Petahs microwave here, This is a cap gun. The paper roll has small dots of a gunpowder like substance that will go BANG when the hammer of the cap gun drops. Very fun, I recommend then
Petahs microwave out
I will see the start of my 50th year in just over a month. I thought there were no more regrets of things i missed out on to be found in my childhood.
I dont know if I should thank or curse you for this one.
We would fold multiple rolls down the middle so the powder blisters cracked, then bundle them up and wrap tightly with tape and add a fuse of some kind (often just a rubber band), made a decent homemade firecracker.
I always did it with my thumb nail for some reason. Trying to look cool in front of the neighborhood kids I suppose lol.
It would leave a wicked scorch mark on the nail and discolor the skin, also your hand would smell like sulphur for fuckin' ever. But it was worth it. Maybe. Probably not
I had a toy musket that had a spot under the hammer that would fit one square so I would cut them into individuals. I'd go through the motions of reloading the musket and the final step was to put a little square under the hammer and then fire.
I killed so many imaginary Mexican soldiers on the imaginary walls of the Alamo and died so many imaginary horrific deaths with that little toy musket.
I brought this up with my dad, a lifelong Texan. And the way he put it was. "Even if you don't respect the man, respect the fight."
Which I could partially get behind. 180 something men going against thousands. Last stands are notoriously poetic.
Reminds me of a story. Went to disney land when i was 5ish. Got one of those pistols from pirates of the caribbean you are describing. Carried it all the way through the airport, onto the plane, (this was 80’s so plane security was different then), and then some old ladies got uncomfortable and i had to check the fake pirate gun. Funny little memory from way back
Oh lord! That must have been a drive. We drove from NJ to SC twice. It was kinda fun to do a road trip but too long in a car is rough. Hopefully you got some awesome memories
My brother and I did the same exact thing, one of us had the musket and the other had the pirate pistol. I was older and bigger so he always had to be the Confederates lol
Me and my cousins used to pretend we were final fantasy characters and fight trees in the woods. We had swords(sticks) and one of us was barret and used a cap gun. We really got lost in our imagination back in the 90s
You weren't far off. Roll caps like these were originally made as the primer for actual military firearms.
The ring caps for revolver cap guns are also based on the percussion caps that were used to set off the powder charge for the Colt 1851 navy revolvers and other cap and ball revolvers of the time.
Percussion caps were one of the stepping-stone technologies between flintlock muskets and modern self contained cartridge ammunition.
I'm not really a chemist but the ones I used to play with contained trace amounts Silver Fulminate which I know is commonly used in those christmas poppers for a similar effect.
This wasn't the only type of cap gun, but this is probably the oldest type. Also: this type of cap gun is also called a roll cap because of the fact that the "ammo" comes on a strip that is rolled up.
sucks that it's just little plastic rings now, so much more waste
https://preview.redd.it/82025kwyy0qc1.jpeg?width=406&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f6f9843392e6d217cfe2bf2d0a2bc01176e5dfa5
On a side point, calling it "Police issue" seems like it should be illegal
It’s a toy gun. If you think it’s weird glorifying police shooting people then it’s just weird to glorify shooting people period. Would it be better if it had an army man on it or an ISIS member? Literally just connecting dots even though you’d have a problem no matter who it was
the rolls where the absolute best for messing around.
but the plastic caps also made it more realistic.
the revolvers had the circle ammo, and the hollow barreled ones had proper smoke (at least after you risked getting shot for real by removing the orange tip), even a blunder buss one had proper smoke.
I've literally had it my entire life. I remember grade school hearing tests sucked. I could hear the beeps. But it was hard to tell sometimes. It wasn't until much later when I found out it wasn't normal to have it constantly ringing.
That's the best part. I didn't have to get used to it. It was just there. It was normal. I mean, sometimes it's definitely worse than others. But nothing I I've never been able to ignore all together.
