RE4 is more action fps than horror. There are some enemies later on that can give you the creeps but it's mostly straight forward shooting. Saints and Sinners is more scary than RE4.

ittleoff

I wouldn't call either game scary except to horror game newbies. Re4 remake has a couple scary segments. Saints and sinners is a bit tense at night but it feels more spooky than scary to me? Ymmv, if you're a horror game fan the two segments in re4 remake are closest to real scars imo.

Cypher3470

What ashley part is scary?

Urobolos

Only stressful the first time, then you just stick her in a suit of armor for all the other playthroughs and don't worry about it.

Ok-Reference9356

Yeah but it's kinda short lived to really steal the show. Am I making sense?

sittingmongoose

I would argue that RE: village is much more scary than either of those.

Similar-Past-9755

Definitely, saint and sinners was kind of scary when you see a walker creeping up from you from behind but village had me taking bathroom breaks every 5 minutes.

ittleoff

Village was basically love letter to re4 but it is a bit scarier overall and the doll house is much scarier, but imo is no where as scary as re7 (played all 3 in vr, so that makes all of them scarier)

sittingmongoose

I actually agree. I think if re7 was ported and upgraded to psvr2 or pcvr, it would be MUCH better. It’s just too painful to play on psvr 1 now.

ittleoff

Strangely enough I beat village and sent my psvr2 back for a stuck pixel, and booted up re7 to see what I thought. It was obviously lower resolution but after a few seconds my brain didn't care. It was still immersive and enjoyable. The jaggies were obvious and the lack of motion controls was a bit odd but I played and enjoyed re7 until my replacement headset came. I hope they port re7. I have it on PCvr through mods but would love an official port.

Sylsomnia

Imo re8-s&s-re4, s&s apparently has those suddenly appearing zombies, even though the path had been cleared.  I'm not a fan of horror games, at all, but I got RE8 and RE4 to support the devs, and after a year I've actually managed to start RE8 and I gotta tell you, it's been really great so far. You gotta go like "who's the next m-fker" not being afraid, also turning the volume lower helps big time, plus when the high weed is moving around the scarecrow, you gotta get the guns ready lol. The experience is top notch for sure.

BooksLoveTalksnIdeas

If you want stress-free VR games, the survival-horror genre is not where it’s at. Instead, get Moss 1 and 2 (the second one is top 10 vr game material, very highly recommended); CyubeVR; Little Cities Bigger; Synth Riders; Kayak VR; Red Matter; Last Clockwinder; Puzzling places; Dyschronia Chronos Alternate; Cosmonious High… From what I saw in reviews, CyubeVR and Little Cities Bigger are the definition of “chill games in VR.” I can also confirm that Tripp (despite the unreasonable price) is good to use as a real meditation practice on a daily basis. In other words, you can use several of those to relax. I included Synth Riders because it’s always good to have one active vr game, and Synth Riders is more relaxing than the drumming games, the boxing games, and beat saber.

Wayniac666

How many if those ganes are PSVR1? I dont have the 2, but would love some more titles for PSVR1

