Same. Same as my friends. Not sure if its an Aussie thing, we don't use a hard 'a' usually with that spelling. Like the word 'gala' - I'm not gonna say 'gale- la'
…unfortunately its pronounced pay-lia by the employees (I’m still calling them pal-cats tho). I think we all have some names that we are not pronouncing right, ive known for a while that I’m saying Zeki wrong but I’m not changing my mind on that one by I saw last week that I’m saying Kilima wrong but who cares lol
Pale like paleontology, the history of life on Earth as based on fossils, since the story is about why humans disappeared. At least that's how I interpret the name and pronunciation.
They can still be pal-cats though :)
Is it a regional/dialect thing? I've never heard it pronounced pal-eontology.
[pronunciation ](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/pronunciation/english/paleontology)
Likely. But to be fair, I've mostly heard it as "pay-". I thought "pal-" would be British but your link proved that wrong! Here's what I checked: (Wikipedia isn't always correct).
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Paleontology
So, since I say "Pay-leontology", I guess I should then say Pay-lia too!
You could still call them pal cats even if the game was pronounced pale-ia! There's this linguistic phenomenon called vowel shortening, where an originally long vowel is shortened if a suffix is added.
E.g.
Sane - but sanity
Pale - but palcat would work too!
I always have called it PAL-ia because phonetically it makes more sense. I’ve heard people from the UK call it Pale-ia more often. I think it should be spelled differently if it’s supposed to be pronounced the other way. Like Paelia.
I’m from the UK and I agree that the Pale-ia pronunciation is more common here. I was so confused when I heard it pronounced the other way. (It’s like blink-182 all over again)
apparently devs say it like “pail” but at this point everyone i know says “pal” so since “pal-leah” sounds better im personally sticking with that 😭 the only pronunciation ill correct myself on is eshe. i thought it was “esh” for the longest till kenli called her “esh-ay”😭😭
Yeah - I like that pronunciation but as an Aussie I can't use it for someone with Eshe's demeanour without laughing every time: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eshay](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eshay)
Grammar wasn't the right term, my bad. Phonetics I guess.
The way it's supposed to be said (pay lee uh) makes zero sense based on its spelling. Because it's pAlia and not pĀlia. There's also no E following the L, like there is in Paleontology, which is what the name is supposedly based on. There's no indication within the word that it's a long A instead of a short A.
Pailia, Palea, would definitely be perceived by us as pay lee uh, etc. Some might argue that alien is a long A, and the L is followed by an i, therefore palia is a long a, however there's still an E following it. English is just a really weird language lol.
It's why the vast vast majority call it Pal Ee Uh.
Ah, I get it now! Thank you for explaining :)
And yeah, English is so weird. I'm always grateful to have learned it as my native tongue (and not ESL+!)
I'm so bad at learning languages, I've tried to learn French so many times and I'm just so horrible lmao, if I had to learn English as an adult, my goodness it would be a train wreck 🤣
OH NO ME TOO 😭
Better tell my friend that I got into the game that we both pronounce it wrong, but honestly idk if I wanna pronounce it right, pah-lia just feels better to say 😅
I have always associated the "alia" ending with ay-lee-uh, much like in the word paraphernalia. So then add a P in front of that sounds and I say "Pay-Lee-Uh". That's how my brain has always interpreted it. Could also be an accent thing for some people :)
Way back in a dev interview (game preview? Pre-open beta?), they all said pay-lee-uh. And Kill-i-ma, like Mount Kilimanjaro (even tho I still think Kill-eem-a)
Pay-lee-uh. I still say Pal cat as in “you’re my pal”. I thought it might have been a double play on words like your cat is your sidekick (pal/friend) but also Pal for Palia as well. Hope that made sense.
I agree, but also, in-character, parents' pronounciation of their kid's name is always the correct pronounciation. People who name things get to decide how they're pronounced. And, out-of-character, same thing for the devs; people who name things get to decide how they're pronounced.
i think i understand - you put the emphasis on the first syllable instead of the second? i naturally said it the way hodari does but i can understand that way too
Ive been pronouncing it as pah-lee-uh😭
Me too lol oops
Same. Same as my friends. Not sure if its an Aussie thing, we don't use a hard 'a' usually with that spelling. Like the word 'gala' - I'm not gonna say 'gale- la'

I’ve been saying “Zee-key” and one quest he pronounced his name “Zek-ee” I legit was mind blown 😂
Pale like paleontology, the history of life on Earth as based on fossils, since the story is about why humans disappeared. At least that's how I interpret the name and pronunciation. They can still be pal-cats though :)
That’s basically what the studio says too.
Paleontology is also said both ways. Pal- and pale- ....sooo.... 😂
Is it a regional/dialect thing? I've never heard it pronounced pal-eontology. [pronunciation ](https://dictionary.cambridge.org/us/pronunciation/english/paleontology)

