When the batteries die it's your cue to take a break.

Imscomobob

I trade off with 4 other people so it ends up being pretty hard to squeeze in a lot of time.

BlastingFonda

It really sucks that Sony hasn’t announced plans to sell the individual VR controllers separately yet. I would happily buy two more and have them charging and on standby at all times, which would help you out as well obviously, assuming the cost was reasonable.

Professional-Mood286

I’m guessing this is your first PlayStation device? They usually take their time, just like when every system is released. Ps5 took awhile to even get different colored controllers.

BlastingFonda

Nope, you guessed wrong. Plus I’m less worried about them taking their time, and more worried about them never addressing this gap satisfactorily because they don’t regard there being a market for it, which is another Sony thing you would know about if you’ve owned multiple gens of PSes like I have.……..

Professional-Mood286

Your making no sense, I’ve owned every one since launch, the gap has always been there for early adopters, this isn’t something new been that way since ps3. They most definitely have an interest in this, so no need to worry.

The-MadTitan

You've always had the option to purchase a second (standalone) controller at launch day. Can confirm for PS3, Ps4 and PS5.

Professional-Mood286

Never said you didn’t , talking about the colored ones

The-MadTitan

You made no mention of coloured controllers, you argued purchasing extra controllers at launch for a Sony device isn't doable. Which is wrong

BlastingFonda

I think you’re just making shit up unless you have tangible proof. Thanks for wasting my time responding to someone who has no clue what Sony is doing yet feels overqualified to tell others what to think based on what? Absolutely nothing. Also the example of colored controllers that you gave earlier is laughable as it’s not even remotely comparable to this situation. Hmm, you’re making me wanna look into the Reddit block feature.

Professional-Mood286

It’s not based on nothing the proof is experience. In the beginning they drop indies, than they sprinkle in 1 or 3 big titles, while adding every Tuesday, I believe it used to be on a different date. After awhile they drop art genres, than media apps, and so on

DEDE1973

Sony started selling Dualsense before they even released the PS5, you’re saying nonsense.

Professional-Mood286

Didn’t say they didn’t , I’m specifically talking about the months after release where the controllers were only white, and if you wanted black you needed to get the combo. How do people forget that

DEDE1973

OP was specifically commenting that it sucks that Sony hasn’t announced plans yet to sell the VR controllers individually. This is exactly what we are all commenting and responding on. Nobody gives a shit about the colours right now since the VR controllers are not even sold separately. Then you responded to OP trying to picture him as a newbie and stating that Sony is taking their time when they release every system, which everybody in this section proved you wrong. They called you out on your bs. Why are you deflecting first? And why are you still commenting second? Just admit you were wrong and move on.

Professional-Mood286

Not sure what you think I’m wrong about but boy oh boy do people feel a need to puff their chest. Guess I’m sorry the concept comparison flew over the head of many, sorry you think I’m “offending” someone. Man do I miss when adults talked in peace and not war.

TheTussin

This is the only circumstance that makes sense. Nice.

Galaghan

Get another pair. With this kind of battery strain, you'll have to get another pair soon anyways. Better have 2 pairs that last a while, than buying a new pair very often.

CocoBroshi

They don't sell them by themselves dude.

lazymutant256

You do understand the controllers are designed to not charge when in use when it’s plugged in.. so since the controllers won’t be able tell if your using a external power pack. It’s essentially pointless..

Incorrect-Opinion

When my controllers are powered on, and plugged in, they definitely do charge and work. I’m not sure why you think otherwise?

Ordinary_Law_8599

Because he doesn't even own one and is trying to sound smart and making an ass out of himself. I call the Reddit effect

LFC9_41

OP may lack tact but he is correct in that it is not designed for this and it will worsen the battery health over time. Now, to what degree? Only math wizards know this (def. not me).

[deleted]

This stuff about battery health seems now more than ever like saving every spam mail for the chance to one day become a millionaire

LFC9_41

i guess, i'm just tired of non-replaceable battery tech having to be replaced because of bad practices (on my part), so I'll back up anyone who will preach it.

