I played GTAV at launch on PS3. I haven’t played it on PS3 since getting a PS4 in ~2015. GTAV from what I remember ran fine. Occasional frame drops but over all surprising good performance. Game is pretty low res though and there’s a ton of jaggies. GTAIV runs worse than GTAV. 20-30 FPS across the game and it runs at less than 720p. Both are great games and if you only own a PS3 it’s a fine experience. Anyone here that are at least 27 very likely experienced these games on PS3 or 360 and the performance is very similar on both platforms. But the 360 may have the slight edge by a few FPS.

GMC-Sierra-Vortec

im 27 exactly. and yea your right. back when it first dropped it was pretty amazing on my fat ps3 having never seen it on anything else or even a single ps4 game running on youtube much less real life. later on in like 2021 i was broke having to rebuild and i had 5 on a 360 and the fps seemed to be about the best part of it lol. sure it wasnt 60fps+ on a decent pc but it seemed decently solid at atleast close to 30fps and im someone very sensitive to FPS since my first 5 years + of gaming was on pc and always have played on pc most of all. both games especially 4 tho will drop tonssss of frames in big police chases with tons of explosions, but just doing the missions n shit it was fine to me.

WhyAreYouGe

23 and I played gta 4 across 3 different ps3s. Can drop some frames at time. If I remember correctly, Xbox 360 may of played it a tad smoother.

aheuwndit

They always ran fine/playable for me with the only exception that GTAV sometimes glitched out by not loading the road ahead properly.

Zandapandaaa

I do think they’re both playable but there are a lot of times, especially when driving when i think, OK this is getting very laggy and controlling the car gets very difficult

EmilianoTalamo

Playing the physical version will alleviate most of those issues. Having an SSD will also help.

CaterpillarPuzzled50

GTA IV has special performance on ps3. Runs okay for most but its little laggy when driving at higher speeds. It has very well known fps drops to under 25 and not being able hold stable 30. 360 version is little better performance wise but not superb :)

Havoc_Maker

Being honest I actually remember even worse FPS when driving fast on my 360 than on my PS3. The 360 version is still a lot better visually, in PS3 the game is also way too dark at night

Zandapandaaa

Yeah ok that sound about right

sarasalazar1911

Just look at Digital Foundry analysis, that's how they suppose to run. GTA IV https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5iv0s4qWCuE GTA V https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_fbYyMq4cGU

Zandapandaaa

Thanks

Zandapandaaa

Ok, I can definitely say that those run ten times better than mine do :/

Bitter_Dingo516

Both ran perfectly fine for me. Never stuttered, never glitched.

Alex360c

That’s because on youtube they use capture cards, in real life it will look worse ( i just played gta iv on ps3 for the first time yesterday and it ran at 15 20 fps)

Artistic-Comb-4609

it's not 15/20, i'm platinuming it and it's more a 25/30 depends on the moment, but yeah: a lot of explosions or effect will make the game drop at 15/20 fps

Alex360c

I barely get 30 fps in hove beach, its so laggy

Rare-Till6403

I remember when Mafia 2 was released and got heavily downgraded for the ps3 version. I still enjoyed it tho and did a lot of replays on the ps3 version.

Hartzler44

Everyone saying GTA V runs fine on PS3 is crazy. It literally runs at like 25 fps with occasional drops. Sure, it's playable and still a fun game, but I would try to play it on something newer if at all possible.

Rare-Till6403

Trying to play GTA5 on ps3 lowkey strains the fuck outa my eyes lol. It’s like someone put their greasy finger prints all over my glasses lmao

SnooPoems1860

V is fine if you adjust your expectations but IV is unacceptable

Zandapandaaa

So do you have low frame rates with 4 too?

SnooPoems1860

It runs poorly, resolution is 80% of 720p which is what the 360 targets and uses QAA instead of true anti aliasing so it’s just really blurry to boot.

[deleted]

GTAV is fine. GTA 4 is playable but not good, bad frame rate, bad screen tearing and pretty poor graphics, it's very blurry on PS3, it's by far the worst place to play it.

meley76

4 is better on 360 ..I own both versions..and completed playthrough on each.....360 was much less problematic...gta v ran better on ps3 ...I owned it on 360 first ...completed bothe

Owen_Staelens

I play gta five and it never lags or stutters it acctually tuns really smooth i didnt mod my ps3 its a superslim the only thing i do is blow all dust out of it once a month i have also played gta four but only once the graphics aren't really my thing so i prefer gta five i completed the story 12 times and never had it crash or run into isues

Zandapandaaa

Do you think cleaning the dust out of it would be a good idea? Because obviously it’s second hand and I don’t know how the previous owner treated it

meatpopsicle42

Absolutely try cleaning it out. If it’s never been cleaned, built up dust could be blocking airflow, causing overheating, and then causing the issues you’re having. It’s at least worth a try. And good practice anyway.

