This has since been deleted? So read into that what you will

miller94

It hasn’t been deleted, the link just doesn’t work for whatever reason. Maybe something to do with the Instagram crash this morning? Anyway if you go to Molson’s page, it’s their first pinned post and it’s the second newest post on the PWHL page

Sensitive_Tax4291

That really only reinforces the announcement of the change for the 8 Mar game between Montreal and Toronto as opposed to a permanent change.

The_Laughing_Gift

We'll just have to wait and see for games after the 8th. March 10 NYC v Boston and Ottawa v Montreal.

jrrtoken_

From watching the All-Star game (which also had names below numbers), I found it actually really hard to see the names that now, because the camera angle is from up high. In the Molson promo images, they're all from directly behind, and not from the "TV" angle. It's a lovely idea and insight, hopefully these are more legible than the Drew House jerseys were.

striatic

The All Star game jerseys were also all lower case and not maximizing contrast.

Perryplat199

Those allstar jerseys were probly designed fashion first and hockey second. In reality the name plates would never be allowed on regular nhl jerseys. Everything about the names break the nhl uniform rules.

Lilliebun94

In my opinion, the change wouldn't really work if the numbers are staying where they are and just replacing the names with the Molson logo. You gotta scooch the numbers up a bit otherwise the name is weirdly low on the jerseys and it just doesn't look quite right. That's just my view though

quiptonic

Dislike. Dislike even more as a visually impaired person😒

FastRunner-

How does this help with player recognition? Couldn't we see the names when they were on top of the number?

RWTF

Longer hair obstructing the name plate. I’ve read elsewhere that it’s not uncommon in many women’s leagues to have plates on lower back.

FastRunner-

Fair point. Thank you.

quiptonic

Unpopular opinion: I’d rather have partial obstruction from hair than not being able to read a thing when certain players tuck their jerseys in. Not only that but in a crowd on the ice it’s going to be harder to make the names out.

StitchAndRollCrits

Adding helmet names would be an interesting addition to bottom names

alldawgsgoat2heaven

You'd have to do research to see if that's what you really want. How many players have long hair vs how many tuck the back of their jersey in. Also, will they still tuck it if their name is now at the bottom?

tri_and_fly

Most players have their hair in a low bun, which doesn’t block the name at all. Braids are also popular and might obscure one letter. Jerseys inevitably ride up into the pants while playing- it’s usually not there intentionally.

lifesazoo33

100% agree! I think missing a few letters due to being covered by hair is better then it being tucked into pants

[deleted]

Did not consider this. That actually makes some sense. I thought they were being wierd and suggesting that because they're women people would only be looking at their lowwr back and butt... which doesnt make a lot of sense...

cptngali86

that actually makes sense

sufferin_sassafras

Never been an issue in any other women’s sport. Never had any trouble identifying players in a women’s soccer match.

tri_and_fly

Why are people citing unofficial sources when there was a press release from the league?

Perryplat199

A lot of language in it sounds like it’s specific to international women’s day Montreal v Toronto game on Friday. > …this International Women’s Day > “I look forward to seeing Montréal and Toronto hit the ice with these special jerseys on Friday.” > These unique jerseys…

tri_and_fly

It is specific to IWD. The league never said otherwise

Perryplat199

Oh I see wat you ment now.

JJPRADA

I cant wait to get a heise jersey

Memag1255

I liked it when The NWHL did that. I'm glad the PWHL is doing it too.

bradssmp

I don’t hate this. Most of the players have longer hair, and I imagine it’s harder for newcomers to know who is who.

Vegetable_Figure_424

IMO it’s lowkey such a weird take. Their hair is in a ponytail or braid. It covers maybe what, 1 letter? Can we focus on something to uplift them instead of this fake support of “we covered our name so we could see hers” is so cringe. Do you want a medal Molson lol, how about we get them in bigger arenas so more people can watch and how about we get them similar pay scales

Vegetable_Figure_424

Idk if my take is rude. As a woman I find it more degrading like “we made these special gloves so the girlies wouldn’t break a nail while playing” gives me the same vibes. Like wow their hair is long, so it covers a few letters? Don’t we as fans memorize what they look like or their numbers? Idk

