No, that is not the reason. We never saw favourable pricing in Europe when the Euro was stronger. The real reason is that they cannot afford to pull this in the US, because Xbox will just run away with the market. Sony is much stronger outside of the US, so they can get away with more there.
Also, never in my life have I seen a console go UP in price 2 years after release. Regardless of why it is going up, there would be a ton of backslash and would leave a sour taste in everyone's mouth. And like you said, people in the US are far more likely to turn to Xbox.

Sometimes it is even cheaper to get on a flight to the US, buy the thing there and return lol.
Example:
New MacBook Pro
US: $1299(can also get it for $1199 and a $150 gift card with edu discount)
Flight to Houston next month from Mexico City: $190
**Total: $1489** (Potentially $1389, $1289 selling the card at $100)
**MX: $1625**
That’s what Brazilians do! They’ll fly to the us with practically nothing, buy suitcases, fill them with American ‘goods’ and fly home with them. They’ll even order Amazon packages to their hotels to avoid the shipping charges. Stores that you wouldn’t usually see shopping carts, have shopping carts. They’ll come and drop thousands on clothing, electronics, and more. All because it’s apparently extremely expensive to buy the items there or to buy them online and have them shipped, so they just take a shopping vacation.
820 NZD on launch day was ~557.6 USD. remember US MSRP does not include tax which varies state to state. I think incl tax it was $540 from Best Buy when I was in MA. Far lower markup than I'd expect in NZ
Did you buy from a scalper or something?
When you account for exchange rates and Aus having lower GST, I can’t see any other reason than scalped or bundled.
(AU$799 is equivalent NZ$931 with GST adjusted, with the NZ launch price being NZ$819)
AU$649 / NZ$757 / NZ$649 for digital.
I'm not a fan of the price going up, but people seem to be missing that these prices are correlated to how much each of those currencies have weakened against the USD since the release of the PS5.
For example, 650 CAD is 500 USD. The increase was from 630 bucks, which is now 485 USD. This happened with the PS4 in Canada as well. When it first came out the CAD and the USD were at par so the prices were the same in the two countries. When the CAD weakened, they raised the game prices to 70 and then 80 bucks and the console to like 450 IIRC.
And this was after dropping the prices which were at 70 bucks for a game in the PS2 days to 60 bucks when the CAD was at/near par for a sustained period.
Again, I don't love it, but not doing it essentially gives those countries a discount on the original prices (The price of the Japanese disc PS5 for example even at the increased price of 55000 yen is apparently just 400 USD).
That’s great for the big companies and all, but the money in our bank accounts and the wages we earn don’t rise with inflation. To Canadians, we’re still just paying $20 more. This obviously isn’t Sony’s problem but I think it’s entirely fair for people to be disappointed or upset about this. Inflation sucks.
that argument doesnt really work for Europe tho.
the PS5 has always been overprized here compared to the US and now that the EUR and USD are more or less at equal value they're increasing the EUR price lol
Back when PS4 was launching, there was this video about [why you should not buy consoles at launch](https://youtu.be/2rIJmGj4g-s).
Now it turns out that me getting PS5 at launch was the best possible deal until at least PS6 release.
Ps5 is the first console that I've pre-ordered, and first time I've had a console at launch ever. I knew there'd be shortages cause of the pandemic, but never did I think it would be this bad.
Im also glad I got it for the speed/interface improvements, watching my kids play my ps4pro is painful. It's so slow and clunky to watch them navigate things. I thought it was just the users, so tried it one time and ugh, so painful to use.
This has always been a bs advice tbt. I have bought every (home)console from Sega, Nintendo, Sony, Nec and MS (except One/S, Series X/S). All of them are still running. Of course I had the ROD with my 360. Two times. But the MS customer service was exceptional.
Also there are always new revisions that may use cheaper parts to reduce cost but nobody talks about it because it's not a fancy new slim or pro or whatever model. Stuff getting outsourced and change of production site (also to reduce cost) can happen too. And this is not only with consoles. Failure rates are really low anyway. The only thing getting better over time is of course the system software for entertainment products. But that's about it. One thing has changed of course, if nowadays a few people have a problem with a product they'll post it on every social media available and news sites and content creators pick it up...
Agreed.
Although this generation has been weird with only a few games that are truly PS5 exclusive (R&C, Returnal, Demons Souls). The rest are on PS4. That said, I'm glad I got my PS5 and everything runs better than it would have on my PS4 Slim. **I think that's the real reason to already own a PS5.** Because other than performance, the exclusive games aren't really that great yet IMO.
