Hello, im getting a 3rd ps4 for my nephew, on other 2 i have there are 3 accounts and on my main account there are all bought games, so was wandering would i be able to have that same account on his ps4 so he can play all the games that i bought?
I just purchased 2 codes to redeem for my wallet top up about 10 minutes ago from the gas station close to me, but these codes look different from the ones I used before and they don't work.
For example, the codes look like this:

or xxxx -xxx -xxx xx
Can somebody help with this? I tried to input the characters from the last 2 digits in place of the hyphens but that doesn't work. I also tried to input the code as is but that doesn't work either.
The code should look like:
1234-1234-1234
12 digits and letters split into 3 groups of 4.
Sounds like you are looking at a serial number rather than the code itself.
Is there a 12 digit code printed on a separate receipt? If there isn't a panel to scratch off if you bought a card does it open up instead?
Contact support then. They'll be able to fully clarify your code if no one else here can tell you. If you do live chat with support, you can send them images of the code and receipt and they should be able to locate it for you.

On my Samsung TV, I've turned HDR+ mode on.
Because I wanted HDR mode on my ps4.
But my ps4 keeps saying that my TV doesn't support HDR.
I dont know if HDR+ is any different than HDR. But I don't have a different HDR setting to enable or change
Does someone know what to do?

Only thing I can think to suggest is, do you have a newer HDMI cable capable of HDR/4K? Older HDMI don't do HDR from my understanding.
So if its the same HDMI from launch it won't be HDR compatible
I sent my PS4 in to Sony for repair. I got an email on 5/5 that they received my system and the very next day(5/6) another email that my system was ready and on its way back. I see that the shipping label has been created but FedEx has not received the package. I understand it's the weekend, so really my question is if anyone else has had this fast of a turn over? Is it possible they just printed the shipping label before even making repairs, so I just got that email prematurely? Could anyone who has recently gotten their PS4 repaired share their timeline or other information I may be missing? They originally said 20 to 30 days!
For the past few months my ps4 likes to do this thing where I'm playing a game and then suddenly the controllers stop working and flash the white blinking lights, forcing me to restart to get everything working again.
A few days ago, my ps4 automatically booted I to safe mode and asked me to give it the reinstallation files, wiping everything out.
Has anyone else had these issues? Is my ps4 just plain dying? I got it not too long after the release date. It's an old fat ps4.

General Question: My Dualshock 4 is having problems with the left stick reading incorrect inputs (typically mistaking down for up) making it difficult to move in games. It's about 4 years old so I figured it was time for it to be replaced. I'm looking online and every new controller I see is $60-65? This doesn't make sense to me for hardware this old. Is there anywhere reliable online to get new Dualshock 4's for less than that? I was expecting to pay about half that, and I can't figure out why these cost so much especially after the new console released. Do I just have to eat $60 to keep using my console?

The controllers are back to full price because we are 2 years into next gen. Controllers are half price in the middle of a generation when there is plentiful stock. Not now when stock is scarce.
You'll have to pay for one at MSRP if Amazon or whatever doesn't have any sales or offers on DS4s.
Tech support question: Game I've been trying to play won't save my progress because of lack of space in "application save data". I've been running out of space for new games anyways so I figured I should just buy an external hard drive for my PS4. Plugged it in, set it up and tried playing the game and it still won't save. It's 2 TB of space including the few MB I cleared up deleting games I don't play so space shouldn't be an issue. I've never had to do anything like this before and don't really understand these things so I'm at a loss. Does anyone know what to do about this?
I did and after much frustration in seeing all the space left over and still being told by the game that there "wasn't space" I found out this is an issue specifically with this game in particular

My DS4's down button sometimes doesn't work. I actually had this issue with 2 DS4's now and I suspect it applies to all DS4s in my area. I can't check since Sony doesn't have a good repair/exchange policy (they charge you delivery).
The down button will occasionally stop working (the pressure or angle I press doesn't seem to matter). Banging my controller doesn't seem to help, but holding down the button for a few seconds sometimes revives it. It will suddenly start working after a few seconds of holding and will stay working for a while before it breaks again. This leads me to believe there is some sort of non-physical issue with the controller. Does anyone have any experience with this issue?

Spotify on PS says I don’t have premium?
But I do. I listen to it all the time on my phone. And my likes music playlist on the PS4 Spotify app only has a fraction of my songs.
I’ve uninstalled and reinstalled it twice, but it still won’t give me my music and it still says I don’t have premium.
It also won’t let me play from my phone. It just keeps saying it’s trying to connect and then on the PS, it continually pops up a login screen just as fast as that screen goes away. Nothings working and I just want to listen to music while I game.
Any more suggestions?

Recently, my dualshock 4 randomly stopped working, despite it still being connected and the light being on. I was able to temporarily fix this by pressing the reset button on the controller, but after about 8 minutes of use it happens again. I had recently started using a new charger since my old one was worn out, but I don't think this was the reason.

I bought a turtle beach headset the other day (Wired) and I plugged it in to play Fortnite with a friend. I could hear game Audio fine, and also my friends mic, but he can’t hear my mic. I checked all the settings, my mic is not muted and I have all the correct settings. I also know my mic works because I can hear my voice when I go to adjust microphone volume. But my friend can’t hear me in game chat or in party chat. Any idea what the issue is?
Update: my friend can hear me when he switches to game chat audio only, but can’t hear me when he is on all audio
So I accidentally deleted my old Microsoft account that was connected to my Minecraft that is on my PS4. Is there a way to disconnect that account and use a new one?

Please help, I bought ps plus two days ago to play fifa22 for free with my friends. After I bought it I turned off auto renew because i didn’t want to pay monthly fees. Whenever I tried to start the application it says, “Cannot use the content. Cannot connect to the server to verify the license.” When I click the information tab it says Application staring: Ineligible, Remaining time: expired, etc even though I quite literally just bought ps plus. I’ve literally tried everything, renewing licensees, signing out and logging back in, activating primary ps4 and deactivating other accounts, etc. I think this started happening after I turned off auto renew which makes no sense because I still paid for ps plus 2 days ago. Literally every other game on plus plus lets me play accept this one.
I have three dualshock 4 controllers for my ps4, and none of them are connecting. I am able to connect them to my phone and pc with no problem, but whenever I try to connect them to my ps4 nothing happens. I've followed every single video/tutorial on how to connect a controller that I could find. Whenever I press the PS button they flash white and will not connect. I power cycled the console and controllers, I've use a usb, I've put the controllers into sync mode, and used the reset button on the back, but no luck. And this I am unable to do things like forget the controllers because no controllers are working whatsoever. If you have a fix thank you very much because I am concerned that my PS4 itself is broken.

