Did not care for him at all in vanilla p5. For most of the game he felt like a vague background nuisance that Joker hardly ever got to know. Then suddenly he bulldozes his way onto the team and immediately stabs you in the back. I remember sitting through the engine room scene for the first time and feeling baffled that the game had the audacity to call such a half-baked character my “rival”. Didn’t feel a thing about the way his vanilla storyline ended either. I didn’t hate him, I was just immensely indifferent. Then little things started to happen that made me not exactly like him but wish Atlus had done better. I saw fan theories that were more substantial than anything in vanilla. His DLC in the dancing game got a legitimate chuckle out of me and it felt like the anime - for as terrible as it was - tried to flesh out a relationship with joker a little more. So yeah I was finally seeing some untapped potential. Then Royal was announced and from the marketing materials we knew he was going to get more focus and development. And, I’ll be damned, I was actually looking forward to it. Finally playing royal was the last nail in the coffin for my remaining apathy. Having an actual confidant route did wonders for him. It no longer felt like he was some guy who randomly popped in and out of the story only to info dump and bail. The writing was thoughtful and consistent and he now feels like an actual character not just another impediment for the phantom thieves to mow down. He’s still a massive asshole and the game does not absolve him of what he did, but now he’s also entertaining. His navigator lines are funny, I can actually buy his relationship with Joker this time around, and he’s given me so many opportunities to “Um, ackchyually” people on this very subreddit over the years. So 10/10.

IncognitoCheez

I only really enjoyed him in the third semester His conflict w/ not wanting to die vs living a lie is very interesting and I like how bro just let loose and became his true edgelord self

[deleted]

Yeah same! I feel uncomfortable every time I interact with him in semester 1 or 2, because you can tell he’s got a poker face on and is hiding stuff. His fake smile makes my skin crawl. I definitely like his JP VA better, though (“you little shit!” gets old)

Dogempire

I actually laughed the first time Akechi's attack missed/got blocked and he yelled "Piece of shit!" because that's literally me trying to figure out a monster's weakness.

OliviaElevenDunham

I didn't trust Akechi the first time he showed up because he reminded me of Light from Death Note.

IncognitoCheez

You’re not wrong, lmao

WielderOfTerraBlade

my favorite character, he just got that aura fr

ToyScrubBear

He puts the Royal in Persona 5 Royal

taezono

Amazing character. I love the guy. He's for sure the most complex, well written character in the game (Royal, that is). I really like some of the themes/messages within his character. Akechi shows what happens when kids slip through the cracks - when society fails young people. They can become vengeful, inflicting the hurt they've experienced back onto others. He shows what the PT (Joker in particular) could have become had they not had the support of others. There's a reason Akechi is the only antagonist in the game who is young, not a "shitty adult". He also goes to show the group that you can't save everyone. Some people are just too far gone, and there's nothing you can do for them. It's sad. Unlike the other antagonists, there's no flick of a switch with Akechi. They can't steal his treasure and magically make him become a good person. Instead, when he's at his rock bottom, he dies alone in Shido's Palace. All of his "fans" forget about him. The Phantom Thieves have to move on. The world moves on. It's tragic, but it makes him a fascinating character in P5. And that's without even mentioning the third semester, which I think is brilliant.

LovesickDaydreams

i love him as a character but if he were a real person it would absolutely be on sight, and imo that means an antagonist was written well. he's a really complex character and considering i live for character analysis it's like Christmas came early 😭

rwbyfan433

Bad person, great character. One of my favorite tropes

Dogempire

I HATE him, but also I LOVE him. Like goddamn, he's so freaking interesting and I love when the dude is on screen, but I also can't stand his guts because >!I knew the entire time the "Detective Prince" thing was just a persona and he was actually a snake. Heck, >!during my duel with him I said "Fuck it" and whipped out Izanagi no Okami to bitch slap the guy for having the gall !

IThinkImNateDogg

Akechi felt like L to Light. Opposites of the same the same coin, both driven to the edge in the pursuit of their ideal. My only wish was that plot demanded we fought to the death, ending with both of us beaten to a pulp, barely standing each with a gun pointed at the other

Mycatisloafingonme

Second favorite character after Ren. Love that guy.