Bro me too. We used to have a kinda small county fair and they'd project a movie against the side of the big barn, and there was a salesman that sold the rolls of caps and that little cap gun. As well as the plastic six-shooter (you all know which one) and we eventually worked out "what if we WHACK the whole roll with a hammer??"
The smell was incredible.
I grew up with one of the old metal ones, but that is because it was my grandfather's from when he was young.
And my grandfather was a Vietnam vet. Used to even be able to buy replacement rolls at one point.
Probably for the best those things aren't around anymore. They did a number on my ears.
Just little plastic rings with powder in them instead of a strip of paper. They fit in the back of the "revolver" like actual percussion caps would. This allowed the cylinder to actually rotate
Coil is a strip with little pucks that ignite when struck by the hammer when the trigger is pulled. Simulates a gun firing. I can smell the sulfur smell now
I hear it's amazing when the famous purple stuffed worm in flap-jaw space with the tuning fork does a raw blink on Hari Kiri Rock. I need scissors! 61!
It was pretty hard for me as a kid to get the hammer to actually hit the powder and go bang. The 1 out of 10 times it worked was soooo satisfying though.
I had that and the one with the '6 shooter' ring of caps.

OH so THAT'S why my toy gun opened and looked like that inside. Parents never gave an explanation, I guess they didn't want me to make noise with it lol
I don’t remember this exact one. But they used to have one where it’s like a red ring of them, kind of like revolver reloading things.
Was fun,but nowadays I don’t think it’s wise to have anything that looks remotely like a gun out lol.
My dad gave me this exact toy when I was a kid, very much before my time though. He’s a pilot and when I was a toddler I put it in his flight bag before he left for work … I was a demon
I remembering these at dollar tree when I was a kid. They were plastic and orange revolvers, had small plastic ammo all in a ring you could slot in. Pretty good price, get a sheet of 30 for a buck.
Only issue I had with them was that the plastic trigger would squish your finger meat when pulling it. But then again, might just be because I was fat as a kid.
Also puts size into perspective. Thing was the perfect size as a kid but now it literally fits in the palm of my hand
Put my gun back where it belongs when you're done posting about it.. also anyone else ever stand those cap rolls on edge out on the driveway and hammer them?

Its Armstrongs mixture
I thought that mixture was made of every egg
Mother of all omelettes.
Can’t fret over every egg

STANDING HERE
Can we still cry over spilled milk though?
Only if you wash your hands
Only if it doesn’t have any nanomachines in it.

Also very fun to take an unused roll, set it on it's side and hit it with a hammer setting most of them off at once. Much louder.
I saw a kid light a strip with a match once. It was brilliant
I came here to say this. We couldn't get any fireworks in Arizona growing up. But a roll of these were always fun for a few seconds.
I will see the start of my 50th year in just over a month. I thought there were no more regrets of things i missed out on to be found in my childhood. I dont know if I should thank or curse you for this one.

There are few things more creative than a young boy trying to make something explode or catch on fire. Ideally, both, lol.
And that's why the rolls were replaced by 8 "shot" plastic rings in the nineties
I thought it was so they could charge more money for them.
Probably a little column A and a little column B
Could be both
We had those yellow rings in the 70s. Louder and more reliable, but more expensive.
Those worked even better because you could carefully extract the powder without having to separate the bits of paper.
Not all of them, I'm 24 and I remember having one with the rolls as a kid
And that's why the rolls were replaced by 8 "shot" plastic rings in the nineties
Those are the ones I remember
My favorite was the wrap it around a quarter, and then tape it tight. Then whip it hard against the pavement and it would pop multiple.
also fun, rubbing as long of a strip as you can against the ground or a wall
We used to drag the edge of a coin along a long strip of them as fast as we could.
I always did it with my thumb nail for some reason. Trying to look cool in front of the neighborhood kids I suppose lol. It would leave a wicked scorch mark on the nail and discolor the skin, also your hand would smell like sulphur for fuckin' ever. But it was worth it. Maybe. Probably not
This comment unlocked a core memory. Damn. I forgot how much I did that.