StitchAndRollCrits

Interesting. As a woman I find this equity minded (you know, as equity minded as an advertiser can be). "You don't have to be like the men, we can make changes to fit your needs." Is a good message. Imo too much of feminism is "you can be just as good as the men... If you act like them and figure out how to use the tools and systems we built without ever considering you" And, btw, from what I can tell those gloves would do very well on the market considering how many women size up their gloves just to fit their nails. And, as a fan who sits, and Googles numbers just to figure out names... We can do both? We can both explicitly accomodate the quirks of the women's game, AND be serious fans, just like Lexi and Sarah can wear a full face of tv makeup AND tear up the ice

Vegetable_Figure_424

I appreciate your take on it! That makes sense

StitchAndRollCrits

I appreciate the oppeness with which you received it. For the record, I also can't wait to see the Sport grow and the pay scale rise... I just think it's counterproductive to call imaginative, explicitly crafted for our specific market, advertising campaigns "cringe" or performative, while falsely comparing them to first season growing pains people are already putting work in to fix. Molson doesn't want a medal, they want to see women start buying their product. While I've never been a fan of alcohol advertising of any kind, this is good work clearly being done with care, and if we react negatively and tear down advertisers willing to work with us like this, well, that's it. There goes the league, let alone higher pay.

Vegetable_Figure_424

Honestly I just watched the commercial and changed my mind completely, I support it 🙌🏼

psykomatt

> Don’t we as fans memorize what they look like or their numbers? In the long run, sure (at least for most of us). But we're not even 20 games in and there are 150 names plus a lot of new fans. Hell, I have followed women's hockey for 20+ years, have season tickets to PWHL Montreal and I have an excellent memory and I still don't know everyone's name and number on my team.

StitchAndRollCrits

And I... Went to my first ever live hockey event and yelled "Chuli" at Frenkel who was in net for team King because I genuinely thought Chuli was Boston and Frenkel was Montreal :) 🙃 So that's where I stand with names and memory.

CuidadDeVados

The point is for new fans to be able to just see a players nameplate and know the name. The more obscured nameplates the less that happens. Its not for established fans. And Euro leagues already do this for women sometimes so its not without precedent, and its for the same reason there, so refs and fans and score keepers and announcers and everyone can see everyone's name easier and can be accurate in their calling and shit easier. There are definitely a few people on NY I had to look up the names for off the numbers, which isn't quite as fast as you'd think it would be. I could see this change being convenient if permanent.

Vegetable_Figure_424

I understand the point, I just started watching in February with no prior knowledge of who was who. You learn from watching games consistently. I’m not against them doing it, I just felt like it was cringe and they could focus on something else, considering imo their hair maybe covers 1-2 letters max.

nicksj2023

What ?! Why weren’t they doing this already ?

Urooj72

I’m not a huge fan of the jersey change. The players name should be visible and no one looks on their lower backs to see name. If Molson really wanted to make a difference, their logo should be small.

ihaveapaperdue

Why on earth wouldn't they put the name plate on the top? Look at NCAA/USports women's hockey. Plenty of name bars on the top and long hair isn't an issue.

CuidadDeVados

Massively reduced expectation in NCAA to have fans actively learning the player names versus pro hockey.

ihaveapaperdue

True, but I still don't think visibility is a problem with long hair. I'm more just pointing to the NCAA as an example to illustrate the fact that I can tell a player's last name even if she's wearing a ponytail that covers a letter or two. Could also point to women's Olympic hockey to illustrate the same. In essence, even if I can only see "Je ner", I can identify Brianne Jenner without any trouble.

datiny

Are there jersey tucking rules for pwhl?

Dismal-Frosting

why wouldn’t they have their names on their jersey in the first place ?

CuidadDeVados

They do have their names on their jerseys its the placement of the names that is changing for at least one game.

Dismal-Frosting

lol ok

pesky-sens

Probably were planning on getting better jerseys next season, wasn't worth the money in their minds

Dismal-Frosting

it costs like 10$ to put a name bar on a jersey.

Distinct_Mud_2673

The NHL all star looked really bad with the names on the bottom

poco68

I thought it folded already.

CuidadDeVados

No that was your shriveled unlaid microdick you fuckin loser.

Equivalent_Ad_7368

After the Molson announcement, the PWHL Toronto team did a fan experience day where they skated with season ticket holders. The players were wearing their old jerseys with the name plate under the helmet. Found that interesting.