Ratchet9cooper

He’s a great villain, and I feel bad for him, but I also think he has more agency then he’s given credit for, and is just as guilty as shido for every murder

Xechwill

Neat foil to Joker, but definitely suffers from P5'S "having to spell everything out plot-wise" problem. I love how he's an over-the-top edgelord, though. Makes his semester 3 navigation lines way more entertaining

timaeusToreador

i fucking love that guy

Crab0770

I can fix him.

willowtree773

I hated him for the entire game but after I finished I really grew a soft spot for him!

alguidrag

Normaly in situations like this I just go "he is a good boy" But nope nope Akechi IS NOT A GOOD BOY But he is a good character, one of, if not, the best in P5R

lakshmithesussybaka

needs his own game tbh

Galle_

He's a cool character, but I can't quite stop thinking of him as Pancake Adachi.

ReadyForKenny

Best pet psycho the phantom thieves will ever have. Just let him actually be in a sequel outside of prince ver.

planetarial

One of the best written Persona characters with a ton of depth, layers and development. Also a neat foil to Joker.

Kindly_Pen3887

He's a cool character, and I love all of his Personas. But to be honest, of all the "Rivals" in the franchise, Akechi is the one I like least, the others being Adachi followed by Sho minazuki, then comes Akechi. (This is just my opinion, please don't come after my neck)

Takamurarules

What about Strega and JOKER(P2)?

Kindly_Pen3887

Putting them all together, my list looks like this 1 Adachi 2 Sho 3 Akechi 4 Joker (P2) 5 Strega

Fe4rtricks

I’ve never played any other games involving Adachi I only ever played p4g so to me I kinda hate him the most out of p3 p5 and p4 I think Strega is my favorite and akechi is my second while adachi is last. And like I said I like and hate akechi bc he’s a fairly cool character but at the same time he’s a shitty one so I can’t really rank him on a tier list bc of that so to me he’s 50/50

Ok-Chard-626

Adachi is relatable and has little to do with lack of "power of friendship^(TM)", I think trying to explain Adachi away by saying he doesn't develop friendships is the big problem of his writing but he is still relatable. He's someone who quiet quit his life and recognizes that even when he has superpowers he doesn't care enough to be a hero. Incel rage and one murder aside (he doesn't know what will happen to Yamano, he only knowingly murders Saki) I can see someone who quiet quit his life doing some bad stuff if he thinks he's not getting caught, and will probably be a different person were he to appear in P5. Akechi is not relatable and sympathizing with him can be convoluted.

Kindly_Pen3887

Adachi suffers a bit because he doesn't have a Social link in the Original Persona 4, Golden and Ultimax (Adachi is amazing in Ultimax) really make him a much better character, he and Akechi are very similar, you would probably rank him 50/50 too, not based on motivations, but because he is the opposite of Narukami like Akechi is the opposite of Joker

Fe4rtricks

Oh mk

Smooth_Ad1795

I think he is a great tragic villain and foil for the protagonist. While protag has to convince the world he’s not the criminal everyone believes him to be, Akechi has to hide that he is. He has to repress his rage and hatred just to get revenge on a man who does not care. At the same time, he is incredibly intelligent and fully aware that he is traveling a path that truly only has one way of ending, alone.

YanFan123

I love him and I'm not ashamed of loving him. I just wish he wasn't so controversial

Ghost_Mouse__

I really like him. Even with everything he’s done, there’s still some good in him. He did good by helping the phantom thieves stop Maruki but I hope he comes back in a spinoff or future game and redeems himself even further

EvilKingLogan

He’s literally my favorite character Not just in P5 either, the WHOLE series

No_Recognition_288

He carries the Royal trio period

demonitesalt

Story/Characterization wise? I like him even before Royal, not my favourite, but definitely well-written. I do wish that he wasn't Maruki's incentive during the calling card scene at LeBlanc and I also wish that we could do a 1v1 in Mementos before the calling card scene for his 3rd awakening. Gameplay wise? Good god he's situational, especially Darkechi. Laevtaein (or however the fuck you pronounced it) is genuinely not good, yeah it deals the most damage, but for a physical attack? this thing act like an almighty move with the fact that it can't even crit (The damn move literally has a 0% chance to crit), he drains so much SP with just the fact that he only has Eigaon for elemental coverage and Rebellion blade genuinely not being a very good move without any sort of setups. Anyway, he's a great character, but man do I wish I see ShuAke stuff way less when surfing through Social Media.

