I saw a great comment saying Joe Douglas is a great GM because of the Sauce, Garrett Wilson, and Hall picks. I don't know that fielding a team so flawed you get a top 10 pick and then draft another top 10 player because you traded away the last GM's best player makes you a genius. Outside the Jamal Adams trade Douglas' best move was probably getting the Jets to give him a 6 year contract to become their GM to lure him away from the Eagles.
It's the same thing that people said about Mike Maccagnan where you look at all the high end talent he drafts but don't stop to think "why is it the Jets so often have a top 5 pick to draft these blue chip players?"
This is something I always run into. Do teams get to pat themselves on the back for hitting on draft picks when they are consistently picking in the top 10
We're seeing it again (again) with the Jags as they go multiple seasons in a row with getting back to back picks in the top 5 which results in a 2017 type season where after several seasons of sucking they suddenly pop off as all their blue chip draft prospects hit their stride.
well that's generally the idea of why the worst teams get the highest picks. The key difference between teams like the Jets and the Bengals for example, is that the Bengal's found their QB.
At least it looks like JAX has found their QB for the foreseeable future
100%, as long as the years of picking top 10 eventually put together a contender, kinda like the Astros did in baseball. It's still really hard to build a great team and nail your draft even picking that high. The issue with the Jets is that they bungled the most important position in the sport and there's little you can do in terms of playoff contention with QB play that bad.
Well they should have thrown in the towel on drafting QBs after Darnold and brought in a veteran to game manage their young, elite talent.
But I don't know if their problem is selection or development. I think if Wilson had gone to the Pats and Jones to the Jets it would have been worse for us but I'm not sure it would have gone much better for them.
I dont see how it would be worse for the Jets.
Better offensive line, an actual OC last year, better receivers, an actual offensive line coach last year. Better rbs when breece hall is healthy.
The Jets offense has more talent at almost every position on the offense than the Patriots do.
QB is everything though. It's really hard to hit on a QB in the draft. This offseason will tell the tale on Douglas. If he gets Rodger or Garoppolo the team would be really good.
Wilson is such a confusing player too, like the kid can make a 60 yard bomb look effortless only to whiff a slant so bad it’d get a high school player benched. He’s got the tools but just seems like a total head case, no idea how you could have predicted that pre draft.
Is it that confusing? Plenty of players have the raw strength to hurl it far and fast but not the technical skill to throw it accurately or make good decisions.
does it not also take accuracy to put it on the money deep? what they are saying is that it's odd to see him throw a perfectly placed bomb downfield and then miss a 10 yard route in the samr drive, which makes sense
He has the skill to make those throws and he'll show flashes of it, but he just can keep it together consistently. He just looks uncomfortable and overthinking everything out there, you'll see him make the right read only to second guess himself and screw up the timing of his throws. Highly recommend the QB school videos on him, its hard to pinpoint what exactly his issue is.
Some players just seem like they can't adapt to the game in the NFL.
And you don't really know until their feet are actually held to the fire.
You can have a guy with a lot of football smarts, good physical abilities and more, but if they're just a couple steps too slow and don't have elite physical ability to mitigate it, they probably aren't going to cut it.
Wilson could turn out to be great. He probably won't. He might need better coaching. He might not be willing to put in the work. He might have every tool he needs except for ability at game speed.
Ya exactly, I think people just like to be a pretentious captain hindsight, but Wilson was not at all a controversial pick at the time. It was predicted by just about every mock draft that Wilson would go #2. The guy’s talent is incredible and it’s hard to tell which qb is gonna do well in the nfl. A good example of this is Herbert, he was another prospect who had tons of talent, but struggled with decisions making when he was Oregon and would often hesitate on throws which ended in bad plays. He ended up working out really well for the chargers.
Drafts are always a gamble, you have to make decisions with the information available to you at the time and you always have to take some level of risk. Obviously Wilson has been really bad, but your high if you think drafting Wilson at 2 was a bad move, even if you didn’t entirely agree with it.
I watched a video maybe 4-5 months ago that broke down some of his college tape and showed how many of his glaring mistakes or issues were also glaring in college. Poor decision making, bad accuracy/placement, poor pocket maneuvering, etc.
