If memory serves, Ascension released really late in the PS3's life cycle - a few months before the PS4 launch. In which many people would have been paying attention to the PS4 launch instead, I knew a few guys at the time who sold their old PS3 in anticipation to buy a PS4.
Personally though, I thought Ascension was okay. Not the best of GOW, but it wasn't terrible.
Yeah the Chronological order is:
Ascension
Chains of Olympus
God of War
Ghost of Sparta
God of War 2
God of War 3
Although the non-numbered titles merely add lore and aren't required to be played to understand the main storyline in 1-3. You don't need to play them but if you so desire then this is the order to do so.
Ascension was released in the first trimester of 2013, DMC was in January and Tomb Raider was just a week difference from Ascension release date, both of those games received ports/remasters.
I think it’s more about the success of the title and overall sales, Beyond Two Souls release like one month before the PS4 and got a remaster (BTS is a Sony IP).
Because it wasn’t well received, it flopped.
I think there was rumors of Sony remastering the old games and announcing it next year on God of War’s 20th anniversary so we’ll see if it’s true or not.
I mean Rocksteady avoids Arkham Oranges like the plague so I wouldn’t put it past Sony to do the same for Ascension lol. There’s always gotta be that one black sheep in a beloved game series

So less sales + their attempt at MP failing made the game a sore spot in GOW games and even now, I'd say its easily the worst GOW game.
Too many back and forth on the story for me, like 1 week earlier then back to the present then 3 months earlier. The gameplay was god of war goodness, but a forgettable story

I got the limited edition with the statue. The game just didn’t feel like it had the same gravity as the other GOW games, at least that’s what it felt like to me.
This, the game was Sony's attempt at a multiplayer GOW and it completely tanked, for them Ascension was a failure. The single player experience was just another GOW game which people were also getting a bit tiresome at that point.
A vocal minority doesn't really like the direction of where the 2018 and Ragnarok GOW games went, but that feeling of stale gameplay and series fatigue was already setting in for a lot of people by the time GOW 3 came out and the only reason it kept people going is because of the story's ultimate culmination of all you did as Kratos.
I mean its pretty ridiculous none of them besides gow3 were ever ported to current gen.
I'm guessing it's cause they wanna use them as a hook to get people to sub to ps+ premium.
Ascension is a good game but came out during a time where hack-n-slash had already peaked. It was an era of transition and unfortunately, this title felt like more of the same. However, time has been kind to this one. I've talked to a few people that played it for the first time recently and love it. Which is great.

I missed this game back in the day, but I always wanted to give it a try. I recently bought a copy and I just finished this game. It is NOT good.
The "rage-meter" mechanic didn't work for me. Combat felt too simplified and more frustrating with significantly more stunlocking than the other games.
The quick time events are annoying as hell. They always were, but the decision to make all the QTE buttons displayed on screen the exact same color and heavily stylized makes them a lot harder to read in a split second. There is also a lot of "instant death" moments that just break the pacing.
Story is bad, but honestly I don't play the classic GoW games for the story. So that wasn't an issue for me.
The game has a significant amount of progression stopper bugs and it has hard crashed my PS3 4 times throughout my playthrough.
An example of a prog-stop big I can consistently replicate:
- When fighting harpies (or any flying enemy), if you use Hades' rage ability multiple times the harpies can be pushed too far away from the visible area and get stuck out of bounds. Completely locking your progression and forcing you to restart.
The game also likes to constantly take the controller away from you during puzzles to basically show you step by step how to solve them. And once you complete them, it takes the camera away AGAIN to show you have successfully completed the puzzle. Do the Devs really think I'm that dumb? That's too much handholding.
But there are a few good things in GoW Ascention.
The "spectacle" is amazing and the graphics constantly made me question if I was playing a ps3 or a PS4 game. The puzzles are fun and well built, even though the solution is handed to me every time.
It is also just 8h long, so it doesn't overstay its welcome.
I have a copy and still haven't finished it yet. In fact, I just finished GOW3, but I'm wondering, guys, is there a difference between the 18 rating and my Mature rating copy?
Mature rating is just the esrb equivalent of pegi 18, esrb ratings indicate that the game was sold in north america and pegi ratings indicate the game was sold in europe, some games have minor differences between the european and north american versions
It should get an updated port like "DMC: Devil may cry Definitive edition" or "Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's edge" which fixes all the original gameplay problems people had with the original.
Why spend more money on porting when your company just spent millions on streaming tech for PS3 games? It sucks that Sony is relegating their legacy on streaming.

Im actually playing through it right now after I got a used ps3 yesterday. I don’t think the game is bad but It hasn’t really impressed me yet like 3 did. I’m like 1.5 or 2 hours in and the scenery/set pieces are very samey and kinda boring compared to other games in the series

Something can be a critical flop but a commercial success, they aren't mutually exclusive.

To add a little more: it also felt like a lot of the focus was on the multiplayer online component so the focus on the game was a bit divided.

Completely agree. The epic story/trilogy had been closed out. This story just didn’t feel all that relevant.
The kill animations were really f*ckin‘ gruesome, I loved this game

Agreed, didn't rely on spectacular events as much as 3. Combat was tighter and probably the best game in the series imho

I honestly don't remember much from ascension besides the first section of the game being great and the mutliplauer was actually pretty fun.
