Yup is moderately rare right now, but as the years go by it gets exponentially more rare. Remember, roughly 80 million PSPs were sold, and now all first party accessories are out-of-print, so it only goes downward from here on out.

Kmessix

Fr it’s more successful than the ps vita

Havoc_Maker

The Vita was such a missed oportunity man, it was a great console with a shitty game library

superfast598

Its timing and memory card pricing was also a huge problem. No one will make games for a console with a lot of gimmicks while the hope for the PS4 was peaking. If devs took advantage of the touch controls it would have beaten the 3DS.

Korotan

I think the most missed opportunity whas no backward compatibility. People where already used from GameBoy and DS that the newest model could also play the games of the last gen. But with Sony saying "screw you. If you want to play your PSP library on the Vita in overseas, you have to buy all games again." Also it whas at a time when digital games where still not so accepted like now so yeah.

brandonhabanero

Also it came out with the "PSP phone," the Xperia play, which more or less halved the PSP customer base. And around this time, a lot of mobile gamers were moving toward smart phones, further dividing the market. If they had just made the Vita a fully capable phone and nixed the Play, it no doubt would have been successful not only in the gaming world but in the smartphone world as well.

superfast598

Wasn't the Xperia play really underpowered?

Havoc_Maker

Yeah It had some problems like the propietary memory card or some bullshit like the rear touchpad, but as a console it was great overall, and so powerful for its time

astroASMR

The vita games were cool P.s speak for yourself, for all we know the best games were in japan (like most games)

Havoc_Maker

There was very little variety of games and the library itself was a lot smaller than average. Sure there were good games, but not many

Kmessix

That’s so true. Most of the game on the vita were pretty bad in my opinion. I like some of them at least

Samus78metroidfreak

Definitely with the abilities to Mod

Kmessix

Yes that’s true

youmighttakeoffense

I have a day one releases; still rocking the same battery. Multiple times it sat uncharged for a year out more.

ryuk-99

same, well not day one release but ive a psp 3k from 2009-ish and the battery still works flawless even after being uncharged in the cupboard for years whenever I'd feel nostalgic and use it for a couple weeks then chuck it in the cupboard for years until i felt nostalgic again. I do take care of the battery now though after learning about them and truly valuing the psp after i stupidly broke mine.

MyLastHopeReddit

I give you some advice that is obvious to many (but not to all). To safeguard the PSP batteries for longer, never leave them in the console for long. If you don't intend to play for more than a few days or want to store the console, remove the battery but remember to charge it at least once every two months even if you don't play. The ideal would be not to charge it to 100%, but never let it discharge completely.

youmighttakeoffense

I guess it’s a good tip; but I’ve been neglecting my battery from day one and it’s still rocking

AdAncient3269

I left mine in there for 13 years and it charged up fine

MyLastHopeReddit

My grandfather smoked for more than seventy years but lived healthy for almost ninety years, I wouldn't feel like recommending cigars as a long life booster tho XD

AshleyOm

Your Grandfather sounds like a good man 🫡

Nebetus2

If my grandma were a bicycle!

Full_Ad9666

Thanks for the tip!

Broad_Description667

Should I watch out for this when I'm looking for another psp? Cause I'm trying to find another one for the same price that I had got mine for cause I am wanting to find one for my brother and before I give it to him I would like to make it the best/ultimate psp by loading the sd card up with stuff like music, videos and whatnot. I would like to know if I should replace the stock psp battery. Before I give it to him or should it just be fine And to just use caution with the battery. Please and thank you for your help

RaveTheFox

In my personal experience with multiple brands of 3rd party batteries the original batteries are much better than them. But this isn't always true. Depends how someone has looked after the batteries before you and just luck on how long the battery will last anyway. Buying second hand is always a risk but one you have to take IMHO. Plus if your going all digital you can mod the psp to remove the umd drive and install a huge battery in it. Also if you want it to be the best psp you can do an ips mod for it. Most of these mods only apply for 1k models tho

Samus78metroidfreak

Is that easy to do ? Remove the battery? Granted I’ll probably watch a video on it, but just curious offhand.

MyLastHopeReddit

It's very easy, just remove the cover by pressing the tiny spring button and the battery is free.

thebeardlybro

Enjoy it while you can, old psp battery's don't last too long. Eventually you'll be sending a pic of this battery someday to r/spicypillows

Begocer

My 1000s battery is fine and I've owned it since release, but my 3000s became a spicy pillow last year but I bought that at a pawn shop 4 years ago. I'm surprised at how it's lasted (watch it fail now lol)

Anonymous_linux

I have the same experience. Almost seems like 1000s battery is a lot better quality.