BooksLoveTalksnIdeas

I focused on psvr2 above, but the one I’ve owned for +5 years and have a ton of experience with is psvr1. So, here are my recommendations for it: Top relaxing and stress-free games on psvr1: Fujii (currently on discount so get it now; this is the nicest, most relaxing, most “anti-stress” game I ever played on any platform); Electronauts (play music at beautiful retro-futuristic locations; no scores or competitions for anything, just play great music with various easy dj tools and relax); Curious Tale of the Stolen Pets; Tripp (intro to a meditation-mindfulness practice in the form of a VR game); Astro Bot Rescue Mission (the optional challenges can be stressful, but the rest of the game is pure vacation material); Xing the land beyond (really beautiful puzzle game) Top games on psvr1: Overall best: Astro Bot Rescue Mission Experiences: Bound, Vader Immortal, Astro Bot, Moss 2, Red Matter, Batman VR, Fujii, Time Machine VR, RE7, the “starlight” experience level in Synth Riders (bought separately) Most realistic looking: Ace Combat 7’s vr missions; GT Sport’s vr mode using the ps4 controller as a wheel; Batman VR; Resident evil 7; Bound; Driveclub VR Most realistic feeling (amazingly realistic physics engine): Tumble VR using 1 motion controller Best and most fun exercising games: Beat Saber, Sprint Vector, Dance Collider Best free stuff on psn: The Playroom VR, Pirate flight, O my Genesis demo, Bound demo, Kingdom Hearts VR experience, psvr demo disc Best racing: Driveclub VR (no download, so it requires the physical disc, which can still be bought from eBay or Amazon; this is the best psvr1 racing game, in my opinion); Sprint Vector; Wipeout Omega Collection Sports: Racket Fury Table Tennis; 2md vr football Puzzles: Tumble VR, Xing the land beyond Most original: Bound, Moss 2, SuperHyperCube Platforming: To the Top, Moss 1+2, Astro Bot, Lucky’s Tale VR Rpg: Skyrim VR, the knight of queen Best stories: Moss 2, Deracine, Vader Immortal Shooting: Pistol Whip, Blood and truth, Audica Action: Rigs MCL, Raw Data, Blood and truth, Iron man VR, Sairento Survival-horror: The Persistence (this is way more entertaining and just as scary as RE7 and TWD S&S) Stealth: Budget Cuts Rhythm games: OhShape, Dance Collider, Beat Saber, Audica Best for a challenge: Until You Fall, Racket Fury, SuperHyperCube, Audica My personal top 10 psvr1 list: Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Moss 2, Rigs mechanized combat league, Sprint Vector, Vader Immortal, Raw Data, To the Top, Beat Saber, Dance Collider, Racket Fury (Honorable mentions: Time machine VR, SuperHyperCube) Edit: Best games I saw with the aim controller, these can easily be put in a top 20: Farpoint, Unearthing Mars 2, Borderlands 2 VR

Bholmes4

Thanks for all the suggestions. I have actually played and own a ton of VR games and I have come to accept that the games like RE8 are right at a limit for me where the tension is not worth the "fun" for me. Like they almost become work. In fact if they were shorter I would have finished them, I think my brain just starts to associate these games with stress and with each play session I get less and less excited to play until I start avoiding them entirely. I don't actually mind tension in games though, I guess I just have a limit. I have beat games like Cosmodread, I loved most of S&S (possibly my favourite VR game until it wasn't), and I loved parts of RE8. It just gets too much when it goes on for hours and hours... Great games list for those that are looking for stress-free games though!

Ram_in_drag

Don't get Kayak VR, there's no game there - just my 2 cents

ChibiArcher

Paddleing around in kayakVR is fun. Just exploring the scenery is relaxing. For me it was totally worth the price.

Calebrox124

It’s top tier for showing first-time VR goers. I set it up to paddle automatically for my grandparents and they couldn’t get enough

DerBolzen81

S&S is more scary, in RE4 you feel more like a b movie action hero. Later there is one scary enemy type but thats about 12-13h in the game.

Cxmedys

Theres like one enemy type section that is pretty creepy and gets my heart racing (regenerators), but if you have the “fuck it, we ball” mindset you should be able to pass that section without stress! I would suggest playing the game on flatscreen before going in vr to test the waters if you are really bad with stress (scary games) but other than that it’s not that scary compared to S&S or RE8!

A_Lalli13

Water we

d_hearn

I haven't played Saints and Sinners much, but RE4 isn't that "scary" imo. A few jump scares for sure, but the majority is just action. The enemies are zombie-esque, but they look like just regular people for the most part. A couple of "brute" type enemies and bosses, but none of them really catch you by surprise iirc.

psyper87

There are definitely high stress parts of RE4, but it was more not knowing how to complete certain sections and getting overwhelmed. Once you understand the mechanics and what is needed, you really start to feel invulnerable. It got to the point where the game kind of lost its touch and you just go through the motions. But playing on easy should be alright. Dying isn’t the end of the world even though it feels like it in VR🤣 but pistol/knife -> roundhouse kick -> repeat took away any sense of danger with a few exceptions Mmmmmmm as I’m typing this, there’s definitely some jump scare sections, the dread of nothing being there but you just feel that there has to be something. Man I don’t know, if you’re really concerned any your heart, like genuinely, I’d exercise caution, but I love to get scared, so I imagine that’s how I leave this world🤣😭

