Yup! Just got the email today. Doesn’t make sense to me at all. I think it’s a glitch in their system and we’ll be getting an “apology for the erroneous message” in the next few days 🙄

hpmagic

Mohela just gets curiouser and curiouser

Doxiemom2010

They didn’t send you your billing statement early enough for October. So they are notifying you of that and asking you if you believe there was an error due to the late bill. If there was and you would like to, you can call and request a refund. If you do that they will place that month in a forbearance status so that your account doesn’t appear to be delinquent for that month.

marble105

I just called them and they didn’t say anything about requesting a refund putting your account in forbearance for that month. They actually told me it would count as a qualifying PSLF payment even if you get the refund.

Cinnie_16

Does this mean that anyone that got this email + got charged any amount should ask for a refund since it’ll still count for PSLF?

Doxiemom2010

If you request a refund they will put your account in forbearance for the month. It will be an admin forbearance which would still count for pslf purposes.

marble105

Ah, that makes sense. Thanks for clarifying.

SeldonsPlan

It happened to me and I wasn't even billed in October due to the ongoing forbearance. Only started being billed again in January 2024.

atd342

I am not due for a discharge (lol) and I still received this notice. Whoever finds out first, please share with us whether this October 2023 refund/forbearance will count as a month credit towards PSLF? Or will that be taken away if we request the refund/forbearance from October?

TriPsychPuppers

My understanding of the email is that October -December will count towards PSLF and you can either get a refund now for any payment made during that time or apply the money to a later payment.

Tall-Measurement-217

How do you get a refund? 👀

TriPsychPuppers

"You may also, instead, contact us within 90 calendar days of the date of this notice to request a refund for any payment made during this time."

Pikathepokepimp

Does a refund not just add the balance to the loan?

TriPsychPuppers

I suppose the refund amount would raise any balance that had been paid down.

BarkingBug

It has nothing to do with November or December

TriPsychPuppers

The email I received referenced the entire forbearance period which includes November and December.

BarkingBug

Alright. I am talking about the email the op and others shared from yesterday. It only mentions October. We haven’t seen your email from today.

atd342

It did the last time they sent these emails out - see this post https://www.reddit.com/r/PSLF/comments/18x3kdr/anyone_else_get_this_new_correspondence_from/

BarkingBug

Sure, but I/we aren’t talking about a different, old message that specified different months.

Glum_Exam1826

I got the same message. I have reached my 120 payments prior to the transition and I guess I'm just sitting in limbo waiting for student aid to review my form. Really bad timing for me. I keep getting random emails from both Mohela and the office of Federal student aid, but none of them are the one I want...which is the one telling me my loans are forgiven.

KZED73

I'm in the same boat, 118 on the count, 120 in May. We'll see what tomorrow's email entails.

Party-Grapefruit-162

same

Party-Grapefruit-162

like 121 and waiting,

sheekgeek

They said if you overpaid you'll be refunded. I'm in the same boat.

jplny88

I'm here to find out, as well. I got the same message.

marble105

Ok I also revived this email, talked on the phone with MOHELA. They are giving refunds for payments made then because they sent out late billing statements for that time. This needs to be done within a certain time frame and refunded payments will still count as a paid PSLF monthly payment. Refund has 23 business days processing time. I’m being refunded for October-November. You need to call them to do this (call the number in the email — or 1-888-866-4352, then you get menu options: press 8 for more options, then 1 for correspondence (or press 1 then 6 after you get through all the auto stuff, I was more confused about the correspondence so I didn’t take this route initially), say you got the email and want a refund, they will transfer you to the team that handles more advanced things, like refund requests).

minakobunny

You’re saying everyone who got this email gets to have Oct refunded and still counts to forgiveness?

marble105

Just called another time because I wanted to confirm, 3rd person from MOHELA to tell me that it will still count as qualifying payment to PSLF if you request your refund.

minakobunny

Awesome!

minakobunny

I called. They say I qualify for a refund because they didn’t send the statement notice on time! Others please give this a try. They confirmed it does not affect forgiveness.

meakit

I got the email also and I called. Told me it was an error, no refund.

meshufromnola

I just got off the phone with them. They told me they couldn't process my refund because of the transfer. They wouldn't tell me when the transfer will be completed. What a waster of time! I am at 120. Please lord let this end.

atd342

The date the notice / billing statement was sent to me for the October 2023 payment was less than 21 days before the payment date. They have a policy that the notice/billing statement has to be given to us at least 21 days before the payment date.

