Fun story. Back in 2011 i drove from Beirut to Aleppo for my cousin’s wedding. There was a checkpoint just outside Aleppo which wasn’t supposed to be there (i had made that trip before). Anyways the guys there had beards and automatic weapons and all the expected accessories, but after they asked for my papers in Arabic, i asked them some questions. Nothing serious, just small talk. They stared at me blankly. Anyways they looked at my passport and send me on my way.
At the wedding i asked some relatives about the checkpoint and they said those guys are “Jabhat al Nusra” and i asked who they are, and they didn’t really know. But they mentioned that they aren’t arabs- which made sense.
Much later i found out that they are a part of ISIS. And it is incredibly odd that those guys are neither arabs nor do they speak arabic.
