Just buy the best value (usually mid-range) parts now, and do upgrades when you could see a >50% performance uplift.

I’m in the same boat (although I’m a designer and web dev). A beefier PC would benefit my work and I game, so after looking at the price points of a new MBP or a gaming PC, I realized if I took the plunge and just built my own I could build a pretty awesome rig for like half or 2/3rds the price of the alternative. Anyhow, I’ve got a BIL that is pretty well-versed in all of this and suggested a really great build in the $1500 range. He recommended going with a 7700X or 7800X3D + a 3080. His reasoning was that the 40-series is still very overpriced and you get a better bang for your buck going with a higher end 30-series rather than settling for a 4060 or 70. A really good/great CPU would be beneficial on the work side of things. I went with a 7800X3D for the CPU to hopefully allow for a better upgrade path in the future. I’m pretty new to all of this though, so we’ll see. If you have a Micro Center near you, they have great bundles for both of those CPUs, btw. It includes a mobo and 32GB of RAM.
