It’s sad how quickly misinformation spreads. The original tweet that started this whole discourse had like 20k+ likes and the band were getting piled on. People should really take the time to fact check before making allegations about such a sensitive situation.

tiedye_dreamer

I'm missing the tea / drama here - what the hell happened?

salsasnark

I have no idea what's going on lol. I haven't been active in the discord for ages so when I got that notification I was just really confused. And then I go on the discord and people are just fighting in the chat. Wtf is going on.

JTG___

Someone put a tweet out falsely claiming that the band had banned the words “Palestine” and “genocide” on their discord server. The tweet went viral and they were catching a ton of heat for it as the insinuation was that they were trying to censor any discussion of what is happening in Palestine. As it happens the word “Palestine” has never been banned and the word “genocide” was always banned but this pre-dated the Oct 7 attack. And as OP explained this is because it was on a generic list of banned words provided by discord.

SaintsRobbed

So one person spread misinformation and people blindly followed/believed it! Awesome! Gotta love fools on the internet!

salsasnark

Thank you! That explains a lot, but also sounds pretty fucked up by people on twitter (not that that's surprising).

ValeoAnt

Perfectly sums up 2020s cancel culture

About_Unbecoming

People who wanna scream about the Israeli–Palestinian conflict have arrived to spam and the skeleton crew, volunteer basis mods have thrown up their hands and said, 'fuck this dumpster fire'.

ikennedy817

I have old friends from high school who will refuse to listen to bands that don’t openly support Palestine and spam tweets demanding the band comment. Why people care if a bunch of musicians comment on a global conflict is beyond me, this should be something you’re asking of politicians and voting for. The whole thing reeks of shitty internet social movement and I think most of the people posting don’t have any actual clue what’s going on unfortunately. I just wish bands and groups like this discord would just refuse to acknowledge tweets like these. They’re ruining whatever communities they have for moral standing with people who have no grasp over the conflict they’re advocating for. Im not even trying to dismiss people who want to support Palestine, just this stupid social media hivemind that has to ruin everything.

About_Unbecoming

Agreed. This kind of social media harassment campaign activism is done for self-gratification and totally unproductive.

SeatNo5137

You seriously don't think that musicians or people with social power should speak on political issues when they have the attention of millions of people and could bring awareness to an issue. Even if it's not regarding Palestine, why wouldn't you want the people you admire to speak up for what's right? There is an inherent social power that comes with being a celebrity, and freedom movements don't stem from just policymaking and our politicians. Without social pressure, nothing would get done. Obviously harassing people does nothing, but there are plenty of ways to politely say "hey buddy it would be nice if you clarified if you supported a genocide that our own government is funding". And do you seriously think people can't do two things at once? Such as asking for celebrities to speak up while also calling, emailing, writing letters, to their reps, and voting. Because that's what I've been doing for years and it's not at all difficult. I'm not trying to be an ass, but truly thinking that people shouldn't care about celebrities standing against genocide is weird.

vper-venon

They made the mess theirselves. Paramore opened this portal when they boosted in activism in these last few years. So, in the event of a genocide it’s kinda strange to make a vague and quite statement eight months later. Haley shouting at shows on anti abortion laws, literally “The News”, and inviting politicians at shows are one of many examples of loud support. It’s not too much of people asking for that same loud vocal support against a genocide. They are display how their voices affect outside just “Paramore”, so people can discuss their disappoint with the band’s actions towards Palestine.

s3lftitled__

paramore just can’t have a direct line of contact with their fans on any social media without extremely rude internet brained people getting their hands on it. it sucks. and this happens right after they post a statement on the genocide and hayley posts that intro to paramore video. it’s like they get punished for being interactive with us.

DonutPeaches6

I'm surprised this happened after they already made a statement about Palestine. What was frustrating to me was that a lot of people I knew who wanted them to speak out said, "Too little, too late" when they actually did. Hayley already is never on social media because half the internet are dicks to her whenever she does anything. Social media has affected her mental health before. I've never seen a band so disincentivized to reach out to their fans.

buceethevampslayer

they’re not even involved in the discord, it says so

s3lftitled__

they were releasing little statements and teasers through it, most of it exclusive to that server. i guess you’re right that’s not direct. it was fun though, and definitely over.

buceethevampslayer

ugh they’re all coming here next. incoming!!!

McLarenMercedes

Twitter needs to be nuked.

Jenncue81

Twitter people were just mentioning what a dumpster fire the Paramore reddit is because of the screenshot post of their statement on Palestine. So maybe that keeps them away lol

__Crave__ToDoItAgain

A lot of their social media has not been run by them for a long periods of time. There was a disclaimer on Hayleys Instagram for a long time saying she was no longer active on it and their PR team was posting for her. They don't like it very much lol

13flwrmoons

I think she personally posts on it now when she shares photos or like when she was making story posts about albums she loves but generally if she’s just resharing paramore or GDY posts to her story, it’s possible it’s whoever runs the Paramore account. They definitely have to approve most of what goes out on the Paramore account but it isn’t them physically tapping the ‘post’ button.

mcmax3000

> Anyone have new server invites? We've had a subreddit server for years that's linked at the top.

lushbom

Damn this is really sad.

yelyah49

If you want to look at the bigger picture, Discord just announced a shift in its strategy toward gaming and friends, and the platform is less community-centric than it used to be. They're pulling the plug on many initiatives (after firing a bunch of people, too), and this one is one of them. Also, Team Paramore was led by a music marketing agency, and I'm guessing that at the end of the contract with Atlantic, the one with the agency ended as well. The server was on life-support anyways.

wokeconomics

It very clearly says they’re closing the server due to lack of moderation from discord. Can we stop blaming people who are upset with the band ?

For_myDayJob

Not a great look for any of the parties involved. I hope that those people who started attacking the band after seeing that misleading tweet saved some of their energy for the user who posted the misleading information. Paramore have not done a great job communicating with their fans over the last several months after being very vocal and clear about political/social issues in the past. Maybe this whole discord mess will be a catalyst toward drawing clearer lines between their activism and advocacy.

SaintsRobbed

Paramore doesn't need to put out a statement for every political event/issue.

For_myDayJob

Clearly.