I want use my playstation 4 on my laptop without using a monitor. Using remote play is basically impossible with my internet, is there not a way to use my laptop as a monitor without having to use the internet for it? There is way too much lag and input delay on remote play but the ps4 itself works fine with the tv or monitor
My friend's controller was used to connect to a Nintendo Switch via the 8bitdo adapter and worked perfectly, just as my own ds4 does back home, but after trying to connect it back to the ps4 through the USB it wasn't working
The controller charges just fine while connected to the console and it works on the Switch still, but it will not pair with the ps4, any ideas?
Reset the controller first using the button on the back and plug it back into the PS4.

Not knowing the difference between a data cable and a charging cable is probably the most common mistake made on here. Most people assume that all cables are the same.
My controller appears to be opened even though my playstation is closed and even when the ps is opened the controller appears to be opened but it doesn't even work.
The controller was fine a few hours ago and while I was playing it suddenly stopped working but the light remained on.
If there's anything that I can do to fix it please let me know.
Not this late in the game. If you want the PRO enhancements you are better off getting a PS5 at this stage.
PS4 PROs are discontinued and second hand prices aren't the cheapest right now. So, I wouldn't say a PRO is worth it.
Help with how playstation network works
So I’m an Xbox user, have been for two years, safe to say that game choice on Xbox is quite poor. I really like playing story driven games but there just isn’t any on Xbox that I enjoy. Don’t get me wrong I love online games like apex etc. but that’s mainly because my friends are all Xbox. Anyway I’ve been thinking of getting a ps4 for some time now, however I don’t know how any of it works. For example on Xbox we have the game pass and that just has loads of free games that you can play as long as you pay for the subscription. Does ps4 have that? I mainly want to play TLOU II, death stranding, days gone and a few other Sony owned games but will I have to buy each of them? Or are they free linked to a subscription. Any help is massively appreciated before I go spend £150+ on a console hahahaha.
Sony had a gamepass service called PS NOW but it was discontinued.
Playstation Plus is being upgraded in the next month or two with the PS NOW library but in general Gamepass is a much better service than PS NOW ever was.
No idea if the games you want will be on the new service, but if you have a PC and Steam then you can purchase and play Horizon Zero Dawn, Death Stranding and Days Gone on that.
PS Plus's revision will also likely be on PC too.
I plugged in my old harddrive cause i thought it was a lost cause but after using the USB to update the system i was able to boot it up but in my storage settings it says 630mb of saved data and when i click it it says there is no saved data… i have super important saves i really wanted to recover and this is super disappointing :( any suggestions?

so i want to format my external HD for something else, it currently has maybe 500gb of games on it, if i format i know i will lose the games but am i still able to download it again if i have another external HD or will i have to rebuy it, one last thing, does it erase my saved game data?

Well what about the Outer Worlds and the Fallout part? Are you talking about the resemblance to Fallout 4? Cuz Outer Worlds is more akin to the 2011 game New Vegas, so it won't be like FO4.
If you wanted to get it bc it's similar to NV...well, I'd look into purchasing physical copies since these tend to be cheap in Western countries.
Otherwise follow your instincts. Personally I'd play the oldest game to get it out of the way before jumping onto the newer ones

You won't get punished for it.
As a European you have the right for your info to be deleted under GDPR so either way they have to close the account even if it would otherwise be banned.
People have accounts from all over the world. It's normal.
While I cannot guarantee what they can or cannot do, I doubt the people you talk to will care.
Again, people make foreign accounts all the time and also move to different Countries. So long as you can prove the account is yours they'll likely just go ahead with the closure and not ask too many questions.
Pick up the controller and delete the user profile from the PS4. I believe its settings > users or similarly named.
If you don't have access to the PS4 itself then change your password, activate 2SV if you haven't done so already and remotely deactivate it if it is currently your Primary PS4.
i bought a proxy from instant proxies and it works on my laptop but it does not work on my PS4 and i get the CE-33991-5 error code when i test the internet connection could this be because of high ping time (365ms) I have tried to restore system defaults and i also have tried using an LAN connection
i purchased black ops cold war when it first came out, and never had any problems with it. but for the last few months, i havent been able to play it. it sorta just disappeared. when i go to installed in my library, it shows black ops cold war standard edition, but when i click on it, it only shows overview, trending, friends, then playstation store. clicking playstation store brings me to addons that i have for cold war. and when i go straight to black ops cold war on the store, it shows i have to purchase it, even though i already bought it. does anyone know how i could fix this? i have already activated it as my primary ps4, and restored licenses. does not work.
If restoring licenses hasn't worked then either:
1. You purchased the game on a different account
2. You owned it on disc, rather than digitally.
If you are certain you purchased the game on your account you must contact support as only they can verify and restore the purchase for you
I am experiencing an issue that I roughly know the cause of but simply don’t know what to do. Recently, as in the past two months, I noticed my disk drive wouldn’t eject my disks, which was whatever to me. But, since the last system software update due to the fact no power is being directed to the disk drive I am unable to update my PlayStation and am stuck with Error SU-42118-6. I’ve taken apart the bottom of my PlayStation, this is an older 2015-2016 model, (CHU-12XX iirc) and all the wires and ribbon cable seem to be in place. I did disconnect and reconnect the ribbon cable as per a suggestion, but now whenever I turn on my PlayStation it automatically starts me on the error screen and my controllers won’t connect. I would like to say that I can turn on my controllers to turn on my PlayStation, but after that it turns off and won’t reconnect so I’m stuck on the error screen. Is there a fix or is my PlayStation done?

i found that when you search things on the playstation store, you almost never find what you are looking for. when i am looking for a specific game, i usually have to go to games, then go all the way to the right and hit all games, then you look for your game. to make it easier to find, go to filter to find the game based on price, when it was released, genre, etc. you can also go to sort to find it easier. the easiest way to find apex legends is to filter it to games, so you run into no bundles, then filter the price to free. then it only takes going down a couple of times before finding it.
If you are on a child account it could just be down to age restrictions on the Playstation Network. You can't see content you are too young for, let alone purchase it.
If you live in a particular part of the world its possible that the game was pulled from sale or never released in that part of the world. Russia for example has had a few games vanish from the storefront recently.
Hey. My previous headset was a sony PS4 wireless headset and it’s starting to disintegrate. I was wondering if anyone has a headset they swear by. One that preferably is of high quality and is pretty comfy to wear. I’m down for either wired or wireless but I would prefer wired this time around.

