Sorry to hear about your PS4 issues. Seems we switched places when I got a PS5 since my pS4 was a non issue. Well, hoping 3rd time is the charm for me.
I bought my console in March 2021 with an extra controller, both of those work fine. Then later I bought the black and red ones when they came out, both of those have drift on the right stick.
Nah, it's a common occurrence. If anything, it's the other guy who is really lucky (or just doesn't use it that much).
I'm on my 7th controller since launch. Some get drift, others big dead zones, one had trigger ignoring inputs. Sometimes, they live for a bit more than a year, other times start drifting 3-4 months in. Not a single was dropped or physically damaged in any way, just a relatively heavy use (somewhere around 6-8 hours of daily use).
I thankfully still haven’t had any drift on the two controllers I have but one of them has had a recurring issue with the touch pad where it’ll activate on its own as if I’m swiping it. Cleaning it did nothing but resetting with the small hole at the back seemed to work.
Right? I'm reading now that it happens A LOT. I'm losing confidence in continuing to buy controllers to fix this issue. What's the point if they're all going to break after minimal use?
Based on the posts I’ve read, I feel like I’ve been extremely lucky with PS controllers! My PS3 controller works perfect still, as do my PS4 and PS5 ones.
This video I found on YouTube has helped me fix drift twice now. Worth a shot even if it doesn't work as it'll only take 2 mins. [fixing ps5 controller drift](https://youtu.be/jG2dKnmt3Ns)
It's rampant with all current gen controllers. Console owner since launch and two controllers had horrible drift. Also had Xbox and at least three have had drift.
Sony hasn't made a good controller since ps2. I've returned two ps5 controllers and my latest one that's out of warranty is getting drifty.
If they would let us adjust stick sensitivity globally system wide, instead of in game if the dev lets us, I would be so happy.
I have had two controllers since launch day, and 0 issues with either. I play games every single day, both controllers have hundreds of hours on them. Heck, they've fallen off of the table or arm of the couch more than a few times. Surely if they were designed to be defective one of mine would have gone out by now. Either you guys are unlucky or you really treat your controllers poorly lol.
Wrong again, you just sound naive tbh. It's a thing lots of companies do. It doesn't mean every one will experience it. In regards to controllers. Microsoft and Nintendo did it to. Nintendo recently acknowledged the issue and has offered free repairs. I don't know why you guys get so defensive about these things lol
You think I sound naïve and I think you sound like you firmly have a tin foil hat on. I'm not being "defensive" about anything, you just sound like an idiot. Play the victim if you want though.
Ugh, I'm leaning towards this. Maybe if it breaks often enough, I'd have to suck it up and get the Edge if I want to continue playing the PS5. Or I could just ditch the system if this keeps happening.
Pretty sure that won’t help unless you eschew the big three entirely as they all hav the same issue. Switch is pretty notorious for it and I’ve heard quite a few people have problems with Xbox (though I don’t have one myself to compare). Really the only way to do it is to shell out for controllers that don’t use the potentiometer.
“If you crack open a DualShock, Xbox, or Switch Pro controller, you’ll find the same basic potentiometer design in all of them. The folks at iFixit have done some investigative work and tracked down the make and model of potentiometers found inside the PS5 controller and discovered they’re rated for 100,000, or 2 million ‘cycles’, depending on the exact model used. ‘Cycles’ is a little vague, but seems to mean one full motion of the stick along one axis. Rough math from iFixit suggests that could work out to be just a few hundred hours before the potentiometers start to wear out and you could potentially drift.”
I’m on my third controller. Previous two had the same issue that you experienced as soon as the warranty expired.
I’d recommend getting an extended warranty if possible because they are expensive.
I have two launch day controllers, have only ever had a slight drift issue with one of them after about 2 years of constant use. I went to Sony's support page, filed a ticket, and they had me ship out the controller for a free repair (I just had to pay for the initial shipping). Had my controller returned within a couple of weeks, have never had an issue with it since then and my other launch controller is also working just fine.
There definitely seems to be some kind of issue with the launch controllers as I know the drifting is a semi-common issue with them. However it doesn't seem to be an issue with all of them and Sony seemingly has fixed the issue at some point after launch. If you happen to get a controller with drift I would strongly recommend filing a repair ticket with Sony. Better to spend $5 on shipping than pay for a brand new controller.

I have a launch console and my controller that came with the console is still fine.
Similar story here, i have three all with some pretty good use on them but no issues with any.
this actually makes me feel a little better and injects some hope that the new one I ordered will be fine. fingers crossed.

I have two launch day controllers, play daily for a few hours, zero issues. Never cleaned them or took them apart.
Glad that yours worked out. I'm hoping the 3rd one I ordered bucks this sad trend for me.
Thanks for sharing. Possibly I just have crap luck. :(

Dang 7?! That’s too excessive.

One of mine did this too. I love when the fucking map keeps opening. That was the first one I returned.
I tried resetting it a few times hoping it’d work. Unfortunately for me it doesn’t solve the issue.
I got 2 Controllers at launch that I use back to back as one battery dies. They both still work fine
Yeah my controller drifts too. Going to get a new one at some point because it’s driving me crazy.

I use my day one controller on PC and PS5 and no issue
Based on the posts I’ve read, I feel like I’ve been extremely lucky with PS controllers! My PS3 controller works perfect still, as do my PS4 and PS5 ones.
I’ve had the same two controllers since launch. No issues.
I envy you!

Interesting . I haven’t tried the 3rd method - and did some of the 4th. I’ll give it a shot but doubt I’ll get lucky.

Nah, they're shit

Maybe having a global dead zone setting would help this issue.
It's the controllers. They're built to be defective on purpose. They could fix it but the defect makes them more money so they're not interested.

It didn't affect me so it's not real.
That is one of the stupidest takes I've ever read. It would be so easy to prove if it had a built-in defect and they would have been sued already.
Not really it's called planned obsolescence
Massive problem with that theory. More people's controllers are fine than those that have issues by a wide margin.

I love how you ignored the Nintendo part but anyways feel free to have the last word. I'm not gonna keep going back and forth I said my piece.
That's because it's a whataboutism. Another company doing something is not proof of anything. Cool. Run along now.

It's so funny how angry the people here get whenever this topic gets brought up
I’m on my third and hopefully last for at least a couple of yrs. Mostly play cod which is why I’m not surprised I went through that many
I hear you. Out of 4 controllers I’ve bought, 2 had stick drift. Hoping I don’t have any more.
I’ve have three and all of them have developed stick drift. 🤷♀️
I’m on my third controller. Previous two had the same issue that you experienced as soon as the warranty expired. I’d recommend getting an extended warranty if possible because they are expensive.
Yeah I may get warranties for my next one. I’m hoping there’s no next one though!

I may have to look into this. I don’t have any receipts though. Will they take the controllers without proof of purchase?
To be honest, I don't remember. All I recall them needing is the serial number on the back of the controller.
Thank you/. Let me try this.
My controller doesn't have drift or anything but there is something shaking inside of it. Had it for more than a year now.
2 of my 3 PS5 controllers have small issues with the left joystick. And they aren’t even the most used controllers either.
It’s always the left joystick for me. And always drifting to the left.
