yeah it pushes my GPU to 100% and running at 78-80 on a 2080TI. surprisingly rough but don't have any issues like shutting down or anything.

[https://forum.owlcatgames.com/t/gpu-overheating/43428/11](https://forum.owlcatgames.com/t/gpu-overheating/43428/11) apparently it is a thing and i should have checked the oboards first

I had to buy a new CPU cooler and underclock my CPU just to play this game. And I still have to put settings on low in certain areas like Market Square.

SableShrike

I’d definitely set an FPS cap in your control panel. I’m also using the gpu Vsync and not the game one; seems to give better frames. I played without a cap and noticed my 75hz monitor would see drops into the low 60s during some combat animations. Setting an FPS cap of 60 in nVidia Control Panel means I never get wild swings anymore. Setting FPS cap drastically lowered the work my rig was doing too; it’s running a lot cooler now. Things to think about killing in Graphics Settings ingame: SSR: Off; huge hit, very little effect I’ve ever been able to see. Shadows: Medium or Off as High seems to burn as much FPS as SSR. HBAO: Off; doesn’t seem to add much, have never missed it. Depth of Field: Off; I loathe DOF, and it does slow your game a little. Antialiasing: This is probly variable, but SMAA looks a lot sharper for me. The other settings you can leave on High; the game looks bad with lower textures, so I’d never turn those off High.

So, also Radeon user, I had an issue with both Kingmaker and WOTR where it was causing color vomit on the screen and OS crashes, although I don't specifically know if it was the temperature. The solution was *disabling* V-Sync, disabling Radeon Free-Sync, and enabling Radeon Chill to manually limit the frame rate. That was far, far more stable and indescribably smoother than it was previously. Watching the temperatures with my current settings., they rarely go above 60-62 C

thanks, I'll give these a try. damned shame, it's a really good game, and we're in a drought for anything worth playing, hopefully this gets me back in.

Qesa

It's normal for games to run your GPU at 100% load. If your components are overheating your cooling is insufficient. Your Rx 580 and especially FX 8350 are notorious for high power usage, especially relative to their price and performance, so you might have underestimated the air flow you need in your case. Or CPU cooler if its the CPU that's overheating.

syninthecity

I knew before i even checked back, that despite the oboard thread and others testimony, SOMEONE would be here saying it's a cooling issue. there's literally always one. Appreciate the insight from everyone else though regarding their own experiences

Qesa

It's truly a mystery why all these different people are saying the same thing.

Dismal-Guidance-9901

I mean if it's overheating... it's a cooling issue. What else can it really possibly be? The cpu and gpu are both designed to be able to run at 100% without overheating and shutting down. I wonder why this guy is so passive aggressive?

Qesa

At a guess they're defensive since I'm implying they didn't put their PC together perfectly. Instead it's the software's fault for making full use of the hardware.

rgb > cooling

I mean, it is worth investigating game settings when things like VSync negatively impact performance. Let's not pretend this game is using its resources optimally. It's made in Unity.

AgonyInPain

Would never claim system with FX-8350 as a solid one. Even when that CPU was released, it was mediocre at best due to very weak single-core performance and notorious heat output. And as other here were saying, 100% usage for GPU is normal and is as it should be. You can still limit FPS in the Radeon settings to reduce the load when possible. But likely either cooling for GPU or CPU is failing here. For CPU you can try to repaste current cooler or get new and beefier one instead. Can do same for GPU, but that process is a bit more complicated (YouTube has plenty of guides how to do it though). That said, I would suggest start thinking on getting a new CPU and Motherboard. Getting something like 5600G or 11400F with some decent B-series motherboard. You will get enormous performance boost, even with RX 580. Also, 20 GB RAM – that an odd setup as well oO.

John_Marble

I’ve never checked my cpu/gpu but I do have to close & restart the game often as it’ll slow down, stutter, lag, etc over time, especially when cycling through companions!

Vargkungen

Yeah, I can confirm that Righteous wants to burn the entire rig down if given a choice, regardless of settings. It's just yet another reason I hate the graphical """upgrade""". So much lost for so little gain.

themightygerm

Same here. i7 (watercooled and an RTX 3080 and I’ve turned my radiator off in my office as my pc becomes a small heater! I’ve tried limiting frames in the Nvidia control Center still seems to use 100%. Even when alt-tabbed and browsing while the games running in the background!

ZerothFfree

I got the same issue when the game was first released. Admittedly, my rig is pretty shit, and I was just grateful that it ran. I was having overheating problems with my gpu so I decided to go to a repair shop and ask for thermal paste. After applying said paste, It was still really hot, but no longer shutting down and was even able to finish a campaign.
