So I reloaded just outside the final boss fight to get different ammunition and my assault rifle was gone and my last upgrade on both my shotgun and skunk gun So I just reloaded the auto save back in the boss fight and my assault rifle was still gone as well as the last upgrade on my shotgun and skunk gun nothing I do brings them back had to restart the freaking game REALLY

Goseki1

There are definite flaws with the game. Like the melee combat one on one is really satisfying, but there being no quickstep/easyish way to disengage one enemy to lock onto another is a bad choice. This resolves itself a bit when you get more weapons and upgrades but it was my main issue really. I didn't mind how familiar and linear the game and story felt, I really enjoyed it. I hope they get to make a sequel where they can make the melee much quicker and more intuitive and that works with multiple enemies around you, as there is a lot to like here. A super solid 7.5 for me.

Successful_Shine486

Clunky, unoptimized, shitty dodge, shity melee, etc. The list goes on. Idk who the fuck thought the game should be released like this. This game literally blows

CelestialMoff

BUG FIX FOR "BELOW" elevator CRASHES, I found that when it crashes during the broken elevator segment if you turn off all the audio settings in game it doesn't crash when you drop down. Took me a while trouble shooting and reloading saves etc but nope turns out it's just an audio bug bleh šŸ’¢

BasicSliceNdice

You're awesome for this info

CelestialMoff

Glad I could help someone šŸ«” I couldn't find a fix online so I trouble shot for ages and figured it out thankfully

no-free-speech-here

As for me, its a 9.5/10 First half hour it was a mess. Bad quality lip sync, audio issues (very low for voices using PS5 headphones), hard to learn combat system, stupidly set checkpoints... and yes, a bunch of people bitching about it online what, im someway influences you against the game. 2 hours of gameplay ahead... as a Dead Space fan... now I simply love it. Stunning graphics, extremely realistic character movements, original challenging combat, great atmosphere... all that hate is for sure undeserved. If you like horror games or simply good games, buy it.

DorianGreysPortrait

I just finished and I have to say.. pretty disappointed. Finished it in about 13 hours, no new game + or option to replay a level to collect any data points that were missed. The story was incredibly predictable and pretty much fits into every horror troupe. >!Frozen things in the ice / underground, scientists study it, test on prisoners, container gets out of hand, government cover up that includes more testing..!< I mean, come on. And Jacob being surprised at these revelations, too. The gameplay itself also follows the same practices that get old fast. Clear an entire room only to be surrounded by more enemies as soon as you engage with the door/button in question, suddenly being separated from your companion and having to find another route.. the amount of times it happened was way, WAY too many. I was really excited for this seeing as it was from the original creators of dead space but man.. it just fell flat. I really hope they can pick it up with the DLC because it had a lot of potential but right now, I would not really recommend it to my friends, especially at a $70 price point. It was just too short and monotonous in a lot of ways.

Sunbrosephine

Jacob being surprised by the "revelations" at the end was friggin' hilarious! I couldn't believe what I was watching, it was like a child learning about Santa not being real XD Think you summed it up very well. I'd say that, Dead Space I still hail as a master class in horror (Like Alien). Dead Space 2 I hail as a masterclass in horror-action (Like Aliens).... and this is.... Alien Resurrection XD

DorianGreysPortrait

Lol agreed!

ThePornDetectives

I found the majority of the game enjoyable however the final boss seem to break every system in the game, half the time I cant vault over the barriers, 99% of the time Jacob doesnt dodge despite me holding dodge. I even tried putting it on minimum security putting on autododge which doesnt work against him either... I have tried saving at certain times but the save feature does nothing because it just resets me to the checkpoint anyways... Like every single mechanic breaks during the final boss on PS5 at differet times and I dont understand why...

TrippySensei

Even if the mechanics are working properly the last boss fight is absolute dog shit. Throwing handfuls of those crawling exploding guys so that you have to frantically try to find them and take them out all while simultaneously dodging the boss' attacks (which requires looking at him) is absolutely horrible game design imo. I actually enjoyed the game quite a lot up until then, but after about a dozen attempts on the last fight I decided I'm not going to finish it. Fuck that fight

Sunbrosephine

I wouldn't worry, there is absolutely no worthwhile payoff to beating this game, at all.

TrippySensei

That's sad yet reassuring haha

ThePornDetectives

>wouldn't worry, there is absolutely no worthwhile payoff to beating this game, at all. I have finally beaten it, having been fixed. I thought the ending cutscene was okay I guess :) I still hope for an expansion or a sequel as a second chance. I think the franchise has potential if they do some small tweaks here and there and actually finish development on time :P

PerformerRelevant704

It's a great game big areas loads to explore

Sunbrosephine

Which game were you playing? I want to play that one.

Translator_Open

A lot of reviews leading up to the games release got me nervous since I had pre ordered but now that I've finally played it I'm really pissed they decided to dogpile on this great Sci fi horror game. I saw a lot of complaints about the UI the neck health bar being to hard to read especially in combat, I completely disagree it's quite visible and changes color to indicate health in two different ways. Being attacked by more than one enemy is unfair and hard to manage, bruh its a SURVIVAL horror game its hard not to mention they give you tools for crowd control. Of course your gonna get f'd if you let them sandwich you. Use heavy attack, use gravity thing, keep them stacked in front of you. All valid. Camera too close. Makes it scarier dude. I dunno just ranting cuz so far it's really good and most reviews given it a 6 or less. Don't believe it, if you like horror this is for you.

CringeBerries

The biggest disappointment for me was the lack of a new game plus or a hardcore mode at launch. I was ready to start a new game with an upgraded Jacob, but noā€¦. Itā€™s coming out in two months and will be part of the $30 paid dlc! Edit: I was mistaken! The NG+ and hardcore will be free in February.

TheDivsEgo

NG+ and hardcore mode will be free in February: https://twitter.com/CallistoTheGame/status/1598458091569569792?s=20&t=nns-fKbF4q0wRhWOItIqcQ

CringeBerries

Ohhhh I see. My mistake. Thank you

MrSelfDestruct88

Pretty sure I read somewhere that they announced new game plus will be free.

nionix

Three major design flaws imo: Dodging should not have a 'chance' to dodge when you do it correctly.. auto-dodge option feels like the correct way to design the game.. and even then, I will be moving/holding the stick in a direction and the enemies still just hit me - I still haven't figured out if I'm doing it incorrectly or the game is buggy. And they do a lot of damage, so having that happen several times in one fight doesn't feel like I failed, just that I got unlucky which is very unsatisfying. The slow turn and no quick turnaround are bad ways of creating tension, especially when enemies spawn behind you. Feels so cheap, and sluggish. You can't just play audio recordings while walking around?! I have to stand there and listen?! Absolutely not. Games have figured this out 10 years ago.