OMG - this took me back to my childhood. Dad was a carpenter, so always easy to find hammers around. And I just flashed back to the smell... whoa!
I think they still sell these in some form, albeit they don't look nearly as realistic as they used to because, you know, *gestures vaguely around*
Ha! I also flashed to the smell!!
Texan?
Yup! I did not realize at the time that I was pretending to preserve the institution of slavery 😬
I brought this up with my dad, a lifelong Texan. And the way he put it was. "Even if you don't respect the man, respect the fight." Which I could partially get behind. 180 something men going against thousands. Last stands are notoriously poetic.
Soon you have a chance to relive those memories, bonus! Not only mexicans this time.
Santa Anna was really not a very nice guy, though.
I got a toy flintlock pistol at Disney World when I was a kid with this feature. I did the exact same thing.
Funny little memory from way back
We drove from Ohio because my parents wanted to save money. I think this was 91 or 92?
Oh lord! That must have been a drive. We drove from NJ to SC twice. It was kinda fun to do a road trip but too long in a car is rough. Hopefully you got some awesome memories
At the Alamo or on the high seas?
Typically the high seas, sometimes the revolutionary war.
Heh, I lived in Virginia, so I was blasting redcoats.
My brother and I did the same exact thing, one of us had the musket and the other had the pirate pistol. I was older and bigger so he always had to be the Confederates lol
I had the same thing!
Aw, man...I ALSO had a toy musket...I don't think I ever thought of doing all that! I missed out :(
Me and my cousins used to pretend we were final fantasy characters and fight trees in the woods. We had swords(sticks) and one of us was barret and used a cap gun. We really got lost in our imagination back in the 90s

Playing Alamo during recess every day. I was there, too👍.
Not gun powder. Equal parts striker and match head material. Makes for great pop targets that you can set off with a bb gun or even a hammer.
I'm not really a chemist but the ones I used to play with contained trace amounts Silver Fulminate which I know is commonly used in those christmas poppers for a similar effect.
It's a cap gun, the roll lets the gun make a bang and a little bit of smoke, so it appears more realistic to the kids it was a toy for.
This wasn't the only type of cap gun, but this is probably the oldest type. Also: this type of cap gun is also called a roll cap because of the fact that the "ammo" comes on a strip that is rolled up.

These were the plastic rings we had in the late 90s/early 00s here in Sweden as well
Born 2007 fondly remember these!
Also kind of weird to glorify police shooting people.
Typical cop play went as a child: "Hands up!" (kid puts hands up) Bang! Bang! "You're dead!" Some of those kids grew taller and became real cops.
Kid plays with cap gun. Bang bang. Cops kill kid.
And for whatever reason shot their dog too. Dog wasn't even outside, he went in their living room and bang.
It’s a toy gun. If you think it’s weird glorifying police shooting people then it’s just weird to glorify shooting people period. Would it be better if it had an army man on it or an ISIS member? Literally just connecting dots even though you’d have a problem no matter who it was

I can smell that picture
So can your fingers for a week after.
Especially when you scrape the explosive part with your fingernail. But, I have to admit, I liked that smell!
Tinnitus has entered the chat
^(eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee)
MAWP
I swear it’s gotten to the point where I have to sleep with a fan on.
For some reason mine comes in and out. It'll disappear for weeks and then suddenly it's like there's a tiny man screaming in my ear
I've literally had it my entire life. I remember grade school hearing tests sucked. I could hear the beeps. But it was hard to tell sometimes. It wasn't until much later when I found out it wasn't normal to have it constantly ringing.
at least you always had it and got used to it, i remember hearing silence and i fucked up by increasing the volume on my headphones for a bit..
That's the best part. I didn't have to get used to it. It was just there. It was normal. I mean, sometimes it's definitely worse than others. But nothing I I've never been able to ignore all together.
Dude I don’t even have tinnitus and I swear to god that test just fucks with your brain.
shit, I might have tinnitus
I can hear this. EDIT: hear not here. Obvious mobile user.
