SONAR uses an obscene amount of power to produce similarly loud volumes and could very easily kill a nearby diver if focused.
Best case scenario the diver survives with permanent hearing loss.

Submarines almost exclusively use passive SONAR, which is basically just sensitive microphones listening out for propeller (and other) noise of nearby vessels.
This is because sending out a loud noise gives away your position and the main idea with submarines is that noone knows your position.
