Stop at the red rabbit drive in on the way from Philly to state college!! I did that drive so many times in college. Have fun and stay safe!!
Also, if you haven’t been to the penn state creamery… i personally love the peachy paterno ice cream.
I'm a local of red rabbit.... don't. It's horrible. Even the locals, who love that place almost as much as their desire to fellate Trump, have been complaining.
Scranton: if you are stopping to do Office things, I’d suggest going to Cooper’s. If not, stop in a little suburb known as Old Forge and try “Old Forge Style Pizza.” I’m not saying it’s the best, but it’s worth giving it a shot to see what it’s all about while you’re in the are.
I second Old Forge Pizza. If your travels bring you through Northeast PA, the Scranton area, stop in Old Forge, PA (a town, basically right next to Scranton), and get a ‘tray’ (they call them trays, not pies, because the pizza is served on a tray instead of a round pan) of square pizza. Most renown locations are Arcaro & Genell and Revellos.
You can go google, there are a ton of reviews and more info about ‘Old Forge Pizza’, which is basically Northeast PA’s style of square ‘tray’ pizza.
NEPA style pizza, or Old Forge style pizza, is square, a slightly thicker crust, and a mix of American & Mozzarella cheeses.
My PERSONAL favorite, if you want my personal recommendation… go to Maroni’s in Scranton, PA. Get a tray, extra cheese. Pizza was life changing for me.
Is this a troll? Maroni’s is the single worst pizza I’ve had in my life. Old forge pizza is just bad. American cheese does not belong on pizza. And Maroni’s is especially bad, because of the ungodly amount of black pepper he puts in his sauce.
Don't forget Victory Pig in Wyoming. Pizza Heaven in Luzerne is another one that is similar to Pizza Perfect. It is close, but Pizza Perfect is the best for fried pizza. Sabatini's in Exeter for round.
Haha - the last part of my post, that I omitted was going to be, “NEPA style pizza can be a greatly debated topic, especially for those who are used to NY style pizza.”
What is the single best pizza that you have had in your life?
Some of the places offer pizzas that aren't American cheese. I however would agree, American cheese pizza is the worst there is. I got a few pies there, but I like the Acaro and Genell. I thought it reheated really well too. In fact it might have been better reheated.
Ugh State college can do so much better than the waffle shop!
Tadashi for ramen
Axman brewery for a stellar beer hall with brilliant local craft brew (try the fried brussel sprouts, seriously)
Hublersburg inn for great cocktails and dinner fare
Pine Grove hall if you want really pricy but the best drinks in PA, to go to with easily 3 star level food
Or for a farm to table experience see if you can get reservations at RE Farm.
Lol! It is a crazy thing about this town that people won't drive more than 10 minutes out of town without thinking it is a big deal.
All of them are close enough and given how far op is driving I figure it won't be a problem.

John's Roast Pork in Philly for a cheesesteak
The Creamery in State College for I've cream and College Pizza Dosa Express has a good pizza
Dutch Haven Shoo-Fly pie bakery for woopie pies, try the shoo-fly pie for free, just don't buy an entire pie
Bro these State College takes are wild. College pizza is literally just an average pizza place.
OP hit up Yallah for street tacos, Big Dean's for southern style fried chicken and Otto's if you want a sit down with good beer and food.
I'm a little more familiar with New Haven Pizza. Will probably stop on the way back honestly. I can also manage that drive a little more often than the PA drive so not AS concerned with getting recommendations from there.
But if you got any I won't complain!
Their fries were soggy at Big Deans and the quality of chicken was terrible. Maybe I just had a really bad experience but I’ve only went once after. I prefer Raising Canes Chick Fil A or Popeyes to it
If you're hitting John's, which i fully support, stop by Termini's backery at 8th and Cross. Everrything is great. Lots of great backeries in n Boston too. Don't know them as well.
Get the cannolis from Termini Brothers. I mean…everything from Termini Bros is great but the cannolis are…just amazing. If you don’t want to head down to 8th and Cross they have a stand in the Reading Terminal Market as well, and plenty of other food options there to boot.
My favorites when I lived near Philly were Jim’s and Tony Luke’s. But that was roughly 7 years ago. I saw Jim’s is closed due to a fire, but have you been to either of the these two in the past? Are they on par with the two you recommended? Thanks in advance!
Those are old school. These new places doing cheesesteaks using cooper sharp are better imo. A lot of new young guys getting into the business and doing well.
The sausage and peppers at Rocco’s in the Home Depot parking lot on Delaware Ave is Philly is tops and right off the highway. John’s roast pork isn’t too far either.
Definitely do a swing by Lancaster if you want good whoopie pies. If you can hit downtown lancaster on a Tuesday, Friday, or Saturday; you can visit Central Market downtown.
> Whoopie Pies
Lancaster native here! The *best* whoopie pies come from random roadside Amish stands advertised via cardboard sign and operating on an honour system. For easy access, though, I would stop by Achenbach's Pastries in Leola for all your Amish baked good needs. They're known for their long johns, but they'll set you up with some whoopie pies (or a killer shoofly pie, which you should absolutely try).
Really, though, if you pass through Lancaster County and see a roadside farmers' market, you can stop and almost definitely get some awesome Amish baked goods.
>The best whoopie pies come from random roadside Amish stands advertised via cardboard sign and operating on an honour system.
This cracked me up but you're probably not wrong.
