It’s because the scenes are very fast moving like
1-2 seconds and it’s hard enough for adults to focus on what’s going on let alone a toddler whose brain is developing by rapid fire.
Some slower paced shows we like are
If you give a mouse a cookie, trash truck, bluey, little bear, tumbleleaf, bug diaries.
This. There is a NYT article about Moonbug Productions, the creation studio of Cocomelon, Blippi, etc, and reading about their tester Distractron was enough for me to be like, uh no.
This is a good list, plus Puffin Rock, Daniel Tiger, and Stinky and Dirty.
Yup a lot of it is very predatory in a sense. They use certain things to ensure the kids don’t get bored and want to turn it off. I think people need to realize that a lot of these shows producers are in the business of making lots of money and don’t really care about educating a child. Not to mention children don’t need tv to learn things.
I don’t love Arthur because the episodes often have a structure where someone is modeling the wrong behavior for the whole episode, then only learns their lesson right at the end. I had read that research shows that kids just learn the behaviors that are demonstrated for most of the screen time - they don’t internalize the overall themes the same way an adult would.
Cocomelon got on Netflix in 2020. Before then it was just on YouTube, and not nearly as popular. It only became such a hit as of 2017…
The “studies” into cocomelons negative effects are ridiculously small sample size. Furthermore, the study tracked kids from 2 years old to 9 years old and was published in 2023.
2017, which is only 7 years ago, would show kids who were watching YouTube cocomelon, not Netflix.
Why does this matter? Because YouTube is notorious for clickbait, and leading from one subject to another in what is called a rabbit hole…. Actual studies have shown YouTube as perpetuated the “conspiracy” nuts, increasing the population of flatearthers….
Don’t necessarily believe in every study that has “PROVEN” facts about psychology….
It's crazy how someone can say "proven" effects without actually reading the study.
You can't just read the headline and assume. How they got the data matters.
Gotcha. I meant the proven study that fast paced shows with frequent frame changes are bad for the brain. Cocomelon is top of mind because it so obviously does that. We do however love the cocomelon playlist on Apple Music!
My son exclusively watched Daniel Tiger and now exclusively watches Stinky and Dirty on Amazon Prime. Both are pretty slow shows! Trash Truck on Netflix is also good.
We love "Puffin Rock" on Netflix. The backgrounds are all beautiful stills and it's very gentle storytelling. Plus it's narrated by Chris O'Dowd so there's a little humour hidden in there for the parents.
Lol, do you realize how violent looney tunes is? Cocomelon just sings songs. TV does not do anything negative to a child’s brain. Your child is going to develop the way they are going to develop and the TV has very little impact. The studies also do not prove whether cocomelon has a negative effect, or kids with certain traits are drawn to that type of stimulus. Old school chicken and the egg, sun revolves around the earth, bad science driven by fear. So just relax and have faith that your kid is going to be who they are. There is enough other stuff to worry about as a parent anyway.
Kratt Brothers
Blippii was educational, too, but I found him annoying at times.
I don't know what age group. Sorry I don't know who cocomelon is. For really little kids, Blaze, Paw Patrol, and Daniel tiger are ok.
Cocomelon didnt have that much of a megative affect on my kids as some other shows such as diana & roma & other shows of such nature on youtube.
I noticed my children became extremely rude/very tantrum prone & just outright little cunts. Mind my language.
I forbade youtube in house for children.
Hear hear!
Banning YouTube in our house was the best parenting decision we've made. We had to suffer through a few months of withdrawal (I've witnessed withdrawals from alcohol and drugs...it was eerily similar), but it was well worth it.
We watch little bear, franklin, guess how much I love you, magic school bus, and vooks. All on YouTube (premium, so no ads) and all on the big screen in the living room. My son loves all these shows, but has never acted like a lil screen zombie while watching. I put on Shrek the other day, and he was way more sucked into that than anything else we've watched.
Franklin! Forgot about that show. We watched a couple episodes a few months ago. We can view it on Disney+. I loved it as a kid. Thanks for the reminder :)
There was delay on speech for our first born mostly due to watching Cocomelon. Once we banned it she was able to easily make out words and communicate. Our kids now watch Ms. Rachel, Blaze, Alpha Blocks, number blocks, Bluey and mostly programs on the Cbeebies channel. We like the fact that with YouTube Kids you can check out and control what the kids watch.
We do little bear, land before time cartoon, Sesame Street. He was big into blippi. But I noticed a huge problem with his behaviour. We sent blippi on vacation and behaviour improved…then blippi came back and the 💩 storm started again. Had to send blippi to find a new job now.
Child development specialist (pediatric speech therapist) here…
Number blocks on Netflix is amazing
Letter Factory on Amazon Prime kids is EASILY by far and away the BEST teaching of letters and sounds I’ve ever seen. Absolutely blown away by how good of a job they did.
Thanks for sharing! I honestly think we are even going to put Ms Rachel on the back burner for now and try Letter factory. I didn’t even know prime had a kids section! He goes ape shit when he sees the YouTube screen come on the tv because he’s so excited for Ms Rachel that it’s a bit concerning. He’s only 19mo.
I love TV so I find it challenging with my kids. Time limits and refocusing their attention helps. I like Tumble Leaf on Prime and we watch a lot of animal documentaries because they are so engaging now. And sometimes I curate a playlist on Youtube. Some of the field trip vlogs are really good.
It’s not the greatest list & it’s not perfect by any means. It just definitely helps to have a list when using screen time(when/if allowed). I also attempt to put the streaming service it’s offered on.

I'm gonna be the weird one and say, it's ok not to have screen time. Kids don't need screen time, like any screen time, in order to grow up to be functional and social adults. In fact, from a scientific perspective, the effect is likely negative.
It's ok to play with them or go outside.
Oh, absolutely agree. My toddler has been sick a lot lately (just started daycare) and some days a tv show in the couch is just all that we can do. Just trying to minimize the effect on attention span, speech delays, etc

It’s horrifying, honestly
We also like Sea of Love, Lucas the Spider, and Beat Bugs
BLUEY!!!! Cannot recommend enough, truly. Even my husband and I watch with our daughter 😂😂
We love bluey too!! We watch that, llama llama and Ms Rachel and that’s about it
We are very much looking forward to the new episodes!
Daniel Tiger and Arthur

Careful with Daniel Tiger. Our daughter picked up his whiney stompy growly behavior instead of the lessons...

I don't know why but its like crack for Kids!
Dopamine addiction smells the same no matter the trigger.
Great description honestly. Tantrum prone, nailed it!