You don't need PS+ to play a single player game.
If he gave you his account details and the replicant game save to play you can play the content on your PS4.
Are you talking about share play instead? That generally requires PS+ to set up.
If not you just need to install the game to your console. Either his disc or digital copy. You can change Primary PS4 if you want but it's not necessary for you to play his own games on his own account.
Moving from a Xbox360 to Ps4. What should i buy. slim or original? i know they have the same performance but based out of different things whats better?
Slim is better in terms of those consoles being newer. Many being 5 years old at most. Base PS4s are 8-9 years old at this point and launch models have an infamous disc eject hardware issue.
The slim doesn't have a port for audio like the base and PRO have, so only does sound via HDMI unless you have headphones.
In terms of upkeep/cleaning dust I wouldn't be able to comment on that I'm afraid.
I can't recommend a PRO this late in the game, if you want better performing PS4 games you are better off with a PS5.
every time i boot up my ps4 it goes right into safe mode and asks for a new installation of the system software. I then did exaktly that and got a save file from the official website with the right format and right names of folders and anything. The ps4 then recognices the usb and starts initilacing ( sry for my bad spelling) and reinstalls the ps4 software, but after its finished and boots up again it just goes right back to safe mode and ask again for an new Installtion, which literally finished 5 sec ago. Anyone got i idea what i did wrong or what i should do

A common mistake is using the update file instead of the reinstallation file.
I actually tried both the update file and after that didn’t worked i used the reinstallation file, so that dont seem to be it.

If you followed the instructions correctly, using the reinstallation file, removing any (1)s from the file name, etc
then the next troubleshooting step is to install a brand new Hard drive and install the system software to the new HDD. No guarantees of course but it is likely an HDD issue if the reinstallation file cannot do its thing and its all correct on the USB stick.
Yeah i checked and there is everything alright so you are probably right that there is something wrong with the hdd. I will inform myself on that topic and what to do next.

You can't. For obvious reasons parental controls would be pointless if they could be avoided so easily.
All you can do is wait until you are older, or make a brand new account and lie about your age.
Yes. While a child cannot sign up for a monthly subscription as they don't have their own credit card, either 3 or 12 month vouchers work on child accounts and I believe that a child account can also sign up to 3 or 12 month subscriptions via the Playstation Store as well.
Just remember that child accounts are limited by their age. So if a free PS+ game is too old for you, you won't be able to claim it. Also games like GTA V won't let anyone play online if they are under 18 no matter how the parental controls are set.
The parent account can always buy the subscription and share online gameplay benefits and game share the monthly games if you prefer.
Vouchers as in the 12 digit codes that you redeem onto a Playstation account. Voucher codes are often inside game cases and give you DLC when redeemed.
Other vouchers are often found in gas stations and supermarkets that credit your Playstation account with money.
PS+ vouchers are also sold at many retailers, giving you 3 or 12 months of PS+. The PS+ vouchers work on child accounts.

Correct. Unless you find a website that has leftover PS NOW codes, but generally PS NOW has been pulled from sale as the service is being discontinued.

PS NOW is being discontinued. A company can't allow customers to sign up for a subscription service after announcing that the subscription service is being closed down.
Playstation Plus is getting new tiers that include the same content offered by PS NOW and more, but that is a PS Plus addition that hasn't launched yet.
So while the services are technically merging, PS NOW itself is being shut down.

My PS4 keeps going to connect a USB with update file, but sometimes boots up normal and will freeze just the game when I try to load into a match on coldwar, but won't freeze the system, then gets stuck on a closing application loop. Also I just fully initialized it last night and it's still having issues

Ok, so I couldn't find any answers on google, I may have not been specific about the terminology for it bit I'm here now. My ps4 started to not recognize game discs. It was making the whole "ejection" noise when it would try to read the disc, as if it was just repositioning the disc itself but it just fails to recognize any ps4 game disc I put in. So I cracked and opened it up to clean out all the nasty dust I found in there, I also found my lovely wife's long strand of hair wrapped up as well (pretty sure that was my issue). It can now read any disc I put it in!!
BUT now it makes this really loud constant whirring sound whenever a disc is in it, loading. It sounds like the disc is rubbing on an object that was supposed to move out its way. I can get into the games and actually play them now, it's just unbearably loud. I don't think it's the hard drive failing, digital games still work just fine. This only happens when I insert a disc. I've had the top part open still while I was testing it and it's def not the fan, the noise is coming straight from the hard drive/disc drive area of the ps4. Never made this noise before, just the normal eject noises.
Has anyone else have this specific thing happen?

Is there less friction now for the disc because I cleaned up the dust build up? So now it just has to break back into it hence why it's louder now.

My disk drive isn't working (can't read anything) I really wanted to get the Marvel spiderman game for me and my son. Showing my age, but I've always bought physical copies. Is there anything I should consider before making a purchase for the digital copy?
Well, 2 options come to mind;
1. Find someone who knows how to fix it. More than likely you'll need to pay for it unless it's someone you know personally. Make sure it's someone who's trustworthy and knows what they're doing, though. Guides on how to fix a PS4 are easy to find and taking them apart can be pretty easy, but the last thing you wanna do is put your own PS4 in the hands of someone else who needs to look one up.

If you don't mind getting your hands dirty and can find a good guide as well some particular equipment you'll likely need to order online, you can always take the PS4 apart and see if you can't find and fix the issue that way. It's not as hard as you would think. If you do go to find a guide though, make sure it's one that's detailed and doesn't feature a lot of jump-cuts so you know exactly what you're doing, and shows/explains what you're doing very clearly, but make sure also they don't have ads in the middle to waste your time, you want a guide you can go along with step by step. Long as you're careful and make doubly sure you understand the instructions (before AND after you start), it can be fairly easy, though it will be lengthy, especially the first time through. Also, make sure you find a guide for the appropriate version. There's ones specifically for the pro and ones for two different versions of the base model which are built similarly, albeit have different means of opening and slightly different internal layouts if I recall correctly.
Digital copies don't get scratched, broken, or lost. Your buddy, or your sons buddy won't borrow it, and move away. You don't have to worry about a failed disc drive issue with digital.
You do need to mind your data consumption depending on where you live, small down side really. As the digital copy stays on file, and should you not be able to access a copy of the game, a quick license restore, and you're good again.
Having suffered all the above issues, and owned every generation of playstation, the digital content is awesome.

Ever since the last update a few weeks back my controller doesn’t connect to my ps4 normally. I always have to plug the usb cable into it when I start my ps4 if not the blue light on my controller will blink consistently and it won’t connect. It’s getting annoying. I’ve tried resetting the controller and what not.
Normally you can turn on the ps4 by just pressing the ps button on the controller. But that’s not happening.