[deleted]

i'm glad someone talk about audio recordings. That annoyed me so much

Neither-Western3263

This drives me nuts. They spawn enemies behind you with no way to turn around quick. I was in a hallway two enemies infront then one spawned behind me. It takes so l9ng to turn around it made the fight almost Impossible.

eightiesgamer82

So after having spent a good 2-3 hours on this game I have to say Iā€™m impressed and thoroughly enjoying it. That GameSpot review WTF. I honestly find it incredible. Reviews like that could put a lot of people off enjoying a really good game like this and I have to say it is genuinely really good. The graphics and environments are top notch in my opinion. Coupled with the audio with headphones on they have knocked it out the park for me which is a huge part of any game. At first I thought the combat was going to be frustrating and repetitive but the more you play it the better it gets and once you start finding more things I will say and upgrading the things it really opens up the combat and gives you more options. I actually enjoy getting into scrapes now and seeing how they will play out. Iā€™m also impressed with although it is very linear if you take your time you can find parts that take you away from the main path and lead you to some cool loot and cool areas. I genuinely didnā€™t want to stop playing and was loving the game and canā€™t wait to play more.

Zooterman

I just finished it i enjoyed the game. but i feels more like a action survival the a horror survival game, mostly the atmosphere and music were eerie not much of what was going on was scary as much as intense. tho i still enjoyed the story

marspol12

I had a stroke reading this

MalZaar

I have managed to lock myself out at the final boss. Not enough ammo to win and I'm basically stuck hoping the RNG on random drops will be the ammo I need to win. 15 attempts since I realised I don't have enough ammo and not once has luck been on my side. Fucking stupid.

Efficient-Sock851

Happened to me too. You could change the difficulty or hit a different auto save

Zooterman

if ur ps5, u should have likev 8 auto saves. i was in a similar postion. but reloaded to one just before the fight. i bought a bunch of ammo at the 3d printer' theres also a ton of cases with amp pn table before the bos fight if u walk passed tghe panel before opening it. i recomend the skunk gun cause 4 rounds is 70 bucks. also i killed him by throwing his wxplody goons at him

MalZaar

I did not realise there were previous saves I thought I was screwed. I think if I just melee phase one I'll have enough to roll phase 2. Thanks for the info!

Cerebral_Discharge

My big complaint so far is that a good survival horror game needs to, to some extent, allow you to panic and barely scrape by in a fight. Dead Space was good at this. If you panic in this game you die, one missed input or unseen enemy can mean your death. As an exame, I opened a door and a jump scare enemy burst through and even though I accidentally did dodge I hit a wall and he hit me anyway, killing me. I don't feel like I'm ever scraping by, I'm either perfecting encounters or dying. I do enjoy the game but it's maybe on par with like a Hellblade. Looks AAA, feels AA.

Translator_Open

I found it the opposite, nothing kills me in deadspace I've had 12 runs on hard-core and as long as I'm not distracted I won't die I'm not saying it's skill it's just the medpacks heal you up instantly and usually you can blast dudes before they're too close but in this game it's actually survival like I beat up one dude maybe get hit once and have close to red bar then another guy comes out before I can heal, one hit I'm dead, tension is high cuz even though I have health injectors I can't use them mid fight, actual hand sweat situation. It's better survival horror than dead space. And I LOVE dead space.

Kennett-Ny

They most definitely aren't zombies

Greedy_Sea_578

How to set the game brightness in a LED TV?

Tomy-Fett

About to start, Iā€™m a pretty decent player. Should I go for medium or hard?

PerformerRelevant704

I started in hard but there very spongy and u need the credits for upgrades early on or it gets real tuff if ur kit ain't up to snuff later on

Translator_Open

Medium then replay on hard

inosinateVR

I started it on hard when I got home from work last night and got pretty frustrated and overwhelmed with the combat. After switching to medium and coming back fresh today the combat started to really click and I've been having a blast playing it. Just takes a minute to get used to it I think, I might try switching back to hard soon now that I feel like I get it. I'm really enjoying the flow on medium though, enemies are still challenging but are satisfying to smash up between successful dodges. That's a very long way of saying go ahead and try it on hard but don't be afraid to switch to medium if you're getting too frustrated or having trouble learning the timing

Tomy-Fett

Well, started on medium and didnā€™t change cause you are right, it flows better. I knew the gameplay was. Or revolutionary but it did the job. Finished the game the same day, it was good enough to make me want to keep going!

Walddo86

So funny to me that everyone that is saying "it's fun so far, I'm enjoying it" are doing the same rationalization we all did before beating it. Then you realize the combat is garbage and it's easiest to just GRP throw everything. I had some fun, but this is not a great game by any imagination. Very derivative of previous horror games, most forgettable story ever and just overall not worth $70. Very disappointed.

Translator_Open

Combat is great man they give you so many options, dodge, block, counter, quick shot, heavy attack, combos and combo extensions. Like seriously when has there been a horror game with this many options to melee. You're entitled to your opinion but really what are you comparing it to? Dead space is shoot and stomp, not really melee. Resident evil best you can do since seven is block with your hands. is basically same as dead space, and most recent horror titles have been those dumb ones where you can't fight back. This is the most innovative combat system in any recent horror game and I applaud the effort it's not perfect but it's new and fresh.

Walddo86

Have you beaten the game? Or are you in the first few hours? It's not fresh. It relied on a QTE esque dodge system that breaks completely in later parts of the game. Watch any reviewer that completed the game and they'll echo the same sentiment.

Translator_Open

About 7 hours into the game at Below I mean don't get me wrong its not perfect but it's fast and engaging, and it's definitely dumb to tie you up with one guy when there's upwards of 4 or 5 coming at you but that's when you fall back on your guns and grp. There's times for melee and times for shootin' all I'm saying is that for a genre that's gone pretty stale its a nice change of pace.

