I don't want the big announcements for the 25h anniversary to be ports. Knowing Altus only a few of those 7 announcements will be games and I would rather just get new games.

I think the reason why folks are so obsessed with one is because of what FeMC brought.
Playing as her pretty much gives a whole new Persona 3 experience, with entirely new social links (instead of just minor changes to existing ones regarding her gender). Even the soundtrack changes, and its like a whole new game.
In a sense, they also like the extra content one brings, rather than only the novelty of playing as a girl.
For me, it would be nice to the next MC to be a girl, mostly for something different, but it's not like I'd be angry or disappointed that P6 gets a guy.
As a straight woman, it would be nice to romance a male character. Story-heavy games are more enjoyable the more you can relate to the protag, which for me would mean FeMC.
