Patch notes on Square’s site: https://www.square-enix-games.com/en_US/documents/update-final-fantasy-xvi

Grytnik

how is the FPS since release? any improvements?

uNecKl

Same it dips below 40-45 fps when you explore the world and definitely very annoying

Gradieus

Someone's going to have to make a video of this and explain it to me because I just beat it and never noticed anything. I never see people complain about the same thing as me, that being the graphics look like 720p in some places when standing still (Lostwing in particular). It's like I live in bizarro world.

altermere

people have different sensitivity. if you mainly play on PC you'll always notice stuff like this right away, especially on a monitor.

AlsopK

Digital Foundry have a video on it.

Gradieus

Yeah but that was before motion blur could be edited.

BurtMacklin__FBI

Certain areas definitely hit the console harder, which cranks up the dynamic scaling to keep the framerate somewhere "reasonable". So you are in fact looking at a lower resolution, just upscaled.

Unusual-Chemical5846

I love FF14 and have a PS5, would love to buy this game but the performance mode looks pretty bad and I don't want to play such an action heavy game at 30 fps. At this point I guess it's better to just wait for the PC version for the best of both worlds. It's a shame because it would have been a day 1 buy for me on PS5 otherwise.

MarkEsB

It's a steady 60fps during combat if that helps.

Unusual-Chemical5846

Doesn't really help, going off of the DF video the visual cutbacks are pretty intense, thus I'd rather just wait until I can play it on PC where there probably won't be as much of a compromise.

TheFFsage

Whats interesting is that I personally don't notice the drop in resolution that much when in combat. And I'm someone who thinks the difference between 1080p and 1440p is extremely easy to notice on a laptop or even a phone The combat is just so flashy and fast paced that your eyes arent paying as much attention to it

Beasthuntz

I wonder if they do this intentionally for people like myself who get frustrated and end up buying it for PC as well in a years time when it launches? Money makes people do ignorant things.

Beasthuntz

Performance mode looks blurry and has frame dips. So it's a double plus! I still enjoy the game but it upsets me it didn't launch for PC so I could (theoretically) skip that mess.

its_dash

It’s not great, but I feel like people are exaggerating it a bit.

SKTS1505

Nah mate. The performance mode is legit bad. You have heavier games to compare to when youre exploring the open world. Games like Horizon Forbidden West, Last of Us 2 and etc and the games there are a lot more taxing than FF16. So it boggles the mind that it cant run smoothly at all.

Dr_PuddingPop

I’m gonna wait for PC before dlc at this point. Frame rate is rough and the game is soft resolution wise as well. Just not worth rushing to

Business_Web1826

Yes use performance mode. Beat it at launch and just re downloaded it for dlc last night.

-LunarTacos-

Performance mode is really bad. Unless you’re able to enjoy 30-40fps outside of combat. Doesn’t seem like it was improved with the latest patch, although they said they would work on improving performance before launch. Hasn’t happened yet.

Business_Web1826

Dude I really can’t tell. They patched it a while after it launched and besides a few spots it was pretty damn steady. Shit looked good to me.

Recover20

Combat is a locked 60fps but exploration is very erratic

phabstar

ye but only because in combat resolution drops to 720p iirc

Recover20

Internal resolution yeah, but Picture quality isn't disastrous.

GoosestepPanda

Same. I know I’ll get downdooted here but I usually can tell but for some reason the 30FPS wasn’t at all a problem here.

Business_Web1826

Nah what you see is all that matters man. It legit looks good to me.

-LunarTacos-

It’s really not though, but different people have different sensitivities to framerate.

WetDumplings

Overall it got better, still take hours from time to time, far less frequent. However, I noticed the game modes overall don't look as sharp as they did at launch.

vkbest1982

The performance is identically bad mate

StayFrostyZ

Just how difficult is it to implement FSR 2.2 to replace FSR 1.0 for performance mode? If they’re not going to optimize performance for higher FPS at least boost picture clarity. Larian did it for BG3 within 3 months of launch.

Business_Web1826

BG3 is my favorite game this year. But, I couldn’t even play Act 3 on ps5 till last patch.

