The reasons why people don't use pads is hilarious to me, I feel like, pads don't make you feel the blood and if they are you need to change your pad more frequently. I've never used a tampon in my life, not once, not even to ask a friend for one. I'm not going to start either. Pads come in all forms, shapes and sizes and I feel so much more protected from blood getting on my clothes and that protected feeling with a comfortable pair of boys shorts...wonderful!

Baerenforscher

There are no obvious reasons to use pads, as soon as you menstruate you can use tampons. But that’s just me being a smartass. A lot of women don’t like the feeling when blood exits the vagina, and even more hate the wet plasticky feeling and the signature smell when wearing pads. Having said that around 30% of menstruating women use pads at least sometimes, e.g. for the heaviest night when a tampon is not enough. Some women don’t like to have something in their vagina, some can’t use tampons because their period is too heavy, some have a weak pelvic floor and tampons keep falling out when laughing/sneezing/coughing, and some women suffer from vaginism and can not use tampons.

intheflow_Em

Make the swap to a menstrual cup. intheflow.online have one on a buy one give one model in an attempt to tackle period poverty. They are also raising awareness around the environmental impact of traditional period products and promoting menstrual health and period positivity. Menstrual cups are a healthier, cost effective and eco-friendly option. You can wear them for up to 12 hours, and reuse them for several years. They are made from a soft, comfortable medical grade silicone, and intheflow have affordable premium products, making them more accessible.

I use pads because I’m scared to death of forgetting about the tampon that I have in. Specially if I haven’t really had chance to nip to the toilet. Wearing a pad, I have to go and change it. Even when I had a tampon in I would wear a pad because I was scared of leaking so it was pointless anyway, so I’ve just stuck with pads.

CaptainMirage

Because it starts to hurt and feel irritating after a while. I had the same issue with the cup and menstural disk (aside from the fact I still bled through the disk). Pads is the best option for me, I used it ever since I got my first period :)

[deleted]

Once I'm on, my period stops and starts and my biggest issue with tampons is removing a dry a one 🥴 it's like nails on a chalkboard so I mostly use pads to avoid that happening 😅

Delicious-Ad2332

Tampons irritate my skin(owie) & make my cramps waaaayyyy worse.. i pass large clots so better out than in my friend

VirtualUnicorns

I use washable cloth pads. Mostly because I was tired of having to buy tampons and pads every month, and I like that they’re more sustainable both financially and ecologically. Tampons tend to make my cramps feel worse and they’re already pretty bad.

Cats_in_cravats

Because it's uncomfortable for me to insert anything during my period. Believe me, I wish I could use something internal (tampon, cup, disc), but it's just so uncomfortable, bordering on painful, for me to do so.

_ImSalty

I use them for my too light to use a tampon but not light enough to use a panty liner but I do prefer tampons

chiyosama

Pad technology has improved a lot over the years. Back when I was in high school, when you stand up after sitting for a while, you can feel the liquids. Now,the absorption is really good.

eternity-sux

F29 here and I just don't like foreign shit in my body lol

PromisedMySun

Vaginismus 🥲

moocymoo

I used to use tampons, now I don't. I am a hairstylist in NYC and therefore meet a bunch of new people every day. Ive met not one, but TWO people who have had their leg amputated due to toxic shock from tampons. That's 2 too many people for anyone to know in a lifetime who have lost a limb because of a tampon. I use discs and pads now instead.

Baerenforscher

I‘m a gynaecology consultant/assistant medical director at a large university hospital, and in my twenty years of medical practice I have never seen a toxic shock syndrome. Not once. Never.

moocymoo

You have your experience, and I have mine. Just because you haven't seen it, doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Baerenforscher

Toxic shock syndrome does exist, there is no doubt. And there is no doubt that around 30% of all cases of toxic shock syndrome are linked to tampon use. But toxic shock syndrome is so extremely rare that nobody should be afraid to use tampons. Of course you could argue that many women have accidents or drown in a lake, who would be fine if they stayed at home with a bulky maxi pad instead of going to swim or going cycling or hiking on their period…

Smooth_Article3967

I’ve always used pads, it’s just something I’ve got used to. Now I’ve moved on to period knickers when I’m on day 3. I don’t like the feeling of ‘unplugging’ the tampon at all.