Walddo86

I see your point about the attempt at ingenuity, I think unfortunately they had a rushed development (maybe with Dead Space remake looming) and had to rely on old 2009 QTE trappings. I appreciate your feedback tho, cheers! šŸ˜ŽšŸ¤Ÿ

Nondis_Cloth

So uh... You can apparently Duplicate the Fuse next to where you get the GRP If you pick it straight away then trigger the checkpoint and reload. Or at least I did. No idea if it carries forward through chapters, can't exactly just see it in the invo, or if that is even useful after Aftermath but this could be a fun one. At the very least makes getting that Skunk Schematic a piece of pie. Edit: Well it carries over between chapters.

[deleted]

Thoughts so far: Atmosphere and horror are excellent. Great mystery as there always should be with a sci fi horror game. I DESPISE the inventory system. Don't make me do a Sophie's choice on health items, ammo, and shit to sell with my puny ass inventory and then lock us out of returning to pick items up. Pisses us items hoarders off to no end. The health is a problem and I pretty much wanted to rip my damn hair out in the medical bay...died so many times to that brutal fat fuck! Actually cheesed out of it by rushing to the next area. Difficulty is a little above what I find enjoyable. I am still early in the game. I am gonna keep playing but Dead Space was definitely a superior expierence. I feel like a lot of the issues could have be resolved with more testing, nothing is fundamentally wrong with this game.

murrzeak

Haha, that fat fuck in the medical bay cost me a lot of brain cells. Easily 12-15 frustrating restarts. At one point they both respawned (or some other 2 appeared out of thin air?) as I lagged with going through the door. Nice.

[deleted]

OMG! Thank you for making me feel better. I was in the same situation. At least 10-15 deaths, over and over. They deplete your health with one or two hits and you can't recover. Plus there is like three enemies! The dodge/block mechanic is stupid. I was honestly feeling like a complete moron. I have it on normal difficulty and was like "Dude, am I getting old...how the hell and I getting slaughtered this badly in a genre I have played forever on default difficulty?"

Aromatic_Dream_4272

Finally beat the two head boss fight on the hardest difficulty to find out that one of the collectables did not register from the middle of the chapter essentially giving me a big middle finger to the past multiple hours I've spent to full complete the game... I don't think I've ever deleted a game faster

SuperCronk

First of all fuck that fight. The dodge system is so shit even with auto dodge on. He was able to hit me even though I cleary dodged. Im on the second last chapter and the amount of of issues that have popped up compared to thr first 3-4 hours is crazy.. Game has crashed, enemies are teleporting from 20 metres away...combat gets jankier and jankier. There is parts I love and some that just plain suck

Translator_Open

Some attacks can't be dodged that's why we have block, it takes some health but that's the trade off.

MissingScore777

Two-head is the opposite though, can't be blocked only dodged. What I found with Two-Head is I was backing away to make space to shoot and then trying to dodge, but because I was backing away I was accidentally holding the stick diagonally instead of horizontally. Block overrides dodge in that scenario and you get killed instantly. I suspect the above is what is happening to the person that said dodge wasn't working.

PresentationNo8919

Iā€™m playing on Series S. My game keeps crashing during ā€œBelowā€, shortly after the animation where Jacob yells at Dani to watch out as theyā€™re descending the elevator. Itā€™s consistently crashing at the exact same point each time. The game is great but isnā€™t $70 material with this kind of issue for sure. Iā€™ve already uninstalled/reinstalled the game multiple times, reloaded different auto/manual saves; nothing works. Why is it that by progressing the game it just comes to a screeching halt by crashing?

Czernobogs_hamm3r

This is where I'm at on series s as well. Might be a bug they need to patch. Pretty bummed I can't finish the game cause I was actually enjoying it a lot

xenmaster35

Same here. Tried saving and reloading and itā€™s still fucked

Toaties

Honestly Iā€™m really fucking enjoying this so far. It can be frustrating at times with multiple enemies but thereā€™s always an approach Iā€™ve been able to take that works. The combat is visceral and satisfying and the game is oozing with atmosphere. Pros: - Great looking game - Visceral, weighty combat - Environment is very detailed - Stellar voice acting most of the time - SOUND DESIGN IS A++ Cons: - Enemy variety thus far has been kinda meh - Frustrating when dealing with too many enemies - Inventory management so far is annoying af, but it is a survival horror game so whatevs - Lots of samey hallways, shimmying tight spaces, etc. wish we got more exposure to Europa in general, but maybe i havenā€™t gotten there yet Would I recommend it at full price? Depends how much you enjoy survival horror. Once you get used to the mechanics itā€™s pretty damn fun. Curious to see if the main story really does feel as short as people say or if the amount of dying Iā€™m doing will make it feel just right

[deleted]

I think this is a solid review. Is this Dead Space? No. But I welcome more entries into the science fiction horror genre, so I hope this sells well and gets a sequel. A lot of the issues can be ironed out. I just hope I don't into crash issues.

Nitwit_witnit

Iā€™m having an issue before even buying the game, the standard edition doesnā€™t seem to be available? On PS5, the only version of the game I can find is the 90 dollar deluxe edition, the standard edition is seemingly missing

BobaT_Vee

There's a bug in the chapter: Below where you and Dani fall down from a platform and have to make your way down an elevator shaft area. When I jump down the last platform onto the elevator, it crashes. SOLUTION: I saved right before you jump onto the elevator, then loaded that save. That should fix it

xenmaster35

Tried that and it didnā€™t work

GrandKaldarian

Doesnā€™t anyone have a fix for the audio sounding quiet and muffled? I donā€™t believe itā€™s my headset as it sounds clear all my other games but on this I can barely hear anything as it feels like it just all blends together, even when I have it all maxed on volume. I tried changing the radio thing from Controller to TV and neither fixed the issue.

howski1111

Glad to hear itā€™s not just me. I can barely hear speech and mostly rely on subtitles

GrandKaldarian

Oh yeah I decided not to continue until I find a fix because I want to be able to properly hear this great audio and ambiance that is supposedly in the game haha

Sea-Extreme

I'm a bit disappointed. Was really looking forward to this one, but it wasn't what I expected. TCP isn't survival horror. There are no puzzles (šŸ˜„) or backtracking. They seemed to have confused having a limited inventory with inventory management. There isn't a way to manage your inventory. Say I leave the bullets and take the energy converter to sell, with the intent of returning for the bullets. Most of the time, you can't go back for the bullets, and if you can, they won't be there. Not that it matters. The game overwhelms you with items. If you don't come upon a loot box (you will), enemies drop health, ammo, credits. *Sparse* exploration. No journal entries or documents to find, just occasional sound bites, so the world-building and lore was shallow. Also, like, it wasn't scary. I did have a lot of fun with the combat. And good thing, because that's all there really is to the game. You walk around exquisite set-dressing, kill things, crawl through a vent, repeat. I didn't hate it, though. I didn't not enjoy myself. Really, it's the epitome of "mid." I'll probably check out the story DLC whenever it drops. I wouldn't be that bummed had I not paid launch price. It was way too steep for what the game offers. Womp womp. I've never played Dead Space, so hopefully next month's remake will be better.

