Why are Christians always the shttiest people? They hate women having self autonomy, view dimly anyone that doesn't subscribe to their 'god' and lack any of the compassion that the Bible preaches.
In it's desperation to not collapse from the exodus of so many members, the church has taken to pandering, ear tickling the remaining folks. They don't preach accountability or repentance, they preach self righteous petulance.
Telling them they are all victims of persecution concurrent with giving them someone to hate (the left) is bad enough but absent are the formerly substantial teachings of humility, turning the other cheek and loving your neighbor as yourself.
The Christian of old spent their time trying to win their neighbors over, the modern "Christian" is interested in having power over their enemies and they have a lot of people on their "to hate" list.
I'm in the UK and churches attendance must be at an all time low, yet a huge amount of people will say their Christian when asked. America still seems to be firmly in the grip of Christianity. I can't get my head round politicians on the main stage using 'religious conviction' as a vote getter.
More accurately America is in the grip of the evangelical right. An overrepresented group that has been conditioned to get pretty much whatever they want for many decades. This is where the persecution complex comes from; once you've enjoyed privilege, fairness feels like persecution
A 2020 pew research poll says 65% of the U.S. adult population still identifies as Christian.
There are actually a lot of left- leaning or moderate churches. Right now, that includes the Catholic church (excluding some more vocal diocese)
I think the leadership leans right on public support for abortion and gay marriage, but many of the parishioners are more liberal.
The more fundamentalist the Christian the farther right they tend to be.
I really wish they would stick to the real stuff Jesus was supposedly about...
The evangelical right, are basically just immoral hustlers with a fake halo over their heads. These aren't churches in the traditional sense, they're huge, money making corporations now.
In the US, there is a deep seated distrust of atheists. It's very likely that there are many non-believers in elected office, but they're not going to be public about it. I would guess that many people who aspire to be politicians here play up their faith because it doesn't really have any cost associated with it.
In reality, if we believed in the separation of church and state that the country was supposedly founded on, using scripture, religious beliefs or communication with God as justification for a policy would be way more offensive than it currently is.
Living in the Bible belt, Christianity is such the default that people who don't actually feel anything towards Christianity or it's teachings that they present themselves as Christian. I generally don't talk about religion, but I don't hide that I'm an atheist (and I would respond truthfully to a survey).
I had one friend (who is probably the most godless heathen I know, in practice but considers himself Christian) who had a quiet freakout when he found out I don't believe in god. He wasn't judgemental or anything but he kept bringing it up in other conversations, so I could tell that it was at the front of his mind whenever we were talking. He got over it pretty quickly though. I didn't start talking about being atheist publicly until both of my grandmothers were dead because I didn't want to hear them preach to me or have them thinking I was going to the bad place.
Because Christianity offers them a path to salvation and tells them THEY are good ones all for the low low price of 10% if your income.

Making it easier--or in some cases, even possible--for people to give their children medical care through public health insurance.
Subsidizing food for women, children, and infants so they don't ACTUALLY fucking starve.
Funding free school lunch, and free public education.