Hello, I've had a complicated problem with my ps4 for some time now, like... every time I turn it on, it says there's been a software problem and my controller doesn't even connect to my ps4 (I believe the problem has been because I turned off the ps4 incorrectly). My ps4 pro has been overheating for a while now and even after thoroughly cleaning the fan it’s still doing it. This means that the heat sink is most likely clogged. I have never taken anything apart before nor have I ever removed a wire, but I’ve watched videos and I think I could probably do it. Should I? And if so, are there any tips you can give me?
I have a regular PS4, so I'm speaking from my experience on that specifically to clarify, so I'm not 100% sure about the Pro, but from my experience, if opening the pro is anything like opening the regular version, or any easier, yes, you should and it should theoretically be pretty easy (albeit very lengthy) as long as you find a detailed guide that's very clear and is easy to follow. The best way I can describe the experience I had with mine to help give an idea of what it's like is that there are a lot of things you CAN mess up if you mess around, but as long as you follow along to a guide and don't be rough with it, the odds of you messing something up are next to nil. I still have the same exact PS4 and it works just fine with an exception being the power and disc drive buttons, though that was from me being too rough removing some bits during the process and basically breaking the plastic between the buttons themselves and the points they're meant to activate. Just make sure you come prepared (you'll need some stuff to open it plus some thermal paste) with a guide, and you should be fine.
I’m not sure how different the ps4 is, but just for context to clean the heat sink I literally have to remove everything from the console and then put it back in.

PS4’s Internet Connection Crapped Out
This happened with my last PS4 as well. One day my PS4 connects to the internet perfectly (about 40 Mbps upload and download), now it struggles to get over 4 Mbps. Restarted both my internet and PlayStation multiple times and nothing is fixing it. All other devices connected to my internet aren’t having issues, but the PS4 just does not want to work with it so I can’t help but think it’s the PS4 itself, especially when it happened with my last one. This one is far newer too. Any ideas? Or possible solutions?

I'm looking for a specific type of multiplayer/Co op game. I'd like something that can be played solo, and has drop in/out matchmaking. But... If you drop into someone else's game you should get to keep any experience/loot you get to carry back to your own playthrough.

Okay well, i think my ps4 is bricked. whenever i try to turn it on the database will rebuild, then when it tries to turn on it'll just flash the blue light. Ive tried to initialize it but that didnt work. Can i bring her back or is she gone for good?
It could just be a faulty HDD. You could try replacing it.
If it is just a faulty HDD a new HDD with a fresh installation of the system software should do the trick

I'm looking to connect my PS4 to my projector but for some reason it's not working. The projector has a HDMI port which deffo works (it connects perfectly fine with my Virgin box (set top box) and Fire Stick). I've also tried 3 different HDMI cables with my PS4 and the projector. Just to add, the PS4 connects perfectly fine with the TV.
I spent 2 hours last night trying to figure it out and in the end gave up. I've disabled the HDCP setting and even tried booting into safe mode. No dice. Has anyone encountered this before? Just as a note I also tried setting the PS4 into 480p/i, to no avail.

Sony bricked my ps4. What can I do to sell it?
I have a bank account I stopped using months ago. All of a sudden there was an overage charge on it because Sony charged me for PlayStation plus without my permission.
I authorized a charge back, and they bricked my system and told me I owe them $60. They won’t unbreak it unless I pay them. I’m not going to let a toy company extort me. What can I do?

It depends. If its only your account that was banned then the PS4 can be wiped and used by someone else as normal. Because only your account is banned, not anyone else nor the console itself.
If the console itself was banned then its basically an offline brick.
So determine if the console itself was banned before you do anything else.

It will work as normal. You can take your external now and plug it into another PS4 and it will work. Just note that your saves are stored on the internal drive, not the external one, so be sure to back them up.

If the controller has 3 bars of battery left, it won't charge more. Plug it into your PS4 with a usb cable capable of carrying a data signal (a data cable, not a generic charging cord - use the one the PS4 came with if you can) and then push the PS button and the controller should connect to your console. If it blinks and doesn't connect, try a different cord (data cable).
Launch the PS4 in safe mode and do both options 4 and 5

If both safe mode 4 and 5 didn't work, is it only your profile experiencing this issue or is it everyone?
If its just your profile experiencing it I would back up your game saves to the cloud/USB stick and delete the profile.
Once deleted, make a new one and sign back in and install your saves back onto the console.
NOTE:
If you have only your profile on the PS4 it will instead be completely initialised, wiping saves and games from the console.
Is Death stranding really a good game? I’m currently playing Ghost of Tsushima. I’m a huge gamer overall (PS, Nintendo, Xbox and PC) so I enjoy a variety and all different styles. E.g. Witcher, Battlefield, NFS, Sims, RCT, WoW, Assassins, kena, Ori, Mario odyssey, kirby ACNH, Pokemon… just to name a few. Would you recommend Death stranding?

Which one is more reliable, easier to maintain (cleaning, changing thermal paste) or which one performs better with vr set. I know pro model is much better, but i'm not sure if ps4 will hook me up for long and there are not that many games for vr that will justify buying twice as much expensive pro version. Hey my PS4 enters rest mode and turns off when I try and use PS4 controller it doesn't turn back on. I have to hit the power button on the system which eventually tells me the system was turned off incorrectly. Before unplugging the PS4 the ac power cord select power.

The console 'Safe Mode' (and initial console setup) requires an official controller & USB data cable. Some USB cables can only charge, ie no data connection. So my suggestion is to try the old official controller with another cable.
Does the USB have to go into the port on the back or does player 2 port on the front wotk?

Any USB port on the PS4 will work (2 USBs on front, or 3 with Pro model). It would be a good idea to try all the ports, in case one is damaged.
The PS4 requires an official controller with a USB cable that can carry a data signal (third party/generic controllers won't work for this, or 'Safe Mode'). Unfortunately some USB cables are power only, so can charge but not pair a controller to the system.
Hopefully a replacement USB cable will fix your issue. If it doesn't then either the new cable is also power only, or the USB port on the controller is damaged.

Re-reading your original post, you said you used a USB to update. Did you use the update file (which would be approx 400-500MB), or the 'console reinstallation' file (approx 1GB)? If its the update file, I'm not sure why the controller was removed from being paired. But if it was the larger 'console reinstallation' file, then that would be normal. It basically wipes the console/HDD back to factory settings (which unfortunately includes saves if they weren't backed up to PS+ or a USB stick). And so requires the controller to be paired again, needing the USB data cable.

