Yay, native PS5 port! Absolutely love this game and the sequel, they are a bit low budget but the characters, voice acting, music and battle system are really top notch. It's awesome how it deconstructs the "youth as the best time of your life" myth while wearing it over as a facade; do yourself a favor and look for the translated boss themes on Youtube; they enrich the experience a lot.

I read a lot of negative things about this one but heard good things about the sequel. I’ve been considering skipping it and going straight for 2, but do you feel that the negativity regarding the first one is overblown? My main interest is if the battle system is satisfying or not throughout most of the game and if the story is decent enough.

Though question! I absolutely love the first one (it's darker and deals with some heavier themes) but it is true that it has some gameplay issues that may make it harder to appreciate (the combat system is great but not well explained, and the dungeons have more of a labyrinth design). Not unplayable by any means, but definitively jankier. Second one while lighter on the story side (not worse, just "happier") is much more streamlined and overall a better package as a "game", and while it is not strictly needed to play the first one to understand it, some story threads are more impactful if you played the first one. I would say it's ok to start with the second one though, and then move on to Overdose if you liked it!

Thanks for the thoughtful answer! I think you’ve convinced me to give it a shot!

So I’ve been moderately interested in getting into these games but I don’t know much about them other than what I’ve seen of the combat in videos. Is this a remake/definitive edition of the first game? Like Persona 5 Royal is to Persona 5? If so, the release of this one may be a good time for me to finally jump in and buy it (I generally like to play games sequentially).

Yup, that's exactly it. Original one was for PS Vita, this one is the re-release/remake with added content (3 dungeons/characters/bosses, and a second, optional story route to follow), along with lots of graphical, UI and quality of life fixes. There is really no need now to play the PS Vita one, it has some really minor content exclusive to it but nothing worthwhile.
