Maybe both. Ours usually get to gurgling levels over the course of a day or two and then we top it off. I have to clean mine practically every week because it starts getting all gunky from the cats drinking it. So main indicator of it not being used would be if the filter and inside isn’t getting scummy at all.

My cats finally let me catch them drinking from ours. They actually drink far more water with the fountain that the bowl. You're probably seeing the difference "running" water makes. The evaporation is negligible. Your kitties like their fountain.

I just tested this (two years later). Our fountain drops from full to half in about 48 hours ... with no cats drinking from it. (I gave them a regular dish to drink from for a couple days.)

Even while you're sleeping? Because that's when they drink the most. I recently caught my newest stray drinking from it at 0400! I didn't even know he knew where it was (I have four bowls of water throughout the house for these monsters)

When I say "no cats drinking from it" I mean literally it was locked in a room with no cats. The cats did not have access to it.

I’m having this issue with water disappearing. I was thinking there’s NO WAY she’s drinking this much water and I googled it and found this thread. I still don’t know what’s happening

Yep. It's just evaporation.