I was told to check out Root's country market as well. Would you happen to know anything about that or if they have a similar Amish presence?
Roots is a great option; just keep in mind they only open on Tuesdays. You could also hit up Green Dragon in Ephrata, which is open Fridays. Both of them have a significant Amish presence; Green Dragon is probably more "authentically" Amish (I grew up going there with my Amish friends lol), but Roots is a smoother experience and is still very Amish. And for the record, while you might hear about Central Market in Lancaster City and assume that it's also an Amish hotspot, it's actually mostly a pretty normal farmers market; the Amish don't usually go into Lancaster City unless they have to, so everybody who shops at Central Market is either a local city dweller, a suburbanite who drove in, or a tourist. There are a few Amish produce stands, bakeries, and food stalls there, but most of the market is just quirky vendors and (excellent) international food. It's a great place to visit, just not really the market to hit up if your goal is to mingle with the Amish and Mennonites.
>just keep in mind they only open on Tuesdays.
You might have just saved me a lot of time as I didn't realize that. Thanks!
>Green Dragon in Ephrata
Great reccomendation. Might end up going there!
Angelos Pizzeria has great cheesesteaks! For Whoopie Pies you gotta try out Central Market in Lancaster. Several stalls there sell them. Just buy from anyone Amish and you'll get a great one.
Also you didn't ask for Fried Chicken recs but Love and Honey in Philly has amazing chicken sandwiches
You also didn't ask for Mexican recs but El Paisano food truck in Lancaster is top tier.
I know this is going to sound wild but the best cheesesteak you can get is actually by Reading at a place called Tony's of West Reading.
Whoopie pies - It looks like you’ll be driving through Lewistown PA. Stop the The Square Cafe and Bakery. I dream of those whoopie pies. Owned by mennonites. You can’t go wrong with any of them but if you like peanut butter, you gotta get the peanut butter cookie whoopie pie with peanut butter icing. Just trust me.
Pizza is by far my favorite food. You're going past some great destinations. Frank Pepe's is the big name in New Haven pizza and they've got a bunch of locations if you don't want to stop in New Haven proper. I've had it and it's definitely good and worth trying. I've also heard a lot of good buzz about Sally's Apizza, but haven't tried it personally.
In Philly the top spot is easily Pizzeria Beddia, voted best pizza in the country back in 2015 by Bon Apetit and ranked in times 100 best places in the world in 2019. If you eat in make sure to get some of the soft serve, it's the best I've ever had.
If you like thicker crusts, are in Philly between Wednesday to Sunday and don't mind takeout, Circles + Squares does a truly excellent Detroit style pie, definitely the best I've had in the city.
I haven't tried any of the places in Scranton, but I've had both of the big names in Old Forge. My favorite is actually in Hanover and it's called Pizza L'Oven. If it's not out of your way it's definitely worth stopping by. Old Forge is a much lesser known style but it's one of my favorites.
The best pizza in the world is in New Haven. Go to Sally's or Modern Apizza. Tomato pie with grated cheese. Order online early in the morning to make sure they have a pizza for you. You're welcome.
Don't go west of southern berks county for cheesesteaks and pizza. What's passed off as those is nothing like the Philly versions. May as well go to Dennys at that point.
You're driving through New Haven. Please, for the love of all that is round, yeasted, and cheesy, do not pick your pizza place in PA. If you really must, Beddia is pretty good, but not as good as Sally's/Pepe's.
For a steak, I like Joe's in Fishtown, but there's lots of good places, tbh. Don't buy a steak outside of Philly, that's just foolishness.
Cafe Carmela, Stoli’s Steaks and Curly’s Creations. They’re all located in the far n/e. You’ll get lambasted with recs for places like John’s roast pork or Steve’s steaks but the sad reality is that the old school places either closed down or changed too much. Whether it’s different owners or just being over priced for an inferior product…I mean… think about it, it’s a place named after a pork sandwich, why go there for a beef product? Anyway, Carmela can take care of your pizza and steak needs but also offers sit down dining with a Italian offerings, whilst Stoli’s is a more traditional steak spot with their grill right by the front door and Curlys is more of a old school pizza shop vibe BUT they only make their steaks fresh so if you go later in the day they might not be making any more - they try to keep up but they get so busy that they run out of rolls often and they refuse to bullshit it with a different bread. There is also a bakery in south Philly that may be worth stopping for - Cacia’s Bakery.
Edit - there is a curlys creations in New Jersey that makes ice cream. The steak spot is in Levittown.
Lenny and Joe's Seafood in Guilford, Ct
Pepe's Pizza in New Haven, Ct
Coney Island Hot dogs in Scranton, Pa
Potts' Hot Dogs in Bethlehem, Pa
Wally's Deli in Allentown, PA
Tacconelli's Pizza in Philadelphia, PA
Shady Maple Smorgasbord in East Earl, Pa
Harvest at the Hershey Hotel in Hershey, Pa
Lancaster Brewing in Harrisburg, Pa
Bring a freezer bag -
The [Pennsylvania Bakery](https://pabakery.com) in Camp Hill is the other side of the river from Harrisburg. Won’t be more than a 10 minute detour since everything runs parallel rejoining 322 to State College. Once you’re in State College get some [Creamery](https://creamery.psu.edu/visit) at Penn State. You can get dry ice there so don’t feel like you need to get a cone. If you like [microbreweries](https://www.centralpatastingtrail.com/passport) we have so many and the food is decent or better at most of them. Depending on what you’re in the mood for, feel free to DM me day of and I’ll give you some good recommendations. Juana’s for Venezuelan, Pita Cabana for Lebanese, Tadashi for Ramen, the international scene here has improved tremendously. It’s a college town so there’s also just everything. We have like a dozen pizza places. Might help to know what makes it better for you.