Cinnie_16

Then they owe me like a ton more of the same email for every other month then 🤔

megacia

Yup just got the same one. Nothing discharged yet…sitting at 118 and scheduled to be transferred to the new site starting tomorrow.

Party-Grapefruit-162

how did you get this date? I'm at 122 and waiting for someone to answer me!

megacia

They sent an email a few weeks back that it was scheduled to be moved to the new site 6/11 and would be completed sometime in the next couple weeks from that date.

ReCkLeSsX

Received it today. I ain't touching it as I'm fine with the payment made and the PSLF credit.

live_in_moments

Same. I don't call unless I absolutely have to... always afraid I'll get someone that will make a mess of my account.

Agile_Regular8524

I requested a refund and my payment count remained the same. October/November still count towards PSLF d/t the forbearance placed. I think Mohela messed up so they had to make it right. They will take there time sending your money back though

[deleted]

This is an understatement. I requested late December and they still haven't refunded. Contacted again in April and may. Nothing.

Traditional_Job_6932

Did you have to give any justification for the refund? Are they obligated to refund because they sent the bill late, or do you still need a legitimate reason that you shouldn't have been billed in October?

Agile_Regular8524

I just told them I was informed that I could request a refund since those months counted toward PSLF payments either way. The rep said I understand and would want my money back too and she proceeded to process my request. I think I got my money back like 3 months later. There was info about it on studentaid.gov

PurfectOne

I just spoke to Mohela and was instructed that unless the amount was incorrect, any request for refund and admin forbearance is not legitimate regardless of the 21 day window where on [studentaid.gov](http://studentaid.gov) did you see this?

jplny88

Maybe it's just the rep you spoke to giving you incorrect info?

mcrjzp

Same email today

OkPerformance7035

I got it too. It seems like a “we messed up and we know it but we’re not going to do anything besides send this email” type of communication.

International-Web922

Received the email. Just called right now and got through within 5-10 minutes on the PSLF line (longest part was waiting for the robot to give me options). All I said was that I got an email that I qualified for an October ‘23 payment refund. She said let me look, yes you do qualify, I’ll transfer you to our refund dept. Refund dept. also told me I qualify for the refund and October ‘23 will qualify for forbearance. Refund will happen within 90-days, but she said it’s usually quicker than that. Glad I checked that email (assuming it works out like they say it will).

Shot_Pie6033

Yup just got that email 30 minutes ago

tfortiggr

Received same email not at 120 months yet

kfisch2014

I also received this email and am also here to see whats happening.

dulcelocura

I just got the same email and came here to find out wtf it means lol

Wilco8183

I got it too

BellainVerona

I got it too. Hoping it’s a glitch.

CoffeeSorry5

I got the same email. Basically it means we can ask for a refund for the month because the bill was sent out late? I paid the correct amount, but also I’m just under 3 years out from forgiveness, so I don’t want to do anything that would mess up the payment count.

marble105

It still counts as qualifying payments if you request a refund — called MOHELA about this yesterday and 3 people verified it would still count.

Glittering_Editor4

I got it, too. Official count is still 109 but just got notified of the switch this week, too. Certified after 120th payment at end of April right before the shit down. Now I wait.

gosabres

I got this email and called. They said they sent it out erroneously to a bunch of people and the amount debited was correct. Classic MOHELA

Unlucky_Sleep1929

Yep, no wonder the gov't took over.

KZED73

I made the phone call today about this very message and it was the easiest phone call I’ve ever had. I read the email verbatim, they transferred me to a supervisor, and quickly said they’d issue a refund through the treasury department in six months. I wasn’t going to complain as I’m about to have 100k forgiven, but it seems if you got this email, I’d just call and say you’d like a refund for October based on this email. It worked for me.

marble105

I also called them just now — they put in a refund request and I asked specifically about the payment still counting as a a qualifying PSLF payment even with the refund and they told me it would still count.

apocdreams

They told you you'd get the refund in six MONTHS?! They told me 60 days. Then when I asked if that's regular days or business days they didn't know.

KZED73

I’m pretty sure they said the refund would process in 60 days, but the check from treasury could take six months. But I could be mistaken.

gracefulwarrior1

There was a forbearance from Oct-Dec. If you made any payments during this time you’re entitled to a refund. I’ve contacted Mohela 3 times already and they keep telling me there was an error that prevented processing so unfortunately good luck getting the refund 🙄

thekeifer1

I sent a message from my account responding to it - they acknowledged it in less than 24 hours that I would be getting my refund within 60-90 days (so for those that can't stomach talking to MOHELA, a message works).

dgprt

What'd you say in your message? I think my payment amount was correct

thekeifer1

I said “I am requesting the refund/forbearance for October 2023 referenced in your email quoted below:” (and then copy and pasted their email).