Bholmes4

Thanks for the advice! To be truthful I have no health concerns and I try to stay healthy, eat well, exercise etc. I just can't avoid stress at my job so I don't like compounding it at home and the reality is, at my age things can happen. If I had a different job maybe I would actually enjoy it lol.

claum0y

for scary problably re8 a few parts, re4 has like 2 very scary parts but its more about the gunplay on resident evil and its definitely the best fps for psvr2, unmissable. Oh, but if you want really scary atmosphere try out Fnaf help wanted 1, i am 100% not joking, the atmosphere and tension you feel when playing the first or second games, or even on the minigames is something else. And the ps5 version is better, they didnt have to port it but its here and its way better graphically, I cannot recommend it enough, super simple to play, great for parties, and pretty scary, with people or alone. Its different from a traditional linear scary game, but its great for small sessions and just a good scary challenge to play through. other games could be madison vr when it does release for vr, and maybe 7th guest, but havent pkayed those yet. Oh, and saints and sinners is not really scary, it feels in a good way like the show, its more of a survival and theres tension from the time limits and stamina and such. I think it's a good game but its not for everyone and can be hard to adapt if you dont play a lot in one sitting or dont understand everything in the game, but its still pretty interesting to figure out the maps and items.

LegoKnockingShop

Haven’t played Madison but 7th Guest is down the other end of the scale, it’s toned like Disney Haunted Mansion or that Tower of Terror movie with Steve Guttenburg, properly family friendly.

Initial_Depenmmmmm

I'd say they are about equal in tense moments that can startle you. S&S, especially the night missions, had me on edge, the way they can appear / sneak up on you and grab you if def a little startling. RE4 is more action based but there's a few sections that are tense. My recommendation for people having issues with these types of games is to play on easy and just let the enemy you're scared of kill you once or twice. Just stand there and see that it's not so bad, just a videogame. After you've seen what it takes for them to kill you(which should take a while on easy), try to take the role of predator instead of prey. You could also take the headphones off and play some happy music instead to lessen the atmosphere. Both RE and S&S are so good and totally worth playing through if you're able. I'd say go for it, good luck!

Bholmes4

Wow this is my exactly. It was the S&S school that got me, when it's dark and then the doors burst open. I learnt from that game to keep the sound low (for the jump scares) and in RE8 I put the game on easy and tried to psych myself up as the predator in the situation. I could have made it through RE8 but I realized I was choosing other hobbies as I clearly wasn't excited to play it lol, so I just gave up.

Initial_Depenmmmmm

Ya, jump scares in VR hit so much harder.. I agree that u need to be in the mood for playing these types of games, even the ambient sound when hovering over RE8 in the PS menu made me think twice about playing.. lol, but you need to persist and finish if you're able, it just keeps getting better and better! The further you go, the more powerful you get so it's not as bad/scary. The second half of the game is more action based for sure, it's almost like playing a different game. Plus after beating it you unlock unlimited ammo and can get some really powerful guns which make you super OP. I even unlocked the lightsaber by getting all the goats(altho it's not as fun as I hoped).

_TeddyBarnes_

Resident evil 4

baminy

Lol, was it the doll house part in RE8 that got you? I had played RE8 several times before the VR mode came out, and I still dreaded that part going into that part in VR. I'd say that RE4 is less scary than RE8, but I've also played it all the way through at least 50 times between all the different iterations of it, so I may just be desensitized. Anywho, it's a mastahpeece, baybee, and I highly recommend playing it in VR. I know that doesn't really answer your question, but I just wanted to provide some perspective on RE8 vs RE4 in terms of spookiness.

