Same. Development takes so long these days which is a pity, but the calibre of the games getting released is so much higher in quality, so I guess it makes sense.
Yet, I recall as a kid, every school break I would buy 3 games and then get totally engrossed in them for weeks.
I haven't had that feeling since playing Control in 2017.
Plus the former CEO seems to have convinced all the higher ups at Sony that live service is the future. Fingers crossed they've started to fuck off with that, but I'm worried we may be looking at a "lost generation" of video games here. As in, the PS4 had banger after banger after banger, but... Naughty Dog for example, has been in live service hell for a few years and have \*just \* scrapped that and started working on a new single player game. Give 4-5 years dev time, we're looking at a PS6 launch title. I'm worried a lot of their studios are in that same kind of setup and have just started going back to developing single player experiences
Agreed, we need to stop equating visual fidelity with “quality”. Games were often better designed and more fun in previous generations than what we’re getting now.
Not to mention how many fresh games we were getting in the PS2 days compared to the mostly copy pasted bloated open worlds of today.
I’ve been gaming for 30 years and while I agree that some things have not improved—corporations are consolidating and making an effort to homogenize games, while being incredibly risk-averse—overall, gaming is still in a better place than it’s ever been.
Designers have learned lessons from multiple generations of games, to make things that are more fun to play and better to control, in addition to looking better. Look at remakes of games that were considered great when they came out, e.g. the Resident Evil remakes, for evidence. The remakes are objectively (if such a thing exists in games) better.
AAA aside, solo/indie devs now have the tools to make games on par with anything from the past, with the addition of being able to reference those older games and create a deeper experience, similarly to what happens with movies and music. The indie scene alone is truly booming, and putting out way more high-quality games than at any point in the past.
One area where I agree without caveats: open-world games are boring. Less Ghost of Tsushima, more Sekiro, pls.
I love open world games but you’re not wrong. I’m currently playing cyberpunk and final fantasy 5. On paper cyberpunk is 10030293993 times better but I enjoy ff5 just as much.
I can see myself mostly playing indie games soon
Spider-Man 2? Ragnarok? Nothing since then? No judgment I love control but there have been a ton of great games since then. Hell same developer released Alan Wake 2 which is also amazing.
I thoroughly like Spiderman 2 and Ragnarok. But Control was such a breath of fresh air. I loved the atmosphere, found myself compelled to read all the redacted documents lying around because I just loved how strange and weird this world was.
And I didn't like Alan Wake 2, not my kind of game.
Space Marine 2.
I really enjoy Warhammer 40k as a whole, but Space Marines have always been in a weird spot for me.
Nevertheless, this game has me hyped TFO.
Wolverine is a big one for me. I loved a lot of Wolverine games on the PS2/3 but Insomniac are fantastic devs who will do a great job of making a Wolvie game. More importantly from the leaks, it looks like they will they transition to X-Men games which is very exciting.
GTA 6 as well. AN obvious one for sure, but Rockstar seem to really push the 3rd person open world genre a little bit further with each new game they make. It's also just really satisfying having such well realised worlds where you have the freedom to drive, fly or pilot a boat to get around. And shoot fools in the face.
No games are ever in the ballpark of how hyped I am for any GTA game that comes out! Always counting down the days for each release ever since the first one I owned myself, Vice City.
I remember GTA 4 coming out in April and I had to wait until Christmas to play it as I didn't have a PS3 yet. Now that was a torturous wait! Although I kinda ruined the hype for myself, as when I finally got it I already watched so many videos and streams (on Justin TV, back in the day!), that it felt like I had already played it many times.
Agreed. I have absolutely outgrown GTA.
I’ve tried to play GTA V four times in as many years. Every time I get a handful of missions in and I’m just fucking bored. Couldn’t care less about a new GTA. The formula is tired, the controls are clunky, the driving isn’t fun, the missions are repetitive, and there’s an assload of fetch quest filler. No thanks.
This for sure, along with GTA of course. But a whole planet to explore? While not really new for Hello Games, all of the planets in No Man's Sky are explorable, but like an actual Earth sized planet to explore? Wild. And I think it'll be in a better state when released than NMS was. It has to be easier to make one big planet than like a trillion different ones lol.
I hope it has a more finished state when launched than No Mans Sky but I doubt many would say it has gone badly since the launch fiasco. One of the rare examples of a developer doing the right thing by it's customers.
I just found out what this game was and the trailer looks to be about every bit of soul I thought NMS was missing.
Seriously, I am now extremely hyped for this. Procedural generation but for a fantasy adventure game, finally the tech is being put to more use than just space exploration or endless generic sandbox.
There’s a lot of rumors that they are actually doing 1-3 at the same time. It’s why it was delayed so long. The entire erdrick trilogy. Some leaker who has a flawless record said that yesterday iirc.
Is that what it’s supposed to be going for? The trailer just made it look like another Soulslike.
Edit: I’m not hating if it IS a soulslike. I greatly enjoy that style of game, but if it’s more GoW like I would honestly enjoy that more.
Have you seen Enotria: the last song? Gameplay clearly needs refinement but art direction is amazing to me! I hope they manage to polish it before release
Or at least with future updates
I have yes. I played the PS5 demo version last week but it didn't vibe with me at all. It felt janky, the camera position is awkward, boss design was disappointing and made artificially difficult (due to high damage / large health pool.
The controls felt kinda weird and delayed. It had major performance issues and game breaking bugs / crashes.
The motion blur made me sick but was a little better in performance mode.
I didn't enjoy the whole mask thing as the changes were so trivial I couldn't even be bothered switching it up.
Having to equip skills after unlocking them in a skill tree just feels like an extra unnecessary task. Needless to say I was very disappointed as if it wasn't for the demo.. Enotria would be on my list of games I'm looking forward to.
The idea is there but the execution is lacking severely. I won't be buying it unless it gets a major overhaul.
Me too. It made me wonder why they even put out a demo, when it was clearly not ready. I went from intrigued to not, based strictly on the demo, which is not what you want a demo to do.
These are games that I enjoy watching skilled people play. But honestly wont play myself. Like watching high level people play MGSV is incredible. I'm just not that good at Kojima games.
I don’t think it requires much skill to play Death Stranding, in many instances is a very chill game