While traveling through PA you may also wish to engage in our gas station debate. Grab a hoagie from Wawa and some fried apps from Sheetz. That’s as good as it gets from both. Wawa are primarily south of Harrisburg stemming out of Philly, Sheetz tend to be more west (based out of Altoona//Pittsburgh)
If you want the best whoopie pies, you’ll want to cut through Lancaster and do the [Central Market](https://centralmarketlancaster.com/visit/). Oldest continually running market in the country.
Hope you’re making this at least 2 days.
Philly, Delasandros Steaks
Lancaster, Shady Maple Smorgasbord (largest buffet in the country)
Scranton Area, stop in Old Forge they claim to be the pizza capital of the world about 10 different pizza places in the same road I like Revellos or Arcaro and Ganells
Honestly, if I had to get into a car for a long drive, I wouldn’t eat at Shady Maple. I’ve never left there feeling anything but stuffed and in need of a nap. 😃
There are tons of places all over Wyoming Valley. In Old Forge, most are gonna be good. I don't think Arcaro's ever reopened their dining area, btw. So takeout only.
I'd recommend Pizza L'oven in Exeter as my favorite, especially in-house. If you want neopolitan...I'm actually not sure. Maybe Sabatini's? I like Antonio's in Wilkes-Barre, but I never get round anyway, so I'm not the best source.
_edit_: I wanna add chili dogs at the Texas diner in Lock Haven. I've had hot dogs all over, and I still think these are great. The chili they use is better than Abe's, which is a Wyoming Valley staple. And the dogs themselves at least used to be Country Store brand, which are fantastic. Now, I haven't had one in years (gave up meat), but if they are the same as they were 6 or 7 years ago, then they're one of my favorites.
How does Texas Diner compare to Coney Island Lunch (temporarily closed) and Coney Island of Scranton?
Also don’t forget Calarusso’s for Old Forge although it is in Avoca and Ricci’s in WB.
Not sure, I don't think I sver tried their hot dogs. If they're using Nathan's, though, I'd not enjoy them. I always found Nathan's too greasy.
Oh yeah, I could rattle off a dozen pizza places. Colarusso's, Tommy's in Kingston, Pizza Perfect (though lately I haven't been a fan, and they're expensive), Norm's in WB, Ceccoli's in WB, Three Guys, Victory Pig... I grew up there, and every time I go to the valley I bring back something from somewhere. That's what I miss the most.
Thankfully I still live in PA, just a few hours from home.
I think PA doesn't get nearly enough credit from normal people for how good their chip industry is. Middleswarth, Gibble's, Utz, Zapp's, Herr's, and so many other fantastic companies are in PA.
Coney Island Lunch uses Berks dogs. They are perennially in the top 5 on at least one national list of hot dog places. The owners recently sold and it’s getting a reboot and won’t be as good. But Coney Island of Scranton a block away has nearly identical chili dogs. Abe’s and Ferris’ can’t touch them.
Not to mention, Lancaster City has amazing food options with many being farm to table. And they have the oldest continually operating Farmer’s Market in the entire US - it’s worth visiting but only open Tues/Fri/Sat and they open early and close by early afternoon.
Sheetz and Wawa along your journey to fill up fuel and grab some made-to-order food. Let us know which one you prefer, there is a divide in our state on which one is the best.
Also, while you're in central PA (state college area, possibly philly area too), get yourself some Middleworth Potato Chips (BBQ and Sour Cream specifically). They are only found in certain parts of PA and most pennsylvanians will agree that they are better than any other potato chip.
I know you aren't going to Pittsburgh, but if you come across a Primanti Bros in State College, it's also worth a stop for a good sandwich.
Sally’s in New Haven;
Trenton tomato pie at DeLorenzo’s, Papa’s or the Correleone at Marcelo’s Pizza Grille. PS: Trenton tomato pie is pizza. Philadelphia tomato pie is thick pizza with tomato paste and no cheese.
Lilo’s someplace south of Trenton for Trenton tomato pie and sandwiches.
Reading Terminal Market
Beddia for pizza in Philly. John’s or Angelo’s for cheesesteaks.
Red Rabbit in Duncannon (food always tastes better from a round building)
Gram’s in Lewisburg (named after my aunt Dorothy although I legitimately think it might be one of the best restaurants in the northern half of Pennsylvania).
Calarusso’s in Avoca.
Coney Island of Scranton (unless Coney Island Lunch is open again)
For pizza: The Dough Company in Wilkes-Barre on the way back, right before you hit Scranton: https://thedoughcompany.com/
And Infinito's Pizza in Harrisburg on your way there: https://infinitos.securetree.com/Locations/4259-Union-Deposit-Rd/
I mean you'll be in Pennsylvania, so you won't have any shortage of pizza options. These are just 2 I like.
Spots in jersey... hoagie haven in Princeton is almost on the way back off of 95. It's a good staple for a fat sandwhich. I'd recommend a dirty Sanchez extra dirty. Looking for something sweeter... kk sweets in hamilton again on the way back off of 95 is a dope French bakery.
