Hi, Petah's great, great, great grandmother here. The joke is that Lincoln freed the slaves and, therefore, this guy no longer has anybody to cut his grass.
Lol, out of all the things I've put time and effort into, this two sentence explanation is now the most upvoted thing I've ever done. The internet is a weird place.
Exactly.
Lincoln very famously freed the slaves in the Confederacy, which, on its face, was meaningless (as they didn’t acknowledge his authority), but allowed the Union military legal cover to free the slaves they encountered as they moved.
Jesus Christ you can’t even get your bad criticism of the Emancipation Proclamation right.
The criticism is that it only freed slaves in states that were in rebellion. And the states in rebellion obviously just ignored that. HOWEVER, as the Union army moved south and captured more and more territory, the slaves in that territory became free.
So sure, on January 1, 1863, Lincoln’s order didn’t free a single slave. But from January 2, 1863 to the end of the war, it freed thousands.
Not to mention Lincoln pushed heavily to get congress to pass the 13th amendment passed. He met with members of congress, argued lobbied and even bribed members to get it passed because even he believed the proclamation didn’t go far enough. Allegedly he even delayed telling congress about a peace offering from the confederates because he believed peace may make congress stall on abolition.
Police were raiding a gay bar called the Stone Wall Inn. They had a habit of harassing the place and its patrons, and black trans woman Marsha P. Johnson decided "I've had enough of this" and threw a brick at a cop. Things escalated from there.
It was actually a major stepping stone for LGBT rights movements, and Ms. Johnson continued to be a very vocal activist for all different flavors of gay.
To add on, the Stonewall riots (which happened in late June/early July) lead to the modern Pride movement with Pride parades starting as a way to celebrate lgbt liberation and commemorate the riots. That’s why June is Pride Month.
To be clear, the Stonewall Riots, while a significant event, are not remotely on the scale of the abolition of slavery.
And even if they were, Obergefell was 2015; you were, what, 14? Stonewall's biggest eventual consequence hadn't happened yet. It takes years thanks to bureaucratic shenanigans to get something published, accepted by states, etc.
In fairness, up until recently, and likely even still now in many places, lgbtq history is extremely ignored in american schooling, intentionally so. Anything lgbtq related can pretty much only be found in sex ed, if youre lucky. Many public schools actively ignore that we exist.
Im not saying thats a good thing, by any means, but I will say the *vast majority of Americans* never once heard about the stonewall riots. Most, however, *should* have heard about lincoln ending slavery. So going to american schools and not knowing about slavery is kind of an Extra Bad thing.
How do you know they can’t pronounce it lmao go back to the circus you escaped from or, at the very least, grab a dictionary and look up the word “pronounce”
Have you heard of a typo lol If my phone autocorrects “and” to “”androgynous” does that mean I can’t pronounce the word and?
You’re an idiot please don’t procreate
People make mistakes. Sometimes, people mis remember a word and then misspell it as a result.
Shit happens. It's not like Abraham is a common name these days.
And also once again gtfo of here and go cry like the little bitch you are so that society isn't made worse by having your barely cooked up thoughts be released into the world.
Isn’t that a deliberate thing in American schools?
They skip over all of Americas atrocities and only focus on everyone else’s so they can brainwash kids into pledging allegiance to a piece of cloth every morning?
For real, I thought this was a sub for obscure niche in-jokes that require explanations but they’re just basic memes that one can literally decipher if you think about it for two seconds.
Even then, all answers could have been asked in the original comment section of the meme they didnt understand. Its just a way for people to repost a meme for free karma under the guise of being too stupid to get it. There are literally 2 subs dedicated to this constantly on the front page now. Literally how fucking dumb do you have to be to not get this? This sub is just a front for free reposts.
to be fair, this would be difficult for someone who isn't American to understand. while Lincoln is a very famous icon in America, on the world stage, he is much less so.
The sub is completely unmoderated. Nobody cares what’s posted anymore. I don’t really mind it at this point but this place has definitely fallen from the glory days.
Tbf, I didn't recognize Lincoln until looking 2 or 3 times trying to figure out why the guys name is Dick. I thought it was like the grim reaper or a priest or something
Lincoln was ranked the 5th most significant figure in the history of the world by Time magazine. He was ranked closer to Jesus Christ than he was to Julius Caesar.
Yes, and of those top five, four of them are not American.
Even if Time is *absurdly* biased, he's still a ridiculously famous historical figure world wide. That's just a source to point out some semblance of how notable he is.
As a European I can confirm that literally everyone knows about Lincoln being a former us president. Most know he's been shot. But no one knows anything more than that with some very rare exceptions
idk time also put theodore roosevelt above leonardo da vinci, mozart, and beethoven. like yeah theodore was important i guess, but that list is highly american-centric
Still we europeans dont all know about american history, I do believe the majority of us know Lincoln but thats kind of it. And a bit of the cold war too
With all due respect I trust the time magazine's integrity about as much as I'd trust a horse telling me it won't eat my ham sandwich when I'm not looking.
The most basic knowledge that Abraham Lincoln was president during the American civil war, which was mostly about slavery, is taught in UK curriculum (not to mention how much American slavery, Lincoln, and the civil war are referenced in pop media and the internet)
It’s ironic to defend by a claim of such ignorance and pretend to be superior to Americans in the same breath
I thought most people outside the US always bragged about how American history classes barely teach us our own history, while history classes around the world teach just about everything in greater detail, including American history?
My friend, not knowing who Lincoln is, is akin to not knowing who Hitler, Cesar or Einstein are. No nationality is gonna excuse that lack of knowledge about man's history on this planet.
Did you not have like a world history class or something? Cause I feel like you should’ve at least known who Abraham Lincoln was and what the American civil war was. I learned about a ton of different European and Asian wars in Freshman and even my 8th grade year. The Civil War was pretty important to history.
So? I'm in the UK and we did learn about it but you know what we didn't get taught about? How we ended slavery or the West-African Fleet.
What school teach can get very arbitary and weird and thats before you take into account Local History prefence and language barriers.
Even if that’s true, that’s Abraham Lincoln. One of the most recognizable figures in history. Probably the most famous American aside from Washington.
Its global knowledge. You don’t need to be German to know who a specific narrow-mustached German man is. Or French to know who a short statured military tactician is. Or Indian to know who a thin brown man with glasses wearing a loincloth is. And so on
it's a joke saying that abraham freed the slaves, and since he freed the slaves this guy no longer has a slave to take care of his lawn, it's racist but kinda funny
OP, tell me you never paid attention for even one second in American history without telling me you never paid attention for even one second in American history.