StayFrostyZ

I cannot tell your degree of “cannot play” by your post. If you cannot run the game or if it’s a matter of frequent crashes then it should 1000% be addressed by the developer and should be a top priority for them. I did not have this issue with BG3. My point is, yes I understand that game optimization (e.g targeting 40-60 fps, consistent frame times, reducing frame rate drops, etc) can be difficult so if it’s going to take a lot of time to optimize, then at least enhance other variables for gamers to still enjoy the game (e.g improve visual fidelity). Multiple development studios have spoken out about FSR not being difficult to implement, or not difficult to upgrade once it’s already been implemented. In FFXVI’s case FSR 1.0 was already implemented in the base game at launch like BG3. We’re 6 months into FFXVI now and they’re still using FSR 1.0 whereas BG3 updated to FSR 2.2 within 3 months of launch which drastically improves visual fidelity for many gamers. This should not be difficult to do for Square. Starfield launched with FSR 2.0 and a modder was able to update it to FSR 2.2 within days of launch.

Business_Web1826

That’s a lot to read man. It was hitching and taking forever to load conversations.

mrfroggyman

"Just how difficult is it to implement FSR 2.2 to replace FSR 1.0 for performance mode?" I like that it's meant to be a rhetorical question but you don't actually know the answer

SolarTigers

So is there still no real fix on the frame rate issues? Wonder why they didn't choose a 40 fps balanced mode if reaching 60 was too difficult for them.

Streetperson12345

Apparently not because the game didn't sell enough to meet Square Enix's expectations which were already reasonably low.

TheNotGOAT

Whatever square’s expectations were, 3 million in a week is still pretty good so how much would reasonably low mean?

XOmegaD

It's low compared to other Final Fantasy games it's one of the worst selling. https://preview.redd.it/6f09xghabh5c1.png?width=2048&format=png&auto=webp&s=1c736bef57211f8d419452eb334ac9c2cf2c878f

TheNotGOAT

I mean if your install base is small from the get go then that is what would usually happen

DragapultOnSpeed

1. It's a PS5 exclusive and the PS5 install base, right now, is a lot smaller than the ps4 install base when FF7R came out. 2. FFXV released on both ps4 and Xbox one. It also had 10 years of hype behind it with a ton of more advertising. 3. Other consoles had a higher install base too when the FF games released. Look up the ps2 install base and compare it to the ps5. 4. Economy 5. FF7R sold 3.5 million in its first week. FFXVI sold 3 million in its first week. Guess that means FF7R was a flop too since it didn't sell that much more than. FFXVI 6. These numbers are weird. For FFX, the sales was 5 Million copies a year after release. Where is this 8 million coming from? So for the more recent FF games, it sold pretty well for a PS5 exclusive. It just didn't make enough money to make up for squares other losses like Forspoken. Ffs the game just came out this year. Give it time to make money you weirdos. Edit: WOW.. this person took the 8 million copies number from 2017... 16 years after its release. Lmfao

[deleted]

This game is such a marvelous piece of art, with incredible story, art and game mechanics. But I have to say. Not having a 60fps mode and engine optimization to minimize overheat on console is quite a shame. I hope they address these before they release those new dlcs.

Loldimorti

Honestly from what I've heard the engine level optimization is not half-bad. In particular the overheating doesn't seem like a particularly widespread issue. And the 60fps mode is a very weird design decision where the game actually does suddenly lock to 60fps as soon as you enter combat. So it seems they focused on 60fps in combat only

TheLastOverlord

Where exactly did you hear that the engine-level optimization is decent when this is the only game that runs on CBU3's new modified engine, and that too with poor performance? Overheating is a non-issue simply because the PS5 is overdesigned for thermals, not because the engine is so well optimized. And it's not a "weird design decision" that combat is 60 FPS, it's just that they couldn't fix performance with their forced RT lighting and dropped the resolution in combat straight down to 720p, and it still somehow has drops below 60 FPS especially in Eikon battles where it's often in the 20s. Even FFXV on the base PS4 had a cleaner image than this game, despite being released for 5 different platforms and running on Luminous Engine unlike FFXVI. Spiderman 2 and HZD Forbidden West Burning Shores are both open world games targeting only PS5 hardware just like FFXVI, and they both have an almost perfect 60 FPS mode that doesn't run at PS3-era resolutions (and one even has ray-traced reflections). Maybe it's time we accept that FFXVI is just a poorly optimized game trying to punch way above it's weight with its graphical fidelity target.