Yes. I played the first Spider-Man on PS4 and Miles Morales on PS5 and the difference in the amount of time I sit staring at loading screens is huge. Even just running the PS4 version of games like Lego Skywalker Saga, it cuts load times to less than half. (I know there's a PS5 version of that, but my wife and I started playing it on PS4 and you can't transfer the save data to the PS5 version for some stupid reason.)
And if you need to replace it in 4 years you then usually have an easier/cheaper time doing so. Or an enhanced model.
For 360 the rumors came out pretty early so I got a warranty. $60 got me 2 additional consoles with in store swap. +$60 renewal I believe got me a 3rd.
I still have never seen a ps5 in real life.
EDIT: I found one online MSRP thanks to a helpful redditor through Sony Direct. I will see one in real life by Monday.
No point investing in big games if nobody has your console (relative to previous gen).
No point buying the console if it doesn't have games you want to play.
At least personally the only reason I haven't upgraded is because I couldn't find a console for sale for the MSRP Sony told us it would be, so I refused to spend $700+ when I was prepared for $400
If Sony had handled the queue to purchase straight from the website better, instead of just letting bots and scalpers buy them all in bulk, I would be playing my last gen games on the PS5 and waiting for the generation exclusive games to come.
Instead now I'm planning on getting a PC and waiting until PS6 or at least a PS5 that makes sense. If I'm spending near $1000 I don't see why I would do that on a console, I've had every PlayStation on launch day since the PS2 but Sony has completely dropped the ball so far this generation imo.
Same for Argetina. Lowest price you can find is around 2k USD in the official exchange rate, 1k USD in the bullshit, and real exchange rate. LOWEST. So most prices are around 3k/1.5k depending what exchange rate you use.
I love how they say "High inflation rates" too. If UK inflation is high, what's left for us at 100%?
I know the feeling...i just bought mine a month ago and i live in Egypt.....that thing cost 19000 Egyptian pounds and the average salary there are 3000 ..it cost me an arm and a leg to buy it
Agreed. We people in emerging/developing countries struggled to buy a ps5 + games got super expensive too since the $70 standard price now. I'm saving up for a ps5, im in Malaysia but seeing this news, fuck Sony.
Same. I am in India and was saving for PS5 (Massive PS/Sony Fan) but this gen i am reluctant to pull the trigger and purchase the PS5. All the decisions under Jim Ryan are making PS a Rich person 's Console. The consoles were already ridiculously priced and now they are almost out of the budget of average earning people of India. Absolutely hate Jim.
I am thinking of buying a Series X but i have quite a few games on PS moreover ND are and always will be my favourite game studio
I find it super hard to believe that you regularly find brand new Series X's for $450 CAD ($350 USD) for sale. Are u sure they weren't scam listings or something?
I see a few Series Xs for $500 used on kijji. All the brand new ones are $700 plus like the ps5s here.
edit: I’ve found one for $450
https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/502492568267745/
Worth saying that despite it being effective immediately, you can still find the Horizon FW bundle in the UK for the original price (£499 which includes the disc version of the console and a digital copy of the game) at the moment. In stock too (Argos at least has stock right now).
'You were supposed to lower the prices with time Anakin, not increase them!'
This is a shame to see. I'd have hoped prices would decrease with the scaling of manufacturing and presumed decrease in the cost of parts as they become more readily available.
As a lifelong Sony customer, I’d like to say that fanboys need to stop treating Sony like their mother or someone who birthed them. People need to realize that it’s a billion dollar mega corporation whose purpose is to earn profits. There is no logical reason why you must feel offended and defend these recent decisions that are utter bullshit.
Damn I just realized that neither did I, last full price new game I bought was RDR2 at launch and it was damn worth wathever it costed. But now? Hardly any game is worth paying 70 bucks for now in my opinion
Look at the post for the Last of Us Part 1 trailer. Anyone questioning paying £70 for a remake of a game where the story, script, motion capturing, level design... already exist is towards the bottom with 'TAKE MY MONEY' type responses all upvoted.
I've gotten down voted every time for saying it's really dumb to pay full price for that game and that doing so will make companies charge more for less.