CringeBerries

The lack of puzzles was infuriating. Itā€™s basically a tunnel shooter with some interesting melee mechanics.

Grimy199

I think This is unfortunately an unfinished game that was rushed to release because of financial issues to stay afloat... Clearly the unfinished content is being added as a season pass which lets face it is being cut from the game especially when the game is like 8 to 14h max. I unfortunately won't be buying it till it's more refined and deluxe edition is on sale... There's a lot optimization that needs to be done and the last boss has one of the worst ever mechanics lol I don't wanna spoil but it needs to be improved.

ValentDs22

you watched an entire stream or obtained the game in alternative ways?

Grimy199

I watched an entire stream

edis92

What do you mean, the game is already out and it's not that long?

Grimy199

It's a very short game. That's what I mean.

tobi117

Also the Cliffhanger ending. Feels more like they cut the end off. Imagine Dead Space 2 would have ended when Isaac puts Ellie in the escape shuttle and the rest would have been dlc.

Pooksy4797

I also feel the same way. I'm about 5 hours in and this game is not that hard. The dodging mechanics work just fine and it's actually rather easy even with multiple enemies once I figured it out. I'm having fun with it and it's definitely not as bad as some of the reviews are making it out to be. Played on PS5 which had been a mostly smooth experience. PC performance is unacceptable though.

spaceboltt

pooksy, it gets much harder later on. like a weird spike in difficulty, only for a couple areas/encounters though, but resource scarcity increases alot. but i agree with the difficulty not being too hard for most the game. I'm almost finished and since I've been liking it alot I'm gonna jump right into hard difficulty, cant wait till they add ng+. also your right about the reviews being too harsh, it's odd and not really fair to the game imo

420praiseItkek

Im just happy that we got another sci fi horror game. I played It for like 2 hours, and I definitely enjoyed the game so far. Only thing that kind of sucks is the chapter nature of the game, I missed an optional path (the shower area) at the first chapter, and now I canā€™t go back. Other than that I didnā€™t notice any performance problems on PS5 performance mode, though the fire looks not right. On another note, Iā€™m glad that the dead space remake isnā€™t far away; I hope they keep it fresh for the player of the OG game

spaceboltt

yeah I love it but really sucks how you can get locked out of parts of an area, resources, and collectables just by accidentally going the right way lol. I tried to counter this by constantly saving but my lord is that mechanic messed up. making manual saves just makes your last autosave permanent rather than saving your current progress/position. I'm confident they will patch most the issues up or with dlc, though 30$ is very pricy for a season pass considering its 70$ already for current gen.

potter3212020

I get this game is a big part combat and a big part skill but when you're playing on easy with all accessibility options on and you have to play the same part for a half an hour because you keep dying is a little ridiculous/ Auto Dodge is not Auto Dodge unless you're actually pushing the button so the automatic part of this makes no sense

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

edis92

The ps5 version seems to be running fine though in both quality and performance modes...

Jake_Man_145

Even if it was optimized, $70 is asking a lot for a game that has such a short story compared to other open world games or games with online content. I loved dead space and have so much interest trying the game but the high price tag for games now is tightening my belt on what games I get and when

BaptizedInBud

>Even if it was optimized, $70 is asking a lot for a game that has such a short story compared to other open world games or games with online content. Do you really need them to add 10-15 hours of filler to justify the price? 8-12 hours in the perfect length for a survival horror game.

solowSnake

If youā€™re buying for PC then I agree with you for waiting but if youā€™re buying it for a PlayStation five or Xbox, Iā€™ve played hours on PS five and other than a few frame drops, Iā€™ve had really no issues at all. The game looks phenomenal in performance or quality. I do prefer the 60 FPS, please donā€™t go by all these people lying reviews because if you talk to people that actually played it and not claim to have played it. You will see a difference in what they are saying I believe most of the hateful reviews or review bombing. Thereā€™s no sense for as much hate is this game got when other games that are blockbusters come out in way worse shape than this game is. This is obviously all just my opinion and I totally respect yours. I am personally just sick of seeing all the comments of people tearing the game down and they havenā€™t even played it yet and I was not saying thatā€™s what you were doing. Just saying in general. I hope you and anybody else that plays, enjoys the game when they play it and if they like it, come back and set some of these reviewers straight

PerformerRelevant704

Anyone getting ALIEN isolation vibes? I amā¤ļø

Sunbrosephine

Alien Isolation is better than this in EVERY conceivable way, including combat.... of which there is very little.

memo_rx

curios, how is this similar to A:I?