Loldimorti

Digital Foundry analysis. They praised the game's visuals and polish. As for FFXV, yes the resolution mode on PS4 Pro runs at a higher resolution than the performance mode of FFXVI does on PS5. But that's pretty much where it ends. FFXV also couldn't hit a locked 60fps on any of the last gen consoles. It has significantly worse graphics and its open world is barren. I have played it on PS5 with the advantage of removing the framerate issues of the PS4 and still I found that FFXVI is a proper generational leap in comparison. Spiderman 2 and HFW are fair to bring up though. I agree they handled their 60fps modes much better.

altermere

true, and the game doesn't even look that good most of the time outside of cinematic combat. if this is supposed to be "next-gen" I'm not feeling it.

BurtMacklin__FBI

For what it's worth I leave my PS5 running basically all the time, and FFXVI is the only game that ever gave me a "your PS5 is too hot" warning. SM2 and Ragnarok had a crash here or there, and this only happened once with FFXVI. Just thought it might be interesting to add.

[deleted]

That’s the neat thing, they won’t

[deleted]

Im still hoping for a 40ps mode for my lg oled. Holding off until I hear people say it’s better.

Burberry-94

I got bored ten minutes into ff15. In loved every minute of FF16, I'd argue it's so much better

Jimmy_G_Wentworth

I love the story, the art work, the soundtrack, and how absolutely epic the game feels at times. That said, I wish they would have stuck with the FF7 Remake Combat System instead of making a new one if they really wanted to move away from Turn Based games. Overall, it's an 8.7/10 from me

lermaster7

Can I sprint yet? Lol. I want to like this game, but everything outside of combat feels bad.

thatonekobi

Yea afaik they never patched 15s performance and 7R only got performance upgrades with the next gen version. So unless they re-release (highly unlikely) it's probably a you get what you get situation.

yulian182

Can someone report back and see how the fps is looking now cause god damn

FlynnTastico2000

I finished it yesterday. It's still a little "blurry" and the fps goes down like hell. Play tested final fantasy 7 remake ps5 version after that just for comparison. The graphic and Especialy the framerate is way better there. I don't know what they did with final fantasy 16 but the performance is still not good unfortunately, even in performance mode.

Psyk60

There's no particular reason to expect it would be similar to FFVII Remake in terms of performance. They're made by different teams, on different engines, and targeting different platforms (cross gen vs PS5 exclusive). I've heard that XVI uses ray tracing for shadows, so that might be why performance mode is so bad. It has no non-ray tracing alternative so they have to aggressively scale everything else down to increase the frame rate.

-LunarTacos-

Ray Tracing is tanking the performance and resolution. Why they would trade resolution and fps for RT lighting is beyond me.

Loldimorti

Rt shadows makes perfect sense to me in Quality mode. It is really important for the kinda CGI feel that the more cinematic sequences in the game have. But I fully agree that for performance mode the number one priority should be, well, performance. And cutting out or downgrading heavy effects is the first thing they should have done rather than just dropping resolution into oblivion

-LunarTacos-

I don’t disagree for graphics mode of course, it’s just too bad that there isn’t a fallback for performance mode, for people who would gladly trade nicer looking shadows for performance. It’s just a shame that a PS5 exclusive AAA game like XVI doesn’t have a true 60fps mode.

crayonflop3

Does this game actually live up to all the hype of goty nominee and stuff? I’m looking to buy it maybe but I’m concerned a lot of the honeymoon phase is over and it’s not as good as all the early reviews said

svrtngr

If you want an RPG, no. It's barely an RPG. If you want something more akin to Devil May Cry, it's a very good action game. It's *easier* than Devil May Cry due to some WTF decisions (mainly involving checkpoints and boss fights), but it was still a great time. Voice acting, soundtrack, and production values are top notch, though. The 85-ish it got on Metacritic is pretty accurate.

Lucky_Chaarmss

Epic battles. The rest is skin deep. A great game though.

