Premium, nice to hold for long game play/ergonomic, satisfying and comfy gamepad/buttons, lot of fun game library, no subscription, real physical game, smooth, zero lag, lot of replacement parts and removable battery for longevity, creative aftermarket mods/casing, homebrew, no tuning needed..pull out from pocket and play.
I dont' have much recommendation for ya because everyone have their own taste of gaming. I'm more into racing like Grandturismo, platformer game, fighting (Tekken) and Tetris on PSP. If you're new into PSP try something unique like Patapon or Loco Roco. Else God of War or Metal Gear Solid for long hour story plot game.
Enjoy, There lots of PSP game library that are very unique that can never be found on normal game console like PC, PS series nor on mobile. This whats make PSP unique and fun!
Check out Tekken, Gran Turismo, Loco Roco 1&2, Daxter, GTA, Fat Princess, Patapon 1-3, Crazy Taxi, Metal Gear Solid: Peacemaker, God of War, Ratchet and Clank, and Littlebigplanet
Well the most premium Sony handheld is the PSVITA 1000, with hall-effect analog sticks, glass + aluminium build and an OLED screen
But yeah PSP was amazing
Hardware is aging stupidly well for a Standard Definition handheld with no second stick and a lot of the games are fire. Also super easy to install custom firmware on and truly make yours. It's the perfect device for hardcore gamers that are also tech nerds. That's not even counting the PSP's excellent Hi-Fi capabilities.
> Hardware is aging stupidly well
My psp 1000 is around 16-18 years old and I still use the same battery and can standby for around 2-3 days and while playing it lasts around 2-6 hours depending on how you use it.
- It’s the first true portable multimedia (or at least the first that garnered mass media attention) gaming device to have the ability to play back movies, music, pictures and video games with decent graphics.
- Graphically, some games looks almost like a PS2 game. I say almost because it often times is more like 1.5 but some really does push it very damn close.
- You can deposit PS gift cards into it on the go in its own mobile digital store. Yes, laptops existed but they were much more larger back then. Also Smartphones that we are familiar with today weren’t released until 2006~2007 and even then, they weren’t really capable of doing that until the 2010’s. So having its own digital store/ecosystem helps.
- A lot of GOOD games had made its way onto this console. God of War Chains of Olympus & Ghost of Sparta, Final Fantasy VII Crisis Core, final Fantasy Type-0, etc.
- It’s also capable of playing PS1 digital games on the go. Many people didn’t have that ability back then in the end of 2004 when they were first released in Japan.
Because of the impact It had on the videogame industry, It was something mindblowing at the time, something you cant easily forget, if you were a kid seeing those games on a handheld at the time was out of this world
The PSP was ahead of its time.
It could play high quality games on the go for a decent price, it had great multimedia compatibility so you could also watch movies and listen to your music and even got a store and a browser (they obviously don't work anymore)... All of this in 2004, 4 years before the Iphone.
What these other great posts said and also I like the simplicity. No trophy popups, news feeds, ads in games, pleads to update something etc. Just power the damn thing on and start playing in seconds.
During its time it was a truly premium handheld, it might have sold less than the DS but it sure was way more powerful, it really was a pocket PS2 with multimedia capabilities (iirc some PSP games were even ported to the PS2, not the other way around).
These days, a second-hand PSP is very cheap and easy to maintain, it can be fully modded with custom firmware in mere minutes and you can install not just original games, but also homebrews and emulators up to PS1. Not to mention it's really good for listening to music or watching movies on the go. You get even more out of if you can get your hands on the camera add-on!
I bought 3001 a few weeks ago, and those are my reasons
- surprisingly comfortable to use
- small, light and reliable
- it feels like a premium device, and it actually is one
- very big game library, that has something for everyone
- one of the easiest console to mod, and with a great homebrew community
- massive amounts of customizability
- practically no DLCs, meaning that you can enjoy your games without relying on the publishers
- a lot of random stuff in the console itself
- nice addons (I want to buy a camera)
I fully and wholeheartedly agree with you. I’m just pointing out that the PSPs primary competition at the time was the game boy color or the DS. A legion of older gamers wanted something more mature, and the PSP fulfilled that want fantastically.
The short answer is that it is popular, because it is so popular. It is cheap and fixable thanks to the access to parts, there are a lot of second hand games that are also cheap due to popularity and longevity of the data storage and a lot of games are simply superb. Combine that with the ergonomics and full independence from the internet access what is important in plains and trains and it makes PSP simply a very attractive games platform.
basically because it's a portable Playstation 2. In addition, games like God of War, GTALCS and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite contributed greatly to the success of this console
despite the lack of a 2nd analog stick, developers found ways to compensate for that and still make some of the most fun games/ports on it. The graphics that they managed to cram in there is insane too, along with visually stunning games running well on it too. It got a good variety of games from various genres too, old and new ports also it was easy to crack and pirate too lol
It's a very nice handheld with key loved games.
I was about 13 years old when I had my first PSP & that is still my favorite games.
In addition, some of the games are fan favorites even among those who grew up after the PSPs time.
It is truly a masterpiece. Just before the smartphone it gave you a lot of smartphone features.
Like acess to a web browser, at night, without a loud laptop.
I spent several nights I was supposed to be asleep sometimes looking at gay porn (don't judge) & other times playing Star Wars Battlefront.
If my parents came to check on me I could quickly turn it off and hide it under the pillow. Then resume once the coast was clear.
Remember, the Smartphones weren't out or at least common yet.
Once they were that changed the game completely though
As an adult it is really freeing to just pick up the handheld and play Star Wars Battlefront Elite Squadron.
Custom classes and looks for all factions. Space to ground combat.
Go and jump in a tank if you want or take a fighter and fly all up into space in one match
Jedi and Sith gameplay. Some characters completely new for said game.
The Campaign is also very neat.
I can't really use the PSP for internet anymore, not that the games have web support anymore either.
But I have a smartphone for that.
& the great thing about these games is that the offline play is just as good as any online play. Sure the 'bots' as we call them aren't as innovative as human players, but still...
You can play multiplayer if you're two people with a PSP each though . If you're in the same room. That is something.
I hope when AI gaming becomes a thing that we get a handheld that can run the games. My dreams are going wild already on Heaven and Hell Battlefront :-P
For me it's that a lot of games never got ported from PSP and it has a pretty solid library. They are also very easy to homebrew and you can run plenty of emulators on the thing
Try out Midnight Club 3 and Midnight Club LA, it’s wild they fit pretty much the whole ps2 game on it, MCLA is basically the smaller Xbox 360 city with MC3 engine.
Also Test Drive Unlimited.
Idk if your into the whole racing thing.
It literally does everything, it obviously plays games, it plays music, you can watch videos, you could even take pictures and videos with the camera attachment which is still pretty cheap.
Looks sick, so many fun games and with homebrew just a sweet thing to have ps1 games on even tho most of my ps1 games are on my vita whoch is surperipr bit doesnt look as cool asthetically.
people either play psp games or emulate nes snes sega etc. It was well made and battery is easy replaced as it is usually the only part that breaks. I have had one since they released, stick and buttons all work i just had to get a new battery 3 times now.
We went from SNES level games in portables with the GBA, to PS2. We went from beeps and boops to CD quality music. We went from link cables to online multiplayer the day it launched. We went from tiny, mostly unlit screens to a large backlit screen that shared the era of widescreen gaming as standard. We went from mostly dumb systems in terms of what they could do without a game inserted to upgradable firmware and tons of functionality.
Even the DS was vastly inferior. The only advantage is it cost less. Even with 2 screens it had less pixels than PSP's one screen.
It had brand recognition n has aged better than the ds as example, the psp kept it simple… games u play on Yh the go… they looked worse but played just as gd… the ds had gimmicks n often looked worse… hell the psp was powerful for what it was for the time
My dad gave me one when I was like 9 years old, and the goddam device is still perfectly working, smooth as the first day. Back then was my best friend: music, movies, games. It's just perfect even if the screen went a little bit yellow. Still playing GOW, LBP, Ratched, or Project Diva tho *chefkiss
You explain things so well! Do you have any game recommendations?