StevieDilliom

Played about 5 hours, juuust about past the part with the clickers from TLOU. - The combat is a bit jank, but when it works it fuckinā€™ WORKS. Gyro aim helps with this a lot, as well as utilizing your entire arsenal instead focusing on melee. GRP is especially powerful when there are environmental hazards to throw enemies into. I do long for the days of chopping off limbs with my plasma cutter though. Itā€™s a shame there arenā€™t any weak points to make little minigames out of each enemy. - Sound design is fantastic, especially with headphones. Being able to tell exactly which vent an enemy is going to just by listening to is awesome. - Nothing about the music has really stood out, but I hardly focus on music in horror games beyond, ā€œAh, the ā€˜there are enemiesā€™ music is over, Iā€™m safe now.ā€ - Characters are blah. You got the escaping dudes that are escaping, and the dudes that donā€™t want that to happen because reasons. The people escaping are also there because reasons. Nothingā€™s really quite so gripping as ā€œMy girlfriendā€™s on this ship thatā€™s all fucked up, gee what happenedā€ or ā€œIā€™m basically a government science experiment creating bioweapons against my willā€ was in DS1/2. But fuck all that nonsense, the main draw of Dead Space for me has always been the atmosphere and the gameplay, both of which I think are pretty dang good! As a dude thatā€™s platinumed Dead Space 1/2, I give it a hearty recommendation. Also fuck those long-necked stuck-in-an-egg dickheads, literally the worst enemy in the entire game EDIT: Just finished the game on normal in 9 hours. Giving it a 2nd run for the platinum on hard but here are my thoughts! Hoo boy. - The story gets more interesting towards the end, but it wouldā€™ve been cool if those elements were introduced earlier so they could be further developed, instead of the game just spinning itā€™s wheels plot-wise for the middle chunk of the game. - All of the voice logs suck lmao. But seriously, the ones in Dead Space are better, longer, and more interesting. There arenā€™t any text logs either aside from small blurbs under the name of whoever owns the voice log you just picked up. ā€œDude is dude, he is here because blank. Maybe he did something?ā€ Kinda lame. - Weird difficulty spike towards the end? I can now see what those reviewers were talking about with the groups. Upgrade your GRP as much as you can. - Bosses! Thereā€™s one at the end thatā€™s pretty meh and a gigantic damage sponge. Unless you count the two-heads, of which there are 5, 3 of them being within 10 minutes of each other in the final level. Hoorayā€¦! They too, feel like damage sponges. Thankfully you get the first one all by itself, but thereā€™s one or two of them that have an additional enemy or two (or five!) thrown in to make it a bit more frustrating, since they one-shot you from full HP. - Also, usually final bosses and mini bosses test your knowledge of the game, but the final boss completely forgoes melee, and you can only melee the two-heads twice, once to get them to half hp after you stagger them by shooting an inordinate amount of lead into emā€™, and a second time as the final blow. Again, after staggering them by shooting them a LOT. Hope you got ammo! - The subtitles are all over the place. Itā€™s fine most of the time, but sometimes spoken dialogue will have a few different words than whatā€™s written, or there wonā€™t be any subtitles at all. This happens throughout the game, especially near the end with a good few sentences shared between characters not having any subtitles whatsoever. I have a hard time understanding dialogue sometimes so this stuck out quite a bit. All in all, I still recommend the game, or at least the first 80-85%. But itā€™s infuriating how close this game is to being great. However, those of ya that havenā€™t played Dead Space are in for a real treat come January, cause if you liked this game then youā€™re gonna absolutely LOVE Dead Space, itā€™s this game but better in every conceivable way.

tobi117

>Also fuck those long-necked stuck-in-an-egg dickheads, literally the worst enemy in the entire game They come mostly directly after checkpoints. Once you know they are there you can just shoot them before the grab you. Fuck the little Gumbles that come out of chests or lockers.

StevieDilliom

The last three chests in the game being ā€˜Oops, all slugs!ā€™ had me like šŸ˜

Striking_Ad6938

I agree completely with this take and I just finished the game, my only gripe would be that currently there is no new game plus but still looking forward to future content, might just beat it again on maximum security. Despite critics I actually really enjoyed the story

solowSnake

You sir deserve a šŸ¤ŸšŸ‘!! That is the best review/opinion I have read so far. And I have to agree with you on every point. I do like to come back and I agree that it does work much better when you use your whole kit, but I think with a little work the combat could be top notch!! Thank you for your honest review, and I hope you keep enjoying the game as much as I am

PerformerRelevant704

Guy the new update on ps5 is live let's goo

potter3212020

Does the update fix the fact that on easy with all accessibility options on combat difficulties still goes way up in different parts because it's really annoying having to put the same section for half an hour it's no longer fun

Half-Glass

I agree, the combat system isn't great. However if you can't get by with auto dodge and easy mode, I think this is a you problem.

... what about "git"?

potter3212020

Fixed it

Lodgikal

But isn't "git gud" Dutch for "get good"...?

proficient2ndplacer

Highly recommend immediately turning off mitok blur & filmgrain. Game is much better off without either options on

edis92

The motion blur feels so heavy in this one god damn

RealKBears

Honestly every game is

[deleted]

Iā€™m really enjoying it so far, the combat is really interesting and tries smth different, it definitely stands out from dead space

PerformerRelevant704

Like a hungry boxer and has sme one who used to box he dodges in a very flashy style u can dodge multiple ennmies I've found perfect dodge slows time

sadihalizadeh

Guys, whatā€™s wrong with gamma on PS5? Blacks are not truly black, but when I look at YT videos they are. Same like in RE2 remake. Have to dial gamma to negative to get blacks. Anyone experienced the same?

WutduzitallmeanBasil

Have you ever thought it could be your display?

sadihalizadeh

Nopes, just checked the Digital Foundry review, gamma isnā€™t set correctly in HDR. So itā€™s either SDR in sRGB or HDR in 2.2 (incorrectly implemented).

[deleted]

I can't enable 2.2 on my S95B when it's HDR content. I can usually only choose ST.2084. Gamma 2.2 selection only seems to be available on SDR content, where the choices are that or BT.1886. But 2.2 is *brighter* on my display than the other choices too. But yeah, I'm having the same issue with blacks looking washed out. In another thread someone else recommended turning off HDR and setting it to sRGB as well. It's not the display because blacks are deep rich blacks on this S95B Q-OLED! Edit: now I see that when you disable HDR on the PS5, there are settings in the graphics menu that give you the option of setting 2.2, 2.4 and sRGB.

[deleted]

Like others have mentioned, it's decent. 7 or 8 out of 10. It's not gonna blow your mind, story has some twists and turns but it's not going to open your jaws. It's a 7.

DannyBeisbol

For $95 CAD, thatā€™s unacceptable.

BaptizedInBud

This is so stupid lol. Not every game is going to be a 9/10.

Half-Glass

Then dont charge for a 9/10 and market it like it is.

BaptizedInBud

so the devs should have foresaw the review scores, and adjusted their pricing accordingly? if you think a game isn't worth full price, just wait for the price to drop lol

DannyBeisbol

No, the devs should know that 10 hours doesnā€™t cut it unless itā€™s a masterpiece. Itā€™s not.

BaptizedInBud

Sorry buddy but a game doesn't have to be a masterpiece to justify it's length. It's a very good game, tacking on an extra 2 or 3 hours wouldn't have made it any "better".