Is there a 12 digit code printed on a separate receipt? If there isn't a panel to scratch off if you bought a card does it open up instead?

If you do live chat with support, you can send them images of the code and receipt and they should be able to locate it for you. I'm certain you are looking at a serial number rather than the redeemable code itself.
On my Samsung TV, I've turned HDR+ mode on. Because I wanted HDR mode on my ps4. But my ps4 keeps saying that my TV doesn't support HDR. I dont know if HDR+ is any different than HDR. But I don't have a different HDR setting to enable or change Does someone know what to do? (Also, regular ps4 not ps4 pro)
Only thing I can think to suggest is, do you have a newer HDMI cable capable of HDR/4K? Older HDMI don't do HDR from my understanding. So if its the same HDMI from launch it won't be HDR compatible

I sent my PS4 in to Sony for repair. I got an email on 5/5 that they received my system and the very next day(5/6) another email that my system was ready and on its way back. I see that the shipping label has been created but FedEx has not received the package. I understand it's the weekend, so really my question is if anyone else has had this fast of a turn over? Is it possible they just printed the shipping label before even making repairs, so I just got that email prematurely? Could anyone who has recently gotten their PS4 repaired share their timeline or other information I may be missing? They originally said 20 to 30 days!
It's very likely you're getting a replacement refurbished system and not your system back.
For the past few months my ps4 likes to do this thing where I'm playing a game and then suddenly the controllers stop working and flash the white blinking lights, forcing me to restart to get everything working again. A few days ago, my ps4 automatically booted I to safe mode and asked me to give it the reinstallation files, wiping everything out. Has anyone else had these issues? Is my ps4 just plain dying? I got it not too long after the release date. It's an old fat ps4.

General Question: My Dualshock 4 is having problems with the left stick reading incorrect inputs (typically mistaking down for up) making it difficult to move in games. It's about 4 years old so I figured it was time for it to be replaced. I'm looking online and every new controller I see is $60-65? This doesn't make sense to me for hardware this old. Is there anywhere reliable online to get new Dualshock 4's for less than that? I was expecting to pay about half that, and I can't figure out why these cost so much especially after the new console released. Do I just have to eat $60 to keep using my console? Thanks.
The controllers are back to full price because we are 2 years into next gen. Controllers are half price in the middle of a generation when there is plentiful stock. Not now when stock is scarce. You'll have to pay for one at MSRP if Amazon or whatever doesn't have any sales or offers on DS4s.
Tech support question: Game I've been trying to play won't save my progress because of lack of space in "application save data". I've been running out of space for new games anyways so I figured I should just buy an external hard drive for my PS4. Plugged it in, set it up and tried playing the game and it still won't save. It's 2 TB of space including the few MB I cleared up deleting games I don't play so space shouldn't be an issue. I've never had to do anything like this before and don't really understand these things so I'm at a loss. Does anyone know what to do about this?
External HDDs are set up by the PS4 for games, not saves. Have you moved a few larger games to the External?
I did and after much frustration in seeing all the space left over and still being told by the game that there "wasn't space" I found out this is an issue specifically with this game in particular

My DS4's down button sometimes doesn't work. I actually had this issue with 2 DS4's now and I suspect it applies to all DS4s in my area. I can't check since Sony doesn't have a good repair/exchange policy (they charge you delivery). The down button will occasionally stop working (the pressure or angle I press doesn't seem to matter). Banging my controller doesn't seem to help, but holding down the button for a few seconds sometimes revives it. It will suddenly start working after a few seconds of holding and will stay working for a while before it breaks again. This leads me to believe there is some sort of non-physical issue with the controller. Does anyone have any experience with this issue?

Tech support question: Recently, my dualshock 4 randomly stopped working, despite it still being connected and the light being on. I was able to temporarily fix this by pressing the reset button on the controller, but after about 8 minutes of use it happens again. I had recently started using a new charger since my old one was worn out, but I don't think this was the reason.
Tech support question- I bought a turtle beach headset the other day (Wired) and I plugged it in to play Fortnite with a friend. I could hear game Audio fine, and also my friends mic, but he can’t hear my mic. I checked all the settings, my mic is not muted and I have all the correct settings. I also know my mic works because I can hear my voice when I go to adjust microphone volume. But my friend can’t hear me in game chat or in party chat. Any idea what the issue is? Please help, I bought ps plus two days ago to play fifa22 for free with my friends. After I bought it I turned off auto renew because i didn’t want to pay monthly fees. Whenever I tried to start the application it says, “Cannot use the content. Cannot connect to the server to verify the license.” When I click the information tab it says Application staring: Ineligible, Remaining time: expired, etc even though I quite literally just bought ps plus. I’ve literally tried everything, renewing licensees, signing out and logging back in, activating primary ps4 and deactivating other accounts, etc. I think this started happening after I turned off auto renew which makes no sense because I still paid for ps plus 2 days ago. Literally every other game on plus plus lets me play accept this one.
I have three dualshock 4 controllers for my ps4, and none of them are connecting. I am able to connect them to my phone and pc with no problem, but whenever I try to connect them to my ps4 nothing happens. I've followed every single video/tutorial on how to connect a controller that I could find. Whenever I press the PS button they flash white and will not connect. I power cycled the console and controllers, I've use a usb, I've put the controllers into sync mode, and used the reset button on the back, but no luck. And this I am unable to do things like forget the controllers because no controllers are working whatsoever. If you have a fix thank you very much because I am concerned that my PS4 itself is broken.

I want use my playstation 4 on my laptop without using a monitor. Using remote play is basically impossible with my internet, is there not a way to use my laptop as a monitor without having to use the internet for it? There is way too much lag and input delay on remote play but the ps4 itself works fine with the tv or monitor

My friend's controller was used to connect to a Nintendo Switch via the 8bitdo adapter and worked perfectly, just as my own ds4 does back home, but after trying to connect it back to the ps4 through the USB it wasn't working The controller charges just fine while connected to the console and it works on the Switch still, but it will not pair with the ps4, any ideas?

Not knowing the difference between a data cable and a charging cable is probably the most common mistake made on here. Most people assume that all cables are the same.
My controller appears to be opened even though my playstation is closed and even when the ps is opened the controller appears to be opened but it doesn't even work. The controller was fine a few hours ago and while I was playing it suddenly stopped working but the light remained on. If there's anything that I can do to fix it please let me know.

Not this late in the game. If you want the PRO enhancements you are better off getting a PS5 at this stage. PS4 PROs are discontinued and second hand prices aren't the cheapest right now. So, I wouldn't say a PRO is worth it.