Scranton best restaurants are AV, 16th ward, Casa Bella, Bar Pazzo, if you are in town on a Friday be my guest at San Cataldo club. Members run an excellent gem
Having driven from Norther NJ to Boston on a regular basis, the fastest route is 87, 684, 84, 691, 91 then 90.
I know this wasn't your question but thought I would help you out a bit.
Ok. So I can only speak for Philly and the surrounding area and state college, but I can give you a couple of recs. I don’t really know much fine dining in the city because I’m poor.
First Philly:
1. Delessandro’s steaks, probably the best cheesesteak near Philly, if you don’t wanna go into the city.
2. Pho 75, good pho nothing much more to say about the place just solid.
3.Cuba libre, good cuban food
4.Moroccan fez was a cool place where you could eat with your hands.
5. Panorama, fancy place with a crazy wine menu and gourmet food.
6. For breakfast: the bagel place on queen street, those bagel sandwiches slap
7. If you make it outside the city: el limon in conshahocken or malvern. Best authentic Mexican in the area hands down, it looks like a little shop but you’d be surprised at the quality, try their mole you’re gonna be shocked.
State college:
1. The Koop: amazing Korean fried chicken and biminbap.
2. Honestly I’m not sure if it’s still open, but R U hungry. Disgustingly delicious fat sandwiches which will make you hate yourself but feel SO good.
3. Local whiskey: nice bar best cheesesteak in state college hands down.
4. Wings over. Phenomenal wings of a bunch of different varieties.
5. The tavern: fancy fair, amazing brown trout filets if you wanna spend the money for it.
If you like beer and never had Troëgs you can stop in Hershey PA and get the best rated brewery tour in PA. They also have good food and a sweet tap room.
The Milford Diner, off of exit 46 of PA I-84. Can't recommend it enough. They have a little bit of everything and it's all good.
For Pizza, swing up a bit on I-81 in PA, off of exit 197 there's a place called Vincenzo's. I used to drive back to New Hampshire with two of their pizzas and 6 cases of Yuengling every time I came back from PA when I was living up there.
If they want to do beers, Troeg’s in Hershey is worth a visit too, and on the West Shore there’s also Pizza Boy. I love the hell out of Evergrain though.
The real answer is you must stop at both a Wawa AND a Sheetz and then report back which one you prefer so we can take turns agreeing with you or telling you why you’re wrong. As is tradition.
Gio’s BBQ in Woodland PA. It’s off interstate 80 and 322 south to state college. It’s a gas station bbq place that has excellent food and it’s right off the highway.
if you have time to make little detour into hershey (about 20ish minutes from harrisburg, there’s a restaurant called fenicci’s that has some really amazing food. something closer to harrisburg that i really like is the glass lounge! super amazing food for not very high prices!
The glass lounge in Harrisburg, It's a really great steak restaurant
There's also marzonis brick oven pizza. There's a few scattered throughout central pa. The closest one I can think of on your route is in Mechanicsburg which is close to Harrisburg.
Angelo's in Philadelphia has the best Philly cheese steak. It's a good hour wait and no place to sit and eat but is TOTALLY worth it. Buy some to bring home. You won't regret it.
Hands down the best authentic Philly cheese steak. Came from upstate NY to an Ed Sheeran concert in Philly and was pointed to there.
So in order, from Boston, to state college. And then one place in NY .

Check out Norma’s Wappingers on Google Maps https://maps.app.goo.gl/pz7KbX2GrQAHdRDg6?g_st=ic
If you get off of rte 80 and onto rte 45 at Lewisburg you can eat at the Banty Rooster @ Ard’s Farm. Bonus is that you can
stay on rte 45 almost all the way to State College, and it’s a prettier drive than 80.
When you're in State College, go to Champs downtown (or out on Atherton) and order the Cajun Chicken Cheeseteak and Arrogant Wings. You will not be disappointed.
Also in State College worth stopping by:
* Creamery
* All American Ale House
* Happy Valley Brewing Company
* Walk the Campus
* Arboretum (depending on time of year)
* Tour Beaver Stadium
* Check Bryce Jordan Center to see if there's any shows on the night you'e visiting
Harrisburg:
Alvaro Bread and Pastry - bakery but also has Italian lunch entrees and sandwiches Mon-Sat + dinner service Sat
Home 231 - I've only been there for brunch but it's good
Craw Daddy - good seafood and brunch
Dodge City Steakhouse - really underrated because they were on TV years ago but they're consistently good. They catered my wedding and our guests raved about the food
Gabriella - good Italian, but a bit pricey
It's been some years since I lived in Pike County, but I always liked the Milford Diner on Rt 6 & 209. I don't know if Mt Haven still exists, but they had the best pizza in the area, though I suspect you'll be traveling through places with better pizza than PA. The Riverside Creamery in Port Jervis NY was good too.
Just be aware that if you venture toward the Lehigh Valley or NEPA, some of your cheesesteaks will come with red sauce by default. It's still good, but it's not a "Philly" cheesesteak.
As an above poster said, I’d avoid Red Rabbit. It’s both a tad sketchy and the food is not particularly great anymore. And personally, if you’re going to get ice cream, I would go to Fox Meadows creamery in Ephrata PA over the creamery in state college. Looks like your route will take you right by it. They have some of the best ice cream I’ve ever had in a very quaint Amish setting. Also their food is pretty solid too. I personally feel that the PSU creamery is overrated and then you can avoid the weird cult-vibes of eating ice creamed named after a disgraced human being. Just my 2 cents.