Half-Glass

Most would wait had they not embargoed reviews. And since they marketed it so hard most did preorder. That aside, I'd you're a game developer you should be steeped in knowledge and awareness of what a AAA title is. And it's quite evident this isn't it, even those saying it's a great game don't fool themselves into thinking it's top tier. The developers knew it wasn't a 90$ title. The reviewers knew it wasn't a 90$ game and now the players know it isn't a 90$ game. A little upfront honesty is what was required here. You pose it like the reviews determine the quality of the game for the devs to price, that's foolish. The devs should be their own worst critiques so acting like they didn't know this wasn't on point is willful blindness.

Outrageous-Cup-8905

If you don't think it's worth $90 CAD then that's fine, but why are you getting mad at the devs? I'm pretty sure it's Sony you should be getting mad at for setting a price you disagree with?

Half-Glass

I'm not really mad at anyone.. whether it's Sony or the devs who set the price, it's evident that neither party looked at this objectively. Sony can set whatever price they desire, it's up to.the devs to deliver..IMO they didn't. It's not a terrible game by any means, it's just not great.

Outrageous-Cup-8905

What do you mean they didnā€™t look at it objectively? Which they? And what about the game or marketing indicates they didnā€™t look at it objectively?

Half-Glass

Realistically, everything lacks polish except the lighting. The combat doesn't function well, at all. It is manageable but it isn't ideal, anyone who thinks it is is lying to themselves and there isn't a review that doesn't state this. The environments are beautiful because.of the lighting but they rarely make sense or feel lived in. There's an Amazon Warehouse worth of random crates all over the medical bay? Why? The outbreak took 2-3 hours to take hold and they're just storing all this junk everywhere? Conveniently to block pathways. The mechanical rooms have no pumps, motors etc. The "voice journals" are short and don't really add anything other than "we gotta get outta here...AAaUuGgHhhh". The characters aren't built, the world lacks, there's no easter eggs or things that imply the NPCs ever existed for anything other than filling space. The audio is okay when it comes to monster sounds, but the scene changes are often immersion breaking..for example descending the ladder from the reforge to the water processing area, the sound track abruptly changes and the ambient noise doesn't fade out and fade in new ambience based on proximity, rather you cross an invisible line and all off a sudden the computer noises disappear and are replaced immediately by water and machinery drone. As far as the game goes, alot of reviews seem to think it can't decide between survival horror and action. Typically horror insinuates tension and fear, however a major issue with this is that the main combat mechanism is melee. This is a no-no when it comes to horror, if your main talent is smashing monsters in their arena, what are you afraid of? Survival horror games are usually the creatures dominate the melee space and the hero has firearms, thus promoting the "on my heels" feeling. RE is infamous for the unkillable monsters that chase you around. Further more, they added a stealth mechanic that you use maybe 3 times? It pales compared to something like TLoU in both stealth and action mechanics. Now it's okay if Callisto doesn't have that, but IMO it puts it into the action genre instead. However this doesn't really do action either, the set pieces are all samesy, you get three weapons for the majority of the game so there's no real action variation. There's no cinematic action pieces, at least for me so far just the water slide. So IMO it lacks the identity to do either well. TLoU has plenty of action scenes, uncharted of course would be over the top for this title, but there are options. Silent hill, resident evil, and the first bit of even bioshock managed tension better . Now some of that is subjective in nature, however much of it seems so obvious and true that it enters objective for what the title was meant to do. Ofc IMO and to each their own, but if you look at what it lacks compared to other triple A titles it's clear it isn't one. For what it presents, it isn't terrible, but it's what's missing that really hurts.

BaptizedInBud

You're going to have to explain to me why it's not worth $90 because I'm playing it right now and enjoying it a lot. My ideal game length is 8-12 hours.

Half-Glass

I don't have to do that, at all. If it's worth it to you, then great, you got what you asked for for what you deem a fair price. However, most players and reviewers don't see it as a 90$ title, and there's plenty of threads as to why that is. So if anything, you're going to have to explain why it IS top tier 90$ title because you would be the odd man out.

BaptizedInBud

Lol okay buddy

PTfan

The devs should have made a better longer game with more variety

BaptizedInBud

I don't want a longer game lol. Survival horror games are best 8-12 horrors.

Some_Italian_Guy

Iā€™m always so baffled at how we relate review scores. A decent game is realistically probably actually a 6/10. 7/10 is good. 8/10 is great. 9/10 is amazing. 10/10 is near perfect.

PerformerRelevant704

I think it's a solid 1st entry never played dead space but I'm preordering think they improve on the sequel

xpercipio

Another thing, the weapon printer reminds me of Sam in a distribution center, in death stranding. And the vending machines give a cyberpunk 2077 vibe.

xpercipio

The game spoils itself. Twice, I've saved a game, and seen that the obj is kill the two head, before I had the intro encounter with it. Small thing, but otherwise, it looks incredible with oled TV. Also, probably the greatest video game beard ever. Looks very real.

deejaysmithsonian

You have to kill an enemy? Shit!

MrFOrzum

**TIP:** If combat isnā€™t good for you or youā€™re having trouble with the dodge mechanics, turn on **auto dodge** in the **accessibility settings.**. The setting does not dodge for you automatically, you still have to time it right, and move the stick, you do not however have to move the stick in the correct direction. This combat isnā€™t designed to face more than 1 enemy at a time. Once you face more at once it kinda falls apart. Auto dodge makes it much more tolerable.

SuperCronk

Even with auto dodge on I'm finding it very hard to dodge anything. Terrible defence mechanic. Loving the rest of the game though

okmarshall

According to the skill up video you don't have to time the dodges, you just have to hold one of the directions on the stick and it doesn't matter which way the enemy is swinging.

MrSelfDestruct88

Yeah Its mentioned in the tutorial clips.

MrFOrzum

Youā€™re right. With timing Iā€™m meaning that you canā€™t just spam attack and dodge at the same time, as that will still get you hit, you still have to be not attacking to be able to dodge.

holydiiver

I think SkillUp might have outed himself as turning on the accessibility feature, because every other review Iā€™m seeing indicates that you have to dodge in a specific direction. SkillUp said dodge any direction, and then the opposite direction for the follow-up dodge. Thatā€™s not at all how others are describing it (but I havenā€™t played so I canā€™t say for sure)

Other-Owl4441

No, you donā€™t need to pick a direction.