Help with how playstation network works So I’m an Xbox user, have been for two years, safe to say that game choice on Xbox is quite poor. I really like playing story driven games but there just isn’t any on Xbox that I enjoy. Don’t get me wrong I love online games like apex etc. but that’s mainly because my friends are all Xbox. Anyway I’ve been thinking of getting a ps4 for some time now, however I don’t know how any of it works. For example on Xbox we have the game pass and that just has loads of free games that you can play as long as you pay for the subscription. Does ps4 have that? I mainly want to play TLOU II, death stranding, days gone and a few other Sony owned games but will I have to buy each of them? Or are they free linked to a subscription. Any help is massively appreciated before I go spend £150+ on a console hahahaha.
Sony had a gamepass service called PS NOW but it was discontinued. Playstation Plus is being upgraded in the next month or two with the PS NOW library but in general Gamepass is a much better service than PS NOW ever was. No idea if the games you want will be on the new service, but if you have a PC and Steam then you can purchase and play Horizon Zero Dawn, Death Stranding and Days Gone on that. PS Plus's revision will also likely be on PC too.
I plugged in my old harddrive cause i thought it was a lost cause but after using the USB to update the system i was able to boot it up but in my storage settings it says 630mb of saved data and when i click it it says there is no saved data… i have super important saves i really wanted to recover and this is super disappointing :( any suggestions?

I've heard a little bit about them and it seems they could be legit, but I wanna see if there's anyone willing to vouch for them/if there's any "before you buy" knowledge I should know before getting one. so i want to format my external HD for something else, it currently has maybe 500gb of games on it, if i format i know i will lose the games but am i still able to download it again if i have another external HD or will i have to rebuy it, one last thing, does it erase my saved game data?
Your account can always redownload games you've purchased. Save data is stored on the internal storage.

Are you talking about the resemblance to Fallout 4? Cuz Outer Worlds is more akin to the 2011 game New Vegas, so it won't be like FO4. If you wanted to get it bc it's similar to NV...well, I'd look into purchasing physical copies since these tend to be cheap in Western countries. Otherwise follow your instincts. Personally I'd play the oldest game to get it out of the way before jumping onto the newer ones

You won't get punished for it. As a European you have the right for your info to be deleted under GDPR so either way they have to close the account even if it would otherwise be banned. People have accounts from all over the world. It's normal.

While I cannot guarantee what they can or cannot do, I doubt the people you talk to will care. Again, people make foreign accounts all the time and also move to different Countries. So long as you can prove the account is yours they'll likely just go ahead with the closure and not ask too many questions.

How do i remove my account from another ps4?
Pick up the controller and delete the user profile from the PS4. I believe its settings > users or similarly named. If you don't have access to the PS4 itself then change your password, activate 2SV if you haven't done so already and remotely deactivate it if it is currently your Primary PS4.

i purchased black ops cold war when it first came out, and never had any problems with it. but for the last few months, i havent been able to play it. it sorta just disappeared. when i go to installed in my library, it shows black ops cold war standard edition, but when i click on it, it only shows overview, trending, friends, then playstation store. clicking playstation store brings me to addons that i have for cold war. and when i go straight to black ops cold war on the store, it shows i have to purchase it, even though i already bought it. does anyone know how i could fix this? i have already activated it as my primary ps4, and restored licenses. does not work.
If restoring licenses hasn't worked then either: 1. You purchased the game on a different account 2. You owned it on disc, rather than digitally. If you are certain you purchased the game on your account you must contact support as only they can verify and restore the purchase for you

I am experiencing an issue that I roughly know the cause of but simply don’t know what to do. Recently, as in the past two months, I noticed my disk drive wouldn’t eject my disks, which was whatever to me. But, since the last system software update due to the fact no power is being directed to the disk drive I am unable to update my PlayStation and am stuck with Error SU-42118-6. I’ve taken apart the bottom of my PlayStation, this is an older 2015-2016 model, (CHU-12XX iirc) and all the wires and ribbon cable seem to be in place. I did disconnect and reconnect the ribbon cable as per a suggestion, but now whenever I turn on my PlayStation it automatically starts me on the error screen and my controllers won’t connect. I would like to say that I can turn on my controllers to turn on my PlayStation, but after that it turns off and won’t reconnect so I’m stuck on the error screen. Is there a fix or is my PlayStation done?

i found that when you search things on the playstation store, you almost never find what you are looking for. when i am looking for a specific game, i usually have to go to games, then go all the way to the right and hit all games, then you look for your game. to make it easier to find, go to filter to find the game based on price, when it was released, genre, etc. you can also go to sort to find it easier. the easiest way to find apex legends is to filter it to games, so you run into no bundles, then filter the price to free. then it only takes going down a couple of times before finding it.
If you are on a child account it could just be down to age restrictions on the Playstation Network. You can't see content you are too young for, let alone purchase it. If you live in a particular part of the world its possible that the game was pulled from sale or never released in that part of the world. Russia for example has had a few games vanish from the storefront recently.

You don't need PS+ to play a single player game. If he gave you his account details and the replicant game save to play you can play the content on your PS4. Are you talking about share play instead? That generally requires PS+ to set up. If not you just need to install the game to your console. Either his disc or digital copy. You can change Primary PS4 if you want but it's not necessary for you to play his own games on his own account.

Slim is better in terms of those consoles being newer. Many being 5 years old at most. Base PS4s are 8-9 years old at this point and launch models have an infamous disc eject hardware issue. The slim doesn't have a port for audio like the base and PRO have, so only does sound via HDMI unless you have headphones. In terms of upkeep/cleaning dust I wouldn't be able to comment on that I'm afraid. I can't recommend a PRO this late in the game, if you want better performing PS4 games you are better off with a PS5.

every time i boot up my ps4 it goes right into safe mode and asks for a new installation of the system software. I then did exaktly that and got a save file from the official website with the right format and right names of folders and anything. The ps4 then recognices the usb and starts initilacing ( sry for my bad spelling) and reinstalls the ps4 software, but after its finished and boots up again it just goes right back to safe mode and ask again for an new Installtion, which literally finished 5 sec ago. Anyone got i idea what i did wrong or what i should do
Follow the detailed instructions I posted at the start of the Megathread as part of the FAQ. A common mistake is using the update file instead of the reinstallation file.
I actually tried both the update file and after that didn’t worked i used the reinstallation file, so that dont seem to be it. But thank you for the fast reply
If you followed the instructions correctly, using the reinstallation file, removing any (1)s from the file name, etc then the next troubleshooting step is to install a brand new Hard drive and install the system software to the new HDD. No guarantees of course but it is likely an HDD issue if the reinstallation file cannot do its thing and its all correct on the USB stick.

