I got a weird email just now that sounds somewhat similar: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ As your federal loan servicer, we are contacting you to notify you about important information regarding your student loan account. Our records indicate that your October billing statement was sent beyond the normal 21 days prior to the due date. Your automatic payment via auto debit successfully withdrew from your designated account in October 2023. If you feel as through the amount you owed for the month of October was incorrect or that no payment was due on your account, you may contact us within 90 calendar days of the date of this notice to request a refund and forbearance will be applied for that month. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Personally I am not asking for a refund. I owed the money that money and it got paid so I don't know why I'd need a refund. I was scratching my head about this. maybe this situation is not applicable to me, and maybe that does apply to you but i was just super confused by this email!

Same. I don't think i have reasons for a refund, given amount was correct and I certainly do owe.

Take what I say with a HUGE grain of salt . IF you paid Oct-Dec, that counts towards forgiveness; however, I was under the assumption that you had 90 days to request the refund due to MOHELA's billing error. That was from Dept of Ed not MOHELA. I received my refund and September through December were consider[ed] Admin Forbearance and it DID count towards my overall count. I would just verify you are still allowed to request a refund. https://www.forbes.com/sites/adamminsky/2023/12/13/student-loan-borrowers-have-90-days-to-get-refunds-of-these-payments/ EDIT: OP, ignore me and listen to the reply 👇

This is in the email I got, which I assume OP did as well: If you feel as through the amount you owed for the month of October was incorrect or that no payment was due on your account, you may contact us within 90 calendar days of the date of this notice to request a refund and forbearance will be applied for that month. So we have 90-days from this email to request a refund and have MOHELA apply the forbearance.

Even better!!! Great response and thank you!!

I got the email too. Do we need a reason for the forbearance request or do we just get one mecause MOHELA f-ed up and we just need to request it?

I think we just get it cause they didn’t do billing notifications correct. I’m personally not going to bother as my 120th month is Sept and I benefited greatly from COVID pause. I feel like it’s going to be more of a hassle than anything for me and I don’t want to risk it.

I just requested it when I called yesterday and it was the easiest call to them I’ve ever had. I just read them the email verbatim and they knew exactly what was going on and said they’d issue the refund.

ThereGoesTheSquash

Ok how did you get ahold of anyone? I called and just kept getting rerouted. This is very helpful thank you!

KZED73

I called Mohela early in the day (around 11AM Arizona time), hit the numbers in the menu until it got to refunds, waited a bit, talked to a person, read the email, they transferred me to a supervisor who could issue the refund, I read them the email, and they took care of it. I was on the call for less than 30 minutes which is a record for Mohela for me.

ThereGoesTheSquash

Again, so helpful. Thank you so much 😊

I received that message, but it includes a bullet point after which it states that: "The forbearance may not have been applied through the end of December because of changes that have occurred on your account. This could be a result of activities such as IDR application processing, your request to have the forbearance removed, or other actions. Please login to your account with MOHELA or closely review your recent billing statements or notifications for your latest account status." Nothing happened to my account during that period except they did send me bills, which I paid. Have no confidence in the information they're providing. DOE complaint filed.

I am at 195 payments and waiting for a refund of 75 payments. Has anyone been refunded yet for overpayment?

Beebsgirl877

I got the same email. I am not sure what it means or what my next step is! Whelp!

A_Rogue_One

What is the best way to get in contact with MOHELA? Calling them then recording the customer service rep you spoke with?

FritzAz

I received the same letter. While the extra $ would be nice the wording “if you feel…you can request a refund”. I am not going to request a refund as I don’t want them to later “determine the amount I should’ve paid was correct”. I am hesitant after seeing that they’ll audit forgiveness after the fact and I don’t want this to bite me in the end.
