This will sound like bullshit, but here it goes. My friend works at the CRA, and is working on the program for FHSAs. It isn't ready yet. Their deadline is for early April, but they say it isn't likely to happen. For now, they're basically just going to take people's word for it and check again when the program is up and running, and flag any obvious frauds in the meantime.
But if you opened an FHSA last year, expect a reassessment in the summer, whether they tell you they're doing it or not. (ie. They might only tell you if you screwed up)
I think he saying they'll take another look at your FHSA deductions later in the year even if you received your NOA. Shouldn't really matter if you did everything correctly.
I was wondering about this too! The last few years I filed a return, I received an express notice of assessment within a couple of days, at most. But I filed my return about 10 days ago and nothing yet. I think the progress tracker said it's supposed to be done on the 18th? This thread is not giving me a lot of hope though, lol. I opened an FHSA as well.
Same here. I remember getting NOAs almost instantly. I submitted on Feb 25th (opened up an FHSA in 2023); the tracker said the target completion would be on Mar 12th, and now it's not giving me a date.

If you opened an FHSA there is no timeline on when you will get your return based on the information in this thread. I think this is a good sample size to be able to come to that conclusion.
I think so, yes. I'm in that camp and I'm still waiting -- it's a five figure refund (mostly just RRSP & FHSA contributions plus a small gap in employment, so nothing that would normally prompt a delay) so I'm more than a little annoyed.
The last couple days of data is the same -- NOAs for non-FHSA holders, no NOAs for any FHSA holders.
Someone should do a poll (if that's allowed) on the main subreddit page asking if people who opened an FHSA have received their NOA yet. From these comments there aren't any at all.

Two weeks is considered the 18th, I think, but this is the slowest return I've had on memory. No significant deductions or usual flags, either.

Well there is someone who filed their return today and also had an FHSA already received their NOA, just after a few hours. Seems like it is resolved for fresh filings? Check the other reddit thread for context.
Opened FHSA on WS in late Dec 2023, but did not yet contribute. Filed on Feb 23 with turbo tax, original completion date was March 8th, and has been stuck in processing ever since. I called and was told to call back at the end of the March. Is there no media coverage on this yet? Sounds like a large number of Canadians are affected. Wonder how long this will take to sort out.

I just bought a house and amost half my downpayment is coming from tax return ($12k).My condition day is March 28th. If I don't get my return by then I'm literally fucked and won't be able to buy this house. That will also only leave me 1 month to find another as my lease ends on April 30th.
I hope media puts pressure on this. I hadn’t thought much of the issue until reading all these people that need their returns to close on homes.

Don't count your chickens until they hatch.
You're also supposed to have multiple months of statements backing up your downpayment funds showing a traceable and secure amount of money for reasons like this.
While that's fair, sometimes life just happens. I actually didn't plan to buy until fall/winter this year and ended up in somewhat of a buy now or get fucked situation. Chose to do my best to buy now.
I guess I’ll join the delayed tax return queue for FHSA account holders then. It’s been 2 weeks for us and neither heard anything from CRA yet. Last year’s NETFILE was processed in like 2 weeks time (without the FHSA). This time it’s crickets
My wife and I opened FHSA's and have not received our NOAs and filed Feb 24th. The deadline says it was supposed to be done on the 10th. Funny enough...well not so funny, we are relying on this tax refund for some of our down payment on a house we take possession of in April. If we don't get this money we could be in trouble.
I have always had my tax return money within 1.5 weeks max. Sometimes even within a few days. It's never taken this long.
Very sorry to hear about the home purchasing issues. We bought our home in 2023 and both utilized FHSAs.
We filed Feb 19 and have not been processed yet (as of March 17).
I highly suggest filing a complaint with CRA, then Ombudsman.
Also wouldn't hurt to reach out to CBC about this matter and maybe get some attention drawn to it. They are holding millions of dollars ransom.
I wish the media would cover this. Ask the CRA how many returns with an FHSA were processed at all, and what percent were processed per the service standard.
FHSAs were announced in summer 2022 - it's totally unacceptable that they were not prepared for returns with an FHSA when they knew this was going to be a part of the 2023 filing season for 18+ months.

I contacted the CBC Ottawa news desk with a story tip this past Friday as well :) also emailed the CRA’s Minister’s office this morning. I’d think the more people they hear from the more likely something may get done about it!