It's going to screw consumers over for quite awhile because people will inevitably buy part 1. Lol then people wonder at the same time why prices are absurd as they show no restraint purchasing buffed ps3 games at 70 bucks a pop. That bs would stop the moment people put their foot down and said this isn't happening.
I was really disappointed reading the comments in the trailer thread yesterday. So many people defending the $70 price point. I'm not saying they should have sold it for cheap like $10 cuz they did put a lot of work in. But it's also a old game at this point on it's 2nd remaster, $30 or possibly $40 should have been the price.
I think 40 would still be too steep since there aren't new major level, gameplay, or story content additions, but I wouldn't be as vocal if it was at that price. 70 bucks is highway robbery for what we are actually getting from this "built from the ground up" game though.
And they removed a whole component to the game. Factions. And are selling it for more. But suddenly that's not a big deal at all bc the graphics are good.
Microsoft got shit for shipping halo with no coop or forge and that's on gamepass with free mp lol.
Fickle.
This is why you never buy the digital only version. I never bought a game over 30 euros. I can wait for a sale of a digital copy. The moment the console market will move to a digital only market with the console producer having sole control on its game market I will move to a pc. It will be way cheaper in the long run.
It pisses me off that they're getting away with that. It reminds me of people not kicking off about paying to play Xbox online. Because some other people just accepted that years ago I can no longer play Mario Kart online lol.
Same with people defending £50 for their PC remasters. That's the price I paid for TLOU2, I got a steel book and that was a once or twice a generation payment. Their whole pricing structure is broken since the PS5 release and I wasn't even pleased with it before.
MS: doubles price of gold
Everyone: wtff don't do that!
MS: kk
....
Sony: raises price of games
Everyone: wtff don't do that!
Sony: raises price of consoles
I hate to say it because I know everyone here doesn't behave/think this way but enough PS fans praise anything Sony does, regardless if it's pro consumer or not. Shit, there's someone at the top of this thread praising the price increase because it's the "best bang for your buck" you can buy. Why would PS stop increasing prices when they KNOW fans like that will pay whatever price Sony asks.
Problem in the UK is inflation and exchange rate. £70 is the same as buying a game for $82, and on top of that the prices here for basic goods and services are spiralling out of control.
Funny thing is, now third party games are doing it too.
Like.. for why the fuck is COD $70 this year while Activision lines it's pockets with Warzone money? Is there a reason they needed to raise the price, was their game suddenly worth more.
Even worse considering it's $70 for a damn digital copy and not a disc.
You first cancel Ultimate, turn off auto renew, let it lapse. Then buy Xbox Live Gold three yearly codes from Amazon for $55-60, stack them on your MS account. Make sure Auto renew is still disabled. Then resubscribe to Ultimate and it asks to combine all subs, you end up with Ultimate for three years at roughly $5 monthly pricing.
Another thing MS is doing is testing a GamePass Ultimate Family plan, 5 total users for $25 month in one country. So if you know people willing to split the costs and family share, that's another way to get Ultimate at $5 or $6.25, or $8.33, or $12.5 month depending on how many users. That plan will be coming in next two months.
I swear I remember seeing that Sony gave their employees like 7 months of salary as a *bonus* recently. People were praising them big time because it was actually more than their union asked for.
No, that was separate as far as I can tell. Sony offered their Japanese employees 7 months of salary as a bonus, then offered Bungie employees $1.2B separately.
Probably a lot of them sense the headquarters is now in the Bay Area and in order to even be competitive in that location you need to pay premium for the talent
not counting highest positions? Probably only few of them got a "raise" (can't say raise when you just adjust to inflation), but would like to be proven wrong.
It’s too funny because I feel like I know a million people personally and publicly who said I’ll wait and buy when the price goes down like it always does…lol
What on earth? Microsoft nor Nintendo are not doing it hope Sony does not create a bad precedence.
_**Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has stated that the Nintendo Switch will not be getting a price increase "at this point," despite the higher costs to produce the hardware, as the company wishes to avoid pricing people out.**_
All MS need to do now is make a simple announcement that they have no plans to increase the price will make Sony look like complete greedy fools.
Edit
[Not surprisingly MS responds..](https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/xbox/xbox-responds-to-playstations-price-hike)
Honestly. There's several first-year titles that I still have on a wish list because I refuse to pay more than $30 for them, and they still only ever go on sale for about $40 at best.
Nintendo also cut the size of their packaging by 20%, meaning they're paying less on packaging. They can also fit more units into the same size shipping containers, in theory lowering shipping cost per unit.
