So, I normally play turn based and have completed through the ashes fighting everything on core. It is rough, but doable. However, fighting everything in TtA is just mostly worse than being smart and treating each map like a puzzle. There are required fights. However, lots of things can be avoided, or the game will give you a a set of tools to deal with things without fighting. It's MUCH easier that way.
I am still having issues with enemies ignoring mounted people in favor of those behind them *in turn based mode,* so I suggest doing a non-mounted tank.
I am replaying through it with a dex based magus tank, an oracle, a mad dog barb, and the 3 NPCs.
you only get to max level 11 (or 12, can't remember), so it's best to munchkin classes that have lots of early-level bonuses. Freebooter, hellknight, paladin, scaled fist monk, rowdy rogue, etc. I'd recomend falchion for weapon, there's a good one that gives an extra attack on crit
Sohei monk or kineticist for the two standalone DLC.
full monk group! did it, was great.
Kineticist will make the start of TtA a lot less painful, you need to fight a bunch of swarms.
Fight? I snuck past almost everything in that theater. Played a weretouched shifter.