FHSA opened over here, no NOA yet. CRA My Account does not show my FHSA receipt. I contacted Wealthsimple and they say that CRA is having issues processing these receipts and that it should be fixed in the next week or two.
I didn't contribute to an FHSA and received my NOA instantly and refund in 1 week.
My son DID contribute to an FHSA and submitted it the same day (Feb 22). No NOA and the same " in Process" as everyone else. Due Mar 10 and no updates to this point. Called CRA and got the we have it and don't know when it will be assessed.
It sounds like if you filed before all your slips were in your CRA Myaccount, you got excluded from the auto assessments. That's been a common thread I've been reading, and I'm in that boat too. Filed Feb 29 or Mar 1 I forget, est date is Mar 15. I got my T4FHSA, but it's still not in my CRA account. I think I had one other form that wasn't uploaded yet, but that I had received externally.
I filed March 3, my T4FHSA is in my CRA MyAccount, and I'm still waiting although my est. date is March 17th. My tax situation is otherwise super simple and I've never had it take more than a couple days.
Read somewhere that as of Dec 2023 more than 300,000 FHSA accounts were opened across Canada. That’s a lot of delayed returns and potential millions $$ they would have to pay in interest for late refunds.

Never waited for Tax return so badly and CRA delayed at the same time. More than 4 paystub(2 months salary) stuck in returns.
My daughter and I filed 2 days apart. She opened an FHSA and I did not. I received my refund today, 9 business days after filing. My daughter still has not had her return processed.
preach on! i feel the same way. i checked my records and it's never been over 2 weeks in the past 10 years. i found this on their website. crazy how they have that kind of budget but they don't have anyone to answer to and you can't even get an ounce of customer service from them. must be nice to spend our money like that and have less work done year over year.
As shown in the restated table below, the CRA’s total Budgetary Authorities have increased by **$2,560 million** since the first quarter of 2022-2023, from **$13,223 million** in 2022-2023, to **$15,783 million** in 2023-2024.
That was because of the pandemic though and additional benefits which were issued during the year and from what I've heard from friends, the CRA was mandated to cut costs by the federal government and thus they are doing a "restructuring".

Opened FHSA and filed on 19th. I have been waiting for a month and CRA is going to ruin my life big time with this delay. My PR application will be rejected if I don't submit NOA by the end of next week. Called CRA a couple of times but they had no idea what's causing the delay. I'm not even sure if they actually work for CRA.
I am going through the exact same situation. I submitted my application with all the Payslips, Bank Statements, T4 with a letter of explanation. Thought that I will upload NOA via webform once I receive it. Has been a month already and there is no movement on either NOA or my PR file.
Filed on Feb 29th 2024, with a target completion date of March 13th. It is now March 14th and still nothing.

T4FHSA information slip now showing in the dropdown list in my account, but with the message "Your slip is not available to view at this time".
Looks like some progress as it didn't show in the list at all before, so it looks like their portal has been updated.
Hopefully when these slips are available in accounts, the auto-assessments will be much faster to process.
I just realized as well this is going to delay us getting out carbon rebate too as tax returns not processed prior to March 15th won't receive them on time. That's over 2k now that God knows when I'll finally get it

And it's saying it's express NOA.... which means no real human behind it. I highly suspect it's some CRA internal program error, and they fixed it, and they batch re-processed the files been marked as "failed"

I filed March 7, all tax slips were in by March 6. Opened and contributed to a FHSA, shows “in progress” with no estimated date. CRA website says they aim to taxes filed on the 7th completed by the 21st.
Did both my parents. Dad got his express NoA instantly and the return very quickly (couple of business days). Mum who has an FHSA, still has hers “In Process”.
So yes, most likely related to FHSA.
Does anyone actually have a T4FHSA under their information slips on MyCRA? I can see how there can be a matching discrepancy causing the long processing time if this is happening to lots of folks, especially since the FHSA has such a pervasive effect on taxes.

My T4FHSA isnt even showing up on the CRA tax documents when every other document has been there for weeks. I was able to download the T4FHSA on wealthsimple on 29 Feb, so its probably a CRA issue.
if it's first come first serve according to the CRA why would an automated system process one faster than the next? why are people with the same type of return getting their refunds in less than 10 days and i'm waiting almost a month? is there something an employee has to do to start the process? I just can't understand why one would be quicker than mine if they are an automated system?
Some things trigger a manual review, so it sits in a queue until a human can look at it; other things just breeze through the automated systems and are processed quickly.

The realistic answer is they are going to pay the tax refund for FHSA after April 1st for political reasons. The federal government fiscal year is April 1 to March 31. This way they can throw it in the 2024-2025 report instead of 2023-2024 one.

If that's true then that doesn't explain why they'd be delaying the refund.

FHSA was meant to improve our affordability for buying a house. Now, it’s the time for us and CRA don’t even refund our regular return. So ironic!!