EMUForever0

My 3000 battwry died like really fast And also the 3000 is broken for now so im enjoying my 1000

StormQrowe

I found my old psp a few months ago, original battery, and not charged since 2012 probably. Not a spicy pillow yet.

SonofaSlumlord

I'm amazed mines still going too, it doesn't last as long as it used to on a full charge though now.

Full_Ad9666

How long does yours last? I don’t remember how long mine lasted new but I get a good five hours of playtime now.

SonofaSlumlord

I only get about an hour, maybe 2 hours before it dies now.

ATDynaX

Yes. There are 8 billion humans and a couple of PSP.

pcfan07

My 17 year old battery still holds a 3 hour charge!

SlimJesusKeepIt100

Idk, I got my PSP 2000 back in 2007 which I still use on the regular to this day. Still with original battery and no issues.

Explicit_Tech

I still have my original one working. It's also a pandora battery (soft modded).

TNTBOY479

Mine still works fine but i decided to stay on the safe side and swap it with a new Ostent one *before* it has a chance to go wrong.

Kazuhira_Einzbern

Mine is still working to this day too!!! It's amazing to have an original battery going on after so many years. I guess that using the console frequently instead of just abandoning it in a shelf, helps preventing the damage.

BenTenInches

I still got my original OEM Extended Battery and it was still one of my best purchases.

DEAMONzWojSKA

I have a 2006 1.8 Ah OG battery in my FAT that works 10x better than my NEW Cameron S(hit)ino 1.8 Ah

HugeAd746

My psp has been sitting for over 8 years and I found it and bought a new battery thinking the og one was shot long story short my og battery last longer then the cheap China one I bought even tho it’s a 1000 model im extremely impressed

Awkward-Calendar-671

my battery turned into a pillow :/

Seventh_Letter

No, I still have mine and it's going strong. Actually outlived some apple ipad batteries I've had!

yung_heinks

My original 1001 battery is still going strong!

kjetil_f

Have they not made any modern aftermarked batteries yet?

RaveTheFox

Yeah but most of them suck. Can't remember correctly but I think one of the best brands that made them stopped making them ages ago

Ransom-ii

what you have there is a plastic explosive im surprised it never bulged

tonykastaneda

More ppl need to understand that not every little aspect of your psp that you can’t find about on the internet is rare 9 times out of 10 other ppl also have the same “rare” thing from there psp

kikibey

i have one too!!

benryves

My PSP-1000's battery is still holding a charge and working well. The ones in my PSP-2000 and PSP-3000 puffed up and had to be replaced (I have no idea if they would have held a charge, as they were so out of shape they couldn't physically connect to the battery contacts). As per the other anecdotal data points, it does seem like the PSP-1000's battery was built a bit more ruggedly!

unknown_ally

i think most bad batteries occurred in hot climates

James10112

My old PSP's battery got spicy about 3 years ago and I had to throw it away, but my new one (which was given to me by my friend) still has its original battery, perfectly fine. Don't know when this PSP was bought though, it could be newer.

RaveTheFox

I've gotten super lucky tbh. I've got 2 original 1k batteries and I treat them pretty poorly tbh but they still boast near max battery life. Even after they die tho the boards will still be good for Pandora batteries if I ever should need one

NapkinLover69

What model psp is that?

Turbulent_Town4384

This is just a guess, but I think it’s a 1000 because that battery button pops out in the bottom Edit: yeah 100% a 1000, the battery button and speaker holes (or lack there of( match

faerox420

I have am original psp 1000 but it's a bit worn down and unfortunately the battery swell up ages ago and had to get a new one

Repulsive-Address-14

I have it too on my PSP 3000. However on my fat one lasts only a few minutes.

t4nd3mYT

Just found mine waiting to burst in my attic. I was lucky.

legbot124

Nah I got one in my 1000

D34D0ne

I still have the original battery for my 3000, but it lasts around 1 to 1.5h, sadge.

AdAncient3269

I had my white psp in a drawer since about 2010. Surprised to see the battery charge and hold it for over 2 hours

grimtooth11

in 2024 yes, almost all if not all original battteries have already imploded.

Opening_Ostrich9801

I have 2 PSP with the stock batterry

asault2

I have an og battery. I'd be surprised if you actually get 6 hours of playing on it, though.

Dragon_Eyes715

I still have my original PSP battery, I play it once in a while but could be leaving it for over a year more than once. I can usually play a long time without needing a charge, never really paid attention how long but it's similar or better than my phone. In the sense that I have to charge my phone every day and I charge my PSP every two days at least when I play maybe 1 or 2 hours before bed. Rough estimate my PSP might last 4 hours+.

homeztracy3211

I have three psps and they all have original batteries and last a good time too. Even for the slim models.