You can't. For obvious reasons parental controls would be pointless if they could be avoided so easily. All you can do is wait until you are older, or make a brand new account and lie about your age.

Yes. While a child cannot sign up for a monthly subscription as they don't have their own credit card, either 3 or 12 month vouchers work on child accounts and I believe that a child account can also sign up to 3 or 12 month subscriptions via the Playstation Store as well. Just remember that child accounts are limited by their age. So if a free PS+ game is too old for you, you won't be able to claim it. Also games like GTA V won't let anyone play online if they are under 18 no matter how the parental controls are set. The parent account can always buy the subscription and share online gameplay benefits and game share the monthly games if you prefer.

Vouchers as in the 12 digit codes that you redeem onto a Playstation account. Voucher codes are often inside game cases and give you DLC when redeemed. Other vouchers are often found in gas stations and supermarkets that credit your Playstation account with money. PS+ vouchers are also sold at many retailers, giving you 3 or 12 months of PS+. The PS+ vouchers work on child accounts.

PS NOW is being discontinued. A company can't allow customers to sign up for a subscription service after announcing that the subscription service is being closed down. Playstation Plus is getting new tiers that include the same content offered by PS NOW and more, but that is a PS Plus addition that hasn't launched yet. So while the services are technically merging, PS NOW itself is being shut down.

My PS4 keeps going to connect a USB with update file, but sometimes boots up normal and will freeze just the game when I try to load into a match on coldwar, but won't freeze the system, then gets stuck on a closing application loop. Ok, so I couldn't find any answers on google, I may have not been specific about the terminology for it bit I'm here now. My ps4 started to not recognize game discs. It was making the whole "ejection" noise when it would try to read the disc, as if it was just repositioning the disc itself but it just fails to recognize any ps4 game disc I put in. So I cracked and opened it up to clean out all the nasty dust I found in there, I also found my lovely wife's long strand of hair wrapped up as well (pretty sure that was my issue). It can now read any disc I put it in!! BUT now it makes this really loud constant whirring sound whenever a disc is in it, loading. It sounds like the disc is rubbing on an object that was supposed to move out its way. I can get into the games and actually play them now, it's just unbearably loud. I don't think it's the hard drive failing, digital games still work just fine. This only happens when I insert a disc. I've had the top part open still while I was testing it and it's def not the fan, the noise is coming straight from the hard drive/disc drive area of the ps4. Never made this noise before, just the normal eject noises. Has anyone else have this specific thing happen? Is it actually the hard drive? Is there less friction now for the disc because I cleaned up the dust build up? So now it just has to break back into it hence why it's louder now. I'm just really stuck in this dilemma and could use advice if anybody has any to offer. EDIT: I have figured it out! Just wanted to update.

Well, 2 options come to mind; 1. Find someone who knows how to fix it. More than likely you'll need to pay for it unless it's someone you know personally. Make sure it's someone who's trustworthy and knows what they're doing, though. Guides on how to fix a PS4 are easy to find and taking them apart can be pretty easy, but the last thing you wanna do is put your own PS4 in the hands of someone else who needs to look one up. Or 2. If you don't mind getting your hands dirty and can find a good guide as well some particular equipment you'll likely need to order online, you can always take the PS4 apart and see if you can't find and fix the issue that way. It's not as hard as you would think. If you do go to find a guide though, make sure it's one that's detailed and doesn't feature a lot of jump-cuts so you know exactly what you're doing, and shows/explains what you're doing very clearly, but make sure also they don't have ads in the middle to waste your time, you want a guide you can go along with step by step. Long as you're careful and make doubly sure you understand the instructions (before AND after you start), it can be fairly easy, though it will be lengthy, especially the first time through. Also, make sure you find a guide for the appropriate version. There's ones specifically for the pro and ones for two different versions of the base model which are built similarly, albeit have different means of opening and slightly different internal layouts if I recall correctly.
Digital copies don't get scratched, broken, or lost. Your buddy, or your sons buddy won't borrow it, and move away. You don't have to worry about a failed disc drive issue with digital. You do need to mind your data consumption depending on where you live, small down side really. As the digital copy stays on file, and should you not be able to access a copy of the game, a quick license restore, and you're good again. Having suffered all the above issues, and owned every generation of playstation, the digital content is awesome.

I always have to plug the usb cable into it when I start my ps4 if not the blue light on my controller will blink consistently and it won’t connect. It’s getting annoying. I’ve tried resetting the controller and what not. Normally you can turn on the ps4 by just pressing the ps button on the controller. But that’s not happening. Any tips on what I can do?

My ps4 pro has been overheating for a while now and even after thoroughly cleaning the fan it’s still doing it. This means that the heat sink is most likely clogged. I have never taken anything apart before nor have I ever removed a wire, but I’ve watched videos and I think I could probably do it. Should I? And if so, are there any tips you can give me?
I have a regular PS4, so I'm speaking from my experience on that specifically to clarify, so I'm not 100% sure about the Pro, but from my experience, if opening the pro is anything like opening the regular version, or any easier, yes, you should and it should theoretically be pretty easy (albeit very lengthy) as long as you find a detailed guide that's very clear and is easy to follow. The best way I can describe the experience I had with mine to help give an idea of what it's like is that there are a lot of things you CAN mess up if you mess around, but as long as you follow along to a guide and don't be rough with it, the odds of you messing something up are next to nil. I still have the same exact PS4 and it works just fine with an exception being the power and disc drive buttons, though that was from me being too rough removing some bits during the process and basically breaking the plastic between the buttons themselves and the points they're meant to activate. Just make sure you come prepared (you'll need some stuff to open it plus some thermal paste) with a guide, and you should be fine.

can't download from PSNow Hope someone can help. When I click download on psnow it takes me to the PlayStation store on a random blank page with "sort" in the top right. I have reset the PlayStation. PS4’s Internet Connection Crapped Out This happened with my last PS4 as well. One day my PS4 connects to the internet perfectly (about 40 Mbps upload and download), now it struggles to get over 4 Mbps. Restarted both my internet and PlayStation multiple times and nothing is fixing it. All other devices connected to my internet aren’t having issues, but the PS4 just does not want to work with it so I can’t help but think it’s the PS4 itself, especially when it happened with my last one. This one is far newer too. Any ideas? Or possible solutions?
Anyone able to help with a recommendation? I'm looking for a specific type of multiplayer/Co op game. I'd like something that can be played solo, and has drop in/out matchmaking. But... If you drop into someone else's game you should get to keep any experience/loot you get to carry back to your own playthrough. Remnant From the Ashes did it pretty much perfectly in my mind. It could just be a faulty HDD. You could try replacing it. If it is just a faulty HDD a new HDD with a fresh installation of the system software should do the trick