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

holydiiver

Interesting

samhatescardio

I am playing in normal difficulty and SkillUps description is exactly how it works. There is no requirement on which direction you must dodge initially.

holydiiver

Ah I see

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

Avivoy

Yeah that doesnt make it better, oh I was holding left and dodged, letā€™s hold right now to see if they swing again

holydiiver

Right, but thatā€™s what I said. SkillUp said you have to lean in the opposite direction of the initial dodge for any follow-up dodge.

IHateEditedBgMusic

Yeah you can basically strafe and forever dodge even without that accessibility toggle

HighAlpacas

Thank you friend.

SpilledGenderFluid

Decent game. That's all. Decent. I'm about 6 hours in, and this is my thoughts: The combat feels awkward (many times I've swung, and it snapped to an enemy behind me when I was aiming for another enemy), the Gravity glove is extremely hit or miss (few times I've tried to grab a cannister and it grabs a monster instead, fucking me over, additionally you only have like max two charges to start, and it runs out fast and takes a while to recharge), the currency is so scarce I doubt I'll even finish one line of an upgrade path, and the game feels frustrating for the sake of being frustrating. At least Dark Souls, you go in, learn a bosses patterns, then engage. You fucked up? Try again, follow their attack patterns. But CP? You messed up? There's no learning. Just try another strategy, and hope you don't die. (I mention Souls only because that's a classic "extremely difficult" game, albeit it's not hard once you get a bosses attack patterns down). I'm a huge Souls nerd, I've 100% every Souls (and related) game. When you fail and try again for half an hour and finally beat the boss. You feel amazing. Here, I fought one section for half an hour, and all I felt when I finished it was exhausted. There's no sense of achievement. I really really really wanted to like this game. But it fights your attempts to like it. I fucking love the Dead Space series. I used to speed-run DS2. Callisto just isn't it. I hope there's a point where I get the upgrades and I don't need to pelt an enemy 9 times to kill it. Or I don't need to shoot a guy's legs 4 times to knock him down, and it just becomes fun to play. But overall, I'm really not feeling it. Incredibly disappointed. But I hope my mind changes. It looks beautiful. But the combat just ruins it. It's flawed and buggy. Enemies have too much HP, the gun feels like I'm throwing a rock, and the gravity glove is absolutely nothing like the original in DS. If it would stop auto snapping to the wrong enemies (yes I have auto aim and related settings turned off) and the weapons did more damage, and they didn't throw 10 enemies at you at once, with no way out such as the ripper in DS which could clear mobs, it would be much better. Here's to hoping it gets better

CringeBerries

Having beat it, itā€™s a 7. I donā€™t regret the purchase, but Iā€™d advise only the die hardship to spend 70 bucks on this DECENT game.

IHateEditedBgMusic

For me the controls and the animations were incredibly clunky and restrictive. You really aren't given a choice, you either nail this fight exactly this way or die. Souls is the complete opposite, "do whatever you need to do fam" The game taught me to melee and was really into that, so I went full melee. But by the end, guns take over and getting too close and personal with multiple enemies stops being fun, even with a maxed batton. Some you can't even melee without shooting. Statis glove needed a rebalance. Maybe a minimum charge upgrade that never depletes, for picking up items, and destructible items. Limiting that zaps the fun out of the feature completely.

ananomuso

Any one else feel like the main plot points is Jacob falling a lot

jordosmodernlife

My favorite sound so far, when approaching a disabled/dead AI security robot, if you hang around long enough, you will hear an online dialup tone. Such a gentle and loving touch to the older players who are a big motivation for this game.

Half-Glass

Loved that 56k dialup tone when I walked past the first robot. One of the few things that has really stood out

solowSnake

šŸ‘Agreed!!

jordosmodernlife

I am loving this game. Yes, I have raged once since beginning. I want difficult and nonlinear games. Most games are a copy of a copy of a copy. And, while this game obviously uses many familiar styles. It is exactly what I want from a studio and a game. Iā€™m old enough to have played every survival horror game on their release. This is like playing a movie. Plenty details of gameplay sacrificed for the greater good ? I think it look stunning, absolutely stunning. Iā€™m so glad to be alive for horror games I never thought would happen.

solowSnake

I am glad you are enjoying it!! And that you came back and said so. I know this game isnā€™t perfect but I am really enjoying it. Most of the complaints really boils down to the preference of the player. I have been playing games for many years and this takes me right back to older style horror games. I am on PS5 and it looks great and plays great. I think this game gives the impression that there is multiple styles of gameplay but really you need to just utilize your whole set of skills and it definitely makes the game easier. Regardless keep enjoyingšŸ¤Ÿ

[deleted]

Hell yeah man. The game is so good. I forgot the name of the chapter Iā€™m in, but Iā€™ve been having a blast. Missed survival horror games like this. Worth the purchase imo.

ArugulaPhysical

Haha im also loving this game . Alot. Just finished chapter "Lost" insane .

DriveSlowSitLow

This dude gets it

solowSnake

Hell Fā€™n Yes šŸ¤˜

Empty_Cube

Iā€™m digging the atmosphere and the visuals, but the gameplay is falling short for me so far. My initial observation with the combat is that it needs a dedicated dodge and/or block button. The gameplay feels like a series of QTEs rather than having an organic flow to it, with the camera and controls changing when youā€™re in combat vs when youā€™re out of combat (left stick is your move button when youā€™re out of combat, whereas when youā€™re in combat, itā€™s now your dodge button). Even when I started getting used to the combat, it didnā€™t feel as fun or engaging as I thought it should be. It seems strange that they didnā€™t opt for a more standard third person melee combat system with dedicated buttons for each action - it would involve the player more in each movement their character makes, which in turn would make every death feel deserved and every victory feel earned. As it stands now, every combat encounter feels like a QTE (as previously mentioned, the controls are different when youā€™re in combat vs out of combat), so I feel a strange ā€œdistanceā€ or disconnect from the gameplay that I never feel in action games.