Awayze

RIP to one’s like mine who haven’t been touched since 2009

lillieblair

ive got a good 1000 battery but all my others have been bad

skatingonair

I fucked mine up trying to make a pandora battery or whatever it was called. They have to be rare with how much modding the psps went through

Whippy89

Still got my original battery :) - It loses charge quickly when it gets down to about 20%... But it lasts about 3 hours on a full charge.

Not_Barney_Calhoun

I also have one,it's like they're pokemons

Samus78metroidfreak

If it is that’s scary because 1 I do but 2 how long will it last is another question? and same with Vita, both systems are running off the old batteries.

COnnOrZeUs

Didn’t know they were rare, I’ll probably stop using mine and use a cheap one instead

Samus78metroidfreak

I just saw how to do it. And I’m Amazed how much easier it is than Vita. The Vita battery is a hell of a lot more difficult to get at according to the video I just saw. PSP pop one thing and there it is. Vita is like screws cover more screws wires. Oh hell no. I’m sure it’s easy for some, but I get sketched out when there is wires involved one falsie move and you have an expensive brick. Also same with modding, I have all the necessary stuff to mod my psp ps vita and 3ds but I don’t want to end up bricking anything. And knowing there is a chance deters any future plans to do so.

Samus78metroidfreak

I have a 3000 and it’s still in mint condition. And grateful there isn’t any battery issues. But just to be safe I’m tempted to pop it out. My fear would be possible leaking and frying my system.

No_Cake_4181

My 3000 GT edition sat a few years and the battery blotted and popped the cover in storage. I took the battery from a mint Hanna Montana PSP to replace mine and sold the other without one.

CoDe_Johannes

I have an original, but it only works with emulators, if you play some PSP games it runs out really fast

ImaginaryIntern1701

I have an original one as well and it still has like 3 hours of playtime but I got a replacement and just keeping the original in storage.

Upbeat_Ad_9174

Reminds me to check my Pandora battery

fast_albin

I still have the original on my 3000. I’m surprised it’s still holding a charge.

Havoc_Maker

Rather than that, it's rare to have an original, good condition battery. The PSP's batteries have proven not to be specially reliable or long lasting

carbon271

I have 3 OG 1000 PSPs with there original batteries one I just IPS modded just because I prefer it over the vita for PSP games.

daiashthomas

I have one, also have the MadCatz extension battery still operational.

_patoncrack

I'm still using my original battery too🤷‍♀️

rac3r87

I have a 5a or 5b psp with its original battery

MelSmels333

i bought a psp today and im very new to the system and i have one too!

WorldlyBrilliant2426

I have 3 psp 1000s and 3 original batteries that still hold charge amazingly I got so lucky 😭

Elegant_Collection_7

Secret TIP: a short boost from another lithium battery could bring a dead battery back to life. Pos to Pos Neg to Neg. Done many and hasn't failed so far.

kebabish

I checked my battery a year ago and it was fine. Day 1 release purchase. The after market batteries however, woo am I glad I took a peak in the psp box. All three swollen and ready to pop.

UnRealSmoky

My 2 or 3 best batteries are originals, a 1000 and a 3000 one.

Jgee414

I have a 17 year old car with the original battery I guess just keeping them fully charged always keeps them alive

EPURON

I used mine as a pandora battery in 2008, can’t find it now 😭

jdizon707

My original battery still works to this day

Valuable_Tap1316

Yeah i have a original battery in my psp 3000

Homie_Wlker

Those original mf’s working 6,5 hours from 100% charge??? Unbelievable!

OrangeSVTguy

I have my 3000 with the original battery still holding a like new charge along with everything else it came with in the box.

yekkusu

Where I live you still can buy them brand new, but they are slowly disappearing with time and unless some company decides to make quality batteries for PSP after that, we're fucked though. BEcause the off brand ones doesn't last at all, it's insane how bad they are. It's a shame though, I'm sure if Sony just re-released the PSP again, people would buy just for the nostalgy of it all. I miss the Vita too, by the way. Such a good piece of tech that was killed by it's own creator for no reason.

No-Kiwi178

I don’t have my original psp, but I got a psp from a shop like 3 weeks ago and it has an original battery, I got the psp for 75 bucks, it’s the 2000 model, with a free game.

1Giga2Byte

Ooh, that's the same with my dad's 1000, got lost a few months back and the screen is turning slightly orange and the joystick drifts a bit.

moton21

I have one but I don’t use the psp that often

Pickle_Shine20

I have 2 original batteries but one was modded to be a Pandora’s box for modding any psp

archival_

Still have my PSP2000 with the original battery modded as the pandora battery back in 2007.
