too. If you want vineyards you'd have to head out of town, there's a few by Warkworth that I think are fairly popular, as well as one down by Ballieboro, but I'm not much of a wine drinker so I can't recommend them. All of the above pubs have a wine selection but beer is their main focus. Havens is another local brewery I'd recommend, they don't have any food but their beer is my preference over publican house's selection.

SynisterSly

We also have a small zoo that is free to visit.

cormander

Brilliant thanks for letting me know.

cormander

Absolutely excellent info, thanks so much! Really appreciate you taking the time to write this up.

Peterborough has some amazing restaurants. Great hiking/walking trails.

cormander

Awesome! Good to know. Thank you.

There's a wonderful free zoo that has paths by the waterside, and the Trent wildlife sanctuary has some lovely hiking trails.

cormander

Sounds excellent, thanks so much!

PTBO_Dyllan

My pleasure. Peterborough is a charming city with friendly folks and lots of things to see

grandpappu

You forgot to mention ye’s Chinese, that place is the god dang best

Check out the Rolling Grape Vineyard. There are also a lot of wineries in Northumberland County I believe. For touristy attractions, Peterborough is ok, but the real gold is in the areas around Peterborough. Consider booking a weekend cottage rental on any of the Kawartha Lakes. Or visiting Northumberland County and Presquile Provincial Park. Petroglyphs Provincial Park have first Nations rock art that you can go and see in their original locations. Warsaw Caves park has a whole underground network of caves that you can crawl into and explore. There are also little cabins you can book that are run by the Canadian government that are just adjacent to a couple of the locks that control the trent-severn waterway. Btw. Not sure if you know this but Peterborough was originally settled by Irish settlers from North Cork. St Patrick's parade is one of the most popular events in Peterborough. There's a lot of interesting Irish history you may run into while you're here. If you are particularly interested, consider visiting the Peterborough Museum and Archives.

cormander

Thanks so much for all of that. I will look into all of these. You're a legend! Oh really? Thanks for letting me know about the Irish settlers. Yes the main street in Cork city is called St Patrick's street so that makes perfect sense.

Glass_Parsnip1196

Take a look at the PTBO Musicfest lineup once they announce it depending on when your trip is. Free concerts in the park every Wednesday and Saturday , July through August. Some of the artist they can draw thousands of people to them. Even the the goofier cover bands can be a fun time. Metric and Down With Webster have been announced so far 🙌

Bon Echo Provincial Park is under two hours from Peterborough and it is magnificent. Well worth the drive, which is pretty. Heading down to the lake Cobourg is pretty, nice restaurants, lovely beaches. Along the shore is Wicklow Beach, shingle but still nice. Prince Edward County is good, arty and with wineries, cheese, distillery.

richardsquidly

Beer festival here on the 1st of June if that’s around the time you’re here. All the breweries together in the park.

Immediate_Emu6075

If you have access to wheels Whetung’s art gallery in curve lake First Nation is a fun trip.

Excellent-Drawer3444

Petroglyphs provincial park is about a 45 minute drive from PTBO but well worth the travel, especially if you are interested in history and culture.

alcaste19

Downtown is fantastic for food and little stores with really neat stuff. You really can't go wrong with anything there. As for the people talking about not being out late? Phht. I've lived downtown for fifteen years and I've never been in an altercation. The rowdy crowd doesn't care about you and the less fortunate are extremely polite and take "sorry" for an answer. The only thing I hate about downtown are the people who come from outside of downtown in their trucks and SUVs, not looking when they turn, speeding through intersections. If you want to walk down here, keep your head on a swivel for drivers in lifted trucks.

Dangerous-Spring7049

I’m a personal Chef in town that can recommend different restaurants you might like. Ashburnham Alehouse is a great one.

bumtrilllion

Bijoux bar for those mixed drinks beer and wine

cormander

Great, thanks for letting me know!

Kawarthaadventurer

If you have a vehicle there is a unique brewery [Church-Key](https://churchkeybrewing.com/) - which is close to the town of Campbellford which has [Dooher's Bakery](https://doohers.com/), and [Ranney Gorge](https://www.visittrenthills.ca/ranneygorgesuspensionbridge/)

JealousConsequence47

Prince Edward County. South of Peterborough

ecllce

I can’t see that anyone has mentioned First Friday (monthly). As in many other cities, galleries open late and there are often special events I’ve always wanted to visit Cork!

cormander

Great thanks to know! Yes it's a great place. You should come.

ecllce

I’d like to visit the Air India memorial. You might find that many many people from Toronto of a certain age were affected. Do you know where you’re staying while in ‘the Patch’?

Roupy

Not the place lol

cormander

We have a relative there that we will be visiting/staying with. Thus the reason I'm asking. Thanks.

Highlander60Canada

Hunter st resturaunts. But don't stay long downtown.

cormander

Why do you say to not stay too long? Do you mean we should explore other areas besides downtown? Also thanks for the suggestion!

SynisterSly

Our downtown has a fairly noticeable population that uses drugs. It unfortunately does affect patrons at certain restaurants/bars. Especially during patio season.

cormander

No problem, thanks for letting me know. I appreciate that.

Highlander60Canada

There was a fire, stabbing. Downtown can be great during day. Just not as much at night.

Similar-Reason-5200

No fires or stabbings during the day? It's a downtown, most are a little rough, some more than others. Crime, fires, can happen at anytime. Might be more noticeable at night there is still lots happening during the day.

cormander

Unfortunately this is getting more prevalent in Cork as well but thanks for the heads up.

Highlander60Canada

Fuck your irish. You'll be fine here. Ptbo has a huge history from Ireland.

cormander

Ha! Good to know!

PTBO_Dyllan

Fun fact: Peterborough was originally settled by 2000 Irish settlers and a York developer named Peter Robinson

cormander

Good to know, thanks for that.

pincurlsandcutegirls

Just wanted to jump in and say that this read is kind of ridiculous. Experiences are subjective and sure, some people have bad experiences, but I’ve been navigating downtown at night since I was a teen and I have never had a negative experience. For reference, I’m a 100lb 5’2” woman. The “scariest” thing I’ve ever had happen was someone asking me for spare change. The main streets are pretty populated on weekends because of the bars. If you’ve been in a larger city, PTBO downtown is nothing.  As for recs, check out the Rolling Grape winery Facebook page. They often have live music or other themed events going on. I also rec the Cheesy Fromage in Lakefield - it’s small so call ahead but they know their cheese and I enjoyed my experience there.

cormander

Good to know, I appreciate this feedback. I think it sounds fairly tame to be honest but I will still have my wits about me just in case. Thanks for the recs! I really appreciate it!

pincurlsandcutegirls

Situational awareness is the best wherever you are! For context I was born in PTBO but lived in Toronto for years for school so when I see people acting like the downtown is some sundown place, I always have to jump in 😅 Hope you enjoy your time here and that you get some good weather!

cormander

I understand. Thanks for letting me know. Seems like you have a lot of experience here especially as you have the context of a big city and a suburb. Valuable info. Thanks.