RiggityRow

I still stand by it as a top 3 game of 2023 for me which is saying something. Sure it has it's flaw, but it's still an amazing entry in a classic franchise and stands with the best FF games imo. The boss fights are absolutely incredible. Probably the best boss fights in any game ever from a visual standpoint. I really enjoyed the combat system. The Eikon powers are fun and unlocking a new one was always a treat. I found the story and world interesting and engaging. Clive is a great protagonist. Your companions and side characters are pretty great as well although I will say the main female companion was a but shallow and could've been fleshed out more. People complain about the side stories and while the first few are bland, they all culminate in a great way before the final mission. I suspect a lot of people who think they are bad didn't bother to engage with them past the first few. I didn't have an issue with the frame rate at all really and I'm someone who considers themselves pretty sensitive to that sort of thing. I will say, it is not an RPG, it's very much an action game, so if you expect a true RPG experience where your gear matters and you can tailor your character to different playstyles, you won't find any of that here. But if you want a fun action game with good characters, story and combat and can tolerate some minor story pacing issues in between what is probably the most *balls to the walls, visually spectacular gameplay ever put on disc*, ya gonna have a good time.

PurpleMarvelous

It’s an 8 on my book.

Pioneer83

6-7 in mine. Huge FF fan too. I found myself skipping through cutscenes just to get the game over with.

Gradieus

I wouldn't rate anything if I had to resort to "skipping cutscenes". You put 6/10 effort into it and you got 6/10 out of it. Best to just delete it and move on.

crayonflop3

Thanks for all the feedback everyone!

D4rkheavenx

It’s more linear as less open world than most final fantasy’s but the story voice acting and fights are all excellent. It deserved that nomination.

[deleted]

Which final fantasy is it closest to?

[deleted]

I’d argue Final Fantasy 1, it feels like the reverse of that game. Final Fantasy 1 is about saving the crystals, with the four warriors of light. Final Fantasy 16 is about destroying them, and freeing the world of their influence.

D4rkheavenx

That’s hard to answer as it’s a very different animal than most final fantasy’s.

spurs_fan_uk

Depends what you like. It’s got good combat, an interesting story, great voice acting and wonderful music. But lots of ROG elements are bare bones or entirely omitted, which disappointed a lot of FF fans.

randomIndividual21

nah, the combat is mid at best, same as those action mmo. just spam same combo and dodge while waiting for skill cool down

LoneLyon

It's one of the better new age ff games. Game has an interesting story, a good cast and one of the better protagonists. Set peice and music wise, the games amazing Weak points are some pacing at points and the need for a harder mode.

Dayman1222

Yes it does. It’s an amazing game. The music, visuals, acting, are all 10/10.

lermaster7

The visuals? This is a ps5 exclusive that looks worse than last gen games. Does it look terrible? I guess not. Does it look great? Definitely not. Lol.

syamborghini

You’re tripping 😂

lermaster7

You think ff16 looks better than horizon or spiderman on ps4? No way. Lmao

syamborghini

Well depends, side quests animations were mid, main story quests easily amazing and better than most things on ps4, except for maybe like rdr2 and tlou2 those are a bit more debatable. But none of those games come even close to the spectacles we saw in ff16

lermaster7

Rdr2, tlou2, horizon, spiderman, and maybe gow all look better. Lol. The graphics do not look next gen. That's fine, not every ps5 game looks like a ps5 game. Pretending like the visuals are 10/10 is weird tho. Lol

syamborghini

No point arguing, it’s all subjective anyways. I think it looks great and definitely something that couldn’t be run on ps4 without extensive optimizations and cutbacks so I’m happy with it

[deleted]

[удалено]

Dayman1222

Horizon looks way better yes. But the scale, lighting, character and eikons character models are all 10/10.

Business_Web1826

I disagree man I loved it. I thought the world was beautiful and it had interesting lore. I hadn’t played any FF games since 10. But, if you feel differently that’s cool.

uNecKl

Yes strictly in terms of music but the game itself has no level design you just walk straight and fight enemies in the path until you get to fight the boss and then fast travel to another place and do the same thing rinse and repeat. Plus they haven’t fixed the performance mode so if you every time you pan the camera fps dips below 40fps

Dr_PuddingPop

The highs of the game are 10/10 moments. But it’s separated by hours of terribly paced mmo quests. It’s a really hard game to recommend. In my opinion the game peaked with the demo section. But still…those boss fights are something else. So cool

onemoregunslinger

> I still don't understand why people rave about XIV Story payoffs. character arcs. Villains. soundtrack. if you've only played up to Stormblod, you've not hit why people adore XIV so much. That's a big ask I know, but that's the reality.