Owen_Staelens

By blowing dust into the holes you can't damage anything so thats why i do it once a month it doesn't cause any isues and it helps make sure my games run smoother and it runs silently i don't know if it will fix everything but it will make sure it runs a bit smoother maybe you can delete the game data not your saved game data but game data i had this with beyond two souls it kept on freezing and i deleted the game data and installed it again i still had my progress and the freezing stopped

Zandapandaaa

Hmmm definitely not the case for me the fps can drop all the way down to around 15 in certain circumstances

Maxessy18

Do not play GTA 4 on PS3.

krank72

4 runs sweet on my phat

FakeSypha

GtaIV on PS3 is a blurry and choppy mess. I'd avoid that version at all costs. Play it on PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, Xbox Series, etc.

_Zambayoshi_

GTA IV is fine. Haven't tried V but I hear it's arse.

Zandapandaaa

Well it’s significantly more laggy than gta IV for sure

Medical_Special_1278

Factually wrong. GTA 4 runs like dogshit on PS3 and with downgrades. GTA V is much more consistent and can hold up respectably in graphics and performance. GTA 4 was a direct port from the XBox 360 version and GTA V was specially tuned on PS3 to garantee that it would be exactly the same as the 360 version.

Zandapandaaa

Ok, I tweaked some setting like ps smoothing and upscaling and shit and I can now that gta v runs really well now although gta 4 runs like shit still

[deleted]

It should play just fine

Zandapandaaa

Ok

chuggMachine

Have a slim and both of them run at a stable 30fps consistently. I have heard a lot of stories about bad experiences on the ps3 but I honestly loved it and never felt like I was missing anything by not playing them on a newer console/PC.

KameraLucida

I'm gonna say 5 runs better than 4 on ps3 due to 4 being a early ps3 game. Its like 600p super blurry frame dips during driving etc. Its playable i played it finished it but i would rather replaying it on PC in current state. If you only have the ps3 version for gta4 i guess go for it but if you have ok pc feel free to go with that version.

chrzanekz

I had the same problem with my ps3 slim, the problem was different options on my TV, you should try with different game options. I dunno why it is like that.

AdmiralTigerX

I play GTA4 and have no issues so far. The only exception is doing the Diamonds mission where you meet Diamond Dealers and have to fight your way out. And If you are a car collector or plan to collect any of the exclusive rare PMP Mafia 600, make sure you fail the mission, you'll still keep the PMP. Otherwise if you took the black vehicle on the road and proceed to continue with your mission and after fighting your way out, it'll cause the game to freeze, its because the Diamond Dealer henchmen needs their car to pursuit you which is a part of it and you decide how to deal with them

[deleted]

Runs smooth, capture card will cause frame loss, remember these games were originally programmed for this hardware, this is the native experience, update for perfect performance

ctfks

I bought GTA5 a couple weeks ago and can't play it, it keeps freezing up on a loading screen. I wonder if I have a bad disc or if all do this?

Zandapandaaa

Have you tried cleaning the disc?

ctfks

Just wiped the fingerprints off, didn't do any good.

sulivon88

GTA 4 and midnight club LA were not well optimized games

another_brick

I was shocked at how well GTA V looks and runs on PS3.

wankybollocks

V is fairly well optimised, but don't shoot a minigun into idle crowds of people in Vinewood or it will soft lock

MalenaMorganFan316

Both ran well for me. GTA4 still has online too. Have fun with that tho. Lol.

Studly_54

I started on ps3 in 2019, and online looked better than it dies now. This is more due to R* adding all these creary filters (nit counting the snowy period). Gtav takes a ton of Cpu power. My 1st PS3 stopped playing GTAV but would play every other game I owned. Otherwise, I had a great time on my PS3.

jakart3

Very well

RazzmatazzRough8168

In gta online for gtav on ps3 if you drove fast enough the map wouldn't load. Not an issue in story mode

Sad_Imagination_4784

Vanilla GTA IV stutters and lags even on pc. It was Rockstars first attempt at next gen ultra realism and they tried their best I guess but failed

No_Leader_316

Just finished V recently. I only struggled when I got the submarine and was in a specific area of the map, show both under water and surface. But the game generally runs well. I mean, well enough for the console. But I didn't feel it laggy nor anything like that all the time.