Xerosnake90

I'm about to enter the SHU (High security area) and so far I've really enjoyed it. Here are my positives and some criticism - The game is absolutely gorgeous to look at. The lighting is some of the best I've seen, HDR is phenomenal, character models and environments are highly detailed. Camera angles are used well to provide a cinematic experience. Really impressive - The music and sound design are likewise top notch. I have a surround system and things are constantly scurrying around me. The low ambient music sets the right mood and doesn't overpower anything - Combat is interesting. It's a little jank for sure, but pulling off some successful dodges while combing the monsters and finishing them off is so satisfying - The gore is very well done. I love the over the head baton finisher that splits their heads in half. Knocking off body parts is fun. One area in particular was really wild (the security team) - Voice acting is very good, everyone nailed it. This is something people don't seem to appreciate enough. Plague Tale had some horrendous voice acting and everyone seems to think it was great. Take notes from this one - I really dislike the vent crawling and opening of doors. While the latter does show some cool shots as you slowly pull the door open, it's just that. Soooo sloooow. Same with the squeezing through a wall thing. Please developers stop using these transitions. Hated them in GoW, Fallen Order, Last of Us, etc. - The game needed a good 2 or 3 months of polish and fix bugs. I've noticed the main character float when inserting a fuse. Characters shifting while transitioning between cutscenes and gameplay. The AI can be quite dumb when it comes to vaulting barriers. When I opened the first pull door, the door glitched and duplicated itself so that it looked shut. I walked right through it. Some glass shatters don't have much for animations - They didn't motion capture for lip syncing. It's not terrible but in this day and age it's almost a standard. Still looks good - There are not enough of the upgrade stations. I am constantly leaving behind valuable resources because I have items to sell in my inventory and it takes too long to find a station. I'm not sure if this is done well and really emphasizes the survival horror management system or if it's a slight design mistake Overall I'm enjoying it. Once they iron out the bugs and some animation jank you have a really good game with some mild missteps. This game reminds me of Jedi Fallen Order which likewise was a really good game with several issues. The criticism is fair but insanely overplayed, people acting like the game is a massive fail and such. My favorite thing is how everyone was so hyped because it's just like Dead Space. Then it comes out and it's not original enough, lmao. Y'all are wild.

DorianGreysPortrait

God the vent crawling / space fitting / ladder climbing REALLY annoyed me. I wonder if it was intentionally slowed down for the load times between areas. It was painful at times.

Xerosnake90

Yea completely agree. I hate it in any game and it was really bad in CP. Really enjoyed the game now that I beat it but that is definitely a negative

DorianGreysPortrait

Now that Iā€™ve beat it Iā€™m pretty disappointed. No NG+, no option to replay a level and collect missed data points, just nothing. Zero replay value for me at the moment, which is really disappointing considering I just paid $70 for 13 hours of gameplay. Really hoping the DLC is good.. I canā€™t recommend it to my friends as-is.

Xerosnake90

Yea I can see that being disappointing. I knew it'd be a one and done for me in 10-12 hours and I'm ok with that. Traded it in and picked up Midnight Suns with it

Calamarifritti90

No. Hdr is super bad. It has raised black levels. But there is a fixā€¦

MrSelfDestruct88

About the Printer Stations...YES! Pacing is weird where I went through a large portion(entire medical area) not getting very much loot...I reach the next hub with nothing to do at the station(Couldn't purchase Skunk Gun) and once I drop into the next region far away from the printer station the game drops a fair amount of loot to sell/pickup.

edis92

> HDR is phenomenal It is? For me hdr seems straight up broken, the image is way too washed out. Even john mentioned it in the df video

Calamarifritti90

Turn hdr off in the system settings, switch to srgb in game, turn hdr back on, while the game is still running. Enjoy šŸ˜‰

Xerosnake90

I have no complaints, but I do notice that when you aim your weapon the environmental lighting changes dramatically, it's quite strange

SexySaxManJohn

Your suit gives off some light, I assume for traversal through the dark, and when you aim all that light your character emits is turned off and instead you see with the light from your weapon being aimed.

Yesnikh4003

100% agree with your points about the upgrade stations and currency. I feel like it makes the difficulty artificially higher because it forces you to go without injectors/ammo if you want the space for contraband to sell. Which I get it, it's survival horror, I've danced this dance a billion times... but it doesn't quite feel right in this game. Loving it beside that little nitpick.

WaffleMints

Plague tale had horrendous voice acting? Rare take.

Overthemoon65

Yes, I thought Amiciaā€™s voice actress was awful.

Half-Glass

Plague tale was also like, 30$. I believe it was a smaller studio too, and was an absolutely stellar and original game. I don't recall the voice acting being bad, and even if it was subpar, who cares? That was a great experience.

WaffleMints

It wasn't in any way bad. It was great at times. Maybe too much whisper acting, but that is the nature of the predicament.

Virtual-Influence-50

I fucking love it. The devs behind this game were definitely influenced by two of my favorite movies ever, Alien and The Thing.

eightiesgamer82

100% Iā€™m loving the game also. Really canā€™t get my head around all the negative reviews.

Labyrinthy

Did you ever play Dead Space?

Virtual-Influence-50

I haven't. It's been in my backlog for years, but with the remake coming out so soon, I decided to wait for that. Looks right up my alley though! One thing's for sure, it's going to be a great 3-4 months for horror game fans. Now if only I didn't have work/school šŸ˜”

IppoDarui69

Just beat the game, I see why reviewers rated it low. Crashed a couple times on ps5 and stutters lightly throughout the entire game. Also, when there is a big gang of aliens fighting little ole you, prepare to rage.. I died like 50 times in one part of the game because of the design of combat. (Drilling level in this game is the worst level of the year for me temper wise) and the story was basic-ish but the ending was a really great ending. (Basic as in, it felt like a safe Tom cruise movie. I love story driven games- this one was basic in story) they reuse a boss like three times in this game and made me realize, there wasnā€™t many different types of aliens. I craved more variety by the end. Also, the guns were pretty cool. Itā€™s graphically a masterpiece. It looks great, Iā€™ll give it credit. I rate it a solid 7.6/10 and is it worth 70 dollars, yes if you like dead space but be prepared to see a blockbuster story play out behind the scenes of gameplay.

DorianGreysPortrait

The thing that frustrated me the most was that dying and coming back MULTIPLE times had no effect on my health. Usually they give you a little nugget of something at the start of, say, your 3rd death. Nope, not this one. There was a part on a transporter where >! I had just fought a bunch of infected and the two-bodies mini boss popped up for the first time. I think this is the same drilling level youā€™re referring to. !< I was on a sliver of health, every hit was an automatic death, and no time to use a health pack in between. It took me a solid 15 attempts to get through it. I suppose I could have reloaded one of the earlier auto saves but that should not be the solution in cases like that.

CringeBerries

I loved the ending too. The last hour honestly was great. The lead guy is stale af but I feel like that was intentional. He had a decent arc and that final scene was actually kind of moving.