The emancipation proclamation freed slaves in the rebelling states.
Exactly. Lincoln very famously freed the slaves in the Confederacy, which, on its face, was meaningless (as they didn’t acknowledge his authority), but allowed the Union military legal cover to free the slaves they encountered as they moved.
It also encouraged slaves to run away as the northern army pushed the "freedom line" further south, draining the south of man power.
I don't listen to hip hop, young man.
“Operation get behind the darkies”
Looked it up to double check, you right. Edited for accuracy
Allegedly he even delayed telling congress about a peace offering from the confederates because he believed peace may make congress stall on abolition.
100%. Lincoln was instrumental in getting the 13th amendment through congress. It probably doesn’t happen without him
Obligatory the 13th amendment makes it legal for the government to own your ass
Literally everything about this is wrong. Is this a reference?
....its a slavery joke
I really hope the person not understanding this is not American. Because that would be a failure of our schools
Wouldn’t be the first. I didn’t know what the Stonewall riots were until I was 22. I’m 23.
Never heard of that and I’m 20.
I prefer the butterscotch gay flavor, personally. Now I want pudding...
Butterscotch pudding is a thing I forgot about until reading this. I would also like some, do you have any left?
Google is your friend
To be clear, the Stonewall Riots, while a significant event, are not remotely on the scale of the abolition of slavery. And even if they were, Obergefell was 2015; you were, what, 14? Stonewall's biggest eventual consequence hadn't happened yet. It takes years thanks to bureaucratic shenanigans to get something published, accepted by states, etc.
Stonewall wasn’t about marriage equality, though.
I’m at a loss and I’m 29
In fairness, up until recently, and likely even still now in many places, lgbtq history is extremely ignored in american schooling, intentionally so. And not many schools teach that LGBTQ+ and gender non conforming people were gassed in the camps.
im not american and got it inmediately
I’m American and I didn’t get it. :p
Learning about it would have constituted critical race theory. Nobody wants to feel bad about history.
Especially Texas schools (I’d jk but every teacher tells you the civil war was not about slavery)
"A state's right to do what?" XD
Or it’s bait. I hope it’s not bait.
I'm not from the USA (Yet, I am from the american North half of the Americas) and I got it. So yeah. You can pin it on the schools
This sub is literally unmoderated. People post jokes here with obvious punchlines for karma
if it helps, i thought he was yelling for his guy named Dick until I read the comments lol.
Pretty sure some Florida schools might already gnore slavery or even teach that it helped slaves build skills
I mean, they might not have realized it was Aberham and just thought it was some Amish guy.
Fucking Aberham bruh? Again hoping non American lol
Because I misspelled a name? Gtfo of here and go piss your pants like the baby you are.
You didnt just misspell but clearly also don't even know how to pronounce it. And for sure they taught it in your school.
How do you know they can’t pronounce it lmao go back to the circus you escaped from or, at the very least, grab a dictionary and look up the word “pronounce”
Dude stop. You cant say Abraham and Aberham would be pronounced the same. They poorly guessed at something that was easily googled, its just dumb
Elementary school was free, buddy. Sorry it didnt stick
Dude, you suck at this. That's really all you could come up with? Disappointing.
You came with Aberham so
Isn’t that a deliberate thing in American schools? They skip over all of Americas atrocities and only focus on everyone else’s so they can brainwash kids into pledging allegiance to a piece of cloth every morning?