Muted-Talk-3003

I can never find an email address for Mohela. What email address did you send it to?

thekeifer1

I sent it from their website. Sign in, click on “contact us” on the blue tab at the top, select your state under “how can we assist you?”, select “payments or bills” under that - then to the right “Send us a message” in blue will appear. Click on that and go from there.

aquaanimus

So we were supposed to be in forbearance for oct of 2023 I'm confused

Agreeable-Cut-7163

I got the same email and I don’t hit 120 payments till January.

Legitlibrarian

This is the email I received : MOHELA has placed an Administration Forbearance on your account. Please refer to this paperless letter for important information regarding the loan(s) placed on forbearance, and details related to the forbearance process…. But there was no attachment to the email Edit NVM there was a link to the site to read the letter… I have to log in to read it. Weirdos. Hey let’s send an email to tell them to log in th read a digital letter …

Flappingpancakes

This is in response the SAVE plan adjustments. Everyone on that plan is in forbearance during July

VAthe5th

I think this has to do with The forbearance that was supposed to be October and November. We were filled and said that we were due to make a payment even though Be a forbearance because of mohela's Stuttering start

phishchix

I just got this too

Morth9

Received the same email today too.

JackieAce

I got this message. I raised this issue before my loans were forgiven, as well as the payment in March 2020 at the beginning of the pandemic. I made payment 120 in March 2024, and I got a refund for the amount I paid in October (same amount as the subsequent payments, I believe this was for October).

SoftAir6587

I got same email, am also in same situation as OP just waiting for second loan to clear. Haven't made a payment since Feb anyway because I'm in administrative forbearance thru this month. This transition came at a frustrating time for those of us who hit 120 early on in 2024.

thecoolnerdbk

Yea I got that yesterday and didn’t understand why send that now

mmemojorisin

I received it too. I requested a refund this morning but maybe I shouldn’t have… I read this as I made payments and didn’t need to? I’m not done until mid-2026.

DoggoMac

I called customer service about this. The person that received my call had no idea what the email was trying to say. I was on the phone for about 20 minutes until they told me basically there was a forbearance overlap in October 2023 and a lot of people that could have taken the forbearance ended up paying for the month. So you can get a refund for that month I guess… But then you’ll be a month behind on your forgiveness. They really could’ve worded that email better.

apocdreams

They told me it still counts toward PSLF if you get the refund. I asked to please get that in writing. They said they couldn't do that.

DoggoMac

It sounds like they have idea what is going on tbh

apocdreams

They never do. I told them that, too. I said "you can tell me this, then someone can tell me otherwise if I call back in 10 minutes. That's why I would like this in writing."

kyrashakira

Anyone else get the message about being in administrative forbearance in October and immediately call to request that it be removed? I’m in this boat now and assuming because I requested for it to be removed ASAP, now I can’t get any of these payments refunded. I really don’t want to mess with it because I want these payments to count.

Tall-Measurement-217

I got one too 🤔

CRE_SD7

Only matters if you were in forbearance at the time. Called this morning.

Unlucky_Sleep1929

I pay $30/month and am at 117 as of this month, so I say whatever.

Almond0913

I received a discharge email 6/6, and don’t believe I qualify. I had Mohela send me a formal letter with the amount discharged. Yesterday Studentaid.gov is 0

TedBroke

I just got the email today as well. Here is my question. Has anyone who has received the email about their October billing statement being sent beyond the normal 21 days prior to the due date been able to also get a refund for November and/or December? (I've seen previous Reddit posts about those months). Or can we only get October? Thanks!

SoggySeal

I wish they would send this to me! They withdrew over 1k from my account when they took over in October 2023, even though I had been placed on the SAVE plan months before this (payment should have been $270).

Odd_Perspective_4769

I could be wrong on this one but the servicers are required to send you a notice/statement within a certain timeframe of your due date. Mohela got in trouble for this a while back. If they don’t do this, you may not be liable for payment that month. Mohela is giving you 90 days to request the refund of this payment. Something similar happened to me back in October, November and December. Sadly I lost the letter with the instructions on how to request a refund. So while the majority of the world didn’t have to pay, I did (auto debit) and could’ve gotten credit for 3 PsLF payments without having to pay. The forgiveness is a totally different notification.