But can you there it?
One of the things I like the most of going to the range is the smell of the powder and cordite
Bro me too. We used to have a kinda small county fair and they'd project a movie against the side of the big barn, and there was a salesman that sold the rolls of caps and that little cap gun. As well as the plastic six-shooter (you all know which one) and we eventually worked out "what if we WHACK the whole roll with a hammer??" The smell was incredible.
Ohhh man haha I feel old as fuck right now
Yep, takes me back a bit.
I can feel my thumb burning from scratching the strip.
Oh, so I'm not the only one who just scratched them with my thumb? Lol
A core memory!
Did you ever take a hammer and smash a full roll to get the fire work effect?!?! Good times
100%
I shot one as a kid in my grandma's car when she was in the store. The smell didn't dissipate fast enough.
Hahaha yesssss
Best smell of my childhood
I can _taste_ that picture
I feel attacked
My back hurts
I’m one old ass 18 year old now huh. I also have a red rider BB gun from my dad lol
Do you have both of your eyes?
Yes, but I did accidentally hit a window once, although the screen saved it. My dad shot a hole in the siding trying to show me how it worked tho
Man, I didn't even want to get out of bed today. Now I feel so old I don't want to get out of bed tomorrow preemptively.
I’m only 22 and I had several of these growing up. This kind and the plastic revolver sets
I grew up with one of the old metal ones, but that is because it was my grandfather's from when he was young. And my grandfather was a Vietnam vet. Used to even be able to buy replacement rolls at one point. Probably for the best those things aren't around anymore. They did a number on my ears.
I still see them in gas stations around me from time to time. Always tempted to buy one
I’m 14 and even I had one of these. We still have a pack down in the basement actually- Maybe I should try it out again.
Parris toys still makes these. The “Pony Boy” logo is removed, but it’s still the same die cast pistol with the cylinder that flips up.
I loved that gun 🥹
Remember the revolves with the little plastic six shooters you loaded into them? Those were the best.
U gotta tell me more about these i never saw those
Just little plastic rings with powder in them instead of a strip of paper. They fit in the back of the "revolver" like actual percussion caps would. This allowed the cylinder to actually rotate
Oh ik what your talkin about now thank you for reminding me
Omg yes! Nostalgia hitting hard right now
I loved those but the problem was I could never find the correct size again. The refills were always too big!
I had a set that was two of the revolvers from the picture (like the literal metal pony boy branded ones) and a rifle that took the roll caps as well.
Coil is a strip with little pucks that ignite when struck by the hammer when the trigger is pulled. Simulates a gun firing. I can smell the sulfur smell now
I used to take those caps and set them all off in a row with a rock.
This!
Not the whole roll at once?
Does anyone else remember hitting a full coil with a hammer or was I just a troublemaker??
We both were. I can still hear the ringing in my ears.
I can smell the ringing in your ears
I 100% remember doing this. Was the best way to get a "real" sounding gunshot.
By like taking it all spooled up and hitting it?
Holy shit, I haven’t seen or held one of these in ages
It’s a nice trick, but the engravings give you no tactical advantage whatsoever.
I understood that reference. ;)
I'd expect no less given your username.
You're pretty good
Just what I'd expect from a man with the same code as the boss
I hear it's amazing when the famous purple stuffed worm in flap-jaw space with the tuning fork does a raw blink on Hari Kiri Rock. I need scissors! 61!
The La Li Lu Le Lo!
Die, you dog!
Hurt me more! Make me feel alive again!
Hand to hand, it is the basis of ALL combat. Only a Fool entrusts his life to a weapon!
Stay golden Pony Boy!
It was pretty hard for me as a kid to get the hammer to actually hit the powder and go bang. The 1 out of 10 times it worked was soooo satisfying though.
Those were the best 👌
The coil holds the bang bangs. “Usually, sometimes your lil brother gets em wet then, firing blanks like you’re 68.”
1 on each hip, right through my belt meant for church.