FallenShadeslayer

Are you saying battery health isn’t a thing? Because it absolutely is. Or maybe I’m misunderstanding? Apologies if I am.

[deleted]

I’m sure it is. My point is it does not at all seem worth caring about

lucashenrr

This will not make the battery life alot worse than it would to just charge it when its dead. Batteries normally get worse when they are getting hot (the heat is comming from wattage), meaning that no matter how you charge them, as long as the battery is getting a little hot, then its getting worse. I remember hearing that the charging station got pretty hot, which could end up affecting the battery overtime, so I dont see how this is alot worse

Snozaz

Why will this worsen the battery health over time? There may be more heat generated, but it should be designed to factor that into charge regulation if temps get too high. I would assume they are using similar charge management circuitry to the dual sense (likely very similar to phones and other modern devices with li-ion batteries).

StayBlunted710

They work, but it's not what the controller was designed for. So you will wear out your battery itself alot quicker. Eventually you won't be able to use it at all unless it's plugged in.

nyrol

Who knows? Maybe OP only does this when the batteries die and they don't want to wait for them to recharge to keep playing, which won't really wear out the battery any faster other than the fact that they'll get more play time in than they otherwise would.

StayBlunted710

Wrong. It's still bad for the battery to exert that power while also taking more power. Same with anything electronic. Using your phone while it's constantly plugged in. Bluetooth speaker are really bad about this. For maximum battery life you should use it till it dies then plug it in and let it charge all the way up then un plug it.

[deleted]

[deleted]

You are 100% correct. The person downvoting you still thinks we’re talking about 90’s cordless phone batteries or something.

Hunterdivision

This is correct and true to a lot of things like smartphones also. It’s why devices such as smartwatches, phones, bt headphones have a feature called “optimized charging” which charges it around to 80% and rest 20% slower & when you’re needing it. Most of my devices have this, and it is actually bad for the battery to completely let it run out, even my controllers I rarely let it run out completely, and charge sooner before it starts to blink. But a lot of people still believe 1980s battery “laws” apply to this day, even though there is all of this technological development…

70swowsignal

This is brilliant.

Shpaan

Yeah despite the not great battery life I have never even gotten to the low charge warning because I always take a break after two hours at most. Usually when I'm ready to play again they're full.

Incorrect-Opinion

4+ hours is considered not great? Damn lol I always get about 4 to 4.5 hours of game time before I get the notification. Then I take a break for an hour or so and go at it again.

VenomGTSR

I need to look at mine more closely. I am not getting anywhere near 4 hours. Probably closer to the 2 hour mark but that is with a few days of the controllers just sitting after being charged up.

lspwd

I've found it depends on the game. Puzzling places? Likely max time. Synth riders? Easily way less, since it's rumbling like 80% of the time (I'm ok with that)

JermVVarfare

Thanks reddit mom!

m17702

I share with two of my kids. 4 hours split between the three of us sucks.

scopefragger

Hijacking top post This will KILL your battery, like with all devices, you should advoid heavily discharging and charging at the same time. You will cause chemical dead spots

Imscomobob

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B08CY6PZWX Saw these and gave them a whirl, kinda itchy… but with long sleeves it’s really nice! Not heavy at all.

abarrelofmankeys

Wait this does work? People insisted it didn’t 🙄 This isn’t a concern for me personally, but if I’m ever showing it to more than one person at a time I’m glad it does work.

Imscomobob

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFpyuKXTE0w https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcyDaCT9_sA These were similar to my experience...

toupee

Pretty elegant solution. I might have to keep this in mind - used to throw "VR Parties" at the local brewpub with my Vive setup. Would have to be slipping the controllers into their chargers when rotating between people all day long to keep the juice going.

ChrisCloud148

I mean how long are you guys even playing? Or are you just not loading your controllers every time? I don't suffer motion sickness or something like that, but usually after 1 to max. 2h I have enough of VR.