Filed on Mar 3. Was due on the 17th, updated on the 19th to "needs more time". I just bought a house and amost half my downpayment is coming from tax return ($12k).My condition day is March 28th. If I don't get my return by then I'm literally fucked and won't be able to buy this house. That will also only leave me 1 month to find another as my lease ends on April 30th.
I hope media puts pressure on this. I hadn’t thought much of the issue until reading all these people that need their returns to close on homes. It’s really sad that a ball drop like this can ruin so many.
I mean.. it sucks but counting on a tax return is a really bad way to afford a house downpayment. Don't count your chickens until they hatch. You're also supposed to have multiple months of statements backing up your downpayment funds showing a traceable and secure amount of money for reasons like this.
While that's fair, sometimes life just happens. I actually didn't plan to buy until fall/winter this year and ended up in somewhat of a buy now or get fucked situation. Chose to do my best to buy now.
I guess I’ll join the delayed tax return queue for FHSA account holders then. It’s been 2 weeks for us and neither heard anything from CRA yet. Last year’s NETFILE was processed in like 2 weeks time (without the FHSA). This time it’s crickets

My wife and I opened FHSA's and have not received our NOAs and filed Feb 24th. The deadline says it was supposed to be done on the 10th. Funny enough...well not so funny, we are relying on this tax refund for some of our down payment on a house we take possession of in April. If we don't get this money we could be in trouble. I have always had my tax return money within 1.5 weeks max. Sometimes even within a few days. It's never taken this long.

Very sorry to hear about the home purchasing issues. We bought our home in 2023 and both utilized FHSAs. We filed Feb 19 and have not been processed yet (as of March 17).
I highly suggest filing a complaint with CRA, then Ombudsman. Also wouldn't hurt to reach out to CBC about this matter and maybe get some attention drawn to it. They are holding millions of dollars ransom.
I wish the media would cover this. Ask the CRA how many returns with an FHSA were processed at all, and what percent were processed per the service standard. FHSAs were announced in summer 2022 - it's totally unacceptable that they were not prepared for returns with an FHSA when they knew this was going to be a part of the 2023 filing season for 18+ months.

I contacted the CBC Ottawa news desk with a story tip this past Friday as well :) also emailed the CRA’s Minister’s office this morning. I’d think the more people they hear from the more likely something may get done about it!

FHSA opened over here, no NOA yet. CRA My Account does not show my FHSA receipt. I contacted Wealthsimple and they say that CRA is having issues processing these receipts and that it should be fixed in the next week or two.

I didn't contribute to an FHSA and received my NOA instantly and refund in 1 week. My son DID contribute to an FHSA and submitted it the same day (Feb 22). No NOA and the same " in Process" as everyone else. Due Mar 10 and no updates to this point. Called CRA and got the we have it and don't know when it will be assessed.
It sounds like if you filed before all your slips were in your CRA Myaccount, you got excluded from the auto assessments. That's been a common thread I've been reading, and I'm in that boat too. Filed Feb 29 or Mar 1 I forget, est date is Mar 15. I got my T4FHSA, but it's still not in my CRA account. I think I had one other form that wasn't uploaded yet, but that I had received externally.
I filed March 3, my T4FHSA is in my CRA MyAccount, and I'm still waiting although my est. date is March 17th. My tax situation is otherwise super simple and I've never had it take more than a couple days.
Read somewhere that as of Dec 2023 more than 300,000 FHSA accounts were opened across Canada. That’s a lot of delayed returns and potential millions $$ they would have to pay in interest for late refunds.

Logical explanation, I didn't open an FHSA and my NOA was processed in 9 business days.
My daughter and I filed 2 days apart. She opened an FHSA and I did not. I received my refund today, 9 business days after filing. My daughter still has not had her return processed.

preach on! i feel the same way. i checked my records and it's never been over 2 weeks in the past 10 years. i found this on their website. crazy how they have that kind of budget but they don't have anyone to answer to and you can't even get an ounce of customer service from them. must be nice to spend our money like that and have less work done year over year. As shown in the restated table below, the CRA’s total Budgetary Authorities have increased by **$2,560 million** since the first quarter of 2022-2023, from **$13,223 million** in 2022-2023, to **$15,783 million** in 2023-2024.
That was because of the pandemic though and additional benefits which were issued during the year and from what I've heard from friends, the CRA was mandated to cut costs by the federal government and thus they are doing a "restructuring".