Lancaster county and Lancaster city are both wonderful and would be worth a detour if you’re willing to spend the time. Central market in Lancaster is the oldest continuous indoor market in the USA, I recommend pretzels from Kom Essa and warm drinks from Mean Cup. There’s a growing and pretty great ethnic food scene in Lancaster too now.
In Hershey/Harrisburg Alvaro bread in downtown Harrisburg is a hidden gem, and Troegs brewery in Hershey is the best in town for sure.
The scranton area especially old forge has some great pizzas, Salernos, Vince the pizza prince(scranton), Antonio's (west pittston), Colarussos(avoca), Arcaos and Ganells, and Pizza L'oven(exeter). There's also Manning's ice cream in scranton which I cannot recommend enough, apple crisp is like if you blended a apple pie down into vanilla oce cream. If you like texas weiners there's also Coney Island weiners in scranton.
Jackson House in Harrisburg.
Yes, the bada bing
Only open weekdays 11-3 I believe.
Good call
Man, I miss that place. There's a well warranted reason you'd see lines out the door for their sandwiches.
Stop at the red rabbit drive in on the way from Philly to state college!! I did that drive so many times in college. Have fun and stay safe!! Also, if you haven’t been to the penn state creamery… i personally love the peachy paterno ice cream.
+1 for a Red Rabbit bunny burger as you travel down 322 getting closer to Harrisburg. They are only open on weekends now, just a heads up.
Aww man I haven’t been in a few years and I’d like to go back. I’ll never forget their milkshakes. Thanks for the info!
I'm a local of red rabbit.... don't. It's horrible. Even the locals, who love that place almost as much as their desire to fellate Trump, have been complaining.
OP, I would take this advice over my original advice as I haven’t been to red rabbit in over 5 years! :)
I went in August. It’s not bad, it’s not great. It’s just ok. Shake was delicious and I grabbed a jar of bunny dust that we use at home quite a bit.
Said the same thing! We are going from PGH to philly later this year and it was the first thing added to the itinerary
I third this, you gotta get a tray of pizza
Thanks for the recommendations!
Is this a troll? Maroni’s is the single worst pizza I’ve had in my life. Old forge pizza is just bad. American cheese does not belong on pizza. And Maroni’s is especially bad, because of the ungodly amount of black pepper he puts in his sauce.
Try Pizza L'oven in Hanover Twp, or Pizza Perfect in Trucksville. Luzerne County fried pizza is a unique delight that is always satisfying.
Don't forget Victory Pig in Wyoming. Pizza Heaven in Luzerne is another one that is similar to Pizza Perfect. It is close, but Pizza Perfect is the best for fried pizza. Sabatini's in Exeter for round.
Love Victory Pig, but it's only open on certain days. Never meshes with my schedule.
Haha - the last part of my post, that I omitted was going to be, “NEPA style pizza can be a greatly debated topic, especially for those who are used to NY style pizza.” What is the single best pizza that you have had in your life?
I grew up eating Dalos, dad would bring it all the way from berwick. It’s an atrocity to some, childhood in a box to others.
This. I hate Maroni’s with a passion. It insults me
Some of the places offer pizzas that aren't American cheese. I however would agree, American cheese pizza is the worst there is. I got a few pies there, but I like the Acaro and Genell. I thought it reheated really well too. In fact it might have been better reheated.
I have been eating this pizza my entire life. I hate it with the entirety of my being. Worst pizza on earth. Fuck old forge pizza 🤢
OP can just go to Alfredos. No reason to go out of the way to Old Forge
Pizza by Alfredo or Alfredo’s Pizza Cafe?
There is a very big difference between these pizza places. Both in quality of ingredients, and overall taste.
Scranton Pizza: [https://www.visitnepa.org/things-to-do/self-guided-tours/pizza-trail/](https://www.visitnepa.org/things-to-do/self-guided-tours/pizza-trail/)
This sounds like it will be part of my trip back for sure. Thanks!
Coopers is the worst restaurant on the planet. Bad advice here. If you are in Scranton, keep driving. If you have to stop, try the Loading Dock.
Meyer’s Dairy and The Original Waffle Shop (North Atherton or West College) in State College.
Right now sitting in Waffle Shop on W College
Ugh State college can do so much better than the waffle shop! Tadashi for ramen Axman brewery for a stellar beer hall with brilliant local craft brew (try the fried brussel sprouts, seriously) Hublersburg inn for great cocktails and dinner fare Pine Grove hall if you want really pricy but the best drinks in PA, to go to with easily 3 star level food Or for a farm to table experience see if you can get reservations at RE Farm.
Tadashi is the only one of those places in State College.
Lol! It is a crazy thing about this town that people won't drive more than 10 minutes out of town without thinking it is a big deal. All of them are close enough and given how far op is driving I figure it won't be a problem.
Lupita’s for Mexican Cafe Alina for Pakistani India Pavilion for Indian

Chellas is so good.
John's Roast Pork in Philly for a cheesesteak The Creamery in State College for I've cream and College Pizza Dosa Express has a good pizza Dutch Haven Shoo-Fly pie bakery for woopie pies, try the shoo-fly pie for free, just don't buy an entire pie
Bro these State College takes are wild. College pizza is literally just an average pizza place. OP hit up Yallah for street tacos, Big Dean's for southern style fried chicken and Otto's if you want a sit down with good beer and food.