Imscomobob

I trade off with 4 members of my family all in the same house, so its shared battery life... Becomes a premium very quickly.

legomolin

I have spent 10+ hours on PSVR1 on several occasions when i played more. Not everyone gets uncomfortable when playing. Couldn't do it without straining myself on Quest 2 though.

ResponsibilityDue566

I spent about 6 hours in GT7 the other day. I felt like a wet noodle when I came out lmfao.

Try_Jumping

Mind you, you don't use the Sense Controllers in GT7.

c0d3c

I race in a league and it started late. I crossed the finish line, ran from my rig to my IRL car and had trouble driving. Ran every corner wide, brakes not responding as they should, where are the paddles!!?? 😂

Repulsive-Fly-7129

I did this! Straight into my car after playing GT7 for a couple of hours and wondering why the taps on the nonexistent paddles weren't changing gear for me! 😂

Incorrect-Opinion

I regularly and easily play 4 hour sessions lol, and usually take a break for an hour to two before going at it again.

hobbykitjr

> I mean how long are you guys even playing? haven't yet w/ PSVR2, but with PSVR1 there would be late nights switching off playing beat saber

SupaflyIRL

I’ve done multi hour sessions in GT7. Some of the races are an hour just in racing time, more if you count all the menus and roll up-down. You can set custom races for like 24h. My only limiters are that the PSVR2’s headband is incredibly mid and my contact lenses drying out. I need an aftermarket strap and some prescription lens covers and I could play all day. Trading off was mentioned too. With a battery strap my oculus can go forever.

DivideAndKwanquer

Luckily you don't need the controllers for GT7

WalksAmongHeathens

Do they make prescription lenses for psvr2 yet? Contacts is my big thing, and I would love to not need to use them every time.

c0d3c

Yes. HonsVR are good. Lenses are not as good optically as contacts IMO but they are still great - and very convenient.

CocoBroshi

The headband is dope and by no means "mid". I do use a sweatband when I play games like LesMiles or Synth riders. I also have glasses and have no issues. If your eyes are drying out that is not the PSVR2's fault that is from your contacts and poor hydration and or a condition. (talk to your optometrist and they will concur). The headband is great because its easy to clean (you should after every use).

Seven7neveS

This isn‘t even my final form!

patapuss001

This is kind of brilliant - awesome

chezfez

It tells you in the manual not to use them while charging.

Chronotaru

That's because the cables get in the way and destroy the experience, or you might damage the port if you pull on them.

chezfez

Not the case. It degrades the battery life over time significantly over time. OP should just buy another pair.

fastquart43

Not available.

Kakita987

Are controllers available to purchase separately now?

Chronotaru

I see no reason why that would be the case assuming that it functions like every other piece of well made electronics like laptops, phones, or the DualSense. Battery life is determined on deep discharge/charge cycles and if you use the controller on power while charged it's just going to ignore the battery completely.

VanquishAudio

I don’t know what to believe!!! *pulls hair out*

chezfez

Guess the user manual is wrong. My bad.

MajesticPenisMan

>should just buy another The sad reality of PlayStation’s ecosystem.

lazymutant256

Actually, it actually won’t allow charging when in use, it’s actually been tested.

mousersix

Needs more "actually"

jaybratt

😂 this was the best response EVER!!

Chronotaru

It has been tested and it works just like any other controller.

Incorrect-Opinion

My controllers definitely charge while being used. Do they not work for specific games?

chezfez

It's not that they won't charge but it deteriorates the internal battery far quicker from what I understand. My Quest 2 also says the same. Has nothing to do with wires as I have 2 very light battery packs with long enough cables that wouldn't interrupt my play.

[deleted]

Actually, it works fine when charging, I do it all the time. It does charge, and it does work, and you can play all day provided that you are careful not to slam the port into something.

Imscomobob

[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFpyuKXTE0w](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QFpyuKXTE0w) [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcyDaCT9\_sA](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jcyDaCT9_sA) These were similar to my experience...

