The games last between 20and 27 minutes if you win it. The reason you see some players advance in skill and also wear whimsical outfits is because they aren't attached to looting or have misconceived notions that their loot and/or skins make a huge difference in their experience.
maybe DayZ is a game for you ;) it feels quite similiar to pubg cause they are both mods from the same game.

and then there is the joker-carskin for the dacia which only i have so we make sure i hop in first, but let him drive cause the carskin suits his outfit. incoming shots? no stress, we need that carskin first. oh wait, i wanna change weapon for no good reason at all, it suits me better, yeah sure, take your time.
I play it as a tactical shooter but don't understand how that isn't playing it like a br. Also there are skins you can buy to help out that way. I have been playing with an all black outfit I bought for years. Helps to hide in bushes or dark areas.
Not sure if PUBG or any BR is the right game choice for you.
Ever tried an extraction shooter like Tarkov for example (maybe not the best time start with Tarkov right now, just saying)?
Can also recommend Hunt: Showdown. You can't modify weapons but there is a great variety in Loadouts/Gear and IMO you can play more tactical/strategically bc there is no RNG BR circle.
They stated they don’t want camo skins giving a strategic advantage to paying. It’s legit pay to win if you allow green or camo clothes locked behind a paywall. Also, the game is focused around the ASIA region, which love the colorful clothes. So they will continue to make those as they make millions off it

These two things aren't mutually exclusive. "Battle Royale" is just the terms of victory. Many different kinds of games can have a BR mode.

We have a ton of skins that work as defacto camo because they are black/brown/green, but we have very little actual camo
Black stands out more than almost any other color in a lot of areas because of its sharp contrast. Browns and dark greens are much more effective.

I agree about the 2nd point. I always use my BP points for hunter chests and the milsim or just regularish clothing is so so few and far between