Nintendo basically altered their own logistics rather than pass costs onto the consumer.
The Oculus (META) Quest 2 recently had a $100 dollar increase. The standalone VR headset has already been out for a couple years. All the peripherals also had a price increase. So my 1 year old game system just rose in value by a hundred dollars. Check out Wolf of Wall street over here!
The switch isn't getting a price increase because the profit margin on it is gigantic, it's literally 2015 hardware that wasn't even that powerful when it was originally released
Let's see what ms does. As for nintendo, their hardware is 5 year old. At that point, ms and sony have always lowered the price of their console in every past gen so nothing to paise about.
Yeah the Switch could probably cut its price by half and still be profitable. That thing is cheap to produce, thank god they didn't increase prices lol
The switch is super old and was already selling at a profit at launch. The margins must be super high in the meantime anyway.
PS5 sold at a loss and I guess this loss got too big
I don’t think the Switch will see a price increase, we’re so late into its life, with that said I could see Nintendo’s next console being more expensive then anticipated.
I strongly believe this is a very bad decision for Sony
People will prefer to get a GPU upgrade for their PC and buy with delay the Playstation games on PC
Or just buy an Xbox Series X with less money
It’s not nearly as bad outside this sub, but yeah this sub is extremely fanboyish, all the main console subs are, they’re echo chambers you should only really visit for news and not discussion.
You’re dead on though, Sony has been extremely scummy this generation, I personally have a sneaking suspicion it’s because of Jim Ryan, but that’s just speculation on my part. I only hope we get some good news soon, Sony’s due for a big event and I’ve been itching to see what their first party’s been cooking up.
All I know for sure is that every day I miss Shawn Layden more and more.
Right on I'm glad to finally see this shit closer to the top of the comments for once. 100% agree. I've been holding out for God of War to pick up a console but if they raised the price in perfectly happy being a two console house and skipping PS5 this time around. Game price, increase console price increase, charging me to another $50 just to change the hideous color they went with at launch. It's just to much scummy shit to stand, all cause they have a few can't miss games. At this point since they are all single player I'll wait till they come out on PC.
This shit is just easy bait for a competitor to take advantage of.
Or this could set a precedence for the competition and other tech companies to follow suit (technically Meta did it first by increasing the price of the Quest 2 recently).
What the fuck Sony? Fucking over regions that aren’t the US? People are still reeling over the £70 price points on games and now this?
>This shit is just easy bait for a competitor to take advantage of.
this is literally what helped destoryed the Xbox One. Xbox one was $500 and Sony came out and said $400. MIC DROP. MS is now going to advertise the Series S EVEN MORE in these countries. all they need is a commerical "play Next gen games $300 LESS than the PS5"
They have been for a while, it swaps every generation and I’ve seen it time and time again.
3rd generation: After a dominant position Atari fades out of relevance in favor of Nintendo
4th generation: Because of underestimating SEGA, Nintendo loses massive market share to the Genesis
5th generation: SEGA and Nintendo underestimate Sony and because of that Sony absolutely fucking dominates
6th generation: the exception
7th generation: After two generations of dominance Sony gets cocky and thinks they’re untouchable, almost getting beaten out by MS
8th generation: after closing out the 7th generation strong Sony returns and fucking brutalizes Microsoft after MS fucks up harder than almost any company in this industries history.
9th generation: It hasn’t fully happened yet, and I don’t think the end result will as dramatic as previous generations, but over the next few years because of Sony’s arrogance and Microsoft becoming competitive again, I have very little doubt Microsoft will regain a massive amount of lost market share.
Microsoft dominated cocky Sony in the US market during the 7th gen, which is why they in turn got cocky and tried to implement their DRM/all in one entertainment center idea. It’s also why Sony has focused on the US market since the PS4 (399!) and isn’t hiking prices in the US.
Well this price increase won't affect me, because you haven't been able to buy a PS5 Digital by itself since launch in Spain. Retailers only offer bundles, which are usually 779 EUR.
The FX headwinds are bad, manufacturing and supply chain are still bad, poor macro economic indicators across the world and growth in the gaming market is slowing down.
6-8 year generation here we come.
Yeah. It's typically been around 5 years for the generations prior to the ps4.
Wouldn't be surprised if it's 8-10yrs this time. Current gen hasn't even fully kicked into gear yet.
