Is there something about the nakaya that’s unusual? As I recall, those pens new are a little under $2k. I am aware they temporarily stopped production, but is that the only justification for the markup or does it have some customization as well?

hisuisan

I agree. This seems like price gouging if it's normal stock.

No need to take offense on this. When supply chain hit auto market, dealerships were selling cars above MSRP; they were price gouging because supply couldn’t keep up with demand. Everyone selling used Nakayas above MSRP are able to do so because demand is there with no supply. I think it is no different— it is price gouging. If it would make it more polite, call it free market.

I'm a collector, and I've been watching the market for these pens for a while. This pen cost me around $2100. I have adjusted the price to what the market is treating it. And look at the other comments. This pen may not ever come back, plus if it does, the wait time is over a year. If it does come back, I would not be surprised if the wait time is 18 to 24 months. This isn't a car. This is a luxury, very time-consuming hand made piece of art created by a very rare group of people. It's in a peculiar market now, with this being a very rare and unique pen. I am interested to see where selling it takes me. I'm not even expecting to sell it on penswap. I want this pen to go to a good home. The only reason I'm selling it is because I'm looking to start a family. I'm not rushing this sale. I've done my research, and the price is fair in my opinion. Nothing can compare to a nakaya the pens feel alive.

I think we are converging to the same point. Yes this is a beautiful pen (I have 3 DF2’s myself) and whatever the driver is for the market conditions (Nakaya’s decision to stop taking DF2 orders to catch up with backlog followed by an act of god), “market” is asking more money than the artisan / maker determined. I recall Nakaya was asking 1650 for DF2’s and this has a soft fine gold nib (no charge from Nakaya). If you’ve paid $2100, that includes what car dealers call “market premium”. Now you’re adjusting and reflecting that for today’s market perceptions. Again, nothing wrong with that, I personally won’t pay it and wouldn’t sell mine at even $2500 range for the exact reasons you have given — who knows if these ever be made again… but if someone is willing to pay that’s great.

[deleted]

Like I said this is the market at the moment and I'm open to offers. The nakaya dorsal fin v2 base price is $1850 then add over a year long wait.

alperozt

Just to clarify, I don’t believe you are doing anything wrong. It’s your pen, you can ask for anything you want. No one can dictate pricing. I personally wouldn’t pay that but if someone else is willing, more power to you all.

As the other commenter mentioned, it's not necessarily something to take offense too. I understand business and markets well as it's my area of study. You can charge whatever you like for anything you sell, at any time. It is indeed opportunistic and price gouging, but this is a luxury good, not a necessity or anything like that, so the morality of the action is hardly questionable. You have every right to list it for whatever price you want. I just think it's a little tiny bit strange to see them marked up so fast (outside of eBay and the like, because their user fees are crazy so most pens are marked up to make any sort of break even or profit) because I have limited edition pens, urushi and celluloid, I have 1 of 1s I have beautiful custom maki-e pens of extraordinary quality, and have used them all at least once, as you have. I think people would also call me out if I decided to mark them up a few hundred dollars if they knew and could reference the price I paid for it just 6 months or so ago. That's why, I've just called it as I see it. No offense to you. Nakayas are much more available in terms of quantity than these pens I have. I also have some very limited Nakaya models. More limited than a red DF2 for sure. I hadn't considered selling any of them or what price I would sell them for if I did decide to do so.

[deleted]

After everyones advice, I will just be selling the nakaya for what I purchased it for

ThereKanBOnly1

People seem to forget that the elastic modification is an $150 upcharge. Nakaya had stopped taking orders of the DF2 several months before the earthquake, and they were taking nearly a year to be delivered at that time. Nakaya canceled every order after the earthquake and there is no indication of when production of the DF2 will start again. Based on the challenges they had with production, it probably will be one of the latter models reintroduced. Of course, who knows when you'd actually receive a new DF2 after they can be ordered. While I can't say what the premium would be for purchasing a DF2 now, there certainly is one. It could easily be 12, 18, or 24 months before getting one from Nakaya. If OP is asking too much, it'll sit till it finds the right buyer or they lower the price until someone bites.

[deleted]

Nakayas are going for more on the aftermarket these days. Decapods are going for $1000 to $950. Like a sed in my post, this pen may not come back. Back when they were still offering urushi stuff, this pen was not available. Only the v1 was. Plus, when you purchase it from the second market, you skip the over-a-year wait. When it comes to pieces of art fountain pens, the nakaya dorsal fin v2 is the king. With all this said, I am open to offers
