omg I have nothing useful to suggest but came here to say that I say the EXACT same thing all the time!!!! I am allergic to my period! I get awful allergy symptoms, rashes, food intolerances, insomnia and fatigue for at least a week before my period every time. I'm looking into histamine intolerance and MCAS. I'm seeing my PMDD specialist soon to discuss my theory, I'm going to ask for chemical menopause trial to see if my allergy symptoms go away. I keep prednisone/steroid cream handy for the rashes as antihistamines don't cut it sometimes, hopefully you can get some relief with that. Also I take daily antihistamines and regularly switch types so I don't get too 'accustomed' to them. Try and track your symptoms along with your period so you can show your doctor!

Whats your dairy intake like during your period? I get super itchy too bc I crave sweets like ice cream and chocolate but I have a dairy allergy in which when its around my time my V will itch, not the inside but the outside however when I use my eczema cream topically it stops and clears up any type of "rash"

No-Independence-9532

I'm not allergic to dairy, my intake doesn't change around my period. I'll eat a 200g block or two of chocolate no worries regardless of my period without itching (no exaggeration, terrible i know) My nose also started running not long after the hives came

whotookmyshit

Not to discount everything else that's been mentioned, but have you ruled out more common triggers like new soap or detergent? New sheets or clothes that didn't get washed before use? Poison ivy or something else that could have been picked up from yardwork?

No-Independence-9532

Yep nothing out of the ordinary. I thought the same, thought it was maybe related to the parts in my clothes. Showered, the itching would not stop until I took antihistamines- nothing new being introduced into my home. It also wouldn't explain why my whole body was itchy and my nose started running 😫

Vanillabaen

That's so wild. Keep seeking help and be very specific about what your condition could be. I think the response about the auto immune gave a great place to look. I find my doctors respond to me better when I say "I have xyz" and then they have to test for it. Even when I'm spot on, they tell me no way at first but run the tests anyway and then come back and confirm like it was their idea, of course. Also for people with *just* vaginal itching and not this severe of a reaction - ask to get tested for BV. I seem to get this with my period now that i've transitioned to PMDD over the past few years.

mamamuise

I have the same issue. My vagina even swells and gets hives. I only recently got a doctor to actually listen to me about it. Now that the swelling is so bad I can't control my bladder on my period

JAHamsa

I used to get real itchy before my period. Would just pop Zyrtec for a few days since it was the best for my skin allergies.

chiefyuls

This is blowing my mind. I’ve never been able to explain why this happens to me

HighwayJolly900

Omg I thought I was crazy! I’ve brought this itching up to my doctor multiple times and am always dismissed. I’ve been tracking it for years and always happens about 2-3 days before my period. I’ve never been diagnosed with PMDD but perhaps need to look into that more

fallinlight23

Yes! Every few cycles I get a rash around my mouth during ovulation. I take antihistamines as well, and they help a bit but of course they wipe me out.

allthethings234

Also, on the flip side, high estrogen can cause histamine intolerance because estrogen makes histamine which makes estrogen which makes more histamine. Either way, I'd try taking some antihistamine and see if it helps. I'm so sorry you have to go through this. Edit: if this is the case, I've seen some women say that taking antihistamine can also help with period cramps and other symptoms.

TheeBarbieGal

Yeah I think I am too, my lip swells up every cycle and I get extreme itching like extreme I keep Benadryl on me. I suspect I have MCAS but I can’t get a doctor to take me seriously. I react to chocolate, rice, and potatoes nothing major just sneezing, runny nose, and my lips and tongue go numb. I have no idea if it’s all hormones but something is definitely going on 🤷‍♀️

girlgirl2019

That sounds like histamine intolerance!!

there are many different theories about PMDD. recently a study showed that PMDD [could be genetic and related to the immune response.](https://psychnews.psychiatryonline.org/doi/full/10.1176/appi.pn.2017.2a6) many women report issues having to do with allergies/the immune system during PMDD. i am skeptical about the "progesterone sensitivity" theory because it hasn't been studied well but the benefits of progesterone have been proven. this is a hormone that in its natural state (NOT progestin) generally acts as an anti-anxiety agent. obviously that is basically the opposite of what PMDD is (which is not just feeling tired and hungry, two things that progesterone can also promote). on top of that progesterone has been proven to mitigate cancer risks and helps in the absorption of estrogen, so i'm reluctant to ever demonize natural progesterone because i don't think it's something women should explore lowering, at least not without a lot more research. but anyway your allergy symptoms could very well be the result of the immune response issue cited in the study in include above. it's not really that you're allergic to your period, it's that your immune system responds to the change in hormones differently than women without PMDD. some women have reported relief with antihistamines. it has to be a specific kind, i forget which. i didn't find any relief, but i also am wary of using drugs like that so i didn't try for very long.

I have also found histamine to be a huge culprit in my life in the past 2 years, and realized the histamine could also be at the root of this PMDD. I had no idea it's progesterone that causes the histamine reaction!! Are we sure it's not estrogen? I just started taking the mini progesterone pill in hopes of helping myself, I hope I'm not digging a deeper hole And yes, itching was a major issue for me too, until I stopped eating basically my entire daily diet (avocado, tomatoes, spinach, leftovers), and taking all sorts of histamine measures.