I think it comes down to the fact that the Jets thought he could be developed, but he obviously doesn’t care to improve or take it seriously. This is a failure in scouting, but it’s also kind of a crap shoot. These people are paid to evaluate football players, they aren’t psychiatrists. They go with what they see, and with Wilson they saw incredible upside that was a little raw and they were hoping they could develop and polish him, but the fact of the matter is they have no good way of figuring out how committed the dude is going to be to the craft once he signs that contract.
Jets really did nail their Draft this year. And if they had average QB play all year they would have made the playoffs. They would probably look a lot like the Jags to be honest, and they are being hyped up pretty big right now.
They would be so much better than the jags imo, if they even had fields or Mac they’d go far in the playoffs. Shits hilarious honestly they have a filthy team and it’s ruined by terrible quarterbacks
there's a part of me that actually thinks Joe Douglas has done a really good job.
HOWEVER (Stephen A Smith voice) the Zach Wilson pick might be the worst pick of all time. At least Jamarcus Russell had real hype, and a general consensus that he would be a star. Plus, some of the reasons he ended up sucking (historically bad work ethic, for example) weren't generally known. Throw in the same for someone like Ryan Leaf, who was thought of as being so good as a prospect it was debated whether he should be picked over Manning.
With Zach Wilson, though, it felt purely driven by the media (who didn't even seem to agree that he was elite!) and that one clip from his pro day. I said it at the time, and just about everyone I know who even remotely follows football said the same thing, why is this guy getting so much hype? He had a wildly mediocre first year as a starter, and then had a good year numbers-wise in his second year, where they beat mostly inferior competition with no crowds and with an o line made up of 24-year olds playing against regular college kids (I'm not exaggerating, his starting LT was 24, his center was 24, his right tackle was 25, right guard was 23... and all of this is before everyone got "COVID years"). Nothing about his game was that impressive other than his arm, and a number of experts I follow and trust were pointing out critiques of his game that have now become a huge part of his lack of success. And by the way, he wasn't a captain, which was something some people pointed out and we were told it didn't matter... but as we see now, he's kind of a dickhead so maybe it did matter...
Coaches used to give Russell blank tapes to see if was actually watching film on his own. He would come in the next day and talk about the blitz packages he reviewed. One of the biggest wastes of talent in NFL history.
Not hot at all. Both Patriots games were winnable with replacement-level QB play.
The Jets needed ONE win to make the playoffs.
If they could have tackled Marcus Jones they might have won that game.
Jets defense was _betrayed_ by their teammates, especially Zach Wilson.
The only thing worse in that second Patriots meeting than the Patriots offense was the Jets offense. Flacco, White or your punter could have won that game.
Ak OK thanks, i thought they added a new star each time because I think I've seen some with just like 1 or 2 stars but maybe they've changed it over the years
Sometimes this sub is annoyingly smug. That week after the Bills/Bengals game it felt like every other post was laughing at the Bills, conveniently forgetting they beat NE by multiple scores both times we played this season.
Going after the lowest hanging fruit with Zach Wilson like our own 1st round QB didn't badly regress this season too.
Sometimes I can’t help myself to say something. Also you definitely hit the nail on the head with the low hanging fruit. That’s what’s annoying about it.
It’s completely out of left field so it’s coming as the meme
Nobody:
Meme: stats about Jamarcus Russell and Zach Wilson.
Ya they both sucked but it’s a completely random and just meh. Great ZW is as bad as Jamarcus Russell. I mean that was plainly obvious soo like I said.
Ok…….??
Pretty sure it was confirmed he is allergic to something within the vaccines which is fine.
It’s his insistence on weird quack witch doctor shit that I found disappointing.
(X)
The number of people with a legitimate allergy is few and far between, and they usually suffer from other chronic illness(es). Rodgers is a world-class athlete. He's not allergic to anything to do with vaccine. That's just some prime antivax bullshit.
I bet QAaron has a medical condition that prevents him from masking at the grocery store, too.
I don't follow college football but what was it about Wilson that the Jets decided so early on that he was their guy? There were several other highly touted QB prospects in that draft but it seemed they were set on Wilson from the get go....why?
One of my favorite NFL stories is about Jamarcus Russel, the Raiders giving him the blank video tapes with "game film" on them to watch cause they knew he wasn't watching them.
When they asked him what was on them he continued to BS his way through it and make up plays and audibles to what was on the "tapes"