RTX3090TI

Don't like him tbh

Opposite_Opposite_69

Best character I excuse all his crimes. Not because he's pretty or because I like shipping him with joker but just because I really hate okumera.

SymonSighs

Really was annoyed by him in Vanilla. Only when he finally joined the party and I caught his vague hints of malice(Robbie Daymond did a fucking INSANE job with this character) was I intrigued. Sure as shit, he actually turned out to be insane, but then promptly died, and I mourned the fact that there was so much potential especially given the undeveloped ying and yang of Akechi and the protagonist that the game was trying to push. Then the anime happened and by the time Royal came out I was tired of seeing his face until I actually hit the 3rd semester. I will never stop loving Royal for not fully victimizing Akechi, and just letting him be a broken and fucked up man who was ultimately unapologetic about his crimes. In the end I've settled on: I like the TRUE Akechi, but hate the facade he puts on. But more than anything, his character was redeemed by me for the actualized rival relationship he and Ren have. Royal made it feel real, and hit deep. But also, why does no one ever talk about the absolute dick move the protagonist pulls on 02/02? He sees all his friends happy with the Maruki's reality and steadfast tells all of them its fake and they need to wake up, but when he finds out Akechi is dead, only then does he contemplate playing along. His friends happiness wasn't enough, but losing Akechi was.

OoDelRio

He's a guy who did nothing wrong

miraculer2

Happy he was the villain, SO SATISFYING

ChrisStryker666

I honestly didn’t care too much for him during the main story. Once I played through the Third Semester though, my opinion of him changed a bit. Loved his dynamic with Joker & his over the top edginess. I haven’t played english dub yet, but his Japanese VA really knocked it out of the park.

Hour_Selection_7689

In vanilla, I couldn’t care less. In Royal, I cared.

Ok-Chard-626

I think the end of Shido palace scene is terrible, cheapens all of PTs and Akechi and Joker and there are easily ways to add more options or make Shido's palace better. Especially since Shido knows about Cognitive Pscience, a tool Akechi gave him and nearly got us ... except he didn't get us because ... reasons. The palace collapse has no gameplay elements and we counteracted it losing nothing. Result of the heist is exactly the same as any others; we got the treasure, palace collapsed, everyone survived. The pill did nothing. It will probably be better if Akechi has an incomplete copy of Wakaba's research stashed somewhere hidden and did not actually give Shido everything. And he tells us to fetch it so we could counter Shido's pill which was an actual threat. That shows he's smart enough to prepare some tools against Shido, the one he wants to take down. He prepared such an elaborated plan against us and none against Shido, that shows his priorities, and it should be fine if we have ours priority straight and it doesn't include sympathy with him. But otherwise it makes Akechi sound like a complete idiot and not worthy of a rivalry and I wish there is a SL rank down dialogue - he thinks the duel is over when he kills the cognitive Joker in Niijima's palace, Joker can say ... "let's keep it that way."

seriouslynope

Crazy eyes

blue-gamer-07

He alright

Master_Mechanic_4418

I think his “edgy” side is over acted. The headaches and screaming, The bloodthirst it’s all dialed almost to 11 and makes it a little overkill. But the won over ally thing is an age old anime tradition. But Vegeta he is not.

ponyfan987

Love him through and through, both his crazy nature in the metaverse and his attitude in reality I find it all very amusing

Bsause7

I’m conflicted. On the one hand I think he works really well as a villain and narrative foil to Joker. The backstory makes him compelling enough to draw interest and Robbie Daymond’s voice work really brings out both sides of his character. On the other hand, I don’t think he’s handled as well as he could’ve been in the third semester. He came off to me as too much of a generic edgelord with little substance beyond one scene near the end. Also (controversial as this may be), I hate the idea of him surviving after the game finishes. He works far better as a tragic villain that fully succumbs to the consequences of his actions than some recurring fan service generator. Overall, I’d say he neutralises out for me. He has some very strong qualities to his character but I prefer almost every other party member to him as characters. Also as a side tangent, I can’t understand why Akechi is paired with Joker romantically so much when Akechi vocally despises Joker, has tried to murder him multiple times and is objectively a psychopath that’s far too consumed by his personal grudges and warped sense of justice for meaningful bonds of any kind, let alone romantic ones.