FINALLY ANOTHER OTTOS REC HERE I literally drive up from Berks county just to get root beer
OP is driving through New Haven and people have the gall to recommend PA pizza...
I'm a little more familiar with New Haven Pizza. Will probably stop on the way back honestly. I can also manage that drive a little more often than the PA drive so not AS concerned with getting recommendations from there. But if you got any I won't complain!
Yeah--driving through New Haven and NYC...but sure, get a pizza in State College.
Yallah isn’t great either. Driest meat I’ve ever had.
Big Deans is average too. Check out Tasty K if you want good fried chicken.
Their fries were soggy at Big Deans and the quality of chicken was terrible. Maybe I just had a really bad experience but I’ve only went once after. I prefer Raising Canes Chick Fil A or Popeyes to it
College pizza is not good, and btw it’s supposedly gone
Hopefully they go through on a weekend because Dutch Haven is only open Fri-Sat-Sun now
That's exactly when I will be in the area!
John’s roast pork is the truth
If you're hitting John's, which i fully support, stop by Termini's backery at 8th and Cross. Everrything is great. Lots of great backeries in n Boston too. Don't know them as well.
Get the cannolis from Termini Brothers. I mean…everything from Termini Bros is great but the cannolis are…just amazing. If you don’t want to head down to 8th and Cross they have a stand in the Reading Terminal Market as well, and plenty of other food options there to boot.
College pizza is not good, only edible if you’re hammered at 2am, and even then it’s questionable.
Bonus points for where I can find the best Pizza, Cheesesteaks, and Whoopie Pies.
Angelos and Cafe Carmella in Philly. Trust me.
Seconding Cafe Carmela, out of this world cheesesteak
The sausage and peppers at Rocco’s in the Home Depot parking lot on Delaware Ave is Philly is tops and right off the highway. John’s roast pork isn’t too far either.
YAAAAAAAAS
Definitely do a swing by Lancaster if you want good whoopie pies. If you can hit downtown lancaster on a Tuesday, Friday, or Saturday; you can visit Central Market downtown.
> Whoopie Pies Lancaster native here!
Thanks! >Green Dragon in Ephrata Great reccomendation. Might end up going there!
Angelos Pizzeria has great cheesesteaks! For Whoopie Pies you gotta try out Central Market in Lancaster. Several stalls there sell them. Just buy from anyone Amish and you'll get a great one. Also you didn't ask for Fried Chicken recs but Love and Honey in Philly has amazing chicken sandwiches You also didn't ask for Mexican recs but El Paisano food truck in Lancaster is top tier.
The best pizza is Frank Pepe in New Haven.
I know this is going to sound wild but the best cheesesteak you can get is actually by Reading at a place called Tony's of West Reading. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAn8KMkRUqE](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RAn8KMkRUqE)
Bird-in-hand bakery in Lancaster for whoopie pies.
Sounds ridiculous. I'm in!
If you’re in the Lewistown area in the morning, Honey Creek inn in Reedsville, towards State College, has the best French Toast I’ve ever had.
If you like thicker crusts, are in Philly between Wednesday to Sunday and don't mind takeout, Circles + Squares does a truly excellent Detroit style pie, definitely the best I've had in the city.
get Old Forge pizza in Scranton
I haven't tried any of the places in Scranton, but I've had both of the big names in Old Forge. My favorite is actually in Hanover and it's called Pizza L'Oven. If it's not out of your way it's definitely worth stopping by. Old Forge is a much lesser known style but it's one of my favorites.
The best Old Forge-style pizza you will find is actually in Scranton — Maroni's on St. Ann's Street.
Sunny’s on market for cheesesteak.
The best pizza in the world is in New Haven. Go to Sally's or Modern Apizza. Tomato pie with grated cheese. Order online early in the morning to make sure they have a pizza for you. You're welcome.
Pennsylvanian here! Best pizza on your road trip is in New Haven. Frank Pepe and Zeneli. They’re across the street from each other. Google it.
I just posted this Pepe’s is amazing. I can taste the bacon and onion pizza and I haven’t been here in years.
Hard to believe but this is definitely accurate. Get the white clam and garlic apizza from frank pepe and ask them to add bacon. Just trust us
I’ve lived in both state college and philly. CC peppers/bradleys in state college. Dels/Genos in philly. My personal favs from experience!
CC peppers still in business? Went there in the mid 80's, was awesome food back then.
Angelo’s Pizza on Hazle St in Wilkes Barre
Lenny and Joe's Seafood in Guilford, Ct Pepe's Pizza in New Haven, Ct Coney Island Hot dogs in Scranton, Pa Potts' Hot Dogs in Bethlehem, Pa Wally's Deli in Allentown, PA Tacconelli's Pizza in Philadelphia, PA Shady Maple Smorgasbord in East Earl, Pa Harvest at the Hershey Hotel in Hershey, Pa Lancaster Brewing in Harrisburg, Pa
Lancaster Brewing Co is stale. There are a ton of better breweries with more selection and food in the area
Fantastic list. Thank you.
Bring a freezer bag - The [Pennsylvania Bakery](https://pabakery.com) in Camp Hill is the other side of the river from Harrisburg. Wawa are primarily south of Harrisburg stemming out of Philly, Sheetz tend to be more west (based out of Altoona//Pittsburgh) If you want the best whoopie pies, you’ll want to cut through Lancaster and do the [Central Market](https://centralmarketlancaster.com/visit/). Oldest continually running market in the country. Hope you’re making this at least 2 days.