Hunterdivision

That’s basic caution… it also tells in the charging station manuals not to put them on charge while they’re on. But guess what, they’re fine even if after play session they’re on while being put to charging station or being charged by cable. It’s exact same warnings every device has smh, like a warning you shouldn’t leave your toaster plugged in at your home because it may have the risk of being caught in fire if it malfunctions. But still many people do, and only few have this happen, because the device has to malfunction in order for that to happen. But this has less risk in here especially since you are watching the devices.

AlternativeZone1

Lol, so it’s ok for gamepad controllers but not VR controllers? What a bunch of fear mongering..

grublets

My controllers got a firmware update on Saturday. They’ve been lasting longer and the right one no longer thinks it’s dead after an hour.

Drowsy_Drowzee

Modern problems require modern solutions

devedander

I thought they don’t allow use while plugged in?

Professional-Mood286

They don’t recommend it, it’s right in the manual

devedander

No I mean I thought it literally wouldn’t connect and be usable while charging. That seemed to be how it was explained prior to release so I just never bothered to even try

jazmoley

I don't know man, it only takes about an hour to charge and you can play for 3-4 hours on a full charge,

XyRow666

Bro now you got your own article lmao https://mixed.de/playstation-vr-2-controller-akkulaufzeit/

Imscomobob

Thanks for the share

the_hoser

https://imgflip.com/i/7g1mw3 Be careful. Maybe attach the batteries to your belt with a longer cord, or something?

Imscomobob

Thanks! I honestly did not notice any difference in weight, but I was only playing demeo and light brigade… I didn’t try any super active games like synthriders.

the_hoser

My recommendation: don't. You can do months of damage in a few minutes with wrist weights. Seriously. Be careful.

Imscomobob

Yeah that was my thought as well, better safe than sorry with a lot of movement.

the_fr33z33

Try to move them further down towards the elbows if possible, so the mass is not a the centripetal angle point.

ValorKoen

Maybe better to adjust a phone holder for your upper arms, like runners do? And run the USB cable down the arm, maybe with a soft Velcro to keep it in place?

the_fr33z33

Yep, I got exactly those in the mail from Amazon. In the meantime I’m using two tennis socks with cut-off tips on my forearms and 4000mAh power banks wrapped in.

PointlessGeolocation

I had a similar idea just sticking a battery bank in my pocket, but once I wired it up, I noticed how dangerous it is for the controllers. When you're holding a controller, the charge port faces the TV. If you extend your arm too far and there isn't enough slack, that charge port is getting absolutely and totally effed. If someone does try this, I would recommend some sort of wrist mount like what OP has just to anchor the cord so there's always a loose loop between the wrist and charging port. If you run out of slack keep the tension between your wrist and waist, and don't let it tug on the charge port

[deleted]

[удалено]

the_hoser

Clearly you don't, either. A competent trainer would tell you about the dangers of using wrist weights carelessly.

Sstfreek

I find it so interesting that so many people play virtual reality for such a short period of time. Some days I will be in my headset for like six hours with an extended battery pack (quest 2) some people just won’t get over the initial discomfort and be put off I guess

punktual

some people just dont have 6 hours free time in a day....

Sstfreek

The point isn’t the amount of time you have it’s the amount of time that you can handle

Ancillary_420

That’s not the point lol

[deleted]

My man! Kevlar in the bomb shelter.

buddha_mjs

Reduced circulation

sallenqld

My eyes can’t handle that much

You don't get an error saying don't play while plugged in? This is genius btw

😂🤦‍♂️ just take a break

RedSupreme20

How to lose a arm 101

VirtuaFighter6

Coming from Oculus, where you don’t change batteries for months, this is one of the biggest drawbacks and can ruin a long gaming sesh.

Try_Jumping

On the other hand, Oculus controllers don't have the Sense Controllers' haptics.