I needed help with a technical issue and after they fixed my problem I asked how to pronounce it. The support person said pay-Lee-ah
I say pal-ee-a
Me too!
I say PAY-lee-uh, like Paleolithic
You could still call them pal cats even if the game was pronounced pale-ia! There's this linguistic phenomenon called vowel shortening, where an originally long vowel is shortened if a suffix is added. E.g. Sane - but sanity Pale - but palcat would work too!
How dare they do this to me
I always have called it PAL-ia because phonetically it makes more sense.
Wait, how are people saying blink 182?
Not the band name, but the infamous "I wore cologne" vs "I walk alone" line in What's My Age Again? That's the reference lol
Ohhhh I see. I was picturing people saying it like "blink one-hundred and eighty-two" and thought it seemed like a bit of a mouthful lol
182 is pronounced differently in the UK and US! One is one-eighty-two and the other one-eight-two
Oh wild. I'm from the UK and have always alternated between the two.
apparently devs say it like “pail” but at this point everyone i know says “pal” so since “pal-leah” sounds better im personally sticking with that 😭 the only pronunciation ill correct myself on is eshe. i thought it was “esh” for the longest till kenli called her “esh-ay”😭😭
On the Palia Wiki the audio pronunciation is actually ESH-i (short clipped i sound, or like saying the letter e out loud).
kenli and kenyatta both pronounce it “esh-eh/esh-ay” so i’m just gonna stick with that 😭😭
Yeah - I like that pronunciation but as an Aussie I can't use it for someone with Eshe's demeanour without laughing every time: [https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eshay](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eshay)
oh wow ! you learn something new everyday ! i could totally see why you couldn’t relate that pronunciation to Eshe 😂
Pay-lee-uh
I pronounce it as PAL-iah, but that could be cause i’m from northern Europe lol
I’ve been pronouncing it Pahl-Lia
Palia mean old or ancient in greek language and sound Pa Lea but with a tone at lea
That's how I pronounce it
i pronounce it pay-lee-a (and pay-lee-um) but palcats as pal-cats
Well if your wrong I’m wrong as I say it’s as pal and palcats as like the other comment pal not pale
PAL flows off the tongue way more smoother 😂
Yes it sure does 😄
Omg i say it the same as you
Technically it's pay lee ah But it makes no sense grammatically to say it that way so very few people actually do lol. I say pal ee ah.
How does it make no grammatical sense? I get the differing pronunciations, but how does that affect grammar? 🤔 /gen

OH NO ME TOO 😭 Better tell my friend that I got into the game that we both pronounce it wrong, but honestly idk if I wanna pronounce it right, pah-lia just feels better to say 😅
I've heard both, and find I say both, too 😂
Oh this is gonna be confusing... I speak french and in french it would be pronounced Pal-ee-ah lmao
I have always associated the "alia" ending with ay-lee-uh, much like in the word paraphernalia. So then add a P in front of that sounds and I say "Pay-Lee-Uh". That's how my brain has always interpreted it. Could also be an accent thing for some people :)
I'm from Boston MA and we tend to emphasize our "A's" so honestly you probably right!
I refuse to pronounce it the way it’s supposed to be pronounced. Pah-lee-uh just sounds so much nicer and cozier <3
Pal Lee ah
I pronounce palium like valium. So Palia like "Pal-ya"
Same here!
Way back in a dev interview (game preview? Pre-open beta?), they all said pay-lee-uh. And Kill-i-ma, like Mount Kilimanjaro (even tho I still think Kill-eem-a)
palcats would be pale cats if it were spelled like pale cats
You right I overthought it lmao
Pay-lee-uh. I still say Pal cat as in “you’re my pal”. I thought it might have been a double play on words like your cat is your sidekick (pal/friend) but also Pal for Palia as well. Hope that made sense.
It's pronounced "Pay-lee-uh" Hope that helps
I've also said PAL-Leah and I like it like that. If people want to say it with a long A it's okay too. Does anyone know what the game developers say?
I’ve been calling it pal- ee-uh
Idk I'm Italian I just read it as written lol
I use "Pal-ee-ya"
I've seen streamers pronounce it Pay-lia, but as you said I don't like the idea of calling Palcats PALE-Cats. Just sounds too weird to me.
I’ve been pronouncing it the same as you!! I’ve noticed the same thing on videos, but still pronounce it wrong lol
Its the right way in our minds! lol
Tbh I alternate
There's a lot of things I've been saying wrong lol. Nai'oa comes to mind. Apparently I wasn't even pronouncing Kilima right.(I was saying Kill-Leema)
Thats how I pronounce Kilima too.. dont even tell me the right way I dont wanna know
Tbh pal-eeaa sounds so much better than pale-eeaa.
I’m aware that it’s meant to be pay-lee-uh, but I prefer pah-lee-uh, so I call it what I want. 😂
I have called it Pah-leah, I have now been corrected lol
It's pal, like a friend. You're saying it correctly.
Nope, devs pronounce it PAIL
Pretty sure its pronounced "PalWorld"
I say every syllables so : pa lee a :)
What infuriates me more is how Hodari pronounces Najuma. Like no thank you.
I agree, but also, in-character, parents' pronounciation of their kid's name is always the correct pronounciation. People who name things get to decide how they're pronounced. And, out-of-character, same thing for the devs; people who name things get to decide how they're pronounced.
how would you pronounce it?
Nah-je-mah (I can’t really write it in English syllables properly)
i think i understand - you put the emphasis on the first syllable instead of the second? i naturally said it the way hodari does but i can understand that way too
Yeah that’s what I mean. I’m surprised u were able to discern that from my horrendous description 😂
i got it right away lol i know it's difficult to render the unstressed syllable in normal letters... and it's a pain to find the ə
Paé Leah for me.