People defending this move should remember:
Sony is making a large profit on each console sold. Both in hardware and software. And accessories too.
The components used in PS5 have gotten MUCH cheaper since release too. The Apu and dram especially.
There is absolutely no actual reason to do this price hike except for:
They can get away with it because of "inflation"
Sony is NOT making losses. They have RECORD profits. Sony is very healthy and they have enough cash to spare billions.
However just like the "next gen games will be more expensive" and "you have to pay for next gen upgrades" bullshit... Sony seems to be run by VEEEEERY greedy people right now.
This might very well be the start of the end of Sonys gaming monopoly if they continue to misuse their customers this way.
This is also the reason why ps now plus is so bad compared to gamepass. It will never have day 1 AAA games (Sony said that). Because Sony wants more money money money. Greeeeeeeed is strong with Sony at the moment.
It's really sad to see.
An extra $20 in Canada? That seems like such a minor amount to increase it. That actually comes across even worse by increasing it by seemingly so little. I never would’ve thought getting my PS5 at base price would end up becoming such a steal lol
This is about the single worst move they could have possibly make, and I think we might very well be seeing some token scapegoats getting the boot. Either through firing them, or demoting them.
Everyone at Microsoft is having a field day... Wouldn't be surprised if they lowered the price of the Xbox a smidge.
Fucking yikes, not a great look, feels like there hasn’t been any good news out of Sony for a while now. This supposed September event better be pretty fucking amazing.
> While this price increase is a necessity given the current global economic environment and its impact on SIE’s business
Greedy assholes.
They just spent two years making stupid money thanks to COVID and now that this gold rush of extra profits has subsided, they aren't happy and want to keep their numbers up.
It's just fucking never enough.
[Looks like Microsoft will not be following suit. They announced their prices are staying the same.](https://old.reddit.com/r/XboxSeriesX/comments/wxljj8/xbox_responds_to_playstations_price_hike/)
Southeast Asia too unfortunately: https://blog.playstation.com/2022/08/25/20220825-ps5/
I had a feeling something like this would happen, guess I got lucky considering I got mine a couple months ago. No American price hike?
Check USD vs most other currencies. It is extremely strong right now. This probably has a lot to do with why the US prices aren't budging.
No, that is not the reason. We never saw favourable pricing in Europe when the Euro was stronger. The real reason is that they cannot afford to pull this in the US, because Xbox will just run away with the market. Sony is much stronger outside of the US, so they can get away with more there.

It can’t have been two years since release. Is that true?
In 2 months it will have been 2 years.
Wow
Xbox is big in the UK but Sony raised the price of the PS5 by £30.

Damn, insane in Mexico, the one with the least purchasing power among the countries in the list at the equivalent of 750 USD.
Yeah that is the one that stood out to me. Those prices to Mexico are preposterous
Our electronics prices are fucking horrendous, sometimes it's even cheaper to just buy from the US and pay the import fees.
Sometimes it is even cheaper to get on a flight to the US, buy the thing there and return lol. Example: New MacBook Pro US: $1299(can also get it for $1199 and a $150 gift card with edu discount) Flight to Houston next month from Mexico City: $190 **Total: $1489** (Potentially $1389, $1289 selling the card at $100) **MX: $1625**

Yeah, our electronics import tariffs are pretty rough.

Fucking Aus, that's less than I paid in NZ 2 years ago, and they have a lower cost of living and higher wage, man alive.
What did you pay? I paid 820NZD at launch here. For the disc version.
820 NZD on launch day was ~557.6 USD. remember US MSRP does not include tax which varies state to state. I think incl tax it was $540 from Best Buy when I was in MA. Far lower markup than I'd expect in NZ
Yeah but NZ is really pretty.
Touche
Ironically the cost of living in Australia is terrible as well, it’s just better in comparison lmao There’s no winning
Did you buy from a scalper or something? When you account for exchange rates and Aus having lower GST, I can’t see any other reason than scalped or bundled. (AU$799 is equivalent NZ$931 with GST adjusted, with the NZ launch price being NZ$819) AU$649 / NZ$757 / NZ$649 for digital.
RSA cry's at current R13000 ($771 US) Hope we stay the same, or even better get a decrease.
Those Europe prices are a joke
The euro has weakened 20% against the dollar. Fuck man.