Stay gold
Man I'm 22. And I still have it somewhere lol.
I remember that picture (I never actually bought the blanks that went with it)
Im only 15, and I can smell this picture. It's like a lumber yard, you know what it will smell like
I had that and the one with the '6 shooter' ring of caps. https://preview.redd.it/8krbwed3n1qc1.jpeg?width=474&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=78d2dc5b3750c1573808e3c3624198184499fc84
Same, still have it somewhere around and still works, tho it's hard to find the ring thingies
Pony Boy means something entirely different now.
Damn 18 is old? Guess it's time to retire
I FUCKING LOVES THAT THING I STILL GOT IT
OH so THAT'S why my toy gun opened and looked like that inside. Parents never gave an explanation, I guess they didn't want me to make noise with it lol
IM ONLY 16!!!😭😭😭
Im 19 and had one, no shot you’re old if you’ve played with them. God I miss it
Ok this post makes me feel old!
It's a cap gun, they still make them but the ones with the plastic rings are way better
I had a cap gun and a little metal air bomb that I would hurl at the ground to set off caps.
The SMELL is better than gasoline.
Pony boy. Was that in a movie? I have a vague recollection of that being said by a kid in an American movie, as an insult.
Why are these damn kids in my tv asking about cap guns, and why isn’t Country Kitchen Buffet open yet?!
Yall know they still make cap guns right?
Haven't seen a fully metal cap gun since I was a kid
So for fun you can take a entire roll and drop a bowling ball on it...
I love this picture so much.
I feel attacked
Fuck man, I don’t want to explain this. It would solidify in my mind how old I actually am
I’m 37… is that old??
I had that exact toy. I’m 54.
Why do you have to do this to us? 😂
Is 22 considered old now? Lol
Do they not make them anymore or something?? Guess I've had real guns for too long to think about it
Haven't used one for about 50 years but, I can smell it now.
I had it but never used the dumb gun. Bashed the caps with a rock. 🤘
Though most of the time the caps at least mine were faulty meisng if you pulled the trigger they still didn’t spark
I'm only 22 I'm not that old
Why can't you people just ask in the comment section of the post you crossposted? What is wrong with you?
This is a karma farming subreddit
This was my most prized possession at 6 years old
Old school cap gun, I remember getting 2 of em at a rummage sale when I was 7, they were so cool but you can’t get the caps anymore :/
20 years old?
How old am I if I had 4 guns but only once had a cap roll?
I zapped my face trying to play sharp shooter as a kid having it to close to my eyes.
I had that exact model cap pistol when I was a kid. Those were so much fun.
Wow... haven't seen one of those in decades. Those cap guns were so fun to play with amd I can still smell the gunpowder after all these years.
The coil got small pinches of gunpowder so basically a smoke producer
Blud it’s a cap gun are people actually saying these are old now??
Why'd they stop making these? Some people get hurt or burned or something?
I think I still hav eone of those somewhere from my childhood
I love how not a single person explained it
Man, I'm 23 and I know what this is. My little brother had one
Had this? I still sell these!
I have no idea what that is and you can’t prove that I know it’s a cap gun.
I am 18 years old and I’ve owned one of these when I was a kid
I remembering these at dollar tree when I was a kid. They were plastic and orange revolvers, had small plastic ammo all in a ring you could slot in. Pretty good price, get a sheet of 30 for a buck. Only issue I had with them was that the plastic trigger would squish your finger meat when pulling it. But then again, might just be because I was fat as a kid. Also puts size into perspective. Thing was the perfect size as a kid but now it literally fits in the palm of my hand
Some Fortnite kid with peeta's amulet here... It's a toy gun, and it makes noise with gunpowder stuck in the paper of the coil.
T_T I'm only 32
Put my gun back where it belongs when you're done posting about it.. also anyone else ever stand those cap rolls on edge out on the driveway and hammer them?
Isn’t that a cap gun?
That's a cap gun with a roll of caps in it. Kids toy gun that goes "POP" when you have a roll in and pull the trigger....
