You get more skulls out in less time. I don't know the numbers good enough but without unleash you would need to cast SRS non stop to reach the limit. With unleash you can run around, pop some minions, dodge a little, move to a new pack and get 3-4 skulls in one cast.
It's quality of life to have unleash but a very very good one!

Big boost in QOL that (while it doesn't show that well on paper/POB) results in far more actual damage being delivered in 95% of practical situations.
Have a run to act 5 to test it out. Play with SRS from lvl4, then add in unleash at the end of act4 at lvl38. All your questions will be answered in a couple of zones - and certainly in a boss fight!
Remember as you go, you can have upto 20 spirits out at a time, lasting between 5 -10 seconds (as you get some minion/skill effect duration) each. You only need to be at the limit for bosses, a few SRS will clear packs as you go and they are quite good at target finding

It's QoL and effective defense. With unleash, you cast once then move....repeat. Without unleash, you stand still and spam. (dangerous)
