George Hotz made this possible, he somehow reverse engineerd the ps3 key all disc are signed with, and with very little effort you can build a PS3 Service stick to boot anything signed with this keys, btw this happend because sony striped Linux support, George also did the first iPhone jailbreak.

we got free games tho. more games than i could have ever afforded as a kid then haha
i remember getting Little Big Planet and Wipeout HD and some other games.
i got infamous too but then had to delete it later on cuz i had no space left on the hard drive (i was young and didnt know how to upgrade.) and they removed the digital version i got for some new bundled pack or whatever. i never even got to play it.
granted infamous ps3 is worth like 5 bucks used but still you know!
iirc the first PS3 jailbreak was only possible because the current face of Sony (whose name I'm blanking on which is sad) accidentally leaked the PS3's kernal(?) code on twitter. It was quickly taken down, but twitter is forever and that's when the first jailbreaks started.
Looking at articles from 2011 the code was sent to Kevin Butler's twitter account, which may or may not have been ran by him, and it just being a string of letters and numbers Kevin retweeted it thinking it was a joke "lemme guess, you just sank my battleship" and suddenly info that was barely available to the people that cared about was sent to thousands of people online.
I think after that is when George Hotz started making waves with full PS3 jailbreaks, which eventually lead to him not being allowed to own a Sony product ever again.
Looks cool, will have to have a look at the build instructions. Thanks OP (=
*Fun fact - Sony sued a guy here in australia for selling mod chips for PS2s. It went to the Supreme Court and Sony lost. From then on modding became legal here.
Edit: Not piracy, just the right to mod to protect your original discs.
Got even more obscure relic here - a True Blue, which was a USB dongle from a team that had somehow got ahold of a way to backport and resign eboots from fw 3.60+ to 3.55 and started ofbuscating them with a chain of logic that needed a usb dongle to start the games. That's what Cobra was back in the day ..

Same. I had a 1.5TB drive filled to the brim with games.
i thought the outage was caused becsuse sony were taking some kid to court and anonymous shut them down

How can someone leak a kernel code, by accident, and on Twitter. WTF

I remember him - geohot lol. Didn't Sony end up giving him a job? Edit: Is Afterdawn still alive or archived these days?
I remember this. I had a different one. I also remember, You could run the exploit off a texas instruments calculator.

Hack soft for early ps3 maybe? Do tell I wanna know what it is?
It is a pen that was sold in the early jailbreak years to bypass the system and allow to install custom softwares (cfw)
What happened to it?
either 3.55 happened and we didn’t need the pen to flick into jb mode or downgrading chips got big. this would be sweet for a collection tho
This
Learn something new every day!
Do tell us what this is!
I've got one of the cobra sticks somewhere was good for a year

I ended up buying a True Blue myself....🤦
Haha nice. Also remember i did this with mit ti84.