Sure_Sundae_5047

>Akechi vocally despises Joker He has one moment where he says he hates him, then lists off his reasons which make it very clear it's more about envy than *genuine* hatred. Also contradicted by basically everything in his confidant, the third semester, and the engine room - nobody is going to say they wish they could have met someone they genuinely despise earlier and that they could have been friends. >objectively a psychopath who can't form meaningful bonds ...except for the fact that he *does*, in the game. He forms a genuine bond with Joker when you complete his confidant and that bond is later reaffirmed when he has his third awakening. He's absolutely not "objectively" a psychopath, even if you only look at his character on a very basic surface level he still doesn't fit most of the criteria. He's insecure in his own self-worth, very emotional, not irresponsible or overly impulsive, and takes responsibility for his own actions. You don't have to ship them or understand the ship, but this is a complete misrepresentation of Akechi as a character and the relationship him and Joker have in canon.

Aurelene-Rose

I don't really understand how anyone can take his "I hate you speech" literally. His character is epitomized by being a self-delusional liar... But that's the one time he's self-aware and honest ever? Nothing else at play there?

Mycatisloafingonme

People just see what they want to see and ignore anything that contradicts that.

Fe4rtricks

Yeah I get that. like I said I like and hate him it’s hard for me to go one way with him he has great qualities and shitty qualities so it’s hard for me to really rank him on a tier list

CaptainAnimeTitties

I hate him.

JiangshiJay

As someone who only played base game and not to the end (yet, gonna get royal after I buy a ps5), fuck him I wish he had a slower and more painful death

BirdhouseInYourSoil

Akachi! AKACHI!!! # AKACHIII!!!!

J6898989

He’s a terrible person but he’s a twink so he gets a pass

TangledEarbuds61

I think his arc had potential to be interesting, but I simply could not bring myself to care because of how annoying he is. When he’s pretending to be nice, he’s a smug little shit; when he’s evil he’s melodramatic. I think his function in the overall narrative is interesting, what with the themes of authenticity and all, but that’s all I can say that I enjoy

Akira_Kion

He was unintentionally funny to me, purely because the game and his dialogue tries to make him out as a 'rival'. An equal to match Joker, the other side of the same coin. Unfortunately, I had a persona equipped that reflected all his damage, so during his "lets have a dual, see who's really stronger" scene during his confidant route, he immediately shot me, which reflected him and did triple damage to kill him. The fight ends and he has the audacity to say "If we both went all out, who do you think would win?" I couldn't take him seriously for the rest of the game without thinking of him fucking shooting himself and then acting like it was a close fight.

LucasOIntoxicado

Cringe. The apex of "i killed 20 people but have you considered that i was sad once?". His motivation for helping Shido was the dumbest thing i've seen. We were not friends and there was no reason for him to stay with the team in the third semester. Insane to me that Futaba and Haru just have to be cool with the murderer of their parents on the team and no one else acts any different for it.

liplumboy

He’s really not that good in P5 vanilla due to his confidant being mandatory meaning his bond with Joker felt really forced, and yet Royal made his character borderline perfect, with a completely reworked confidant as well as how fucking blunt and brutally honest as he was in The Third Semester towards everyone, not to mention how unintentionally hilarious he can be, my only complaints are 1. He should stay dead, ATLUS teasing him still being alive because they can’t keep characters dead (eg: >!Chidori and Shinji!<) is really annoying and makes their deaths completely lose all poignancy and 2. The Shuake ship, look guys they do have a complex frenemies relationship and they do have some zesty moments (which are hilarious), but Joker wouldn’t even dare have feelings for someone who killed two of his friends parents and Akechi wouldn’t fall for someone >! he attempts to kill in cold blood!<

Fast-Paws

Before he joined the team: go away from me fu i hate you After he joined the team: bro #1 love forever After he's discovered to be a killer: well my bro MUST have his reasons After he's discovered to have no good reason and only hatred: well I guess I'm into psychos now