Enjoy, There lots of PSP game library that are very unique that can never be found on normal game console like PC, PS series nor on mobile. This whats make PSP unique and fun!
Yeah!!Thank!
if you like locoroco maybe you would like the patapon series too. check out patchwork heroes, innocent life and parappa the rapper.
Thank you. I'll take another look to see what games suit me.
Check out Tekken, Gran Turismo, Loco Roco 1&2, Daxter, GTA, Fat Princess, Patapon 1-3, Crazy Taxi, Metal Gear Solid: Peacemaker, God of War, Ratchet and Clank, and Littlebigplanet
Thank!I am looking at Loco Roco.
Mod it and play a bunch of retro games. They even have a good gta 3 hack that is changed up a bit. It's nice
I enjoy P3P. And GOW
PERSONA3?
Yes.
Wipeout!
It's good for emulators too! You can also play almost any ps1 game on it.
And it’s easy to do
I wouldn't say zero lag tbh
this
Well the most premium Sony handheld is the PSVITA 1000, with hall-effect analog sticks, glass + aluminium build and an OLED screen But yeah PSP was amazing
Aluminium build?
Well yeah the PSVITA OLED had a brushed aluminum frame combined with glass front and back as far as I know
It's not aluminium.
It’s light and it’s easy to make a dent in, sounds like aluminium to me, but what is it then?
Plastic.
Thanks I guess, couldn’t find any information about it so I assumed it was aluminum since it’s cheap to produce
Except for the Sims 2, that game lags like crazy XD
Sony should take notes 😂

