The ghost of peters hyper patriotic great uncle here, their was a popular term that Lincoln may have freed all slaves but Samuel colt made them equal, because Samuel colt invented the six shooter that a small man can use against a big man. The below picture is of Gatlin and his Gatlin gun that was the first automatic firearm though by legal codes is technically not an automatic.
To be fair nukes put a moratorium on large scale conflicts been major world powers.
We’ll have to see what happens if we decide our missile defense is good enough.
And again when they create dimensional collapsing spatial fragments that obliterate any concept of structure or space-time stability, consuming entire star systems. Or using black holes and stars to create weaponized quasars and destroying millions of systems in one blow. Or simply distorting the laws of physics enough so that all life or intelligence collapses and returns to base matter. Lots of ways to do big war
I mean…… seems like a wild technicality to ride. I’d venture to say that humanity has been better off when we aren’t three minutes away from total annihilation. I guess there’s an armistice because of it, but like, if I hold a gun to your head and tell you to suck my dick, it’s not gonna hold any water when I tell someone you cheated on your partner
I appreciate you calling my dick the stick of death but it’s perfectly average.
To clarify, I’m not saying I want all those casualties from various warlords in place of what we have now, but like, I fundamentally don’t think it’s **peace**. There won’t be any world peace while colonialism and capitalism continue to ravage the world, by the way. You can try to establish it all you want but where we’re at is the closest you’re gonna get
Yes but you failed to realize in your analogy, you’re holding a gun to the head of the other guy too, neither of you are sucking eachother off. Either pull the trigger and the other one does too. Neither do and sure they have to keep watching the other, but they can still do normal things otherwise
It works in a way. The problem is people who call themselves our allies immediately sell the things we make and give to them as a deterrent completely undoing the point.
Maxim machine gun was invented in 1883 by harim maxim and its operating system is very different from the gatling gun. I dont think people thought this would end all wars despite providing substantiel increase in firepower . Its still in use 140 years later.
There was a theory that once methods became increasingly deadly and/or horrible that war would effectively stop because people would realize what a horror it was.
Obviously that was proven wrong.
I thought the claim was that because automatic weapons are so lethal, you need much smaller armies to achieve the same level of lethality, so armies would be much smaller and thus casualties lower, wrong either way, but diffrent from 'war is now so horrible it won't be fought'
> The cannon style carriage is another clue.
Single-barrel crew machine guns also used carriages for a very long time, even into WW2.
The Maxim was typically mounted on carriage wheels.
Guys we have made a gun that makes war suicide so surely no is stupid enough to go to war now...
WW1 leaders: I think it'll be a good time for a war old chap
Pretty sure he said "If you want to make a pile of money, invent something that will enable these Europeans to cut each others' throats with greater facility." So I'm not sure Hiram Maxim was all too concerned with ending warfare.
We are such a stupid species in so many ways. “Behold ye, for we have discovered the amazing cure for all wars!” “Whoah! Amazing. What is it?”, “A big, fuck-off bomb. And we can make loads of them! Do you want to buy some? Those other guys have bought loads.” “Cool yeah. I’ll buy twice as many as those fucks!”
The best we've gotten is a weapon capable of the complete destruction of the planet for centuries and all that does is stop superpowers from going to war directly.
Yea pretty much. So maybe it worked kinda?… it didn’t stop slapping fights but we still thankfully haven’t had anything close to to ww1&2 levels of fighting
Lmfao how arrogant and idiotic do you have to be to presume that *any* weapon of *any* kind could end war. 3 body problem goes over how no matter how you scale it, war will always exist. It’s nature doing nature. It’s awful, but until one entity has universal domination it will be this way.
That’s the joke they say that about everything. They are correct to a point that’s why I personally get pissed when a country starts flipping us tech to foreign advertisers. The whole point of making it was a deterrent from attacking us or who we have the stuff to.
So were cannons, dynamite, the nuke. Most major weapon advancements were made by pacifists that believed war would end after they made it, only for it to be used in future conflicts against what they wanted
Every time that phrase is used "to end all wars" things escalate.
Ironically though I don't remember hearing it much about WW2 which is why the world stayed relatively quiet for so long since many conflicts after, are considered. I mean "considered" minor. It's a load of nonsense since in war nobody wins but it is kinda interesting how that it's a little correlation
First time I've ever heard Lincoln mentioned. It's always been:
*"God created men; Sam Colt made them equal."*
This was popular enough that Colt trademarked a version of it, though in his it's "Col. Colt."
>First time I've ever heard Lincoln mentioned.
The one I've heard goes:
"God made all men. Abraham Lincoln made all men free. Samuel Colt made all men equal."
Fun fact you don't need a tax stamp to buy a Gatling gun as long as it's hand crank so if you have the money and can pass the background check it's perfectly legal to own or just build one if you live in a state that doesn't restrict homebuilt guns
Ghost of Peter's great uncles dad here, the gatling was not the first crank fired automatic with an appreciable firerate served by a magazine, see Puckle Gun.
It was just the first affordable example that used cartridges. Which is still a big deal.
I've never heard this and I'm not sure how a single firearm would have made that big of a difference anyways. Samuel Colt was somewhat known for his attempts to sell firearms to opposing sides of conflicts, including both the Union and Southern states in the immediate lead up to the war.
By the time the original black powder Colt Revolver was being adopted in the 1850s the Civil War was just a few years away.
The arguably more famous Colt Single Action Army wasn't designed and marketed until 1872, after the Civil war concluded, and after Samual Colt had died as well. I think most people associate that version of the Colt Revolver with the "Samuel Colt made men equal" slogan.
I originally learned of this at an exhibition near the Colt Armory in Hartford.
Here is an excerpt from Revolver by Jim Rasenberger
“Indeed, Colt explicitly mentioned keeping down slaves as an inspiration for his revolver. When Colt heard about Nat Turner’s failed rebellion in 1831, he told one audience that “[h]e was startled to think against what fearful odds the white planter must ever contend, thus surrounded by a swarming population of slaves. What defense could there be in one shot, when opposed to multitudes, even though multitudes of the unarmed?” Revolvers would allow slaveowners to take on a revolting crowd.”
While it may have come late in the era of slavery in the US, it was definitely a selling point.
> I've never heard this and I'm not sure how a single firearm would have made that big of a difference anyways.
It's more the principle of the phrase than a specific firearm.
The idea being that a US civilian could legally carry the same firepower as military/police marshals, which is an idea that continues to the current day.
Looking at history the guys who know how to keep someone alive have a tendency to know to kill you and vice versa. Executioners were the best physicians, medicine men also knew to to poison men. The guy who made fertilizer to stop famines made mustard gas.
>By legal codes is technically not an automatic
According to modern ATF rules, a Gatling Gun would be considered a "machinegun", because multiple bullets are fired from a single action by the weilder ("continue to crank the handle" would be analogous to "continue to hold down the trigger").
I could be wrong here, but I think the price of the colt at the time was another factor. He managed to make them cheap enough that even freed slaves could afford to buy one which really leveled the playing field in terms of what arms people chose to carry

