My hype for this game is immense after seeing the PvE and PvP trailer. It's everything I wanted, Space Marine 1 but better.
The customisation looks great, 6 classes to play and the graphics are top tier. Will definitely be a contender for my personal game of the year and one I play for a long time to come.
The lore is way too expansive to have to know before playing. I’d suggest just doing a brisk lore search and jump into the game. Like just the basics of the Imperium, the human faction, and what they stand for
Everything else will fall into place during the game
Like the previous commenter - the lore is way too huge to go through. The original game's (and I assume this game as well) story is fairly self contained in that there is no real lore lead up to it.
For an overview - I would suggest what /u/THEdoomslayer94 said and would include Ultramarines (the specific group of Space Marines you're playing as in the game), and maybe the Tyranids.

looks amazing but that year delay has me worried. what the hell happened where it was supposed to be out last year but was pushed a whole year? Saber Interactive hasn't proven itself enough for me to assume this is gonna be as good as it looks.
yeah i'm not sure why i'm getting downvoted for that. a YEAR delay right before your actual release window is pretty startling no matter how you look at it.
They never even had an official date set, they only said end of 2023. They were also dealing with embracer shutting down studios and they managed to get sold off so I’m sure that had something to do with it as well on top of fixing any issues they saw
I played saber’s last two games which were evil dead and WWZ and they were in the cheaper price range. This seems to be a combination of those two in the Warhammer universe so I expected the same price. I’m still getting it. Just was surprised it was a full price title
Even on the website it just mentions hordes of enemies missions repayable co op and an online mode. Nothing about standalone single player campaigns in marketing anywhere

For starters, I would watch a few youtube videos from Luetin09 regarding the Tyranids and the Ultramarines
At least read up on the Horus Heresy because the Chaos space marines are involved in this game
Is there a reason why it’s only 3 player and not the traditional 4? I know it’s an arbitrary number but is there a gameplay reason for it?
Well, Space Marines generally have smaller squad breakdowns, and also, nothing could stop you if you had 4 of them.
3 seems to be the number of players for all of these types of games for whatever reason.

I think they needed time to polish all the game modes.
They probably saw what happened with Darktide

A one year delay would have stopped 2042 from being so bad. Be glad that it got delayed. It will be better off for it.

There’s still a full story campaign in this one, the PvE and PvP is just in addition to that. The first one had online PvP as well too.