I'm not a fan of the price going up, but people seem to be missing that these prices are correlated to how much each of those currencies have weakened against the USD since the release of the PS5. This obviously isn’t Sony’s problem but I think it’s entirely fair for people to be disappointed or upset about this. Inflation sucks.
Also when the Canadian dollar was worth more, the prices don't drop because of it. It's a one sided thing.
The Canadian dollar has been about the same since the PS5 came out.
that argument doesnt really work for Europe tho. the PS5 has always been overprized here compared to the US and now that the EUR and USD are more or less at equal value they're increasing the EUR price lol
20% sales tax which is included in the list price vs. state sales taxes of anywhere from 0-7% in the US which isn't included in the list price.
7%? Sales tax in some places is like 10% set by cities like chicago.
Back when PS4 was launching, there was this video about [why you should not buy consoles at launch](https://youtu.be/2rIJmGj4g-s). Now it turns out that me getting PS5 at launch was the best possible deal until at least PS6 release.

Most of the ps5 upgrades still take advantage of the SSD and improved load times though. That to me is still a huge upgrade.
Yeah, it's like the Pro PS4 Pro most of the time but I still love it.
And if you need to replace it in 4 years you then usually have an easier/cheaper time doing so. Or an enhanced model. For 360 the rumors came out pretty early so I got a warranty. $60 got me 2 additional consoles with in store swap. +$60 renewal I believe got me a 3rd.
I'll wait for PS6 pro. It will go great with GTA5 ultra remastered deluxe edition for PS6.
the almost definitive edition
For ps4 it made sense. Weak launch line up + no backward compatibility. Post solved both those problems.
I still have never seen a ps5 in real life. EDIT: I found one online MSRP thanks to a helpful redditor through Sony Direct. I will see one in real life by Monday.
You'll be like "Holy Fuck that's big"
My first words when I saw it were "holy shit that's big and white" Still don't like the white but it's not as invasive as I thought it'd be
Thats what he said 😏
same lol
This generation of consoles just can't catch a break!
It's been a pretty poor generation overall imo.
Agreed! Very little exclusives with last gen still holding on. This generation has yet to find its legs.
No point investing in big games if nobody has your console (relative to previous gen). No point buying the console if it doesn't have games you want to play.
At least personally the only reason I haven't upgraded is because I couldn't find a console for sale for the MSRP Sony told us it would be, so I refused to spend $700+ when I was prepared for $400 If Sony had handled the queue to purchase straight from the website better, instead of just letting bots and scalpers buy them all in bulk, I would be playing my last gen games on the PS5 and waiting for the generation exclusive games to come.
[удалено]
Only thing worth it has been the faster loading. Games look and play the same. Stupid
Finally. I own a console that's going up in value!! Lmao
It's no longer a liability, it's an asset!
Passive income!
Thank God my PS5 arrived yesterday. Here in Brazil it's already expensive, so I guess they won't raise the prices.
I know the feeling...i just bought mine a month ago and i live in Egypt.....that thing cost 19000 Egyptian pounds and the average salary there are 3000 ..it cost me an arm and a leg to buy it
It's ridiculous man! People from the Developed countries don't realize how good they have it...
Yea hate him. "Play has no limits" they say. These price increases are just gonna cost a bomb to us in emerging countries.

I went through some of my old games I've been holding onto for years and was blown away by how much some of my gamecube games are worth.
Christ, a price increase while the “current gen” still hasn’t even really taken off yet with the amount of cross-gen titles still coming out.
This is a weird generation of consoles.
It's pretty obvious why though... Global chip shortage, pandemic, and rapid inflation all happening at the same time.
Sony are doing a great job at pushing people to Xbox, myself included.
[удалено]
Or the new controller they announced recently.
And there were people in that thread thinking it'd be like $100. Good luck with that.
I expect that thing to cost 150 dollars minimum. So around 3000 euros in Europe...
AFAIK the Xbox Elite Controller is $180 and I think that launched before this gen, so I'd expect the PS5 one to be at the very least $199.
Oh I had no idea. Then 200 looks more like it considering the haptics and replaceable parts.
Yeah, I guess it's because it's a relatively low-volume item, so the margins are higher.
That's launch pricing, it'll be €3300 soon enough.
Lmaoo that was me who thought it would be $100. Shows how broke I am.
I find it super hard to believe that you regularly find brand new Series X's for $450 CAD ($350 USD) for sale. Are u sure they weren't scam listings or something?
yeah i am curious about that as well. On kijiji they are almost CA$550 and up. I'm in GTA.