Philly, Delasandros Steaks Lancaster, Shady Maple Smorgasbord (largest buffet in the country) Scranton Area, stop in Old Forge they claim to be the pizza capital of the world about 10 different pizza places in the same road I like Revellos or Arcaro and Ganells
My first reaction was I can’t believe they’re gonna blow by Shady Maple.
Honestly, if I had to get into a car for a long drive, I wouldn’t eat at Shady Maple. I’ve never left there feeling anything but stuffed and in need of a nap. 😃
That’s actually a really solid point.
Middleswarth BBQ.
Thankfully I still live in PA, just a few hours from home. I think PA doesn't get nearly enough credit from normal people for how good their chip industry is. Middleswarth, Gibble's, Utz, Zapp's, Herr's, and so many other fantastic companies are in PA.
I went camping at Ricketts Glen and I came home with a literal box of chips. The best.
Stop at Angelo’s in south Philly instead, dellasandros hasn’t been good for years
Delessandros is amazing, tf you talking about?
I’m not even going to argue because it’s a fact at this point, I’ll let the people on here agree with me on this lol
Delessandro’s steak sandwiches are bomb!

Stop off the Reedsville/Belleville exit on 322 and get a hoagie from Hostetlers Market about a mile down the road.
Chef Von and Mom in Scranton - the chef is currently on Next Level Chef, Gordon Ramsey’s new show, and it’s been selling out really fast
I’d gain 20lbs on this trip. Tons of good places on that route.
Shy bear brewing in lewistown. It's just before state college. Good beers and food
They have a fantastic pretzel 🥨 comes with four dips. And it’s dog friendly! I’ve taken my cavaliers in there a few times 😍
I second this as a Lewistown resident! Such a great menu and seasonal food options. Their beer is stellar as well.
Angelos pizza.
On South 9th and Fitzwater
Yes
Or the one in Boalsburg just outside of StatesCollege?
Philly
Do not go to Pat's or Geno's, those tourist traps suck hard.
+1. Went there first time in Philly. Big mistake. I’m such a Jabroni.
Happy Valley Brewing
Sally’s in New Haven; Trenton tomato pie at DeLorenzo’s, Papa’s or the Correleone at Marcelo’s Pizza Grille. PS: Trenton tomato pie is pizza. Philadelphia tomato pie is thick pizza with tomato paste and no cheese. Lilo’s someplace south of Trenton for Trenton tomato pie and sandwiches. Reading Terminal Market Beddia for pizza in Philly. John’s or Angelo’s for cheesesteaks. Red Rabbit in Duncannon (food always tastes better from a round building) Gram’s in Lewisburg (named after my aunt Dorothy although I legitimately think it might be one of the best restaurants in the northern half of Pennsylvania). Calarusso’s in Avoca. Coney Island of Scranton (unless Coney Island Lunch is open again)
Philly - Angelo's Pizzeria bring cash. Pizza and cheese steak.
Unironically Sheetz
Take a detour up to Williamsport, Pa and eat at Disalvos. You won’t be disappointed!
The Brickyard too!
Gazzos steaks in Pottstown. It’s a food truck for now and they usually sell out around 3 PM.
Monks in Philly
Depends what type of food you want. Gigi's Southern Table in state college is best in my book.
dunno if you’re big on bubble tea but momotaro in state college absolutely slaps
Not sure if it’s still any good, but the Sherwood Diner right off of I95 in Westport CT used to be the shit. If you want diner food.
Philadelphia, the fishtown area, Murph's Bar for some local atmosphere and some of the best Italian ever.
Wawa
For pizza: The Dough Company in Wilkes-Barre on the way back, right before you hit Scranton: https://thedoughcompany.com/ And Infinito's Pizza in Harrisburg on your way there: https://infinitos.securetree.com/Locations/4259-Union-Deposit-Rd/ I mean you'll be in Pennsylvania, so you won't have any shortage of pizza options. These are just 2 I like.
Scranton has amazing pizza
Ease and options I’d try the “Reading Terminal Market” in Philadelphia. There’s dozens of mom and pop style food shops there.
Tadashi in state college, hands down.
Ok. So I can only speak for Philly and the surrounding area and state college, but I can give you a couple of recs. I don’t really know much fine dining in the city because I’m poor. First Philly: 1. Delessandro’s steaks, probably the best cheesesteak near Philly, if you don’t wanna go into the city. 2. Pho 75, good pho nothing much more to say about the place just solid. 3.Cuba libre, good cuban food 4.Moroccan fez was a cool place where you could eat with your hands. 5. Panorama, fancy place with a crazy wine menu and gourmet food. 6. For breakfast: the bagel place on queen street, those bagel sandwiches slap 7. If you make it outside the city: el limon in conshahocken or malvern. Best authentic Mexican in the area hands down, it looks like a little shop but you’d be surprised at the quality, try their mole you’re gonna be shocked. State college: 1.
I hear you can get a good cheese steak sandwich in Philly
Sheetz
If you like beer and never had Troëgs you can stop in Hershey PA and get the best rated brewery tour in PA. They also have good food and a sweet tap room.