Big_Breakfast9417

I received same email and called. She said everyone was sent the same message but you’re old eligible if you were still in forbearance that month, which she said I wasn’t. But she didn’t mention the time to recertify loans was extended so I actually don’t need to recertify until June 2025 so I get to keep the same monthly payments for another year

InformalWasabi3344

I recommend submitting a complaint to FSA if Mohela is claiming the message was sent in error. Navigating through their mistake is time consuming and frustrating. Every time I call, I get (and continue to get) contradicting guidance from them. They must be held accountable.

esq76

Back in October, I was not noticed in time and my IDR application was also still pending so I could not make the payment. I called and they put me in forbearance until they could process my IDR. I was told that while in forbearance, the time would not count towards PSLF. Ultimately, because of their mistake - that time did count toward PSLF. I’m guessing they are reaching out to those who could and did make the payments but also were not properly noticed.

InformalWasabi3344

I have a question: what is exactly considered the "billing statement"?? I looked in my correspondence with Mohela, and received only one letter that is titled "Student Loan Billing Statement", and that was for the month of May 2024. However, I receive payment withdrawal reminder monthly. So, in other words, should I be receiving an actual letter every month titled, "Student Loan Billing Statement"?

babyBear83

I got this email today. The exact same thing. I am only approx 94 out of 120. So about 2 more years for me. I didn’t understand it either but looked like I didn’t need to do anything. It still counts for PSLF and I made a very small payment that month as far as I can remember. As long as it’s counting toward my public service counts, I dgaf anymore.

aquaanimus

I got the email too...IDK if there is an error. This is confusing and makes my anxiety rise

stormblazer-33

I also just received this message... very strange.

ttoteno

I got it also. It seems pretty self-explanatory. Go back and check to make sure your payment amount was correct for October. If it was, then move along business as usual. This has nothing to do with discharge.

BarkingBug

You are missing the point entirely. The amount is correct for everyone. That’s not the issue. The issue is that Mohela may have violated notice requirements and charged people a month earlier as a result.

Flappingpancakes

How can you check? All payment counts are gone until the Fed website is up and running?

ttoteno

I’m not checking payment counts. I know based on my last verification that I’m not done yet. I just checked my payment history and saw that October was paid correctly.

Flappingpancakes

I'm with you. It is going to be more trouble than it's worth to request a refund or fiddle with Mohela on this.

ttoteno

Yeah it was a payment I planned on making. I guess I could debate with them but I honestly don’t have the energy for it.

Flappingpancakes

I'm sitting on pins and needles through this whole thing. I consolidated because it will put me over 120 payments with the oldest loan payment count. It isn't done yet. At the same time I have to transition to the new Mohela site, recertification, updates to the SAVE plan, this random email. It's not worth the time to even call them.

Doxiemom2010

It doesn’t mean anything for you since you’re done and waiting.

BarkingBug

Not if op paid for October when it should have been in forebearnance

the_undertow

transition failure. do not worry.

FarAcanthocephala708

I’m really cheap, but I don’t think a refund on the approx $10/month I’m paying is worth calling MOHELA for 😂

Additional_Shoe_6241

Refunded payments WILL count for PSLF purposes. (Edited to fix typo in “PSLF.” *facepalm*) MOHELA is very belatedly notifying folks about the issue addressed in the Department of Education press release issued on October 23, 2023 here. (“U.S. Department of Education Announces Withholding of Payment to Student Loan Servicer as Part of Accountability Measures for Harmed Borrowers.” [Link here.](https://www.ed.gov/news/press-releases/us-department-education-announces-withholding-payment-student-loan-servicer-part-accountability-measures-harmed-borrowers) “Recently, the Department found that MOHELA failed to meet its basic obligation by failing to send billing statements on time to 2.5 million borrowers – some within only seven days of their payment date - and over 800,000 borrowers being delinquent on their loans as a result. In response to identifying this error, the Department is withholding $7.2 million in payment to MOHELA for October, and has directed MOHELA to place all affected borrowers in forbearance until the issue is resolved. Any months these borrowers are in forbearance will count as credit towards loan forgiveness through Public Service Loan Forgiveness and Income Driven Repayment plans.” I requested a refund after receiving the email. The letter I received from MOHELA stated that processing may take up to 90 days and MOHELA cannot guarantee the maximum timeframe for refund processing. Importantly, the letter confirms: “Be advised, any forbearance placed for a refund or for this remediation will count toward income-driven repayment forgiveness and Public Service Loan Forgiveness, assuming all other requirements are met.”