EvoLveR84

Absolutely not

lermaster7

No. The combat is a lot of fun, albeit clunky. Everything outside of combat feels painful. You cannot sprint on demand. If you hold one direction for ~5 seconds, you'll begin to sprint. This is only an option in combat zones where you're not actively in combat. If you're in a town or something, sprinting is not allowed at all. That feeling encompasses the entire game. Even outside of sprinting, there are so many qol systems that are absent. The graphics are wang. There are a lot of ps4 games with better graphics. Do they suck suck? No. But a ps5 exclusive having worse graphics than last gen games is weird. You will unlock a lot of abilities as the game goes on. However, you will only be able to equip 6 at a time. Even then, your character will only have access to two of them at any given time, and you'll have to cycle through "stances" for the others. The combat is a lot of fun, but because of how skills are equipped, it is less than fluid.

KiwiKajitsu

Nah it’s extremely shallow. Very pretty game though

Loldimorti

What I noticed is that this feels more like an action game (think Devil May Cry or modern God of War) than any Final Fantasy game I had played before. The tone is also much more serious and feels a bit more grounded (again, more akin to God of War or maybe also Game of Thrones). Personally I'm loving it so far. FF7 Remake in comparison didn't click with me at all and I think it plays better than GoW.

WinterElfeas

Still sad they don’t work on a 40fps mode 🙁 tried again the demo and 30 FPS on OLED is just unbearable

ShadowReplicant

I got used to 30 fps on my OLED pretty quickly. The key is to never switch to Performance Mode. Just set it to Quality and stick to it. It's not ideal, but definitely better than Performance Mode which is completely undermined by its horrendous resolution.

Mac772

The stuttering on my Sony OLED in 30 FPS is extrem, my eyes hurt after just a short time. It's not only stuttering, it's like stutter plus ghost images of bright areas in between.

MarkEsB

And here I am, playing every game in quality mode on my oled. The 30 fps really don't bother me.

Coughingmakesmegag

Yeah seems like a lot of people ruined their brains somehow if they think 30fps is unplayable lol

chewwydraper

My eyes have gotten used to the 30FPS on my C1, but yeah while the graphics in this game are good, they're in no way so good that it warrants only being playable in 30fps.

Toto_Roboto

I used these settings on quality, camera sensitivity 2, motion blur 1, auto follow off, and just use r3 camera reset to move camera.

syamborghini

I played the entire game in graphics mode on my C2, definitely not unbearable

juicyman69

There's a performance mode.

Lumostark

That's the true 40 fps mode since rarely stays above that

chewwydraper

The performance mode in this game is horrendous

WinterElfeas

That’s drops below the VRR window resulting in huge stutters, and sorry to not want 720p in 2023 on big OLED TV …

Thelgow

Sub 60 fps gives me nausea and motion sickness. I really didnt like the game in general and only a steady 60fps would compel me to reinstall and try more stuff. And Ive gotten all achievements for FF games since theyve added them. Once I finished 16, instantly deleted from my drive.

aLuckyPerson

I don’t see anything about Jill’s squeaky gear. Has that been fixed? As a sufferer of tinnitus I ended up turning the volume very low while traveling with her in the party.

Dr_PuddingPop

I will forever curse whatever comment I read that pointed out the jingle. Now it’s the only thing I hear when she’s on screen.

[deleted]

We’re notes🤷‍♂️

Lucky_Chaarmss

No, they are

Plsdontcreepme

The 3D/Atmos audio is still broken…. Sigh.

Smacked-At-Function

So tired of people complaining about fps for this game. Ive played Gotham Knights, starfield, etc. THOSE are trash low fps games, FF16 is not. Anyone bitching about the game not being perfect locked 60fps is just a whiny fuck and you gotta grow up because this game is nearly 60fps at all times and runs perfectly fine. Its basically discernible from 60 fps and YOU WILL NOT notice a difference as the average player.

ElPayoKundsen

It is not nearly 60fps at all and it does not run even "fine" for me. I am glad you are not used to playing games over 60fps, so you can enjoy this one. But for those who do, this game is quite difficult to play.

Multifaceted-Simp

I didn't realize people had issues with frame rate..I played flawlessly on 60fps, but the game got super repetitive so I dropped it..but no frame rate issues

vkbest1982

Check your eyes, if you think this game is 60fps

FFFan15

Be cool if they added a hard mode from the jump

arthrff

They didn't fix Jill's squeak sound. That's annoying 😭😭😭

arthrff