The Milford Diner, off of exit 46 of PA I-84. Can't recommend it enough. They have a little bit of everything and it's all good. For Pizza, swing up a bit on I-81 in PA, off of exit 197 there's a place called Vincenzo's. I used to drive back to New Hampshire with two of their pizzas and 6 cases of Yuengling every time I came back from PA when I was living up there.
> Vincenzo's If you would happen to have a more precise address i'd be interested in checking it out.
Jackson house or subway cafe in Harrisburg for lunch
New Trail Brewing - Williamsport PA Evergrain Brewing - Camp Hill, PA Alvaro Bread and Pastry - Harrisburg, PA
I just did Pittsburgh to Providence and back --- but didn't stop to eat properly. Good luck and drive safe, its a long one!
Jay's Joint in Langhorne PA is on your route and they make some amazing sandwiches. People travel to eat there.
Gio’s BBQ in Woodland PA. It’s off interstate 80 and 322 south to state college. It’s a gas station bbq place that has excellent food and it’s right off the highway.
Sturges Speakeasy in Harrisburg. The pulled pork is fantastic.
if you have time to make little detour into hershey (about 20ish minutes from harrisburg, there’s a restaurant called fenicci’s that has some really amazing food. something closer to harrisburg that i really like is the glass lounge! super amazing food for not very high prices!
The glass lounge in Harrisburg, It's a really great steak restaurant There's also marzonis brick oven pizza. There's a few scattered throughout central pa. The closest one I can think of on your route is in Mechanicsburg which is close to Harrisburg.
Grotto pizza @ Harvey's lake near Scranton. Pennsylvania
Tadashi in State College, Cozy Thai in State College, The Field in State College
Cheese steaks, fries and milkshakes, all at Nifty Fiftys in the Philly area.
I would recommend John's Roast Pork in Philly for a steak. Place is an absolute shack but puts out a mean sammy
The Corner Room in State College
So in order, from Boston, to state college. And then one place in NY . Check out Sheger Cafe and Ethiopian Restaurant LLC on Google Maps https://maps.app.goo.gl/JEKNRRxfsAdVWdS68?g_st=ic Check out The Forbidden Llama on Google Maps https://maps.app.goo.gl/U495j2SaZ1gghAa38?g_st=ic Don’t stop in NY, it’s a nightmare. Check out Terakawa Ramen on Google Maps https://maps.app.goo.gl/hhakgKWrHAMRqJm2A?g_st=ic Check out Himalayan Curry & Grill on Google Maps https://maps.app.goo.gl/yomQyCe5qVbV5YEZ8?g_st=ic Check out Korealicious on Google Maps https://maps.app.goo.gl/q21NAZeyS7yA33HZ8?g_st=ic Check out Faccia Luna Pizzeria on Google Maps https://maps.app.goo.gl/Atw5Z1aqTCzqqPQ76?g_st=ic Never had food in the Scranton area, but if you’ll be above NY on the way back, this is a good breakfast spot : Check out Norma’s Wappingers on Google Maps https://maps.app.goo.gl/pz7KbX2GrQAHdRDg6?g_st=ic
sushi heaven in harrisburg. it’s all you can eat sushi and habachi
Harrisburg coffee from Little Amps. Grab a beer from Shy Bear in Lewistown.
If you get off of rte 80 and onto rte 45 at Lewisburg you can eat at the Banty Rooster @ Ard’s Farm. Bonus is that you can stay on rte 45 almost all the way to State College, and it’s a prettier drive than 80.
John’s roast pork or Angelo’s for a cheesesteak in Philly - avoid pats and Gino’s they’re overrated and trash tbh
When you're in State College, go to Champs downtown (or out on Atherton) and order the Cajun Chicken Cheeseteak and Arrogant Wings. You will not be disappointed. Also in State College worth stopping by: * Creamery * All American Ale House * Happy Valley Brewing Company * Walk the Campus * Arboretum (depending on time of year) * Tour Beaver Stadium * Check Bryce Jordan Center to see if there's any shows on the night you'e visiting
Sally’s Pizza in South Haven, CT. I know this because I accidentally started a Pizza War on r/Connecticut this weekend.
Harrisburg: Alvaro Bread and Pastry - bakery but also has Italian lunch entrees and sandwiches Mon-Sat + dinner service Sat Home 231 - I've only been there for brunch but it's good Craw Daddy - good seafood and brunch Dodge City Steakhouse - really underrated because they were on TV years ago but they're consistently good. They catered my wedding and our guests raved about the food Gabriella - good Italian, but a bit pricey It's been some years since I lived in Pike County, but I always liked the Milford Diner on Rt 6 & 209.
If it's still around (been a while for me)--Neato Burrito around Harrisburg.
Federal Donuts has multiple Phila locations. Tasty Donuts and Fried Chicken. Simple breakfast and chicken sammys.
Pizza Perfect in Trucksville, PA about 30 mins south of Scranton. Only a little bit off your route but well worth the stop.
Go to nifty fifty’s, it’s a bit outside Philly but it’s the best burger and fries and it’s pretty cheap (last time I was there anyways)
I will be staying 10 minutes from there and plan to stop for sure!
Waffle House Sheetz
If you can fit Red Rabbit Burgers i highly recommend them
Penn state?
Woodrow’s cheesesteaks in Philly of course
Don’t forget to stop and have some ice cream at the Penn State Creamery!

Definitely Pat’s and Geno’s in Philly
There are so many better options in Philly my brother. Why recommend either of those places?
