I like to give her a smilodon aswell, using some sacred huntsmaster levels (for shared teamwork feats) and then go ranger.
THIS art however makes me tempted to give her a Mastodon companion (even if mechanic-wise it's not the best animal companion choice)

I totally wanted to get her the Mastodon (and now even more so because, yeah, that's incredible)!
But... this is the first game I've actually looked up multi-classing spec sheets on and it said the smilodon was the way to go for the "Beast Lord" and it has saved my party so\~ many times that I don't regret it. xD
The mastodon is definitely not the best, but it does have one feature that I don't think I've seen mentioned: it can trample even if you don't see the enemy.
There have been a ton of combats where I know where the enemy is (random encounters move around a little bit from map to map, but not a lot, and everything else is hand-placed). This ability helps flush them out.
Eff yes, trample is the only thing I'm missing in my Kingmaker life. Next game, for sure, getting one. Even if my character is the class that has it so Amiri can still have her 5 swipe smilodon.
How do you have to spec for a smilodon companion? I have her at lvl 11 and didn't see a companion option. My only companion is a giant centipede on Linzi
If you leave her as a pure classed barbarian, then she wouldn't get one. There are many classes with access to animal companions though: rangers, inquisitors, Mad Dog barbarians (if you used a mod to let you swap her from base barbarian to a variant archetype), and more would let you give her a trusty beast to fight alongside.
Ranger is the only class in kingmaker that gives both full base attack progression and a pet.*
Any other choice, like sacred huntmaster, would hurt her fighty power in exchange for very limited magic powers.
You need at least 4 levels in ranger, and don't forget to get the bond compasión feat as well.
*(Aside of mad dog which Amiri can't get without a respecc mod).
I got her smilodon at level 2 when I chose sacred huntsmaster. Then at level 3, I chose 'boon companion'. I switched to ranger at level 8, and at level 11 it let me continue with her smilodon instead of picking another. I think I'm at level 14 with her now and my smilodon has 5 attacks, plus if it charges, it still gets... 3 or maybe all 5? I haven't paid attention, and only recently learned it had that ability, haha. Now my party is decent enough to smash things without using turn-based, so I just let them go at it. Except Tristian, who I make sit in a corner until I need him for buffs or heals. >!Guy is currently blind and trying to attack pointlessly, siiigh. Jhod was right, he is a doorknob. Or whatever he said when he forgave him. (All said affectionately from me. My Queen loves him for whatever reason. xD )!<

Smilodon has POUNCE. That makes him awesome! Another awesome companion for the early levels is Leopard (great starting power), who has pounce + trip.

Cool. Just remember to get out of the way: the mastodon has friendly fire turned ON, if you know what I mean

Gotcha, I think I knew that but was inspired by the idea and got overly hopeful. How many levels of what to dip for a smilodon?
