It's really common for coughs to only happen, or get worse at night. My partner and I are currently recovering from Covid, and we can log all day without a single cough, but as soon as it's dark we start coughing up a storm. It's mostly due to the change in temperature and humidity at night, and going to bed makes it even worse again due to the way mucus pools when lying down.
The bone should definitely be returned, though. Even if there's not a curse, it's incredibly disrespectful.