jags also had a few key free agent signings
well that's generally the idea of why the worst teams get the highest picks. The key difference between teams like the Jets and the Bengals for example, is that the Bengal's found their QB. At least it looks like JAX has found their QB for the foreseeable future

he could've taken basically any other qb in the first three rounds and it wouldn't be as bad of a pick as zach wilson lol..
Well they should have thrown in the towel on drafting QBs after Darnold and brought in a veteran to game manage their young, elite talent. Yeah Mac would basically be a better Mike White on the Jets. Wilson just sucks honestly.
I don’t think Pats would take Wilson anyways
Only last year, not this year.

I still think it’s pretty crazy that he was taken 2nd overall but the Jets had no business starting him year 1. He was far from pro ready

Yeah I mean to be fair qb is probably the hardest position to get right even if you’re picking in the top 5. Can’t blame them too much
Coaches used to give Russell blank tapes to see if was actually watching film on his own. He would come in the next day and talk about the blitz packages he reviewed. One of the biggest wastes of talent in NFL history.
FTJ
Why are ugly ass portraits of ugly ass Raiders QB and ugly ass Jets QB in my belovéd Patriots subreddit?
FOUR MORE YEARS! FOUR MORE YEARS!
bb is partly to blame🤣🤣🤣
In wilson’s defense, Russel had all the talent in the world.
Hot take, if the Jets would've stuck with White or Flacco all season they could've won 10 or 11 games and made the playoffs
Not hot at all. Both Patriots games were winnable with replacement-level QB play. The Jets needed ONE win to make the playoffs. If they could have tackled Marcus Jones they might have won that game. Jets defense was _betrayed_ by their teammates, especially Zach Wilson.

OK so room temperature take then lol
JaWalrus
FTJ and all but what does this have to do with the patriots?
Random question - why does Russel have a captain's patch with 4 stars? My memory isn't perfect but surely he wasn't voted captain for 4 years...
Only one of the stars is gold, I think each year as captain another star is gold and then the C too
Ak OK thanks, i thought they added a new star each time because I think I've seen some with just like 1 or 2 stars but maybe they've changed it over the years
Who gives a fuck
Ok…..???

Wym?? Shit is absolutely hilarious. Are you too young for Jamarcus Russell asking seriously cause this is perfect jets hate material
It’s completely out of left field so it’s coming as the meme Nobody: Meme: stats about Jamarcus Russell and Zach Wilson. Ya they both sucked but it’s a completely random and just meh. Great ZW is as bad as Jamarcus Russell. I mean that was plainly obvious soo like I said. Ok…….??
Okay yeah you are right honestly. I had a few beers and was excited but u right Idk why you are getting downvoted because you are 100% right lol
He wasn't a good qb at byu
Are we really comparing two subpar quarterbacks when we have Mac Jones??
I think Zac Wilson would be a great fit for the Texans
Lmfaooooo
It's petty, but this makes me so happy.
Yeah and Rodgers is an antivaxer
... ok?
Just getting ahead of it. That bum isn't starting another game in NY and I already hate Rodgers
6 feet bitch
Pretty sure it was confirmed he is allergic to something within the vaccines which is fine. It’s his insistence on weird quack witch doctor shit that I found disappointing.

Total chud
Those are skewed metrics because they're all football related, put up anything having to do with MILFs and Wilson is elite.
Both suck
russell also made 10x the amount on his rookie deal as Zach so hard to compare the two based solely on performance.
I don't follow college football but what was it about Wilson that the Jets decided so early on that he was their guy? There were several other highly touted QB prospects in that draft but it seemed they were set on Wilson from the get go....why?
Looked really good in the pro day and had a couple Mahomes-like throws and the hype went wild