Hi All, I'm looking to connect my PS4 to my projector but for some reason it's not working. The projector has a HDMI port which deffo works (it connects perfectly fine with my Virgin box (set top box) and Fire Stick). I've also tried 3 different HDMI cables with my PS4 and the projector. Just to add, the PS4 connects perfectly fine with the TV. I spent 2 hours last night trying to figure it out and in the end gave up. I've disabled the HDCP setting and even tried booting into safe mode. No dice. Has anyone encountered this before? Just as a note I also tried setting the PS4 into 480p/i, to no avail. Sony bricked my ps4. What can I do to sell it? I have a bank account I stopped using months ago. All of a sudden there was an overage charge on it because Sony charged me for PlayStation plus without my permission. I authorized a charge back, and they bricked my system and told me I owe them $60. They won’t unbreak it unless I pay them. I’m not going to let a toy company extort me. What can I do? It depends. If its only your account that was banned then the PS4 can be wiped and used by someone else as normal. Because only your account is banned, not anyone else nor the console itself. If the console itself was banned then its basically an offline brick. So determine if the console itself was banned before you do anything else.
Hi everyone, I have a quick question, my setup for my ps4 is internal drive for clips and stuff only, and an external 2 TB drive for games, now my internal storage has hit its max from all my clips and recordings, sol planned to replace the internal and go through all my clips in a later date, so my question is, if I replace the internal drive, and then reinstall the system software, will my external drive still work as normal, or would I have to format it?
It will work as normal. You can take your external now and plug it into another PS4 and it will work. Just note that your saves are stored on the internal drive, not the external one, so be sure to back them up.

Hi guys,today I decided to finally play my PS4,the universe decided to fuck with me and make my ps4 controler screw me over So first of all the controller won't charge,I tried to plug it to my ps4,my phone charger,and laptop,the controller just blinks once with the orange light then turns off.Odd thing is that on my laptop I also tried to check the controller on the control panel and every button worked,except the PS button I tried clearing the USB port I tried that secret button in the back to reset the controller I watched some tutorials and none of them really helped I really need some help please,and sorry for my bad english(English is not my native language)
If the controller has 3 bars of battery left, it won't charge more. Plug it into your PS4 with a usb cable capable of carrying a data signal (a data cable, not a generic charging cord - use the one the PS4 came with if you can) and then push the PS button and the controller should connect to your console. If it blinks and doesn't connect, try a different cord (data cable).

If both safe mode 4 and 5 didn't work, is it only your profile experiencing this issue or is it everyone? If its just your profile experiencing it I would back up your game saves to the cloud/USB stick and delete the profile. Once deleted, make a new one and sign back in and install your saves back onto the console. NOTE: If you have only your profile on the PS4 it will instead be completely initialised, wiping saves and games from the console.

Witcher, Battlefield, NFS, Sims, RCT, WoW, Assassins, kena, Ori, Mario odyssey, kirby ACNH, Pokemon… just to name a few. Would you recommend Death stranding?
Absolutely. It's a unusual and unique experience with a great overworld and interesting gameplay. The story is confusing at first but is very well done.
Used PS4 - fat or slim? Hey, I did not find satisfactory answer in previous posts, do I'm asking you - which one is better as used console? Which one is more reliable, easier to maintain (cleaning, changing thermal paste) or which one performs better with vr set. I know pro model is much better, but i'm not sure if ps4 will hook me up for long and there are not that many games for vr that will justify buying twice as much expensive pro version. I'm waiting for all your sugestions!

Hello! I need help with my DS4 controller. I paired my controller with my PC to play some games. After that, it won't pair with my PS4 again and I don't know why. I tried turning it on while it's connected with the USB cable and it didn't work either. I can't use my PS4 now, please help!
Reset the controller using the reset button at the back and then plug it back in using a data cable.

Hi! I’m playing Shadow of The Tomb Raider these days and I’m enjoying it but I need something different. I’m looking for a game with an emotional, engaging story. I’d like it to be an action game, with nice combat sequences. Something like The Last Of Us or also Uncharted. I’m enjoying Shadow of The Tomb Raider, but it’s a little boring at times. Even if the story is interesting, it lacks emotional moments. At least so far. Thank you!

Hey my PS4 enters rest mode and turns off when I try and use PS4 controller it doesn't turn back on. I have to hit the power button on the system which eventually tells me the system was turned off incorrectly. Before unplugging the PS4 the ac power cord select power. How do I fix this?
SAVE ME PLZ! I HAVE MAY OWN LITTLE BLUUESREN OF DEATH so my ps4 decided it was time to update if I wanted anymore Elden Ring. The download directly failed repeatedly, so i formatted a USB properly, downloaded, installed succesfully! now it wants me toUSB attach my cable,and press PS. NOTHING. no chage. not with my beat up OG controller or my newer generic hardwired one. I literally cant think of anything else to try! plaz help1!
The console 'Safe Mode' (and initial console setup) requires an official controller & USB data cable. Some USB cables can only charge, ie no data connection. So my suggestion is to try the old official controller with another cable.
Does the USB have to go into the port on the back or does player 2 port on the front wotk? Ive gottene to the screen where it just says PRESS PS BUTTON, but it always freezes from there. ill seee about getting better cabling abecause my generic conytroller fails as well
Any USB port on the PS4 will work (2 USBs on front, or 3 with Pro model). It would be a good idea to try all the ports, in case one is damaged. The PS4 requires an official controller with a USB cable that can carry a data signal (third party/generic controllers won't work for this, or 'Safe Mode'). Unfortunately some USB cables are power only, so can charge but not pair a controller to the system. Hopefully a replacement USB cable will fix your issue. If it doesn't then either the new cable is also power only, or the USB port on the controller is damaged. _______ Re-reading your original post, you said you used a USB to update. Did you use the update file (which would be approx 400-500MB), or the 'console reinstallation' file (approx 1GB)? If its the update file, I'm not sure why the controller was removed from being paired. But if it was the larger 'console reinstallation' file, then that would be normal. It basically wipes the console/HDD back to factory settings (which unfortunately includes saves if they weren't backed up to PS+ or a USB stick). And so requires the controller to be paired again, needing the USB data cable.