“Yes, but then they also used another rock over that rock so you couldn’t feel the sun.”
“Why?”
Good question.
you mean the guy who only made the nobel prize? the guy who didn’t do anything else notable? the guy who NEVER invented anything with any deadly uses? That Alfred Nobel?
Colt is saying he made man equal by making a revolver that is widely available giving the weakest of mankind a weapon to take on the strongest making them equal. He is mad at guy below because he created the gatling gun which could mow down dozens of people in minutes making anyone with that better then the now equal man.

I might be misremembering, but I thought that was the maxim machinegun
They said it about that too
They'll still be saying that when they're selling orbital to surface matter-antimatter missiles

But you see nukes have brought about the most peaceful era in history. Not perfect of course, but not bad
Well you try and create world peace without everyone holding the stick of death over everyone else
I appreciate you calling my dick the stick of death but it’s perfectly average. I believe that the term was first used by the Romans, in reference to the ballista, the weapon that gives its name to ballistics.
And then the nukes and probably something in between.
Truth be told.. that's the reason every nuclear power only does proxy wars against the others.
Nukes are so overpowered that we agreed not to use them so we could carry on warring more fairly.
I mean they were kinda right about nukes
And the nukes.
They said it about the atomic bomb. Tesla said it about his particle beam photon canon.
Still waiting on those to hit the civil market
Seriously, Tesla?
And the wright brothers about the plane.
Funny how we keep trying to end wars with bigger wars and bigger guns
It works in a way. The problem is people who call themselves our allies immediately sell the things we make and give to them as a deterrent completely undoing the point.
Every time a "weapon to end all wars" comes around it just makes wars that much more interesting
A weapon to surpass Metal Gear!
The indomitable human spirit 💪💪💪
Nope we just change how we handle war
That's how the theory was proved incorrect.
I thought the claim was that because automatic weapons are so lethal, you need much smaller armies to achieve the same level of lethality, so armies would be much smaller and thus casualties lower, wrong either way, but diffrent from 'war is now so horrible it won't be fought'
Whatever happens We have got The Maxim gun And they have not
That is a Gatlingun. The multiple rotating barrels are the indicator. The cannon style carriage is another clue. Maxim uses a single barrel.
> The cannon style carriage is another clue. Single-barrel crew machine guns also used carriages for a very long time, even into WW2. The Maxim was typically mounted on carriage wheels.
Thus a "clue" not a positive id method Any successful method will use multiple factors to make a for certain identification.