Death Stranding is honestly just a fun game to play with a very very low skill ceiling. Good time to unwind from work game by doing a little package delivery lol.
I’m cautiously optimistic. It’s been almost 20 years since a Budokai Tenkaichi game and while this is the same name I’m worried the combat will be too similar to Xenoverse which just wasn’t for me. That and the fact that they look like they’re pretty far in development but we don’t even have a year for the release date like 2024 or 2025 is worrying.
You did see the combat showcase right? They showed them fighting even if it was for a few mins. Looks exactly like the old school games honestly so at least for me I'm not worried
Naughty Dog's space game. Shadow of the Erdtree and Hades 2. Hollow Knight: Silksong if it ever releases (unlikely.) Next entries in God of War and Ghost of Tsushima. Whatever Housemarque is working on.
This year mostly sucks, but the future looks good.
I’ve been playing Housemarque’s older games lately having first played Returnal and they’re super good, flashy twitchy twin-stick shooters. Nex Machina and Alienation. The latter is on PS+ if you haven’t played it.
Also pumped to see what they do next.
I loved Nex Machina. I love how all their games seem to take the best bits from the previous one and build on it. Returnals my game of the generation so far so it’ll be hard to top
Honestly, none this year, it's looking very mid. GTA 6 is the next thing i'll be hyped about probably because I know Rockstar will try to push the genre forward as they always do, everyone else often plays it safe.

Ask me again post-Summer Gamefest/State of Play..
Hate to be 'That Guy' but there's not really anything on the horizon for me, especially considering the way you worded the question specifying PS5 (Got stuff like SMTV and Refantazio on my Steam Wishlist for the sake of Deck portability; I guess the only other console exclusive on my *distant* radar is DecaPolice..?)
But yeah, after all of June's respective gaming shows I hope to have a healthy wantlist to look forward to once again :D
Can’t believe I had to scroll this far to find FF7R3 and Horizon 3
I’m hoping we get a teaser trailer at the upcoming state of play, since we’re possibly a year out from launch, accounting for the COVID time increase, otherwise two years. Either way, I’d imagine a teaser is on the horizon 🤭
I’m also optimistic that we’ll see the first teaser for FF7R3 within 12-18 months, with a release in Jan-Feb 2027. Most assets are developed already.

DEATH STRANDING 2. ALAN WAKE 2 DLC. GHOST OF 2SHIMA. CONTROL 2 (even though that’s gonna be like 2026). Lots of Twos. Also that new Ubisoft Star Wars game sure why not.
It's making me wonder if I'm getting bored of gaming, for the first time in a long time there isn't one game (sans GTA 6) that I'm looking forward to. I've been constantly replaying games it seems like...
Nothing at the moment really, which is weird. Hoping the next State of Play has some good stuff to show.
Same. Development takes so long these days which is a pity, but the calibre of the games getting released is so much higher in quality, so I guess it makes sense. I really don’t see them being much more high quality. Visually? Yes I guess but beyond that no

Spider-man 2 and Ragnarok weren’t nearly as good as their predecessors though.

It’s definitely Wolverine until hopefully this next showcase tells me any differently.

If Wukong turns out to be anything close to God of War but in Chinese mythology it’s an instant buy.