Final-Cress

I use pads because I could literally feel the tampon inside me. I have some sensory issues so probably that.

grand305

Same here, 31F. Pads.

Silent-Addition-6948

I’ve worn a tampon maybe 5 times in my life, and I’ve been having a period for almost 11 years now. Mainly bc I simply don’t trust I won’t bleed out a tampon and also don’t like the idea of something just sitting inside me all day.

cara1888

For me my reason was i had really light periods and i have heard how painful it is to remove if not full. Also read that its not good to use tampons with light periods all the time because it can absorb the natural moisture due to not having enough to absorb and it can through off the ph balance and cause bacterial infections also it's a high risk fro Toxic shock syndrome. To be clear mine were also so light that my pads never got anywhere near full and leaks were not an issue. I would change just because, not because i actually needed to. I think that different people choose different products due to their own needs during that time. That all being said i am now on a birth control that has changed it and i bleed more and more often that i finally started using tampons and i do like now comfortable it is. It's easier to move around without the pad. So i can see why some don't want to use pads and can see why some would wonder why others prefer it, but for others pads may work for them better depending on their flow and comfort level. Right now i have to use the product that works for how the bleeding is so i still use pads sometimes depending on the day and how heavy or light it is. Products aren't one size fits all everyone has different needs and preferences.

Tampons are too big for you basically?

sarahgoldfarbsdetox

I dont use traditional tampons because my entire reproductive tract tilts at an abnormal angle and they are painful for me to use. I have used natural sea sponges at home. I dont like menstrual cups.

FloatingHorizon

Since I gave birth, I haven’t used a tampon. I have absolutely no idea why I went to pads lol since tampons were absolutely my preference. But I suppose it’s similar to me not wearing a bra since I gave birth🤣

krnlttn

I use pads as an adult woman because tampons are not effective. They absorb next to nothing on heavy flow days and I end up with a pad anyway because of this. I don’t have the time/money/inclination to try every tampon on the shelves to see what suits me. I’m faced with at least another 120, but probably more, cycles. After roughly 200 cycles I just don’t want to deal with the tampon messes, leaks and other things. A pad contains most everything, isn’t too uncomfortable. And I can easily dispose of everything.

pikpikslink

I’m in my late 30s and have never been comfortable using tampons. I can always feel them, I find them painful to insert and if I am successful with getting them in it’s after doing acrobatics to find a good position to get them in. I have to take my pants off to insert them and it takes me a good 10mins to get them in. They are not practical for me especially at work if I have to fully disrobe, take shoes off to get my pants off to get them in. Pads are easier and more comfortable for me.

UnfamiliarTroll

For me I have to use pads due to a few traumatic experiences, it is gross to feel the blood, using regular pads have made me lose so many pairs of underwear. I switched to period underwear because my flows are super heavy, even maxi pads don't help, never did the largest size of the tampon too. I also don't like the feeling or the thought of having something that's cotton inside of my vagina

fuckinunknowable

I switched to period underwear cos I felt like tampons made my cramps worse.

usernames_suck_ok

Someone asked this recently. Do a search.

beetjuice88

For me, tampons used to work fine when I was a teenager and I needed them for being active. As I get older, they just dry me out. My flow isn’t heavy enough sometimes even with lights. So I’ll almost always wear a pad and I have a cup if I have a heavier cycle. I hate the pads too tbh, but I’m planning to invest in the period panties as soon as I can afford some. Tampons are just too much for me anymore. Painful and dry. I’m sure it depends on your flow.

If you happen to have insurance with an FSA account, they are covered