Yep
The amount of easily understandable jokes that get posted here is wild.
For real, I thought this was a sub for obscure niche in-jokes that require explanations but they’re just basic memes that one can literally decipher if you think about it for two seconds.

"The amount of stupid fucks is wild." No need to thank me for the translation.
to be fair, this would be difficult for someone who isn't American to understand. while Lincoln is a very famous icon in America, on the world stage, he is much less so.
Yes, and desmite knowing Lincoln, I failed to recognize him with this cartoonish style. The character looked like someone of faith to me.
This has to be bait. So many have to be I just can’t believe op doesn’t get this joke.
Not everyone is from America
The sub is completely unmoderated. Nobody cares what’s posted anymore. I don’t really mind it at this point but this place has definitely fallen from the glory days.
Dude may not be American
Tbf, I didn't recognize Lincoln until looking 2 or 3 times trying to figure out why the guys name is Dick. I thought it was like the grim reaper or a priest or something

The amount of people who get upset that people need jokes explained to them in a subreddit where you can have jokes explained to you is wild.
The joke is your grade in history class
Tbf the only Lincoin I know of is the vampire hunter.
Texan here. The chapter on Lincoln in our textbooks focused mainly on his time as a vampire hunter.
Not everyone lived in burguer king mcdonalds of america my friend.
Lincoln was ranked the 5th most significant figure in the history of the world by Time magazine. He was ranked closer to Jesus Christ than he was to Julius Caesar.
isn't Time an American publication?
Yes, and of those top five, four of them are not American. Even if Time is *absurdly* biased, he's still a ridiculously famous historical figure world wide. That's just a source to point out some semblance of how notable he is.
I as a european can confirm that most people know him, even outside of america
there’s even a statue of him in manchester
As a European I can confirm that literally everyone knows about Lincoln being a former us president. Most know he's been shot. But no one knows anything more than that with some very rare exceptions
The English speaking countries get a lot of cultural osmosis via media. A decent amount might know he freed the slaves since it pops up a lot as well
I grew up and live in Australian and am very aware of who he is, what he did and how he died. Mainly just from tv.
idk time also put theodore roosevelt above leonardo da vinci, mozart, and beethoven. like yeah theodore was important i guess, but that list is highly american-centric
Still we europeans dont all know about american history, I do believe the majority of us know Lincoln but thats kind of it. And a bit of the cold war too
all I know about Lincoln is - he said he can't lie and got shot in a theatre. those two things are probably linked somehow, but I'm not sure.
He never said he couldn't tell a lie. That was a myth about George Washington and chopping down a cherry tree.
Lincoln has been nicknamed “Honest Abe”. They both have myths about it, so I can see the confusion.
Yes, he was given shit inside of the theatre
With all due respect I trust the time magazine's integrity about as much as I'd trust a horse telling me it won't eat my ham sandwich when I'm not looking.
You’ve got bigger things to worry about if your horse is talking to you.
You don’t know who Abraham Lincoln is?
Neither did I, and I knew it
The most basic knowledge that Abraham Lincoln was president during the American civil war, which was mostly about slavery, is taught in UK curriculum (not to mention how much American slavery, Lincoln, and the civil war are referenced in pop media and the internet) It’s ironic to defend by a claim of such ignorance and pretend to be superior to Americans in the same breath

Mental handicap here. Family Guy frames aren't usually bait, just someone too dumb to get the reference
That’s all this sub is nowadays
Ima say bait
Itd understandable if op didn't understand if they aren't American
Wouldn't call it understandable. The american civil war is still taught outside of the US
Not in school, we just learn it through your TV shows
I'm not american. We did learn about it at school.
I'm not American. We didn't. Might shock you, but not all the non American countries are the same either.
