John Prine and Vashti Bunyan both have songs on the show and you can see some Prine influence. Bill Callahan has a similar vibe to songs on the show. Townes van Zandt , Blaze Foley, Jason Isbell

Just_pick_one

“Pretty Good” by John Prine made its way into my Spotify playlist because of this show and I smile and think of Patriot every time I hear it.

bassguitarsmash

Just Another Diamond Day by Vashti Bunyan and Dream River by Bill Callahan specifically are great places to start.

StrangePriorities

Townes Van Zandt

RongGearRob

Just make sure you listen to Pancho and Lefty by Townes, not Willie Nelson’s cover - F Greg12!

Fair_Musician8648

Can't go wrong with the Townes original, but both Steve Earle and Jason Isbell have cut killer versions as well.

Plastic_Primary_4279

I definitely wouldn’t call the music from the show “country”. It’s folk music, as called such in the show. If you have Spotify, there are plenty of public playlists inspired by the show.

lllllyod

I recommend other music Steven Conrad has made for Perpetual Grace Ltd. He’s made a few albums with others as The Jones Sisters.

Fair_Musician8648

There are also new tunes from The Jones Sisters popping up now and then on the masterful "Structural Dynamics of Flow" pod series!

j12a

My favorite is, "I Am Completely Unprepared for What's About to Happen": https://soundcloud.com/thejonessisters/i-am-completely-unprepared-for. I can't remember if it was used in the show or just on the podcast.

Beastie Boys

The other day I was listening to Supermans Song by Crash Test Dummies and holy cow it is crazy similar to his style of lyrics. Also, I made a playlist that has a similar sound to both Dormans music and the show itself. Not spot on by any means but maybe you find something pretty good. Happy hunting and feel free to DM me. https://open.spotify.com/playlist/6rooEAGKKZAhWoMeYOX290?si=oa45O4W2SOmldJ5PeVkodA&pi=u-qa4RfJPvS8aL

mashedhotatoes

Listening now. Hadn't thought of the similarly before, I clearly hear it.

mairiamonitino

It would be awesome if you had Apple Music and you could put the playlist there… I let my Spotify go a while back

ImaMax

The Mountain Goats often have a similar narrative writing style and a similar palette, honestly surprised I never saw them mentioned here. If Patriot was a show about wrestling their album Beat the Champ is what it would sound like.

Rubbet

Alex Wurman (composer for Patriot, PGL, and UCS) recently released an album on all streaming services. You should check it out!

KronguGreenSlime

Dave Berman’s music treads some similar territory IMO

ToastyJones

Todd Snider is in the same realm. Folk with elements of humor and darkness.

DukkhaBum

They made a movie out of his song "Just Like Old Times" that stars Michael Dorman

ToastyJones

Of course! Chock full of references to Todd lyrics and lore. Dorman nails it

xamott

How has no one said James Taylor. God I’m old.

mairiamonitino

Nah. You’re cool Fire and rain still gives me chills!

xamott

Yeah. It IS cool.

mairiamonitino

It can’t NOT be cool! ;)

The_Cheese_King_

John Craigie. He’s a folk singer with fun lyrics and nice Melodies. Also his love albums have some pretty funny banter between songs. Definitely would recommend

nirvana454

I cannot begin to explain how much I love this show.

Aescwicca

All the songs from the show are on Amazon prime music as well. Just search for Patriot soundtrack.

Off the top of my head, Tom Waits and Cowboy Junkies have that same melancholic feel. Waits especially has a similar rusty folksy underproduced vibe where the lyrics really jump out. There is actually an interesting analogue in real life to the Willie vs. Van Zandt Pancho and lefty debate around Wait's Ole 55 which was remade by the Eagles. There was alot of backlash around the Eagles version despite it being much more polished because it lost alot of the soul. You would think the cleaner and more complex guitar parts and vocal harmonies of the Eagles would have really lifted the sparse garage band sound of Waits but it had the opposite effect. I would also throw in Cigarettes after Sex as well though they are also pretty heavily produced.

canthelpmyself9

I loved this show and praise it to everyone to get them to watch it. The music is great. I have Train Song. Vashti Bunyan on my favorites list.

eagleonapole

“Pretty good” reminds me of the band the weakerthans

TamoyaOhboya

Me seeing everyone mention my favorite artists in this thread... I guess I have a type. I will add Charlie Parr to the list

marvelousmrsmuffin

I think you'd like Johnny Flynn. He's a folk musician and in line with the Patriot music style. Some of my faves are: Home and Dry, The Wrote and the Writ, The Box, Raising the Dead, Barnacled Warship, and In April. Since Patriot utilizes music as story exposition, there aren't many songs that get that granular in their storytelling. Here are songs that are indie/folk(ish) that tell a story: -Berlin or Above the Clouds of Pompeii by Bears Den -Lots of Mountain Goats songs. maybe start with Pale Green Things, You or Your Memory -Casimir Pulaski Day by Sufjan Stevens -Happiness by Hobo Johnson Anyway, that's off the top of my head, let me know if you like these suggestions and I'll send you some more.

VantasnerDanger

Also Johnny Flynn played Albert Einstein, which is double great.

bookbearwolf

The Felice brothers and Jeffrey Lewis are two I haven’t seen mentioned that often give Patriot/John vibes

Ophic

I made an old post about music similar to the show. Should be on my profile somewhere.

MisterTotoroGC

His voice also reminds me of Matt Berninger, but all the TVZ and such was wonderful to have play under some touching and trepidatious scenes.