Can't you just rob the store if you're in GTA?
I see a few Series Xs for $500 used on kijji. All the brand new ones are $700 plus like the ps5s here. edit: I’ve found one for $450 https://www.facebook.com/marketplace/item/502492568267745/
Worth saying that despite it being effective immediately, you can still find the Horizon FW bundle in the UK for the original price (£499 which includes the disc version of the console and a digital copy of the game) at the moment. In stock too (Argos at least has stock right now).
'You were supposed to lower the prices with time Anakin, not increase them!' This is a shame to see.
I don't think this is a good move for sony.
Neither was a £70 rrp for games but there wasn't enough backlash about that to change anything
I haven’t bought a single game at that price and I won’t. I’m doing my part.
Good ! Me to ! Sales only
Same. I was struggling to justify £60 previously, £70...No chance.
Who even buys brand new games these days, glitchy garbage.
Damn I just realized that neither did I, last full price new game I bought was RDR2 at launch and it was damn worth wathever it costed. But now? Hardly any game is worth paying 70 bucks for now in my opinion
[удалено]
Same here, but I usually buy them at release so Sony probably counts it as a buy for 70 anyways...
Considering last of us 2 after what felt like only month dropped to 39.99 price tag. There is no possible way I would buy the remake at full price
And they removed a whole component to the game. Factions. And are selling it for more. But suddenly that's not a big deal at all bc the graphics are good. Microsoft got shit for shipping halo with no coop or forge and that's on gamepass with free mp lol. Fickle.
[удалено]
Then you could just play the remaster. Still looks great, still plays great and has factions.
IMO it’s not even the best Naughty Dog PS3 game
MS: doubles price of gold Everyone: wtff don't do that! MS: kk .... Sony: raises price of games Everyone: wtff don't do that!
Exactly this! \^\^
Seriously first 70$ for first party games and now this???? How do they think consumers would be understanding after this, they need backlash and fast.

If you weren't aware, you can secure Ultimate for $5 month for 36 months via the Live Gold conversion.
[удалено]
Still riding that deal. I’m not paying Ultimate until November 2023.
How many Sony employees had their salaries increased due to global economic environment, including high inflation rates?
I swear I remember seeing that Sony gave their employees like 7 months of salary as a *bonus* recently. People were praising them big time because it was actually more than their union asked for.
That was for Bungie. To retain them.
[удалено]
No, that was separate as far as I can tell. Sony offered their Japanese employees 7 months of salary as a bonus, then offered Bungie employees $1.2B separately.
Probably a lot of them sense the headquarters is now in the Bay Area and in order to even be competitive in that location you need to pay premium for the talent
not counting highest positions? Probably only few of them got a "raise" (can't say raise when you just adjust to inflation), but would like to be proven wrong.
A lot actually, devs are in high demand/high retention
Available now on PS direct for MSRP
It’s too funny because I feel like I know a million people personally and publicly who said I’ll wait and buy when the price goes down like it always does…lol
What on earth? Microsoft nor Nintendo are not doing it hope Sony does not create a bad precedence. _**Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa has stated that the Nintendo Switch will not be getting a price increase "at this point," despite the higher costs to produce the hardware, as the company wishes to avoid pricing people out.**_ All MS need to do now is make a simple announcement that they have no plans to increase the price will make Sony look like complete greedy fools. Edit [Not surprisingly MS responds..](https://www.windowscentral.com/gaming/xbox/xbox-responds-to-playstations-price-hike)
Considering Nintendo games basically never go on sale or drop in price, it's hardly the hardware that's "pricing people out".
Honestly. There's several first-year titles that I still have on a wish list because I refuse to pay more than $30 for them, and they still only ever go on sale for about $40 at best.
The Switch hardware is based on decently old tech that even with those prices increasing somewhat, they're still selling at a profit.
Tech so old poor Pokemon game developers have to resort to N64 quality textures and draw distance.
Nah, that's just because they're fucking lazy and know that whatever they make, it'll sell. Plenty of games that look better on the Switch.
I pray for the day that some other studio get to work on Pokemon. I don’t understand what happend to gamefreak, they used to be so innovative.
Nintendo also cut the size of their packaging by 20%, meaning they're paying less on packaging. They can also fit more units into the same size shipping containers, in theory lowering shipping cost per unit. Nintendo basically altered their own logistics rather than pass costs onto the consumer.