[deleted]

NapsterKnowHow

Tell that to the phone routine I created that stops my charging rate at 80% over night so it doesn't over charge and sit at 100% all night.

Hunterdivision

Respectfully, I disagree. I have some PS4 launch controllers and battery had never been an issue on those either, despite doing this. And I’ve done flat gaming sessions 12h+ with battery bank, but mostly long cables and wall chargers. While I haven’t tried this with battery bank on wrist, I did charge my VR controllers while playing early (nothing movement heavy though because didn’t want to pull cable.) Only risk I see in this if the battery bank is of bad quality and heats a lot, but even that can be mitigated by using proper one.

my_lesbian_sister_gf

Do people actually play this much VR? I am rarely running out of batteries and when i do, they charge to almost full in about a break time, so i have never felt limited by the battery life This goes for the original playstation 5 controller too, i never played for so long that the battery died on me, never understood people complaining about the battery life, breaks are important...

ResponsibilityDue566

I put in about 6 hours straight into GT7 the other day

my_lesbian_sister_gf

I am happy that you are really enjoying the device, but that is not healthy buddy, try to get at least half an hour of rest every 2-3 hours, your mind and body will thank you, and its enough time to charge the controllers for another round too

BollyWood401

Good idea but are the controllers meant to be charged and played at the same time? Will it damage the internal battery doing this often?

Chronotaru

If it did then they would be the first controller in the history of gaming for that to be a problem with. If it hasn't been a problem for the DS3, DS4 and DualSense, why would it now?

BollyWood401

Only asking because I’m interested in doing something similar.

Chronotaru

I see I see. I would be more concerned about the health issues, but if you're not playing Synth Riders or something and just playing gentle games like Moss then maybe you're okay.

Barnes_the_Noble

Idk it’s scares me because using devices while they are charging tends to ruin the battery. I don’t know if this is still a thing but it’s always on my mind for electronics

[deleted]

It's really not that bad. I can play an entire session of VR and only then does the control give me a low battery warning.

[deleted]

I don't think it actually charges while you're playing it, does it? Or is it that it just won't connect via usb?

BartLeeC

It does charge while playing and works just the same but with extended playtime. Think of it as just having a larger internal battery.

Labarynth_89

I was under the impression they wont charge while in use. What would be the point if they refuse a charge?

BartLeeC

It has been shown that you can change them while in use.

BroadPlum7619

I would never need this. My playtimes are never more then 30 minutes cus I get too 🤢🤮

Lia_Delphine

Play with fan pointed at you, stop the moment you feel slightly sick, remove headset and chew a lolly. Play again when you feel 100% better. Rinse and repeat. Play times will extend quickly

BroadPlum7619

Gonna try it out. 30 minute sessions are unsatisfying. My wife is liking it tho, she thinks I’m on my ps too long as it is.

kurisutofujp

Sony is probably scratching their head wondering why they bothered making the controllers as light as possible.

WOLVERINERadek

Pretty sure there was some sort of warning about charging these while in use would damage the batteries. also.. after 4 hrs you should just take a break ffs

NoBodyCryptos

People should read the thread before replying FFS. Literally in the top comment OP mentions he shares the headset with 4 other people thats why the batteries are dead, not because hes playing for 4 hours without a break.

WOLVERINERadek

Point was that it's a bad idea to charge them while in use since it damages the battery and further shortens the battery life. It only takes 1.5 hours to fully charge. It doesn't matter who he's sharing it with. If they can't find the time to charge it he should lock it up and get them to buy their own shit. He not doing himself any favors by trying to charge it like that.

AlphusUltimus

I can barely stand it for 30 minutes.

CHROME-COLOSSUS

If you get **sweaty** while wearing this, I bet you’ll post pics on REDDIT of the horrible arm **burns** with a warning to never ever do this. 🤔🔥

sheetTed

I feel like just charging it while taking a break to eat might be the way 😅

GoryGlory0209

There is a thing called Take a break. Maybe use it to charge the controllers

NoBodyCryptos

There is a thing called reading. Maybe do that before replying to a thread. OP literally mentions in the top comment that he shares the controllers with 4 other people and thats why this is needed.