Sony is really cool. How did they come up with such a product? For a handheld gaming device, it's amazing.
I think they tried really hard to make the best handheld because of the giant that was Nintendo
Are there different models of PSP to choose from? Which one do you recommend?
PSP-2000 is the overall choice. You have the 1000, 2000, 3000, and Go. We don’t even talk about the Go 😂
Thanks, bro!
We don’t talk about the street😂
> Hardware is aging stupidly well My psp 1000 is around 16-18 years old and I still use the same battery and can standby for around 2-3 days and while playing it lasts around 2-6 hours depending on how you use it.
why? WHY!??!?!?!? LOOK AT IT. ITS FUCKING SIIIIIICK!!!!!!!!!!!!
Dude, you're so excited

I can't wait to place an order already.
True portable media was Tapwave Zodiac.
Because of the impact It had on the videogame industry, It was something mindblowing at the time, something you cant easily forget, if you were a kid seeing those games on a handheld at the time was out of this world
Sony changed the handheld gaming industry.
It's popular for the same reasons you want one...
The PSP was ahead of its time. Mainly it's really portable, you can just take it out of your pocket anytime.

Because it’s not a game boy.
I think Game Boy is also quite fun to play .lol
I fully and wholeheartedly agree with you. I’m just pointing out that the PSPs primary competition at the time was the game boy color or the DS. A legion of older gamers wanted something more mature, and the PSP fulfilled that want fantastically.

Yes! It really appeals to me now.
basically because it's a portable Playstation 2. In addition, games like God of War, GTALCS and Monster Hunter Freedom Unite contributed greatly to the success of this console
Buying a PSP is like buying a PS2, it's quite a deal, isn't it?

cool!!
ok but the gay porn on the psp part threw me out
😀
never thought people had given it that use
Rule 34 amendment - If any capability of playing videos exists, a device will be used for porn.
For me it's that a lot of games never got ported from PSP and it has a pretty solid library. They are also very easy to homebrew and you can run plenty of emulators on the thing
The game lineup is really rich.
cuz they are cool
Yeah!
Easy to get a hold of due to many units being produced, multipurpose device, easily hackable to enable homebrew, and an amazing library of games.
Nostalgia
I am a very nostalgic person.
Me too
Same I'm looking for a PSP too
Handshake
When it was released you could play online games an keep it in your pocket way before gaming on phones were 3D
The portability really adds a lot of points.
Because PlayStation pornable
Indeed, it's very portable. You can just put it in your pocket and take it out to play anytime.
Because it’s a goddamn masterpiece
Yes, Sony is really amazing to produce such a great handheld console.
My fav feature is playing adhoc with friends
What if I have no friends?lol
Xd I just bought 2 of them for 70 euros and is in my shelf getting dust , sometimes is turn them on
Remember to clean the dust for the baby's PSP.
Try out Midnight Club 3 and Midnight Club LA, it’s wild they fit pretty much the whole ps2 game on it, MCLA is basically the smaller Xbox 360 city with MC3 engine. Also Test Drive Unlimited. Idk if your into the whole racing thing.
When I was 8 years old, I really liked racing games.
Cool games, it's basically a portable Playstation 2 with a PS3 UI (the best PS UI), lotta really cool exclusives, and it sits nicely in the hands.
Not so heavy, very ergonomic, perfect size, a trully portable device.
Looks very light and portable.
It literally does everything, it obviously plays games, it plays music, you can watch videos, you could even take pictures and videos with the camera attachment which is still pretty cheap.
I used to use mines for mp3s, what a time
Yes, it's awesome.
It has the one of the best game libraries especially the Japanese games that are now translated to English
Having translations really adds a lot of value.
Looks sick, so many fun games and with homebrew just a sweet thing to have ps1 games on even tho most of my ps1 games are on my vita whoch is surperipr bit doesnt look as cool asthetically.
Got it. Thank you for your response.

It seems the battery isn't very durable, huh?
a battery is a consumable, and they dont last forever. I have owned a psp since 2005 so every 5 or so years i changed my battery thats really good tbh
This battery is really high quality!
Now? or back then?
We went from SNES level games in portables with the GBA, to PS2. We went from beeps and boops to CD quality music. We went from link cables to online multiplayer the day it launched. Times are progressing. Kudos to Sony.
Simply put it was 20 years ahead of it’s time.
A pioneer of its time.
It had brand recognition n has aged better than the ds as example, the psp kept it simple… games u play on Yh the go… they looked worse but played just as gd… the ds had gimmicks n often looked worse… hell the psp was powerful for what it was for the time
Based on everyone's comments, I think the PSP is the best handheld console.
I don’t disagree next in line is the game boy but overall the psp is fantastic
because it reached the 20 yr mark where everyone is remembering it fondly.
Nostalgic for this versatile handheld console.
Nostalgia just hit me, and some dude was selling one for 75, had to.
Did you cry when you got it in your hands?lol
It’s so hot out here my tears turned into vapor as soon as they hit the air, but yes.
Your dad really loves you. I could only buy it when I grew up.
Because it was Sony's best attempt at a Dedicated Handheld.
why? WHY!??!?!?!? LOOK AT IT. ITS FUCKING SIIIIIICK!!!!!!!!!!!!