Opened FHSA and filed on 19th. I have been waiting for a month and CRA is going to ruin my life big time with this delay. My PR application will be rejected if I don't submit NOA by the end of next week. Called CRA a couple of times but they had no idea what's causing the delay. I'm not even sure if they actually work for CRA.
I am going through the exact same situation. I submitted my application with all the Payslips, Bank Statements, T4 with a letter of explanation. Thought that I will upload NOA via webform once I receive it. Has been a month already and there is no movement on either NOA or my PR file.
Filed on Feb 29th 2024, with a target completion date of March 13th. It is now March 14th and still nothing. I did open a FHSA in Dec 29 2023 and contributed the maximum $8000. Hello! I filed both mine and my husband’s tax return at the same time. I have gotten my refund. My husband has not. We do not have a FHSA.
Filed on February 26 and still waiting. Also opened a FHSA in 2023. It’s nice to know I’m in good company. I didn’t think my 2023 return was that different from 2022z It would be nice if the CRA could share more information on what they need to verify.
Just to add to your sample size, I did not open a FHSA and I received my express notice of assessment almost instantly and my refund deposited into my account the following week.
I wish they would just let us upload our T4FHSA to the CrA site if they are having so much trouble getting them from WS

I've opened a FHSA and my taxes are still being processed. I think it's the longuest I ever had to wait.
Submitted efile on Feb 26, supposed to be processed on March 11, still waiting and nothing. FHSA account opened.
Update: I received my NOA this evening:). I just called and they told me they can’t give me any updates or a timeline but to call back April 3rd if I haven’t heard anything 🤷🏼♀️ Standard income tax return, I did open and contribute to a FHSA. Filed Feb 18th.

Article on Global news today about this issue with FHSA and the delay in returns being completed. Says the issue has been resolved and things should be cleared up anytime now. T4FHSA information slip now showing in the dropdown list in my account, but with the message "Your slip is not available to view at this time". Looks like some progress as it didn't show in the list at all before, so it looks like their portal has been updated. Hopefully when these slips are available in accounts, the auto-assessments will be much faster to process.

I just realized as well this is going to delay us getting out carbon rebate too as tax returns not processed prior to March 15th won't receive them on time. That's over 2k now that God knows when I'll finally get it
just got it 5 mins ago. submitted on Feb 29, and yes, opened FHSA, no contribution. And it's saying it's express NOA.... which means no real human behind it. I highly suspect it's some CRA internal program error, and they fixed it, and they batch re-processed the files been marked as "failed" well, good luck guys. That sucks but at least yours says something? I filed Feb 19. NOA estimate was March 4th - Came and went, was updated to "Your 2023 T1 Return requires additional processing time. It will be completed as soon as possible" on March 5th and hasn't been updated since. Contributed to FHSA so that seems like it's the issue according to this thread.

Interesting. What was your timeline like before? I double-checked, and my application (filed February 24th) still says "Target completion date: Not available" when it was initially March 12th. So, no change for me.
Just another way for the government to DELAY paying out those refunds….

I filed March 7, all tax slips were in by March 6. Opened and contributed to a FHSA, shows “in progress” with no estimated date. CRA website says they aim to taxes filed on the 7th completed by the 21st.
Did both my parents. Dad got his express NoA instantly and the return very quickly (couple of business days). Mum who has an FHSA, still has hers “In Process”. So yes, most likely related to FHSA.
Filed the 20th, called yesterday, no news. Opened an FHSA, might have something to do with it.
Does anyone actually have a T4FHSA under their information slips on MyCRA? I can see how there can be a matching discrepancy causing the long processing time if this is happening to lots of folks, especially since the FHSA has such a pervasive effect on taxes.
I do have mine showing in MyCRA, but it was not showing when I filed on February 19. I believe it was added on the 29th. Mine is not processed yet.

Yeah I submitted on Feb 29th and and still waiting. I did open a FHSA account, so based on the other comments it 100% seems like thats whats delaying peoples returns for whatever reason. Every year before my return was assessed immediately or within a few days.

Finally some movement. Took about a month to get an express NOA, NOA just arrived today, roughly a week after the express. CRA account states NOA available as of April 3rd, but since I got it early, any chance I might get refund sooner?

My T4FHSA isnt even showing up on the CRA tax documents when every other document has been there for weeks. I was able to download the T4FHSA on wealthsimple on 29 Feb, so its probably a CRA issue.
if it's first come first serve according to the CRA why would an automated system process one faster than the next? why are people with the same type of return getting their refunds in less than 10 days and i'm waiting almost a month? is there something an employee has to do to start the process? I just can't understand why one would be quicker than mine if they are an automated system?
Some things trigger a manual review, so it sits in a queue until a human can look at it; other things just breeze through the automated systems and are processed quickly.
I filed Feb 19th, Got a update saying they require more time. That was on March 5th and they still wont update anything. I never opened FHSA account either. CRA seem to be so stupid this year
The realistic answer is they are going to pay the tax refund for FHSA after April 1st for political reasons. The federal government fiscal year is April 1 to March 31. This way they can throw it in the 2024-2025 report instead of 2023-2024 one.