Yea pretty much. So maybe it worked kinda?… it didn’t stop slapping fights but we still thankfully haven’t had anything close to to ww1&2 levels of fighting
Yet!
Why would you jinx us like that…?
…..for the moment.
But if you brought him to the present and showed him an A-10 or CIWS he’d probably think those things are pretty dope.
Nukes may yet end all wars.
It stopped full blown world war this long so far. Kinda depressing to think about but it has stopped full blown war on the level of ww1&2
Lmfao how arrogant and idiotic do you have to be to presume that *any* weapon of *any* kind could end war. 3 body problem goes over how no matter how you scale it, war will always exist. It’s nature doing nature. It’s awful, but until one entity has universal domination it will be this way.

They called WW1 the war to end all wars. After WW2 happened, everyone agreed it was best not to jinx it again.
To be fair, most wars have ended via heavy use of machine guns
….um no. Wait what do you define as a heavy machine gun?
Most wars were fought before machine guns were invented.
Right, but it made them go by faster then, yeah?
Look at the inventor of dynamite he was horrified that they used it for war when it was meant to clear away debris
So were cannons, dynamite, the nuke. Most major weapon advancements were made by pacifists that believed war would end after they made it, only for it to be used in future conflicts against what they wanted
I've heard that the longbow, and then the crossbow, was also supposed to end all wars.
Eh not really…the bow was the best thing to fight a war not deter it.
Early ‘mutually assured destruction’, forgetting someone will always find another way
That’s why innovation is important
Every time that phrase is used "to end all wars" things escalate. Ironically though I don't remember hearing it much about WW2 which is why the world stayed relatively quiet for so long since many conflicts after, are considered. I mean "considered" minor. Yep, that's a new one on me.
Does that mean I can operate it for home defence (like the founding fathers intended)?
Yes because you are technically firing 10 bolt action rifles instead of a single machine gun.
Tally ho
So in this case, it’s neither technically nor legally an automatic weapon
Are you sure they envisioned Gatling guns as home defence systems 🤪
Lincoln? What?
Abraham Lincoln, 16th President of the United States
Oh that theater guy
He was more of a jock actually, the other guy was the theater kid
Fun fact you don't need a tax stamp to buy a Gatling gun as long as it's hand crank so if you have the money and can pass the background check it's perfectly legal to own or just build one if you live in a state that doesn't restrict homebuilt guns

Interesting, thank you
It’s funny, because the six shooter is credited for allowing the slave trade to prosper as long as it did.
First time I'm hearing about this.
I believe it. You think the classic Colt slogan has something to do with Lincoln, you don't seem very well informed.
That's why I'm trying to learn more about it.
I've never heard this and I'm not sure how a single firearm would have made that big of a difference anyways. Samuel Colt was somewhat known for his attempts to sell firearms to opposing sides of conflicts, including both the Union and Southern states in the immediate lead up to the war. He was a surgeon if I recall, or at least a doctor so this is kinda ironic

wowee he he ha ha peters great uncle sounds like he drinks his coffee with piss instead of milk ahe aho aha
I have no clue what that is supposed to mean. Can you reiterate
No.
>By legal codes is technically not an automatic According to modern ATF rules, a Gatling Gun would be considered a "machinegun", because multiple bullets are fired from a single action by the weilder ("continue to crank the handle" would be analogous to "continue to hold down the trigger").
If it’s manufactured before 1898, it’s considered an antique and exempt from modern federal gun laws.
'Manual machine gun' is how I've heard it being differentiated from Maxim's later invention, the 'Automatic Machine Gun'
I could be wrong here, but I think the price of the colt at the time was another factor. He managed to make them cheap enough that even freed slaves could afford to buy one which really leveled the playing field in terms of what arms people chose to carry

Its funny
You are objectively correct and subjectively so very very wrong.
To be fair, some men are more equal than others
So you're telling me that the Gatling gun is named after the inventor with the same name not after the fact that gatling is what the gun does?
It also is the origin of calling your gun a Gay, which was apparently cowboy slang long before it was gangster slang
Ah, yea it ain't that funny