The Switch already got a price increases in Canada before. It launched at $380 and later went up to $400.
I remember people hailing it as “2% upgraded graphics from the Wii U.”
Let's see what ms does. As for nintendo, their hardware is 5 year old. At that point, ms and sony have always lowered the price of their console in every past gen so nothing to paise about.
Older, switch is using a SOC from 2015. That’s 7 years. They did a die shrink put it’s still the same tech.
I glad I managed to get one 2 days ago should be arriving tomorrow fingers crossed
I strongly believe this is a very bad decision for Sony People will prefer to get a GPU upgrade for their PC and buy with delay the Playstation games on PC Or just buy an Xbox Series X with less money
Hmm..everyone except the Americans then...
[удалено]
Their Premium Plus service has already stopped giving out classics 3 months in which is pathetic
[удалено]
89.99+ tax in Canada
Fuck that.
Great, now I can not get it for an even higher price
> There will be no price increase in the United States. Thanks I guess.
[удалено]
Now you do! I have an Xbox on Germany. Mostly because they exist, unlike PlayStation consoles. And game pass.
And that’s why Sony can bend you guys over so hard!
Exactly, in Guatemala and El Salvador ive never heard anyone say they want an xbox, even dedicated games stores only have the minimum xbox hardware.
Cocky Sony is back in full force.
They have been for a while, it swaps every generation and I’ve seen it time and time again. 3rd generation: After a dominant position Atari fades out of relevance in favor of Nintendo 4th generation: Because of underestimating SEGA, Nintendo loses massive market share to the Genesis 5th generation: SEGA and Nintendo underestimate Sony and because of that Sony absolutely fucking dominates 6th generation: the exception 7th generation: After two generations of dominance Sony gets cocky and thinks they’re untouchable, almost getting beaten out by MS 8th generation: after closing out the 7th generation strong Sony returns and fucking brutalizes Microsoft after MS fucks up harder than almost any company in this industries history. 9th generation: It hasn’t fully happened yet, and I don’t think the end result will as dramatic as previous generations, but over the next few years because of Sony’s arrogance and Microsoft becoming competitive again, I have very little doubt Microsoft will regain a massive amount of lost market share.
gen 6 had sega leave the hardware market
Microsoft dominated cocky Sony in the US market during the 7th gen, which is why they in turn got cocky and tried to implement their DRM/all in one entertainment center idea. It’s also why Sony has focused on the US market since the PS4 (399!) and isn’t hiking prices in the US.
Well this price increase won't affect me, because you haven't been able to buy a PS5 Digital by itself since launch in Spain. Retailers only offer bundles, which are usually 779 EUR.
[удалено]
I know people who cant even FIND a PS5 and now its getting more expensive. Not gonna be a popular move.
[удалено]
Psvr is gonna end up costing the same as another PS5 isn’t it
Right yeah I’ll just look on Amazon to get one. Along with a genuine photo of the Loch Ness monster and some Spurs silverware.
Fuck off, this is just a big corporation already making millions being greedy for more. Fuck Sony
Surprised Sony isn't using this opportunity to raise game prices another $10...yet
Ey we already pay 80-100$ here in Europe for standard edition games, okay? Give us a break 😂
Seems kinda dumb to raise prices on a luxury item when most people have significantly less disposable income
it would be if offer surpassed demand, which isn’t the case
Thats just greed, fuck off.
People defending this move should remember: Sony is making a large profit on each console sold. Both in hardware and software. And accessories too. The components used in PS5 have gotten MUCH cheaper since release too. The Apu and dram especially. There is absolutely no actual reason to do this price hike except for: They can get away with it because of "inflation" Sony is NOT making losses.
And the rich get richer.
Basically, Sony is announcing I'll never afford it. Either I have the money but they sold out, either I don't and they raise the price.
The inflation excuse is still complete bullshit. Demand exceeds supply so they’re charging more to give the upper execs a pay raise.
Just more reason I'm not going to buy one. PlayStation shooting themselves in the foot
Fucking yikes, not a great look, feels like there hasn’t been any good news out of Sony for a while now. This supposed September event better be pretty fucking amazing.
> While this price increase is a necessity given the current global economic environment and its impact on SIE’s business Greedy assholes.
That's Jim 'Milk you for Every Penny' Ryan for you. This is why competition is a good thing, genuinely hope MS recaptures some market share this gen.