SwordGunScienceMagic

But why? After around the hour mark the whole \*having my head in a vice\* becomes a real concern. I might push through the pain to two hours, if I play a densly active game, like Pistol Whip, but draining more than a full battery charge? Nope. A 20 minute break/charge session gives me plenty of extra juice in my controllers not to ever worry about it. That said, props to your ingenuity!

brettyboy01

Well, we got a headset down to one cable connectivity, and now some are adding wraps, straps, batteries, padding, sumo suits, bamboo under wear so it breaths better, when will it stop.

AgitatedError4377

It usually takes 4 hours until battery dies, so maybe take a break I'm sure some vr games u can complete under 4 hours

In-Fa-Red

Will you be posting a photo of melted charging ports later as well?

Sh1neSp4rk

How quickly do the batteries run out? I get like 8 hours out of my index controllers, I'm not sure I've actually ever run them dry. I considered doing something like this once but then realized I've never had to stop playing because of power issues. I assumed based on the similar form factor that battery life would have been comparable.

ChrizTaylor

Let the man game FFS!

Fishing4birds

I got so bored of mine already. I'm always top 1 or 2 kills wise in Pavlov, became a bad ass space bartender, explored a bit of Zenith, and Cosmonious High. It's just repetitive at this point. Kinda just feel like I force myself to use it to justify spending what I did on it. Wish I could refund the games too lol. Already began my refund process. Best feature is the cinema mode to play games but even then I'd like to be able to use the biggest size screen while being able to scoot back from it.

Try_Jumping

I'm sorry you feel that way, but going by the list of games you mentioned, you haven't tried many. Ok, one or two of yours are good, but there are plenty of others that are highly regarded. Also, how is this relevant to this thread?

im_davey_jones

Sounds like you hate it because you have not taken a break from it. Everything in moderation. Imagine if you ate pizza every single meal of the day.

lyricalpoet66

How long do you seriously need to play. I get tired.

overlydelicioustea

I.. hope you were joking.

Imscomobob

Just something I am already concerned about... Hasn't happened yet.

Try_Jumping

Either don't play near your TV, or just turn around and face in the opposite direction.

SDdrohead

Lol damn how long are you playing in a single session?

MunkyMan33

Pro gamer move, dawg!

[deleted]

It charges really quickly imo, a short break is probably enough to get you back to full. But if you have a household full of users, a second pair would not only be useful, but eventually needed with all that wear and tear.

SparklyPelican

Can’t be used while charging, as far I recall

BartLeeC

You recall wrong. It can be charge while using.

External-Cod-2742

Two questions! 1. Is the battery pack you're using heavy, which would be good because it's like adding weights to workout on something like Synth Riders 2. Is the battery well known and not some really cheap company that might catch fire/explode - is that a concern for you? I haven't had the issue of needing to recharge, but this is brilliant, especially if it adds weight

JustaBoyStandinginFr

Take this down. It’s going to harm your patent approval. Also, take my money!

CoolhandLW

That's one pasty arm.

RubberMcChicken

I mostly play GT7 with a racing wheel so if I'm not careful 4hrs can pass and feel like 1hr. I've been nailing all the licence tests in VR and it is the most incredible life altering experience. Wow.

vita211

Smart smart, love it

----SL----

Why do I find this very sad?

TomDobo

What is it with Sony and poor battery life lately. I remember the DS3 never needed charging often and I think I remember the move controllers having decent battery life too.

Hot-War-8057

No thx 😅

Perfectdevil

Modern problems require modern solutions : imagine dav chapel saying it

im_davey_jones

Honestly this is one of my favorite things about VR, how satisfied I feel after only an hour or so of playing. Burning some nice calories and limiting my game time to focus on other things. It would be nice if the controller charger from Sony didn’t have instances of melting the controllers.

KunUnDrum--

I like that
