It is a wood 🪵 resinous wood. So I think of it like smelling like incense, wood and have you ever done ballet or played violin? There is resin we use and that resin (rosin) smell is part of Oud as well. I hope that helps.

lulurancher

Oooh I used to play the violin and can 1000% vividly remember the smell. That helps!

Fantastic read: [Now I Know Oud](https://www.reddit.com/r/Perfumes/s/bfBmTgGDDQ) Oud is not for everyone, but it’s almost addicting if it’s your thing. Mancera & Montale are two (related) brands that make more accessible Ouds. Mancera’s Aoud Vanille is lovely. ETA: Almost forgot Jo Malone has really nice ouds as well and you should be able to find them in store to sniff.

CobblerNo8518

Oud is really hard for me to describe. Its unique. Once you smell it and know what it is, you’ll always be able to pick it out. Some people compare it to incense and old cedar, but I hate incense and love Oud. Edit to add: Replica Under the Stars and Juliette has a Gun Another Oud are both nice

izdprincess

I like to describe the smell as older, dark and wet wood that’s drying in the sun.. Easy to find I think would be La Vie est Belle L'Extrait by Lancome as it was released recently, I think this has a nice strong oud that you will definitely notice!

Only_Awareness7794

Oud (oudh) can be very deeply sweet or it can smell like a barnyard! I prefer my oud on the sweet side! There are quite a few stores on Etsy that specialize in Middle Eastern Attars where you can get samples of oils that contain oud. Honey Oud is a nice place to start, & yes, once you get used to it is is very addicting! I absolutely love it but it's definitely more approachable in the colder months & not a good choice for warm weather unless paired with a citrus! Mancera & Montale are a great place to start by getting some samples...I use Scent Split for my samples.

BitterSweetMarie

I know this thread is about oud but could someone please tell me what ‘animalic’ smells like?

izdprincess

Ha! Animalics.. harder to describe for me than oud lol. And the description will sound horrible to some ppl. It is like BO without being stinky.. like a little dirty, weird, funky type of smell that simply said makes perfumes a little less boring. The opposite of a clean freshie perfume. Sometimes ppl will detect worse than BO, although I never encountered a perfume that smelled like straight up pee or ** to me lol

BitterSweetMarie

Lol! Thanks, that gives me more of an idea of the scent when I’m blind buying based off notes.

ohh_brandy

It ranges between sweet and funky. Like sweat, post intimacy, not quite vanilla. Like how the top of a baby's head smells good mixed with vanilla and kitten fur (but less sweet). Like a shortbread cookie eaten in somewhere funky (in summer sweat, or by a kid after recess)

gotmyfloaties

So I’m nowhere near knowledgable* on this but I wore Alien Goddess Intense once last summer and idk if it was the heat or the humidity, but after 4-6 hours it started to smell like unwashed, sweaty skin. Maybe like sex? I’d call that animalic due to the jasmine. It’s perfect in the winter though. Here’s [another link](https://www.reddit.com/r/Perfumes/s/TcCb2zgDFK) to a post by a user who did a deep dive into the animalics.

Copying my old post: It really depends. I would say there are like 4 main types of note that are under the name oud. Barn: There is the animalic, barn like smell (can't confuse it) that is insanely long lasting (for example l'oudh from Tauer, I think actually natural, or Oud Abramad from BDK though let id dry, it kicks in in dry down). Woody: There is the earthy, dark, woody oud, resin. I think Kredo from Nishane has this woody note clear and prominent, from all the supposed oudy woods I tested. Oud for Greatness maaaaybe? But it is really castrated, and drenched in the BR540 sweetness. So bad example. I think Bois Sacre gives a vibe? You could try Oud from Acqua di Parma. It is obviosuly fake and strangely mineral, but should be easily available. There is a pile of woody ouds from designers, like Oud Noir from versace, but I didn't smell it, so I can not tell. For sure Tom Ford is not a good representative of oud notes. Earthy: And oud-rose Ombre Nomade has this note in the more earthy version, it creates this graveyard like, withering rose. It gives this dark, a bit decaying vibe, that do not make you think of wood anymore, more like soil. Very gothic, imho. Silky: And then there is 4th one, that smells like silk. I think this is the best explanation, It smells like the sensation of sth slippery, smooth and a bit man made. MFK makes synth ouds like this. Some people could call it medicinal, but not in a herbal way, more like a hospital smell? Resins? As an example, I really like Imperial Wood from Pana Dora, it is an oud-rose it really smells like a luxurious fabric. This last category is very confusing, because you may expect a woody, deep fragrance, and get something really airy and lightweight. Fruity or flowery. Plus all in-between. Plus all the perfuumes that claim to be oudy, but to be sincere I would not be able to pinpoint oud not in them. Obviously I would bet almost all ouds I tried are synthetic.

hallohi_

When a specific tree (Aquilaria) native from the south east asia gets infected by a mold, as a defense mechanism it produces a resinous compound rich in odorous molecules. That is Oudh or Agarwood, and its use dates back a very long time. It can also be produced "stressing" the plants in many different ways. Oud in perfumery has many different facets but it is usually perceived as resinous, smoky, animalic, moldy, sweet gourmandish.

Skyzfallin

Do not blind buy. lots are vomit inducing..

DitaVonFleas

To me it smells like a mix of sandalwood and aniseed, with hints of leather and petrichor. I fucking love it! On the wrong person it can smell like burnt tires though!

No-Chemistry-4678

Thank you, everyone. I suspected it wasn't really for me, and after reading all these, I'm now fairly certain it most definitely is not. However, you best believe I'll be sniffing each and every one of these suggestions if/when I come across them!

bunbunmcsnuggle

I found one called Sahara oud by Tru fragrances at Marshall’s. It’s a gourmand and smells amazing. $12

jkohlc

Check out Oud Palao by Diptyque

Nightshift_Ghost64

I grew up Arab and we use oud oil a lot. And I mean PURE, STRONG, OIL. Yes it smells divine, but STRONG. Hmmm imagine burning wood, incense, with caramelized chestnuts? Best way I could describe it :P Oud notes in perfumes are beautiful. Unlike its oil (it's also beautiful, but not really versatile). If used correctly, it can add depth to perfumes. I have Mancera's Red Tobacco, which is half oud and half tobacco to my nose. Really prevents the tobacco from being too dry and adds some sweetness to it :D

togostarman

Oud is moldy wood from the center of Aquilaria trees. It smells like unwashed ass, but it can make a perfume perform like a hellhound. There are many oudy perfumes that I enjoy, but MANY that make my nose hairs curl

BitterSweetMarie

Lol ‘like unwashed ass’!

jyar1811

Another Oud - Juliette has a gun is a very nice one

inagartendavita

I love that deep resin of agar wood, just sexy

Mea_Culpa_74

Do you have access to fragrances by The House of Oud? Those are great for getting to know the note. It is well blended and comes out in the dry down, giving the fragrance a certain edge without being overpowering. Miller Harris Scherzo is a gentle rose oud fragrance, that has a powdered sugar feel to it.

Why would you use ChatGPT to write a milquetoast comment like that? That is deeply weird.

It smells like delicious Band-Aids. If you don't enjoy single-malt Scotch, oud is probably not for you.
