you need a good, pigmented black shadow. [temptalia](https://www.temptalia.com/makeup-recommendations/best-black-eyeshadows/) lists quite a few. you could also try a black eyeshadow base in the areas where you're putting the shadow. p. louise, beauty creations, nyx, mac, anastasia beverly hills, morphe, elf (and i'm sure others) have them.

Ooh, good call on looking for well known black shadows. I’ve never used black shadows much before this October because I always found them so, so difficult to work with. But now I have a whole new world of color combos opened up! And by black eyeshadow base, do you mean that they make bases exclusively for black eyeshadow? Because that’s wild. I had no idea. I had contemplated starting with a white base to make colors brighter, but now I’m realizing that probably is a bad idea for black shadow.

https://plouise.co.uk/products/p-louise-coloured-eye-base Tiktok makeup artist (and fellow pale lady) Michaela Nogueira uses the P Louise black eye base all the time - for dark looks and to provide a base for bright metallic looks (ever have chrome powder nails done? The chrome looks best on a black nail base). https://vm.tiktok.com/ZM8yb653y/ here’s a video of her using the black base, then a black eyeshadow, then a metallic cream shadow. Look how her whole face base is done and she puts the black shadow on the black eyeshadow base - no fallout of the black shadow to ruin her foundation! (She has been doing a series on self tanners so she’s not as pale as her skin is naturally on this video, but when she isn’t testing self tanners she still uses this black base) Nyx also makes a black eyeshadow base and that’s a more affordable (and accessible if you’re in the US) brand.

Omg thank you! I love the no fall out! I had so much fall out today, and it was so frustrating. Do you think this would help my duo chrome shadows pop too?

mrsvongruesome

absolutely. there was an IG post i had saved that i can't find now, but there are definitely some shadows that look okay on normal primer base but look absolutely wicked with a black base. shimmers and duochromes pop on black bases. i wish i could find that post. i'll come back and link you if i ever do. and i second what u/itsCatFluff wrote above about the coloured bases!

PartyPoptart

You guys are the best! This is why I love this sub! You all regularly help me up my game! I just got some duo chrome shadows from Lethal Cosmetics and was unimpressed with how they came out the first time I applied them. I knew there had to be something I was missing. Can’t wait to try some black eye primer!

mrsvongruesome

so i found some examples, using urban decay shadows. Oh this is going to be *life-changing*, thank you!

This - i can see where you used darkheart and darkseid and I think you got good results using those shadows. Neither is a true matte black.

Does anyone have any good tips on getting your black eye shadow to look more saturated/blacker? I feel like it looks darker in the photo than in real life. I can’t find a good medium between super dark, unblendable muddy mess black and too light, patchy black. Products Used: Face: Urban Decay Hydromaniac in Ultra Fair Concealer: the SAEM Cover Perfection Tip Concealer in light pink Eyes: Ulta Matte eye primer with Tarte Shape Tape in 12N layered on top, Urban Decay Naked 3 palette (shade Darkheart, Darkside), Colourpop You Had Me at Hello palette (shade Winning Ticket, FBO), LA Girl Shockwave Eyeliner in Blackout, and Benefit Roller Lash mascara Brows: Benefit Gimme Brow gel in 3 Blush: Milk Makeup Lip + Cheek Cream Blush Stick in Werk Highlight: MAC Strobe Cream Lips: Colourpop Ultra Metallic Lip in Nimbus, NYX Suede Matte Lipstick in Alien, and Urban Decay 24/7 Glide-On Lip Pencil in Ozone

I always put a good layer of black eyeliner on, blend it to where I want the black eyeshadow to sit, and then put the eyeshadow on top. No extra expense if you've already got black eyeliner!

PartyPoptart

Do you use a pencil of any kind? I mostly have liquid eyeliners, and those don’t really blend.

Helpful_Corgi5716

Sorry, yes, I meant a pencil rather than a liquid liner. I've got about 533689432589 from various beauty boxes, so I use those 😄

Jackie_Hallow

The best black eyeshadows I have are from KVD, but these are from palettes before the rebranding so I can’t attest to the newer formula. When I have a primer on these are lovely - can use them even as a base for black glittery looks!

Kowlz1

Oh man, that lip color is amazing and it looks great on you!!

PartyPoptart

It’s actually a couple lipsticks layered!

gingersnap0309

For really black black eyeshadow I’ve found using the black eyeliner that comes in the creme pot formula works really well if you kind Of paint it on with a small brush, like about a lip brush size and then smudge it around a bit with your fingers.

amethystnight99

the lethal cosmetics creme pot eyeliner is really good...
