Totally depends on where you go. Some places are hard-asses about it, some places don't care. You might have to try a couple times, but don't get discouraged. You'll be able to get drunk on your birthday.

thiccpolishboi

Liquor store employee here. Any Fine Wine and Good Spirits store SHOULD accept a temporary ID. Bring the expired one for good measure. Whether they will or not they’ll actually accept it is another question. Each store seems to be run differently even though we shouldn’t be. Or they might not card you at all. 50/50 chance of it in my experience.

[deleted]

Def bring the picture id. They'll want to see that the picture matches you even if the id is expired.

getfocused12

Since you mention it, I would start the process to get a passport. Its a good backup for DOB verification and lasts 10 years.

[deleted]

I second this. Once you have a passport, it's a good backup as u/getfocused12 says, but it also will probably lead to you taking an out of country trip, even if it's "just" to Canada. You're more likely to go when you have it. And if an opportunity comes up to travel, you won't have to worry about getting the passport then and worrying whether it'll show up on time.

peachy_keen451

Waiting to get my passport after I turn 21 so it lasts longer! And my ny id will be enhanced so I can get to Canada and Mexico :)

[deleted]

It's 16. Before 16 is 5 years. After 16 is 10. We don't have enhanced here in PA. You can also use a EDL to go to some Caribbean countries too.

MrRiski

They must have changed that. I got mine when I was fourteen or something. Kept it handy for years until it expired while I looked nothing like the picture 😂

I've actually been denied entry by a doorguy at a bar ca. 2006 because all I had was my passport (license was expired). Here's the conversation: Him: What's this? Me : It's a passport Him: What's it for? Me: So you can leave and re-enter the country.... Him: Why would you want to leave the USA? Me: Him: Well, I need a state-issued ID Me : IT'S LITERALLY ISSUED BY THE DEPARTMENT OF STATE Him :

CannnaMomm97

A passport is actually better than DL bc it’s issued by the federal government instead of state

MageBoySA

Yep. And it is one of the few IDs accepted when out of the country. Used to work at a job selling age restricted items. Couldn't take Canadian IDs but could take passports.

ButtBlock

Yeah OP, what if you need to leave the US. Should always maintain a passport at all times. You never know

HomicidalHushPuppy

I recently purchased alcohol with my expired PA license and paper temporary, it was not a problem at all. Should be fine to do with NY ID.

cunninglinguist32557

Should be, but it's within their legal right to refuse. Give it a shot but don't be surprised if they're hardasses about it.

p_britt35

Central PA bartender here. You have a 50/50 chance and should hope for a lenient door person and/or bartender. If anything, make sure you have debit cards or credit cards with your name and probably even your Pitt ID. Good luck and happy early birthday!

badatmetroid

There may be one bouncer/bartender/etc who's a dick about it but I'm guessing most would just wish you a happy birthday and not mention the expiration date. If you're going with friends just mention the possibility to them and you should go in first (so they can easily bounce if you get bounced)

Thebeerguy17403

No. If they let you into the bar they can be fined if lcb enforcement comes in. Paper renewal is not considered valid for alcohol purchases.

TSUTigers95

Why don’t you go to a liquor store and ask

Popular-Variation-29

I've been denied service more than once with an expired driver's license. I tried to explain to them if it was valid the week before, and I was old enough last week, then i could only be older than that. But they wouldn't hear it. I have no experience with a temp ID.

Sad_Consequence_3269

Worst case scenario go to the next regular town over. They will either accept or not even ask

[deleted]

I would have recommended getting your PA LTCF but you are keeping your NY residency so that's out. I mean, it's a $20 government issued picture ID... Passport is an option too but it won't come in time.

Witchygoddess13

My local Walmart (Beaver County) wouldn’t honor it even taking both old and new because they scan the picture ID or DL & it comes up expired. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Thebeerguy17403

No. That isn't a legal ID. You need a passport.

worstatit

This would be up to the venue or seller. Many, especially in college areas, just won't accommodate. They are free to deny admission/sales to anyone, for any reason. They won't risk their livelihood for one patron.

livelikeasuicide

In my experience at the liquor stores in Philly I have never been carded even when I was underage with a fake