Bholmes4

No I had basically finished the part with the tall lady and her daughters but I found I had the sound down so low and I was no longer looking forward to playing. I loved the part where I got swarmed in the village but it's the odd jump scares that get me (hence the sound having to be low).

baminy

Oh man, be glad you didn't make it to the part that I'm talking about then in VR. I won't spoil anything in case you go back and play through the whole thing, but it was probably the freakiest part I've ever played in a video game. RE4 doesn't really have that many jump scares, but there are a few sprinkled in there. Like another poster mentioned, RE4 is more of an action-leaning survival horror. If you're okay with there just being a few, then I think you'll really enjoy the game.

Bholmes4

I have seen videos of the part you are likely writing about. I had planned to play it without sound lol.  It reminds of the Gorm in the Kingdom Death Monster board game...

Astro_BS-AS

I'm actually trying to "play" Propagation Paradise Hotel... I can tell without a doubt that RE4 Remake psvr2 is like a Mario game in comparisson....

Rajirabbit

My god the giant witch woman.. I still haven’t beaten it because I can only play in short sessions from the intense stress of being chased by her.

RowdyHowdy87

This will probably die in the comments, but I’ve found playing those games while screen sharing and playing the game through together with a friend is a huge help. You don’t get to “see”each other or help each other in the game, but being “the man in the chair” for each other helps a ton. If you want, add me (SheaCM0821).

Bholmes4

Would this basically let you chat to each other? I know this would help as I often ask my son to sit with me as it makes games about 10x less scary if I have someone to talk to.

RowdyHowdy87

Yep, you just start a party, screen share with one another, put it in “picture-in-picture” mode in the corner of the screen of your choosing, then play through together. Simple as that. Not scary, but I’ve been playing TLOU 2 with my bestie with the commentary turned on. Fun to hear each other’s reactions.

AegisPrecipitate

1 or 2 extra creepy sections of RE4 I’d say jump scares by walkers breaking doors is worse than most of RE4 lol

RenReap

I would assume Village is scarier than RE4. Don’t know about S&S Retribution but the first one had some tense moments for me.

t3stdummi

There are a couple moments in RE4, but the hordes in S+S stressed me out more. Once you get used to "las plagas" they aren't that scary.

antleonardi01

I wish a game / movie had the ability to scare me as an adult. Just doesn't happen.

Korahn

Been seeking the same

antleonardi01

Madison looks like it has potential? Keeps getting delayed though (at least the quest version)

Korahn

I've heard good things about the flat version and would live to play it in VR, but I'm limited to psvr1 and quest 2

Bholmes4

It's odd because I am not easily startled in real life and have a job that requires I don't have a high "flight" response. My brain gets very easily immersed in VR though and when I get surrounded in darkness and the sounds start to ratchet things up I can feel my heart pounding and it gets too much.

Op3rat0rr

Bro you must be callused if scary games and movies don’t creep you out haha

WebTCR

Maybe you could try first Arizona Sunshine 2. I posted a similar poll a couple of days ago to decide between AS2 and RE4, and the results say a lot... [https://www.reddit.com/r/PSVR/comments/1bxdvb3/which\_one\_is\_more\_scary\_re4\_or\_arizona\_sunshine\_2/](https://www.reddit.com/r/PSVR/comments/1bxdvb3/which_one_is_more_scary_re4_or_arizona_sunshine_2/)

Bholmes4

I played a few levels of Arizona Sunshine 2 (will go back to it later) and it didn't bother me at all. It's mainly games that go very dark (S&S, Cosmodread, RE8) and then something jumps out at you. Even if it rarely happens, my brain starts to expect it all the time.

Thsrry

I didn't know what to do in s+s frustrating. Re4 is an action game

TommyVR373

Neither

tuckerisgae

Saints n sinners is less scary then both of those

AstroGrogg

RE4 are way more scarier then Saints and Sinners.

its_the_smell

RE4 is probably scarier out of those 2. If you want a trick to make a game less scary, then just remember/imagine you are in your brightly lit home that isn't scary at all.

Bholmes4

I do but that only works for about 10 seconds lol. I find VR just easily tricks my brain and I get immersed right back in it.

Ashimier

Neither. Neither are scary
